They were artists, myth makers, story tellers, tribe leaders, psychedelic troubadours; they pioneered "world music” with albums like The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter; they experimented with theater, drugs, film and lifestyle and inspired The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Pet Shop's Neil Tennant, The Lilac Time and many, many others.   They lived the hippie dream of communes and free love, dressed like mediaeval princes and princesses, were the very essence of the Scottish counterculture, played Woodstock, became cult stars, were acid evengeleists; gathered a following, a tribe that stayed loyal to them long after they had gone.. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, I'm excited to bring you my conversation with Stephen Duffy! Stephen was one of the founding members of a little band called Duran Duran – maybe you've heard of them? He left to do is own thing with Simon LeBon taking his place and the rest is history for both Duran Duran and Stephen Duffy. Duffy had many twists and turns in his career and has a list of bands and accomplishments to go with it. He had a huge hit under the name Stephen Tin Tin Duffy with “Kiss Me With Your Mouth." But it's his band the Lilac Time that emerged in 1987 with their self-titled debut that has endured and blossomed. The Lilac Time are currently back with a fantastic new album, Dance Till All The Stars Come Down, that's available everywhere you get your music.   Musical credits: Theme song from Jupe Jupe. His work on either side of the sound booth has won an armful of Dallas Observer music awards and proven that some musicians actually do get better with age.Our conversation today will focus on British singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy and his second solo offering from 1995 titled “Duffy” which was originally released on Indolent Records. Our guest today is a native of Winston-Salem, NC. He is one Mitch Easter, legendary front man of the acclaimed Let's Active and record producer at the Drive-In and Fidelitorium Recordings. For our listeners who might be unfamiliar with Mitch's musical career to date … Easter formed Let's Active in 1981 and that same year, produced R.E.M.'s debut single "Radio Free Europe," which was issued on Johnny Hibbert's label Hibtone Records in Atlanta. Incidentally, Radio Free Europe is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2021 and a reissue of an exact replica of Hibbert's 7” mix is now available as of July 23rd, shortly before the time of this interview.Easter went on to produce for R.E.M. their Chronic Town EP in 1982, their first full-length Murmur in 1983, and shortly afterwards, Reckoning. Murmur's success also drew more attention to Easter, as did the release of Let's Active's debut EP Afoot, which launched the cult hit "Every Word Means No." Mitch has produced the likes of Pavement, Wilco, Suzanne Vega, Dinosaur, Jr., The Baseball Project, Chris Stamey, The dBs, Alejandro Escovedo, A Fragile Tomorrow – the list goes on and on. He is also part of an ensemble that over the past few years has paid homage to Big Star's Third record. And I would be remiss if I did not mention that he was also inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2019.Our conversation today will center on British singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy and his second solo offering from 1995 titled “Duffy” where Mitch both produced and contributed electric guitar. Stephen Duffy straddles different genres in a way that few have ever done. He grew up in Birmingham; our conversation is littered with local references covering legendary studios, musos, and people. While still in Birmingham, he scored his first huge success as Tin Tin. In due course he went solo as Stephen Duffy, and later with his group the Lilac Time.  During that time, he has worked with some of the absolute biggest names in the business. Stephen has a pop past he can't erase – and he doesn't really want to, despite the elegant folk stylings he embraces with The Lilac Time. And he is still cooking up some major new projects. The first half of this chat is a who's who of Birmingham Rock and Pop in the 80s, anyone who knocked around the Birmingham scene then will find much to enjoy. After that, there is a torrent of huge names. And massive, massive success arrived when Stephen was in his 40s... which also seemed to escape us all.   If you want to follow up on some of the topics that crop up in this chat, there is a companion Radio To Go blog post on the Radio To Go Blog at radiotogo.com: A Life In Music: Stephen Duffy But that's just the icing on the cake. A footnote: the intro and outro flourishes I'm using in this series of Lives in Music podcast come from Vo Fletcher who is featured in this series, along with Loz Kingsley, here. I asked him for a bit of live impro, and this was the result.   The Lives in Music Podcast series has been running for about two years now. Various musicians have started out in the underground and left it behind for commercial mainstream success. Few have deliberately taken the opposite route back into the counterculture - and rarely as repeatedly as our guest Stephen Duffy.   Stephen formed, and left, Duran Duran, had chart success in both the 80s and the 90s as a solo artist and then again in the 00s as songwriter / producer for Robbie Williams - with whom he toured the enormodromes of the world. But each time, he turned around and returned to the folk underground roots of his early inspirations with his band The Lilac Time.   We take a gentle personal trip through the counterculture soundtracked by some of those inspirations. And we hear how the folk underground  - and The Lilac Time - have quietly kept going whilst musical genres have come and gone. And we wonder if the counterculture is still alive and twitching, or if it was killed in the 80s .. by Gary Numan..   For more on Stephen and The Lilac Time including their recent and upcoming releases   www.stephenduffy.com   For more on the Bureau of Lost Culture www.bureauoflostculture.com

The Lilac Time special with Stephen Duffy in conversation The Lilac Time is a British alternative folk-rock band that was originally formed in Herefordshire, England by Stephen Duffy, his brother Nick Duffy and their friend Michael Weston in 1986. The band's name was taken from a line in the Nick Drake song "River Man". Since its formation, The Lilac Time has gone through various line-up changes, with the Duffy brothers as mainstays. The band's activity has intertwined with Stephen Duffy's solo and songwriting career. The Duffy brothers and Michael Weston had recorded music that would become the band's self-titled debut, which was first released on Swordfish Records in 1987. Michael Giri and Fraser Kent joined when the band went on tour. The group signed to Fontana, which reissued the band's first album in remixed form in 1988. The group went on to release the albums Paradise Circus in 1989, and & Love For All in 1990, the latter of which was produced by Andy Partridge and John Leckie. The Lilac Time was dropped by Fontana then briefly signed to Creation Records, where the band was subsequently managed by label head Alan McGee. The band's sole release on Creation was Astronauts, in 1990. The Duffy brothers' cousin, noted-session musician Cara Tivey, contributed organ and piano to the album. The band later regrouped with Claire Worrall and Melvin Duffy (no relation to the brothers) and recorded Looking For A Day In The Night with producer Stephen Street for spinART Records in 1999. They then released Lilac 6 on Cooking Vinyl in 2001, followed by Keep Going, which was released in 2003 under the name "Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time" on Folk Modern. Runout Groove was released on 22 October 2007 on Bogus Frontage. The band played the 2007 Green Man Festival and the Queen Elizabeth Hall as a six-piece. The band's gig at the Green Man Festival serves as the backdrop to the film "Memory & Desire — 30 Years in the Wilderness With Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time." The documentary was filmed over six years by Douglas Arrowsmith, who included new and vintage Lilac footage. The film is accompanied by a Universal Records album of the same name, which compiles songs from Duffy's thirty years of music making. The Queen Elizabeth Hall concert is to be released as a live recording. No Sad Songs was released on Tapete Records in April 2015. A new Lilac Time album, Return to Us is planned for release in late 2017.

Eartha Kitt as Catwoman has been fascinating from a 2018 perspective as we see how the treatment of the Catwoman character has changed with the recasting of the role with the African American actress. 1968 wasn't as progressive as we might have liked to have seen, here at BATMANLAND. Also this week, the return of Milton Berle as Louie The Lilac.

Memory Tapes - Yes I Know One of my favourite songs of recent years, with 'Yes I know' Dayve Hawk mixes strident military drums with gothic 80s pop stylings. 3. Jonny Greenwood - Toki no Senrei wo Uketeinai mono wo Yomuna A stand out track from Jonny Greenwoods stunning soundtrack for the film adaptation of Haruki Murakami's book 'Norwegian Wood'. 4. Seti The First - Le Basinette Noir The opener from the debut album 'Melting Cavalry' by Dublin based Seti The First. 5. Clark - Mother McKnight A woozy, warm and playful Chris Clark rarity on a release called 'Throttle Clarence'. 6. Katie Kim - Your Mountains Katie Kim at her brilliant best with this fragile lullaby from her 2012 'Cover to Flood' album. 7. Bogdan Raczynski - Alright (Part 7) The Canadian prankster is better known for insane drill and bass excursions or tongue in cheek hyperactive mashups but dig a little deeper and you'll unearth exquisite gems like this. 8. Jai Paul - Jasmine Its always refreshing to have your perception challenged, so I'll never forget hearing the teeth wobbling bass that unhinges everything in this insanely soulful track. 9. Parks - Topaz This beautiful song takes me back to a more innocent time for ambient music when it was enough to get lost in plateaus of revolving patterns. 10. Ex Confusion - Chapter 5 I discovered Japanese guitarist/laptop minimalist Atsuhito Omori by accident last year but he has subsequently become a mainstay in all my playlists. 11. A Winged Victory For The Sullen - Steep Hills Of Vicodin Tears Just when I thought US drone masters 'Stars of The Lid' were closing up shop, this stunning side project appears out of nowhere. For me this particular track stands out for its uncharacteristically hopeful and conclusive cello sequence. 12. Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises I actually pulled over the car and parked by the side of the road to listen carefully when I heard this first come on the radio one evening, one of those pinned to the earth moments. It feels like the song that represents everything about Mark Kozelek as an artist. 13. Lilac Time - Love Becomes a Savage I rediscovered this 1987 gem by The Lilac Time earlier this year. I adored it years ago. It acts as a great reminder of a particular strain of gothic pop recalled and touched on by many artists such as Junior Boys and Memory Tapes now. 14. Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou - Mother's Love A recent discovery but from an older time, this piece sums up everything wonderful and unique about the music of this Ethiopian nun who still plays for up to eight hours a day in a monastery in Jerusalem where she now resides. 15. The Leisure Society - We were Wasted This song for me acts as a sister piece to Mark Kozeleks 'Admiral Fell Promises' with its delicate nylon string guitar arrangement and lush vocal harmonies. 16. Message to Bears - Wake Me A wonderful uplifting piece by Oxford based multi instrumentalist Jerome Alexander. 17. Joe Keawe & His Harmony Hawaiians - Hookipa Paka After a recent exploration into the cheerful waters of vintage Hawaiian music, I stumbled upon this slow reflective gem. 18. Cleoma Breaux & Joe Falcon - Mon vieux d'autrefois A similar recent dive into cajun music resulted in discovering the music of Joe Falcon (1900-1965) and his wife Cleoma Breaux (1906–1941). 19. Clark - Frost Investigation Another music box themed piece seeing as we're wrapping things up. 20. The Doobie Brothers - Busted Down Around O'Connelly Corners I'll finish off with this brief beautiful guitar passage by Doobie Brothers guitarist James Earl Luft.

Chosen Time - New Order Special Note from DJ Tintin: While originally recorded in 2011, I re-recorded this May 28, 2017 to correct a few of the recording glitches from the original post. Since the original post, I also found a remix version of "Heaven Is Waiting" by Danse Society, which I have substituted for the album version.  Notes and other random things: Every so often, I go real old school with the old school. The multiplier makes this podcast feeble decrepit school in some ways. Everything you hear in this one is roughly 1981-1985, the exceptions being Underneath the Radar by Underworld and club/radio mainstay Just Like Heaven by The Cure. This episode begins with Duran Duran's Rio, the lead-off track for their album of the same name. The particular version here, the Carnival Version, is very similar to the original, though it contains a few more measures of instrumentation for a nice change of pace to the familiar one any retro lovers will know by heart. Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy, known for his catchy 80s tune Kiss Me and for his band The Lilac Time, was the original vocalist for the band, though he left after a year figuring they would go nowhere. Simon Le Bon eventually became the frontman and the highly recognizable face of the group, though it's keyboardist Nick Rhodes with his flair for production and keyboard wizardry that really helped define the group's sound. An avid fine artist, he was acutely aware early on of the power that music videos could have on album sales, as any boy on the verge of his teens will recall from the early days of MTV. Though most guys at that age were taunted and teased mercilessly for listening to such flamboyant music, Duran Duran were an early guilty pleasure that found their way into my regular music rotation when I wasn't hanging out with the rabble-rousers. Speaking of Mr. Rhodes, there is a larger connection between Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo, the second band appearing in this episode, than just the beat matching. It was Nick who discovered them and persuaded them to sign with EMI records despite a bidding war among three other record labels. He also helped produce their first album, White Feathers, along with Duran Duran producer Colin Thurston (who has made several appearances here on CRC doing work for Talk Talk and others). That album contained the title track heard here. An interesting side note: Nick also produced Kajagoogoo's biggest hit, Too Shy, which went on to top the charts in 1983. The kicker is that Duran Duran wouldn't have their own number one until later to the chagrin of Nick. I'm certain there are no sour grapes as Duran Duran went on to have a much longer career when all was said and done. Over the past two episodes, the summer edition and this week's new wave edition, you may have seen and heard your fill of Modern English for a while. Both Face of Wood and now the heartbreakingly overplayed I Melt With You come from the band's second album called After the Snow. If I may say so, it is one of my all-time favorite albums. Vocalist Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell, Michael Conroy, Richard Brown, and Stephen Walker put together a sound that resonates with me more than any other: guitars, percussion, excellent vocal timbre and just the right level of keyboard accoutrements. I'm pretty sure that is the reason I fell in love with New Order and mid-80s The Cure as well. Produced by Hugh Jones, who did a lot of work with Echo and the Bunnymen, and released in 1983, After the Snow has great melodies, lovely arrangements and every song hits the sweet spot. And though I Melt With You was re-recorded and re-issued in '90, used in a Burger King ad, a Hershey ad, a Ritz ad, a Taco Bell ad and in cover form by Nouvelle Vague for automaker GMC, and overplayed on 80s flashback radio shows everywhere, if you can somehow transport yourself back in time and try to remember how you felt when you first heard it, you'll recall just how amazing this song still is. A little Modern English trivia: The band formed in Colchester, Essex in 1977 and were originally called The Lepers. Thankfully that didn't stick. Heaven is Waiting from Danse Society represents the pinnacle of the band's early output. Kind of like B-Movie, they suffered from poor timing, ill-conceived decisions from label management and never really were able to capitalize on momentum. While recording the material for the Heaven is Waiting album, the guys sought to work with Ian Broudie, who produced for Echo and the Bunnymen, had his own band Care and later went on to form The Lightning Seeds. Anyway, Ian had other projects in the works and the band instead teamed up with Nigel Gray, who had worked with the Police and Siouxsie and the Banshees. It should have been a good fit, but Gray apparently had a rigid schedule consisting of 10am -5pm sessions. The problem was that even if a session was going well, he would call it a day at 5pm. The result was an album that, according to keyboardist Lyndon Scarfe, "was dull, lifeless, uninspired, and depressed the shit out of us." While the guys did eventually hook up with Brodie to retool the tracks, their Arista label decided to release the Stones cover 2000 Light Years from Home as their third single, something the band fought adamantly to prevent. Despite a video and a huge promotional push, the single failed to chart and it thus began their ultimate demise. Shame, really.  As founder of 415 Records, Howie Klein brought bands like Wire Train, Translator, Until December and Red Rockers to the fore. He later went on to become the President of Reprise Records from 1989 until 2001. In this episode, you'll hear one of the ultimate sexual equivocations from the 80s in the track Never Say Never by Romeo Void, another one of Klein's finds. Lead singer Deborah Iyall is Native American and if anyone could look less like how she sounds, Deborah would certainly qualify with her half-spoken, half-sung style. Though Romeo Void disbanded in 1985, she did a couple of solo albums and, having teamed up with songwriter Peter Dunne, is still performing live today, though they haven't quite generated the buzz that she and her band did in 1982 with this tune. That's all for this episode. As always, if you like any of the music you hear, please support the artists. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the image above is from artist Patrick Nagel. His iconic work appeared on the cover of the Rio album by Duran Duran, though an alternate image was used on the 2001 limited edition remastered version. Nagel died in 1984 at the young age of 38. He was found dead in his car after suffering an apparent heart attack. Ironically, he had earlier participated in a 15-minute celebrity Aerobathon to support the American Heart Association.  So, on that happy note ... but I'll be back again soon with another episode, so there's that! Thanks again to everyone for your continued support.
