The Move: “Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited” (Shazam, 1970)The Rolling Stones: “Midnight Rambler – Live 1969” (Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, 1970)David Bowie: “All the Madmen” (The Man Who Sold the World, 1970)Porter Wagoner: “The Rubber Room” (Single, 1971)Don McLean: “Vincent” (American Pie, 1971)Pink Floyd: “Brain Damage” (Dark Side of the Moon, 1973)Shu-Bi-Dua: “Små blå mænd” (Shu-Bi-Dua, 1974)Suicide: ”Frankie Teardrop” (Suicide, 1977)Joy Division: ”She's Lost Control” (Unknown Pleasures, 1979)Roky Erickson and the Aliens: “I Think of Demons” (Roky Erickson and the Aliens, 1980)Pixies: “Where Is My Mind?” (Surfer Rosa, 1988)Nirvana: “Lithium” (Nevermind, 1991)Lisa Germano: “…a psychopath” (Geek the Girl, 1994)Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: “Song of Joy” (Murder Ballads, 1996)Stina Nordenstam: “People Are Strange” (People Are Strange, 1998)Sia: “Breathe Me” (Color the Small One, 2004)Rihanna: “Disturbia” (Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded, 2008)Bebe Rexha: “I'm Gonna Show You Crazy” (I Don't Wanna Grow Up-EP, 2015)Melanie Martinez: “Mad Hatter” (Cry Baby, 2015)

¿Y la canción “Take this waltz” de Leonard Cohen?
Who writes the fortunes in fortune cookies? Why are so many of them not really fortunes at all? Why did some fortunes turn ominous for a while? (“After today, you shall have a deeper understanding of both good and evil.”) And who was behind the theft of countless fortunes? Lidia Jean Kott has the answers to these questions, and to one more: Where do fortune cookies come from? Hint: It's not China. Although probably best known as a member of John Mellencamp's backing band, drummer Kenny Aronoff is one of rock's most in-demand session players, having played with some of the genre's biggest names. ******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! www.richredmond.com/listen Raised in Massachusetts, Aronoff was self-taught early on, as he played in his first band at the age of ten (and subsequently played in various local rock outfits throughout his teenage years). But by the age of 16, Aronoff began to seriously study classical music, as he picked up a thing or two from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, before studying at the University of Massachusetts and at Indiana University (where he was awarded a 'Performer's Certificate'). Even during summers off from his schooling, Aronoff continued to hone his chops by playing at both the Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals. Upon graduating from Indiana University in 1976, Aronoff was offered spots playing timpani with several different orchestras throughout the world, but turned down the offers to relocate back north - studying and playing (mostly fusion-jazz) in both Boston and New York. After a year, Aronoff opted to relocate back to Indiana, where he paid his dues over the next few years playing regularly with bands on the Midwest club circuit. By 1980, Aronoff had landed the break in his music career that he had long sought - nabbing a spot in John Mellencamp's group. Although Mellencamp had released several albums during the late '70s, it was shortly after Aronoff's arrival into the band that Mellencamp's career took off, as he focused more on a roots-rock direction/sound. Aronoff remained with Mellencamp for over 15 years, supplying the back beat on such hit albums as 1980's Nothin' Matters, 1982's American Fool, 1983's Uh-Huh, 1985's Scarecrow, 1987's Lonesome Jubilee, 1989's Big Daddy, 1991's Whenever We Wanted, 1993's Human Wheels, 1994's Dance Naked, and 1996's Mr. Happy Go Lucky. Beginning in the mid '80s, Aronoff served as a session drummer for countless renowned artists, as he played on albums by Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, Belinda Carlisle, Indigo Girls, Meat Loaf, Lisa Germano, Melissa Etheridge, Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Travis Tritt, and Willie Nelson, among countless others. Besides backing other artists on record, Aronoff has also performed and/or toured alongside others besides Mellencamp, including Willie Nelson, Melissa Etheridge, Bob Seger, John Fogerty, Richie Sambora, Smashing Pumpkins, Joe Cocker and many others. Additionally, Aronoff has taught as an associate professor at Indiana University, performed at drum clinics, and produced several instructional videos, including Power Workout One, Power Workout Two, and Laying it Down: the Basics of Rock Drumming. Aronoff has also been named the top 'Pop/Rock Drummer' four five years and 'Studio Drummer' for four years by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine, proving that his talents haven't gone unnoticed by music fans worldwide. Some Things That Came Up: -Drummers know how to survive -I want to play in the Beatles, Mom! Call them! -RPS - Repetition, Preparation for Success -PPP - Personality, People Skills and Perseverance -Mellencamp's Producer fired him 5 weeks in -"Am I your drummer or WHAT??" -Recording the iconic fill in Jack and Diane -American Fool was the hardest record he ever made -Singing "Hurts So Good" while playing makes you more confident -Playing with Michelle Branch -Departing from John :: I've been working with one superstar, now I'm going to work with all the others! -Don Was comes to light -It's not about ME, it's about THEM -COVID wrecking the live performance industry -Having to adapt -Staying healthy and eating right Follow Kenny: www.kennyaronoff.com @kennyaronoff The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. Thor Harris was one of the inspirations for starting this podcast. Thor has been the drummer for Shearwater, the Swans, Thor and Friends, Amanda Palmer, Hospital Ships, Xiu Xiu, Angels of Light, Bill Callahan, Lisa Germano, and a dozen other bands. He's a carpenter, a plumber, a painter, a sculptor, a writer, and a has been an outspoken advocate for getting the help you need if you're suffering from depression. He's written and illustrated a book called Ocean of Despair, a firsthand account of surviving a nervous breakdown. He's basically the man I had sort of hoped to grow up to be. I love his music. This week by request we're checking out the 1996 album Excerpts from a Love Circus by Lisa Germano. Working in a space filled with stark and occasionally dissonant sounds, the relaxed vocals combine darkness and humor in a way that caught us both off guard. While you won’t want to put this on your workout mix, we had a lot of fun (? I guess) discovering the world Lisa Germano inhabits on Excerpts.Songs in this Episode:Intro - Lovesick3:36 - History of the Band12:41 - A Beautiful Schizophrenic /“Where's Miamo-Tutti” by Dorothy18:38 - Victoria's Secret/”Just a Bad Dream” by Miamo-Tutti21:59 - LovesickOutro - BruisesFollow on Twitter / FacebookRequest A Review / Buy A T-Shirt

You could say that Lisa Germano colors outside the lines of conventional pop music. Her songs are oftentimes brutally honest and jarringly unconventional, yet deeply personal – she plays the lion’s share of the instruments herself. Germano has just released her ninth album called No Elephants. Her use of everyday electronics (like cellphone noises), interspersed with the sounds of bees and animals, somehow manages to be both strange and beautiful at the same time. We talk to her about how she collected the array of sounds on the record and the inspiration behind several of the songs. She also touches on her time as violinist in John Mellencamp’s band.
The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band performs at the Library of Congress. Speaker Biography: The Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band formed in 1987, playing local venues around Bloomington, Indiana. Original members included Jeff White, who went on to play with superstars like Alison Krauss and Vince Gill; singer-songwriter Bob Lucas; and Lisa Germano, who later played fiddle with John Mellencamp's band. The current members have their own musical history. Brian Lappin played with bluegrass legends Jimmy Martin and Earl Taylor, and the bands The Ragin' Texans and The Crawdads. His tasteful banjo playing reflects the solid influences of Earle Scruggs and J.D. Crowe. Doug Harden has played mandolin since 1969. His early years were spent at the old Bean Blossom Jamboree barn, and in the Brown County Band. Doug has also spent time in the original Kentucky Ramblers and the band Pine Mountain. Greg Norman started at a local jam session and later joined the Off the Line bluegrass band and singer-songwriter Janne Henshaw's band. Kent Todd was trained in classical violin, and was steered toward bluegrass by his father Scott, also a bluegrass musician; he has played with Bill Grant and Dehila Belle, Michael Cleveland and the Blue Hollow Band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, and currently is also a member of the Troubled Waters Band. The youngest member of the NTBBB, Brady Stogdill, is a member of the original International Bluegrass Music Association's Young Acoustic All Stars; his father Dean was a great banjo player, and he has learned to play almost anything with strings on it.
