In this episode Elizabeth reflects upon the provocative poem by renowned Buddhist teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, entitled, “Looking Into the World.” “It's not a cozy poem,” she says, “It's an incantation to NOT trust, a reflection on loneliness, and a tribute to the freedom and confidence that comes from standing on our own two feet.” You have to put your familiar views aside to explore this one!
Episode Overview: In this insightful episode, we delve into the critical but often misunderstood realm of performance metrics in business: leading and lagging indicators. We explore why scorecards are pivotal yet challenging to implement in companies, particularly those using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) or similar frameworks. Join us as we discuss how to shift focus from merely tracking results to understanding and measuring the activities that lead to those outcomes. Key Points: Introduction to Indicators: Definition of leading indicators: Measures that predict future performance. They are proactive and action-oriented. Definition of lagging indicators: Outcomes that follow the events, often used to confirm patterns or results but not to predict them. The Difficulty with Scorecards: Why setting up an effective scorecard is one of the toughest tasks in business management. The common mistake of focusing solely on results (lagging indicators) without considering what drives these results. Leading Indicators: The Path to Results: Discussion on how businesses can identify activities (leading indicators) that directly influence desired outcomes. Examples: Customer engagement activities leading to sales, or employee training hours leading to improved service quality. The Weight Loss Analogy: Comparing business metrics to personal health goals: Just like losing weight involves more than just stepping on a scale (lagging indicator), it requires monitoring diet and exercise (leading indicators). How this analogy can help managers rethink their approach to business metrics. Looking Into the Future: The importance of predictive analytics in business. How companies can use leading indicators to forecast and prepare for future trends or downturns. Implementing Leading Indicators: Steps to integrate leading indicators into your business strategy. Case studies or hypothetical scenarios where focusing on leading indicators turned around business performance. Wrap-Up: Recap of the importance of looking forward with leading indicators, rather than backward with lagging ones. Encouragement for listeners to review their current scorecards and consider adjustments. Call to Action: Subscribe to the podcast for more insights on business strategy and performance management. Share your own experiences with leading vs. lagging indicators in the comments or via social media. This episode promises not only to educate but also to transform how leaders perceive and utilize metrics in steering their companies towards success. Tune in to shift your perspective from what has happened to what could happen with the right focus on leading indicators. sponsors- check them out The software that keeps our life and business together: Ninety.io

In Bonus Episode #07, Tobin Mayell joins the show for the first of a two-part conversation honoring the lives of his late parents—Norm Mayell and Christine Waddell. Here, Tobin recounts for us the core elements in his relationship with Norm—open-heartedly offering glimpses into the arc of the their father-son story. From early, unrequited longings to adult acceptances and eventually to the transmissions found in Norm's passing away from cancer in August of 2022, we come see that the father-son relationship has many moments over the course of time and just how much can live inside one parent-child relationship. We learn that Norm was a drummer in such bands as Sopwith Camel, Blue Cheer, and Norman Greenbaum, frequently taking him on the road while Tobin lived with his mother. We also learn that Norm later became a devout golfer, finding a spiritual magic in the game. Across his life we come to see that among other things, Norm lived with a kind-of private wisdom and natural magnetism that drew people towards him.Through this conversation with the How Humans Work show host, Jef Szi, Tobin helps us realize how death and life work hand-in-hand to give us unexpected teachings. Much was born for Tobin in his father's dying process. Tobin's own musical calling found new energy as the journey to memorialize his father placed Tobin—literally and figuratively—behind Norm's drumkit. As Tobin finds himself playing Norm's drums, singing his songs, and playing with Norm's former bandmates is a symmetry that is as satisfying as it is moving. Equally profound is hearing the unguarded connection that accompanies the moment—how childhood hungers were able to come full circle in ways that only Tobin can express. Looking Into the Beyond offers a profound validation the web of life. It shows us something of the essence of Norm's life as a man, a father, and musician, but it also shows us how the act of death is generative to those that live—releasing unfinished hurts and inspiring the energy of life to continue. As always, you are invited to listen-in, because in these two episodes that dive into Tobin's very personal journey of losing both his parents within months of one another, we get a real dose of how life and death collaborate in ways that are impossible to know beforehand.

Join Jamie and Maggie Clark with their guest, Alena Chapman, as they talk about her journey to soul evolution. Alena is known to many as the “Soul Curator,” on top of being a radio show and podcast host and international best-selling author. She shares details about her book, Hello Soul. Self-Realization Alena says that when things are good in our lives, we never question them. It is already good, so why would we? When things go beautifully for you, it is favorable. She refers to it as her “magic.” Suppose the magic is gone. That is when we tend to ask ourselves, “why is this hard?” or “why is this too heavy?” “Why am I tired?” The soul is here with a purpose, and living according to how others want you to live goes against the very foundation of why you are here. It takes self-realization to connect with your soul purpose. It may take time and a lot of life experiences, but everything will be worth it. Looking Into the Soul A common saying goes, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” Alena's gift is precisely that. Whenever she sees a person, one look at their eyes, and she can see their soul. Alena can tell their story only through their eyes. Aside from seeing a living person's soul, she can also see ghosts, or what she refers to as lost souls. Given this gift of sight, Alena's purpose is to open the light for the lost souls. She serves as a guide to these souls to continue with their evolution. About Alena Chapman: As her new book title, Hello Soul, would suggest, Alena Chapman offers us ways past the prison of our inner critic and through any toxic relationships, addictions, and self-sabotage through activating our soul's manifesto – which is always to heal. Referred to by many as a “Soul Curator,” Alena works her “magic” by wisely integrating the wisdom of various religions, spiritual modalities, and scientific research to bring clarity, ease, and flow along with greater understanding to all. She's on a quest to help people everywhere connect to their soul's purpose and experience abundance while on the journey. She works with clients around the world to help them identify what they are really here to achieve in life from a space of compassion, non-judgment, and love. Alena has been a guest on ABC, CBS, PBS, iHeart Radio, Law of Attraction Radio, and many conferences, interviews, and events, including Les Brown, Bob Proctor, and Elizabeth Gilbert. A certified counselor with Right Relations, Alena has also studied with Dr. Wayne Dyer, Bob Proctor, and countless others on top of her personal studies. Market Proof Marketing · Looking Into 2022 and Beyond With Ivy Zelman Kevin Oakley was thrilled to recently host Ivy Zelman, Chief Executive Officer of Zelman & Associates, on the Market Proof Marketing Podcast. Kevin and Ivy discussed a range of topics, including the housing industry for 2022 and beyond, she answers questions that home builders wrote in, she shares her thoughts on build-to-rent, as well as they discuss her book Gimme Shelter: Hard Calls + Soft Skills From a Wall Street Trailblazer, when it's okay to call people out by name, what drives her, and, of course, pancakes. Housing ForecastsIvy shared her forecast for another strong year of starts for residential new construction after this year's constraints to get supply to market. She credits the driving force behind the continued strength in the market with the pipeline of homes and communities coming and the recent land grab. Her forecast is contingent on rates not moving significantly higher, but the predictions are heavily connected to the speed and magnitude of the supply coming to market. On the other hand, she believes home prices will likely begin to moderate as affordability pressure mounts. With the increased costs of land, labor, and materials, she foresees that if demand remains healthy the worst-case scenario could be that we see more incentives, which could lead to profitability squeezing and more competitive dynamics. They also took a look further into the future about how the decelerating number of households throughout the decades will eventually impact housing if the level of supply grows too much in comparison. RegionalityIvy dives into some questions submitted by Market Proof Marketing listeners about the different markets across the country. She noted that red states are in a better position than blue states with a few anomalies. The southeast and southwest have the strongest household growth, and builders and developers have concentrated their capital allocation to those markets. That does create some risk with the amount of supply coming to those areas. However, there are benefits and opportunities in markets outside those areas, including the Midwest. Areas with fewer public homebuilding companies often have a healthier dynamic because they don't have those builders pushing up land prices, creating high supply, and yielding to pressure to move inventory. Single-Family Build to RentIvy and Kevin also discussed the build-to-rent market and how it is affecting land prices and how it will affect the future of homeownership. Ivy noted that $60 billion of capital had been publicly announced to pursue build to rent, and the companies behind the projects are willing to pay up for that land so that they can tell investors they've put their money to work. Ultimately, she believes that it can be a great product offering for some segment of the population, but with such a dramatic ramp of supply in the pipeline, there is a risk we're going to overbuild without the necessary demand. From Ivy's book, Gimme ShelterKevin shared one of his favorite quotes from Ivy's book. “Don't try to manipulate people when your high-quality work should be enough.” Ivy said her firm strives to provide an unbiased perspective within the industry and that their secret sauce comes from getting the real pulse of the market from homebuilding company owners and executives. They're never trying to make the data and information fit in a box to support a view they already have. Instead, they utilize information to help them understand where the housing market is in the cycle and what the expectations can be going forward, never manipulating anything to make it fit a certain view. Watch below or listen to the full podcast episode for more insights from Ivy Zelman and learn what has made her such a powerful force and leading expert within housing. Randall Grahm, one of California's most innovative vintners, founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard and Popelouchum is the guest of Looking Into wine.We started by talking about his early days. After three years studying philosophy at Santa Cruz University, and completing a winemaking degree at UC Davis, Grahm acquired a vineyard site at Bonny Doon in the Santa Cruz mountains. His first dream was to make Pinot Noir, but he soon realised that it was too warm on the mountain. He then moved to Syrah with a great deal of success. Grahm recalls how it was to work with the grape in the 70s, and how difficult it was to find good cuttings.Continuing with Rhône varieties Grahm started to grow Grenache and Mourvedre. ‘I thought that if I blended those grapes maybe something good would be produced’, his beliefs were well-founded. In 1984 he produced the first vintage of the wine with which he will forever be associated, Le Cigare Volant (the story of the name features in the interview). Cigare, a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre (Since 2017 changed to Cinsault), Syrah, and other classic Châteauneuf grapes. During his high time, Randall produced more than 30 wines on any given vintage. I ask which wine he was most proud of and impressed by the quality. His writings constantly return to the concept that has dominated his life: the search for a true vin de terroir, not a vin d’effort.Randall's accolades are as numerous as the risks that he took over the years, including producing one of the first dry roses of California in the 90s, staging the "funeral" of Mr Bouchon aka Cork, using Demijohns (all the reasons are discussed in the interview) and he even managed to be interviewed by Oprah. We then discussed his latest project Popelouchum (Poh-puh-loo-shoom), a "New World grand cru" experimental vineyard in which Grahm hopes to breed 10,000 new grape varieties. He explains how he's using natural cross-breeding to find a variety that is 100% suited to the growing condition of the site. The project will take generations and so the restless experimentation continues. We will have to wait a long time to see the results of the San Juan Bautista project but whatever sort of wine it produces it will be nothing less than interesting. And Grahm will be that much closer to his goal of creating a true vin de terroir.Randall Grahm is truly a maverick winemaker that has inspired many others in California.

In episode twelve, Tim and Tuesday talk about how we honour and interpret our ancestors’ actions, roles, and impacts — think reverberations of colonialism and class — to grasp the underpinnings of our current world.1.12 —— SHOW NOTESTim: I’ve been doing a lot of work around what it means to have been raised and educated within my class. I realized the need to own the impacts of my ancestry on me and my life, my brother, my sister, parents and friends. This provided a new invitation to see it and take it in—not only how I’m often approached which is colonizer-based. Tues: We are talking about ancestors on two levels: our direct ancestors and their impact on our families and ancestors at large (our people and their impacts). That’s not always a straight line. Tim: We are already ancestors by virtue of being alive. We need to begin to think of ourselves as ancestors.Tues: For me it’s the whole view that says, ‘can I soften my heart to let in that whole view; while very much holding that right now our pasts, our presents and our future is absolutely impacted by our positioning related to that colonialism.’Tim: This is about analyzing our own society with the same rigor we apply to other areas of our society. What is the emotional and psychological state of the people in senior leadership positions? How is that playing out?Tues: The systems aren’t broken. They are doing what they were designed to do.Tim: This ends with how I raise my own children. The power to change is in my house. And something else also starts here, which is what so much of our work and friendship is—the ability to be in whatever happens next and knowing what has come before.POEM: ‘The Boxer’ by Tim MerryThey abandoned meThey should have been thereI was leftBereftAloneCurled up under a duvet cover from homeWishing to not be seenHeart beating, scared“Why did you leave me here?”Fear PulsingRed, jagged and spiralling From solar plexus outRunning frantic energy through my bodyAll the way to my fingers and toesBut nowhere to run, nobody I knowTo run to“Where were you?”This was meant to be grand adventureNot traumaNot weeping at 43Only feeling meWhen the tears flowHand on heartWe never should have been apartOur familyYou and meIn the empty spaceStepped the boxer, bracedFor any attackCome one, come allI am ready, poised, watchfulWeavingFists up, back to the wall, there is no leavingSadness turned to angerReading to explodeUnloadWhen things get beyond controlProtecting my soulWhen you did notI surrounded myself with a team of defendersBoxerCharmerActorFixerWorkerJokerLoverAngerServerConnectorAll to keep the world at bayBecause it was not safe To come out and playNow slowly I am peeping outMy blurry eyed headOver parapet wallsThere is me Looking inTo the place I protectedWhere I am not longer connected Meeting eye to eyeStarting to cryMore tears to flowMore of myself to knowIf I dare go slowWith the flowOf what the wisdom of my psycheIs unveiling to me nowAt 43I am coming back home, to meSong of the day: Oppression, Ben HarperSubscribe to the podcast now—in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or anywhere else you find podcasts. Are you familiar with fidget spinners? Yeah? Did you know the trend was started by two high school seniors? Allan Maman and Cooper Weiss are the Co-Founders of Fidget360. They made $15,000 in the first week of fidget spinner sales... and that was just the beginning. The Origin Story Allan and Cooper didn’t invent fidget spinners, but they’re the first people to see the opportunity and their marketing kicked off the trend. They produced their first spinners on the 3D printers in their high school, but they didn’t receive any support from the administration. They used the profit from their first week to buy another 3D printer, started making more nonstop, and things have taken off from there. Promoting a New Product They started promoting fidget spinners on social media. First it was just their own Instagram account, but they quickly created an ad and started paying other people to promote the product on their pages. Paid promotion on Instagram got hundreds of thousands of views, and the focus on social media seems to be paying off. 99% of Fidget360 traffic goes through social media, and about 80% of it has come through Instagram. Dealing with Knockoffs & Keeping Market Majority The profit margin on a fidget spinner is incredibly high. They only cost $1-2 to create, but their competitors were selling them for around $20. Fidget360 started by undercutting the market with $15 spinners, which still leaves a healthy margin. They also have other companies in different names selling similar products that are, ultimately, still produced by Fidget360. Looking Into the Future They don’t expect the business to last long term. By capitalizing on the trend until it’s dead, they can build up a sizeable investment for one of their other business ventures.
