After 48 matches of enthralling drama, the AFC Asian Cup 2023 has reached its penultimate stage, with just four nations remaining as they eye off a spot in Saturday's final. Tournament surprise packets Jordan will face heavyweights Korea Republic, while hosts and defending champions Qatar will tackle the might of Iran. Scott McIntyre is joined by Michael Church on Doha's Corniche to look ahead to the two semi-finals and the four nations involved.
Corniche is a noun that refers to a road running along the coast. Our word of the day comes directly from French. Since the mid 19th century it's been used to describe a road along the edge of a cliff or the coast. Here's an example: Taking the corniche to San Francisco may be a little more time-consuming, but the view makes it worth it. Whoever decided to put a road along the coast gets my vote for the state Governor.

Hello and welcome to the 9th episode of my trip! Today's episode is the start of my mini Lebanon Series as I travelled there for 10 days with 100 Rota Viagens Tour Group. The tour was 9 days and I was there a day early to soak up the Beirut atmosphere. This trip was super intense and I am still digesting it! In this episode, I cover the first 3/4 days of my time on the tour in Beirut. I tried to cover as much as possible but there were a few things I missed such as seeing the Murr Tower, the National Museum and some food places but I captured the things that are the most important for me to share with you. Beirut grabbed me and here is my solo episode on it. Enjoy! A gente respeita a cultura deles e é feliz aqui”, desabafou.
For people not afraid to discover a real place with real people, Marseille is the place. From colourful markets (like Noailles market) that will make you feel like you are in Africa, to the Calanques (a natural area of big cliffs falling into the sea - Calanque means fjord), from the Panier area (the oldest place of the town and historically the place where newcomers installed) to the Vieux-Port (old harbor) and the Corniche (a road along the sea) Marseille has definitely a lot to offer. FIFA promised to stage free concerts with international stars for visitors to the official Fan Festival in Qatar during the World Cup. FIFA said the Al Bidda Park in central Doha will host “concerts starring top global and local music acts and live works by internationally acclaimed performance artists” during the 29 days of World Cup games. The tournament starts on Nov. 20. The festival site next to the Corniche waterfront and close to the West Bay neighborhood will be the official viewing area for fans to watch the 64 games on giant screens. A policy on alcohol consumption was confirmed that will allow sponsor Budweiser to serve beer after 6:30 p.m. FIFA said it also plans to hold soccer games at the venue featuring former World Cup stars who are part of its Legends program. More than 1 million visitors are expected at the first World Cup hosted in the Middle East. FIFA said official fan festivals are also planned in other cities worldwide during the tournament. No music acts have yet been confirmed for the Doha venue. Since the 2006 World Cup in Germany, FIFA has run fan zone viewing areas with local organizers in host nations. The first edition included a pre-tournament show in Berlin featuring Nelly Furtado and Simple Minds. At the 2012 European Championship co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine, Elton John gave a free concert at the official Kyiv fan zone one day before the final. The concert was also an AIDS charity benefit. 18WT 053: HORSE RACING - Medina Spirit Stripped of 2021 Kentucky Derby Win. Medina Spirit is no longer the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The colt, who died unexpectedly in December, was officially disqualified by Kentucky racing officials on Monday for failing a drug test after winning the race. Medina Spirit is only the third horse in the race's 147-year history to receive such a penalty after finishing first. The decision means the colt's owner will not collect the $1.8 million first-place check, which was never paid out and will now go to Mandaloun's owner. Churchill Downs, the track in Louisville, Ky., that hosts the Derby, said in a statement that it now recognizes Mandaloun as the winner of the 2021 race. The ruling also erased the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's seventh Kentucky Derby victory, which had been a record. In addition, Baffert was suspended for 90 days beginning March 8 and fined $7,500. The drug found in Medina Spirit's system was betamethasone, a corticosteroid injected into joints to reduce pain and swelling. Baffert said the drug was applied topically to treat a skin rash on Medina Spirit's hind end.The disqualification puts a new stain on a sport that has been troubled by doping problems and places Baffert's reputation and future in the sport in jeopardy. Baffert, whose horses won the Triple Crown in 2015 and 2018, is thoroughbred horse racing's most recognizable personality. The decision by Kentucky racing officials comes at a time when the Triple Crown season is heating up and the quest for qualifying points to earn a spot in the Derby's starting gate is getting urgent. Churchill Downs had already suspended Baffert from the race for two years and refused to award qualifying points to horses he would train for the 2022 Derby.Baffert has three accomplished 3-year-old colts in his barn — two of them, Corniche and Newgrange, are undefeated. If their owners want to participate in the Derby, they must transfer their horses to another trainer and hope to earn qualifying points in future prep races.Last month, Baffert threatened to sue Churchill Downs if the track did not lift the two-year ban, saying that his right to due process was violated and that he had been unlawfully excluded from Churchill Downs and the Derby.Bill Carstanjen, the chief executive of Churchill Downs, said the complaint was “meritless.” He threatened to countersue if it was filed and emphasized that Baffert was a repeat offender. In all, Baffert's horses have failed 30 drug tests over four decades, including five in a recent 13-month period. The necropsy results for Medina Spirit, who died in December indicated that the colt most likely died of a heart attack. The disqualification, along with recent guilty pleas and convictions of prominent trainers and veterinarians for.... Not voting for Bob Baffert trained horses legit or not?Is the effort to ban trainer Bob Baffert from the Kentucky Derby legit and in the best interests of racing, or is it another targeted scapegoat scenario? Attorney Bill Gotimer joins Jonathan Stettin on Past the Wire TV to explore these possibilities along with the legitimacy or lack thereof in excluding horses like Corniche from an Eclipse Award vote. Complicated issues with both legal and moral implications. Suffice to say Jon and Bill do not agree on everything, but they, as many can't nowadays remain civil and cordial despite differing views. Bill provides more of a legal perspective while Jon is a little more from the shall we say street school of thought. However you feel this is an interesting conversation between two passionate and experienced individuals in the Sport of Kings. Thank you for watching Past the Wire TV. Welcome to major Championship flashpoint #4 and this one, got really ugly. It's the Corniche Clash, at the new Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and we had a lot to talk about here. We had Max Verstappen blow a golden chance to take pole position on Saturday before a mistake had him hit the wall on the final corner, gift-wrapping pole to Lewis Hamilton. We had a ridiculous F2 weekend with cars heading to the grid BACKWARDS, and poor Theo Pourchaire and Enzo Fittipaldi sent to hospital after a 72G impact in a 9 minute feature race. And it barely made the Top 5 in ridiculous dialogue to come from this race. Nope, it was all going to plan until Mick Schumacher put it in the wall early on. 2 Red Flags, 2 Standing Restarts, 3 Virtual Safety Cars and 3 debatable incidents from Max Verstappen later... God help us all. We had Max cut Turn 1 twice to keep position. Michael Masi cutting a PLEA DEAL to balance the books, only for Max to do it again and then get accused of brake checking Hamilton into the final corner in a desperation move to keep the DRS advantage. We try to make sense of it all on the show, including questions as to whether it was an intentional brake check at all. The role the stewards played in the messy weekend, including Masi's plea deal, and the 10-second penalty Max took after the flag. We also talk the circuit, a surprising factor in the imported marshals and some of the tracks obvious slapdash design errors that played a role in how this race was managed. We also talk Mercedes' grand opening and grand closing of the Kingspan partnership they announced during the weekend, with obvious controversy given their association with the Grenfell Tower fire of 2017, and Lewis Hamilton being an innocent bystander as many within the media held him accountable for something that had next to nothing to do with him. And finally, we guess who wins the 2021 World Championship as we head to the newly redesigned Abu Dhabi for the season finale, as well as play tribute to the late great, Sir Frank Williams. Rest easy, you legend. See you next week for the finale.

American Fans Discuss The Global Sport
This will be a huge weekend for handicappers to start lining up their Breeders' Cup selections. There will be 9 Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” events from Friday through Monday contested at both ends of the map. We will be joined by two of the country's most experienced handicappers Ralph Siraco and Anthony Stabile. Ralph Siraco is a former track announcer who became a turf writer and broadcaster. He currently hosts the racing radio show Race Day Las Vegas, broadcast on KSHP AM 1400 in Las Vegas. Ralph will cover several races from Santa Anita over Friday and Saturday. 2-year-olds will be featured first and the races are full of blue-blooded individuals with top connections. As usual, Bob Baffert's trainees will be front and center in both. At least three youngsters from his barn are set to make their mark in the G1, $300,000 American Pharoah, headed by his $1,500,000 baby Corniche. In the $200,000 G2 Chandelier, the white-haired wonder sends out two runners including Grace Alder, a smashing winner of the G1 Del Mar Debutante. Baffert is going to pass on the G1 Awesome Again with just one of his trainees, but he is sending out the first-place finisher of the Kentucky Derby. Laurel River won an allowance race at Del Mar so impressively in his two-turn debut earlier this month that Baffert initially entertained thoughts of running in the $300,000 Awesome Again on Saturday at Santa Anita, but upon further review Baffert said Tuesday. he would enter both Medina Spirit, the first-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, and recent Del Mar allowance winner Azul Coast in the Awesome Again, a 1 1/8-mile race expected to include, among others, Tripoli and Tizamagician, the one-two finishers from last month's Pacific Classic at Del Mar. The Awesome Again is a Win and You're In for the Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Anthony “the Big A” Stabile was born at the racetrack. He is now a popular host on Horse Racing Radio Network and will be giving in us his insights into the important races from Belmont Park. Stakes winners Gunite and Wit are expected to take on flashy debut winners Jack Christopher and My Prankster in Saturday's G1, $500,000 Champagne, a Win and You're In race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 5. Gunite, trained by Steve Asmussen, won the G1 Hopeful, defeating Wit by 5 3/4 lengths. Wit, who won the G3 Sanford by eight lengths on July 17, stumbled at the start of the Hopeful but made a sustained bid, finishing three lengths clear of the remainder of the field in second. Wit is trained by Todd Pletcher, who also trains My Prankster, a 10-length debut winner at Saratoga on Aug. 21 going 6 1/2 furlongs. Could there be an upset brewing in the Woodward? Code of Honor, a son of Noble Mission, enjoyed a terrific 3-year-old campaign and figures to be among the choices in a deep Woodward field that is expected to include Art Collector, By My Standards, Dr Post, Forza Di Oro and Maxfield.

We're back with a new series of Honey & Co: The Food Talks all about our new cookbook CHASING SMOKE. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Where there's fire there's delicious food to share, and friendships and memories to make. CHASING SMOKE is a record of our travels around the Levant, chasing and cooking over fire on grills, beaches and bonfires. For the next five weeks we'll be sharing travel stories with you, cooking recipes from our trip and catching up with some of the friends we made in each of the five countries that we visited: Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Jordan. First up is Egypt where we travelled to Cairo and Alexandria. In this episode we make sweet potatoes baked in embers, a dish we tried for the first time on the Corniche waterside in Alexandria, which we add our own almond tahini twist to; we talk to our friend and photographer Patricia Niven who accompanied us on all our trips to take beautiful photos; and we catch up with Laila Hassaballa of Bellies En Route who took us on the most incredible food tour in Cairo. There's charcoal in buckets, cars in carpets and... the dynamite falafel sandwich. Enjoy. --------- Order a copy of Chasing Smoke Follow us on instagram @honeyandco Sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear about new events Follow Patsy @PatriciaNiven and see more of her beautiful work at www.patricianiven.com Follow Laila @belliesenroute and find out more about their tours at https://belliesenroute.com Get 40% off their e-cookbook Table to Table with code: heyhoney --- Ingredients for sweet potato recipe 4 sweet potatoes 100g whole raw almonds, skins on 100g boiling water 1 small clove of garlic, peeled 4 tbsp light vegetable oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar (or use red wine vinegar) 80ml cold water flaky sea salt (plus more to taste) date molasses (optional) --- With thanks to Our guests this week: Patsy @PatriciaNiven and Laila Hassaballa of @belliesenroute Producer: Miranda Hinkley Additional Production: Richard Ward Audio Engineer: Paul Brogden Theme tune: Daniel Winshall Head of Communications: Louisa Cornford A special thank you to Polly Russell for donating her garden
In early September, Zeinab Kaak and Nazeer Mohammed sold almost everything they owned: their home, television, furniture, household goods, even Kaak’s jewelry — all to raise the 15 million Lebanese pounds, or about $2,000, which smugglers asked for to take them to Europe. Mohammed had gone down to Tripoli’s beachfront looking for smugglers: “Everyone knows about it. When you walk on the Corniche, you can hear people going. You can see people going. Everyone is doing it.”He’s talking about the lengths that people are going to escape Lebanon — taking dinghies and small boats to reach Cyprus, an EU nation just 100 miles off of Lebanon’s northern coast.Until recently, it was mostly Syrian and Palestinian refugees making the trip, but increasingly, Lebanese citizens are filling the boats. It’s difficult to know how many Lebanese have chosen the illicit route by sea, but the United Nations Refugee Agency says at least 18 boats attempted the trip between Aug. 29 and Sept. 14. That’s more than the whole of 2019. Related: Migrant workers stuck in Beirut in wake of blastLebanon is suffering its worst financial crisis in decades. The Aug. 4 blast that destroyed the Beirut port also shattered the last bit of hope many had in their country, and any trust they had left in their leaders.Half of the Lebanese are now living below the poverty line, and there is little hope in sight. Political paralysis is holding up reforms that could unlock badly needed aid and loans. And in the meantime, people are growing increasingly desperate. Mohammed used to work as a car mechanic, but it was casual labor. As the financial crisis hit and was compounded by COVID-19, his work dried up.“People don’t even have money to fix their cars anymore. The small parts that cost [15,0000 Lebanese pounds] before now cost 70,000 Lebanese. People don’t have the money.”Nazeer Mohammed, migrant who tried fleeing Lebanon“People don’t even have money to fix their cars anymore,” Mohammed said. “The small parts that cost [15,0000 Lebanese pounds] before now cost 70,000 Lebanese. People don’t have the money.”The cost of almost everything has gone up, but most salaries have not. Diapers have doubled in price, the cost of bread has also increased, and milk formula has tripled in price. ‘No more safety in Lebanon’ Kaak and Mohammed had long wanted to go abroad, but the Beirut blast was the final push. “There is no more safety in Lebanon,” Kaak said. Related: Musicians across the world sing tributes to BeirutSo, on Sept. 7, Kaak, Mohammed and their four children climbed in a boat with dozens of others.“The first night was fine. The waves were calm,” Kaak said. Zeinab Kaak is pictured at her father-in-law’s home in Tripoli. Credit: Rebecca Collard/The World Mohammed pulled up a photo on his phone of that first day on the boat. In it, he holds their 1 1/2-year-old son in the air. The sun appears just to be rising, and the child’s dark curls are blowing in the wind.By the afternoon, it was clear they were lost. The smugglers had tasked one of the other migrants with driving the boat. “They just gave him a compass and said, ‘Go on this specific number,’” Kaak said. “But he didn’t know how to use it.”They were stranded in the Mediterranean Sea. First, the fuel ran out. Then the food and water. There was no cellphone reception, and no way to call for help. They started filling diapers with seawater, trying to filter it so they could wet their mouths under the beating sun. Kaak could see that their son’s small body couldn’t take the conditions, but there was nothing she could do.Related: Lebanon's military gets sweeping powers after Beirut blastHer husband pulled up a video on his phone from before they tried to go to Cyprus. In it, their son dances around the living room in a shirt with a bunny on it while his family claps to cheer him on.Kaak broke down at the sound of her son in happier days. She said the others onboard told her it was better to remember him like this and let him go.She held his body for three days after he died on the boat. His body had begun to bloat. Kaak’s father-in-law said that the blue jeans helped him identify his grandson last week after his body was pulled from the sea. When another young man passed away on the boat, the migrants attached a note to his body before pushing him overboard. “We have dead kids, and we don’t have fuel or water. Someone come please and help us … save us.”Note from the migrants stranded on the boat“We have dead kids, and we don’t have fuel or water,” the note read. “Someone come please and help us … save us.”‘Now, he’s in heaven’When people on the boat began dying, 24-year-old Mohammed Hosni had jumped in the water and swam off to find help.Related: Israel attacks Hezbollah posts after shots fired at soldiersHis brother, Ali Hosni, said the family was suffering the force of Lebanon’s economic crisis. The brothers took turns driving Ali Hosni's taxi cab, but they only brought home around 50,000 Lebanese pounds a day, worth about $7 now. The whole family chipped in to raise the 5 million Lebanese pounds, about $650, to get Mohammed Hosni a seat on the boat to Cyprus. The plan was he’d get to Europe, get a job and send money back for the family. None of the other five siblings have work. A picture of Mohammed Hosni hangs in the streets of his Tripoli neighborhood. Credit: Rebecca Collard/The World “That was the plan. Everyone that went there, that was their plan. Find a good job and start sending money to the people here and don’t let them need anything from anyone else.”Ali Hosni, whose brother died after the boat was stranded“That was the plan. Everyone that went there, that was their plan,” Ali Hosni said. “Find a good job and start sending money to the people here and don’t let them need anything from anyone else.”Instead, friends and family gathered in the streets to receive his body as it was brought back to Tripoli this month, after being pulled from the water near Beirut. The day after his body was returned, Mohammed Hosni’s brother, Ali Hosni, held what he calls a wedding, not a funeral. Long tables were set in the center of their street in Tripoli. People gathered around on plastic chairs. Ali Hosni says all his brother wanted was to leave Lebanon for a better place, and in the end, he succeeded. “Now, he’s in heaven,” Ali Hosni said. Both Ali Hosni and Kaak say they don’t blame the smugglers for what happened, but the government who put them in that situation. The boat that Zeinab Kaak and Nazeer Mohammed took trying to get to Cyprus was rescued after being stranded at sea. Credit: Courtesy of Nazeer Mohammed After eight days at sea, the boat was finally rescued by a Turkish ship and brought to the blasted out port in Beirut. Kaak, who had lost her son, refused to get off the boat. “I didn't want to come back,” she said. “I kept hanging on to the rails of the Turkish ship.”Kaak and Mohammed have come back to even less than they had before. No house, no furniture and without their youngest child. But when asked if she would do it again, Kaak answered quickly: “Yes.”Additional reporting by Hassan Harfoush.

This region's breath-taking coastline is traversed by three coastal routes: the low, middle, and high corniche. Sitting upon the Via Aurelia, the grand, or high, corniche caps the cliffs with staggering Mediterranean vistas. High above the sea, Eze, touristy yet magnificent, offers art and gastronomy in its medieval center.
