Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with authors Annabel Monaghan and Alix Strauss as they discuss their books Summer Romance (Annabel Monaghan) and The Joy of Funerals (Alix Strauss). About Annabel Monaghan: Annabel Monaghan is the author of LibraryReads pick Same Time Next Summer and Indie Next and LibraryReads pick Nora Goes Off Script, as well as two young adult novels and Does This Volvo Make My Butt Look Big?, a selection of laugh-out-loud columns that appeared in the Huffington Post, the Week, and the Rye Record. She lives in Rye, New York, with her family. About Summer Romance: The heart-tugging and hilarious story of a professional organizer whose life is a mess, and the summer she gets unstuck with the help of someone unexpected from her past, by the bestselling author of Same Time Next Summer and Nora Goes Off Script. Benefits of a summer romance: It's always fun, always brief, and no one gets their heart broken. Ali Morris is a professional organizer whose own life is a mess. Her mom died two years ago, then her husband left, and she hasn't worn pants with a zipper in longer than she cares to remember. No one is more surprised than Ali when the first time she takes off her wedding ring and puts on pants with hardware—overalls count, right?—she meets someone. Or rather, her dog claims a man for her in the same way he claimed his favorite of her three children: by peeing on him. Ethan smiles at Ali like her pants are just right—like he likes what he sees. He looks at her as if she's a version of herself she hasn't been in a long while. The last thing newly single mom Ali needs is to make her life messier, but there's no harm in a little summer romance. Is there?   About Alix Strauss: Alix Strauss is a trend, culture and lifestyle journalist; an award-winning, four-time published author; speaker; and frequent contributor to The New York Times. Her books include: The Joy of Funerals (St. Martin's Press & Palagram Press), Based Upon Availability (Harper Collins), and Death Becomes Them: Unearthing the Suicides of the Brilliant, the Famous and the Notorious (Harper Collins). She is also the editor of Have I Got a Guy for You (Simon & Schuster), an anthology of mother-coordinated dating horror stories. Her work has been optioned for several TV and film projects. A media-savvy social satirist, she has been a featured lifestyle, travel, and trend writer on national morning and talk shows including ABC, CBS, CNN, and the Today Show. During the past 25 years she has written over 1500 articles. Her articles, which have appeared in Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Conde Nast Traveler, the Financial Times, Time Magazine, and Departures, among others, and cover a range of topics from trends in beauty, travel, and food to celebrity interviews. The Joy of Funerals is an Ingram Award winner and was named Best Debut Novel by The New York Resident. Alix was the inaugural “First Chapters” pick, Cosmopolitan Magazine's new launchpad of fiction excerpts, giving readers exclusive sneak peeks of gripping new work. Her essays and short fiction have appeared in the Primavera Literary Journal, Hampton Shorts Literary Journal, The Idaho Review, Quality Women's Fiction, The Blue Moon Café III, Sex, Drugs & Gefilte Fish: The Heeb Storytelling Collection, and A Kudzu Christmas. Her short story, “Shrinking Away”, won the David Dornstein Creative Writing Award. She is the recipient of several awards and fellowships from programs such as the Wesleyan Writers Conference, the Skidmore College Writerʼs Institute, the Sarah Lawrence Summer Program, and the Squaw Valleyʼs Screenwritersʼ Summer Program. Alix lectures extensively and has been a keynote speaker, moderator, or panelist at over 200 conferences, symposiums, seminars, and summits including The Southern Festival of Books, The Northwest Bookfest, The New England's Writer's Conference, Wesleyan Writer's Conference, The 92nd Street Y, New York University, Center for Communications, University of Connecticut, and Columbia University. She was chosen to speak at the National Jewish Book Festival and is on the National Speakers Bureau for Israeli Bonds. Alix Lives in Manhattan. You can connect with her at alixstrauss.com or @alixstrauss. About The Joy of Funerals: From the very first page, readers are drawn into the strange, often humorous world where nine women grapple with sex, power, love, and death. Meet a widow who lusts…a daughter who aches…a lover who obsesses…a shopaholic who hungers… a daredevil who desires…a single woman who longs…an outsider who hopes…an artist who craves…and a funeral-junkie who needs. These are the women who inhabit the eerily honest, often heartbreaking world Alix Strauss has created in The Joy of Funerals. Throughout this powerful and provocative collection, these characters explore the basic need for human connection while seeking to understand themselves better. It is the ‘where do I belong' and the ‘how do I fit in' that these sad, bright and amazingly strong women seek to answer. In “Recovering Larry,” a woman mourns for her dead husband by having sex with grieving men. In “Shrinking Away,” a woman pays a daring shiva call on her psychiatrist's widow. “Swimming Without Annette” explores a woman's obsession with her wife's killer, while “Still Life” peers into the life of a pregnant artist who wishes to paint herself out of a bad marriage and into a prettier world. In “Post-Dated,” a single woman wonders if her recently defunct date was perhaps the perfect man. Read independently, these vivid and raw stories stand on their own. When read as a collection, they are anchored together by the novella, “The Joy of Funerals,” which follows the life of Nina, a lonely, single thirty-something woman who attends the funerals of the deceased characters in the previous stories. Begun as an essay in the Lives column of The New York Times magazine, The Joy of Funerals is written with raw wit, mordant humor and a uniquely penetrating voice as Strauss turns the spotlight on the unattractive subjects of loss, grief and loneliness. Today, I am blessed to have Dr. Russell Kennedy here with me. He is a medical practitioner who also holds a degree in neuroscience and is dedicated to assisting those with mental illness. In addition, he is the author of the book Anxiety Rx, a certified yoga instructor, a speaker with the National Speakers Bureau. For many years, he worked as a doctor during the day and a stand-up comedian at night, appearing in comedy clubs all over the country. His expertise is anxiety because he too suffered from it for a long time and wants to prevent others from going through what he did. He is well-known as The Anxiety MD.  Dr. Kennedy grew up with a father who had a lot of challenges and essentially faced many challenges himself. His father had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and had a lot of trauma in his environment growing up. One of the reasons Dr. Kennedy became a physician was his feeling of impotence watching his dad decline over and over and he wanted to have power over illness somewhat. In this episode, Dr. Kennedy speaks about his experiences with mental illnesses. He also talks about his challenges growing up with a mentally challenged father and how he was able to transform into the man of medicine he is today. One of his teachers eventually became his patient and they had a laugh about the past. His seventh-grade bully also came to him as a patient. Meeting him was one of his biggest lessons he learned while practicing medicine. He realized that the bully was traumatized from childhood and took it out in the only place that he could. You cannot compare traumas. [13:00] The Biggest Enemy in Healing Anxiety You cannot expect a book to heal your anxiety. It only provides you with the framework, the work is yours to do. The biggest enemy in healing anxiety is an overprotective ego. An overprotective ego doesn't let you go back and experience the same pain that you were used to. Unless you can go back and feel it, you can't bring it to the surface, a place where you can start changing. You cannot change them unless you use feeling to change them. [29:13] Changing Your Physiology in Combination with Mindset The biggest thing in changing one's physiology is breathing. As soon as you focus on your breath, it naturally slows down. The mind usually runs too quickly that the body has no choice but to breathe quickly, shrinking down your chest. When your chest shrinks, it sends a message to the brainstem that you are in trouble. Your breathing becomes very shallow. [39:05] Understanding the Root of Anxiety, "Body Alarms", and Healing A lot of people don't even think to look at their body because their mind is usually moving too fast to process anything. When you are anxious or alarmed, you must investigate your body and find the cause. A lot of people who are of senior age haven't even thought of looking at the anxiety in their bodies. The mind reflects how the body feels. If you have an alarm in your system that's been there due to past trauma, your mind is going to react to it repeatedly until it becomes its go-to. [1:02:39] Unconsciously Reliving Trauma through Mind Regression If you have chronic stress like a lot of people, especially those who had a traumatic or abusive past, your mind gets pushed back into the time when you experienced such things. There is a theory that states that if you experienced a significant trauma as a child, part of you stays locked at that certain age until it gets brought back up. Mirror work deals with this by reminding yourself that you are living in the present. AND MUCH MORE! Alix Strauss recently reissued The Joy of Funerals, 20 years after its initial release (with St. Martin's Press). This fascinated me, as so often I hear authors wonder, "Can I still promote my book? It's been out for a year!" In this episode of the Write the Damn Book Already podcast, we chatted about: what compelled her to reissue the book what she's doing differently this time around how being a frequent contributor to the NYT informs her confidence about being a "good" writer what she loves most about the writing community how she summons and nurtures unflinching belief in her book. I had to sit quite far from the mic for the majority of the interview so it didn't pick up my near-constant laughter; the woman is hysterical!ABOUT ALIXAlix Strauss is a trend, culture, and lifestyle journalist; an award-winning, four-time published author; speaker; and frequent contributor to The New York Times. The Business of Meetings

We are delighted to have an amazing individual as our guest for today! Brian Palmer, the former President of the International Association of Speakers Bureau is joining us!  Brian has had a vast amount of experience with booking speakers over the last forty years. He is with us today to talk about what he and his clients look for when recruiting speakers, to give some great advice about what you could do to convince him that you should be the next speaker he books, and share his experience after selling his company. We hope that you enjoy today's conversation!  Brian Palmer's bio Brian Palmer is the Senior Vice President of the National Speakers Bureau, a division of the Premiere Speakers Bureau of Nashville. Brian started to work with his father at NSB after finishing college in 1980. After spending 38 years there and having bought the company from his family, he decided on a new path and sold the firm. He continues to work for the firm, helping professionals to plan effective gatherings. Along the way, Brian has been involved in the meeting industry as President of the International Association of Speakers Bureaus, on MPI's International Board, and as President of Chicago's MPI chapter. In that time, Brian has also been given some industry awards. MPI presented him with their International Supplier of the Year Award, the National Speakers Association gave him their Meeting Partner of the Year Award, and the International Association of Speakers Bureaus presented him with the John Palmer award, named for his father. Brian and his wife of 30 years live in the suburbs of Chicago. Brian's father Brian's father was in the entertainment business as a bandleader. When he got tired of traveling, he started the National Speakers Bureau.  Getting into the business of speakers Brian was a freshman in high school when his father started NSB, and he used to work there, stuffing envelopes and licking stamps, in his spare time. He continued working there part-time throughout high school and college, and in 1980, he began working there full-time. Selecting speakers  Brian explains that there is no strict formula for how he goes about selecting the speakers he represents. He relies on his gut to a certain degree when he hears a speech that could be of interest to his customers and falls within the realm of the market he serves, which is mainly corporations and business-related associations.   What Brian Palmer looks for in the speakers he selects The way that speakers interact with Brian Palmer gives him an idea of how they might interact with their customers. He looks for people who deliver interesting talks and interact well with his customers and the audience. What happens before the speech is critical in the run-up to the presentation. If Brian does not think those things will be right, he will not be interested in booking that speaker. Politically-oriented speakers Currently, people are less apt to hire speakers to appear at events for fear of them offending their audience in some way. Some people are okay with hearing views divergent from their own. But there are often people at the extremes who do not want to consider any ideas they disagree with. So there are a lot fewer politically-oriented speeches booked in the business realm currently. You cannot please everyone Brian has found that no matter how good a speech is, there is always someone unhappy about it. Brian's secret to selecting the right kind of speakers The way that people react to Brian's suggestion of some small adjustment to their presentation is one of his secrets to selecting the right kind of speakers. If they are unwilling to consider feedback, he is a lot less interested in booking them.  Something Brian Palmer looks for in a speaker One of the things Brian Palmer looks for is the recognition that the most important person in the room is not the speaker but the audience. Well-refined presentations Although Brian does a bit of coaching, he prefers it when people's presentations and shows have been well-refined by the time they get to him. He is not interested in booking rookies because NSB is a large entity with a brand to uphold. He prefers to book people with experience and who are prepared for things that might not go right. Having your things in order When you contact a large speakers bureau in the US, you need to have things in order. Speakers should consider using resources to prepare themselves. The National Speakers Association has many educational seminars and products to help speakers understand how to put an offering together. People get anxious about spending a lot of money on speakers People get anxious about spending a lot of money on speakers because they want to be sure that the speaker will reflect well on them and their meeting. So, Brian advocates for people having a discipline for their selection process and their speaker preparation process, to make sure that the people they hire do what they want to get done. Staying in the industry Brian was interested in remaining in the events business and industry after he sold his business. He wanted to go about it differently, however. So his business coach suggested that he should find someone to work with, with a similar philosophy and business approach.  People in the lecture business Brian focused on people in the lecture business with whom he thought he would want to do business. He approached someone at Premiere Speakers Bureau who liked his idea, and things moved very fast from there. A lot of their negotiations had to do with the finer points and with what Brian's role was going to be. Brian found that the way the transaction worked was decidedly fair. A lawyer He hired a lawyer to help him with the business transaction, and he feels happy with the way things have worked out. Business advice from Brian Palmer Brian Palmer's advice is for you to do business with somebody you would want to spend some time with, not someone you would want to run away from.
