Huw Turbervill, editor of "The Cricketer" magazine, has some interesting views following England's defeat in the Third Test at Rawalpindi - is it time to find a "drop anchor" batter in the mould of Alastair Cook, Mike Atherton or Geoff Boycott, who can bat time? The current top seven may be entertaining, but results are everything and the team needs to demonstrate more responsibility for poor performances. Winning quickly or losing quickly, just so they can squeeze in a quick nine on the nearest golf course needs to change!

TRIVIA ANSWERSThe only bowlers in Test cricket with a better strike rate than Mitch Starc's 48.62 are:Dale Steyn (42.38), Malcolm Marshall (46.76) and … Waqar Younis (43.49)! In terms of players playing their 100th Tests together, it's far more common than we assumed! Mike Atherton and Alex Stewart did so in 2000, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis and Stephen Fleming did in the same match in 2006, and Michael Clarke and Alastair Cook also reached 100 in the Perth Test of 2013-14! Today's episode was prompted by a question posed by author, journalist and regular listener Mike Jakeman: How do you market test cricket successfully?"The national cricket boards have figured out that the big money comes from success in the shorter formats. And certainly in England, their focus has been on building success in one day in 2020. It's been very successful. England obviously won the 2019 ICC World Cup and they reached the final of the T20 World Cup late last year. But test cricket, it's fun too. And it delivers slow burn, sporting excellence in ways that limited overs cricket just can't replicate. So how do we sell test cricket to broadcasters, sponsors and even the cricket boards themselves?"To answer Mike's question we recruited Omar Chaudhuri and Tony Singh. Tony Singh is the chief commercial officer of the England and Wales cricket board, leading the teams responsible for all ECB fan engagement and revenue generating activity across England cricket, The Hundred, recreational and professional games. Omar Chaudhuri  is chief intelligence officer at Twenty First Group, which advises sports bodies, such as the Premier League, European Tour, USGA and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. This conversation builds on other cricket related podcasts.Omar is a former guest on the podcast where we talked about jeopardy and the use of data to inform sporting formats - UP181 The Business of Jeopardy. Also mentioned in the podcast is the excellent Sky Sports Ashes Vodcast, featuring Ian Ward, Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain and Rob Key.Our conversation with ECB CEO Tom Harrison is referenced, from May 2021. My name is Andrew O'Meally airline pilo,t alcoholic, and your host talking to you from the Sunshine Coast or the 'Sunny Coast' as us locals call it here in Queensland, Australia. It's certainly nice to be here at the moment as we approach the tail end of summer. And if you're into the outdoors, especially surfing, this is a great place to be. And speaking of surfing, my guest today is Dr. Mike Atherton. Now besides being a keen surfer, Mike is a psychiatrist, addiction specialist and has been awarded a fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine a FAChAM. Mike has also spent time in the U S gaining a qualifications as a HIMS, Federal Aviation Administration, certified addiction specialist. And he's one of the only ones in this part of the world with that qualification. He's one of the founding members of HIMS in Australia.Andrew (00:02:20):And when he's not practicing as a psychiatrist, you might find it hard, pressed finding him as he often travels to secret places all over the globe, looking for that perfect wave. He's involvement in the aviation industry as a psychiatrist has contributed to many Australian pilots getting back in the air and living a better life.New Speaker (00:02:43):Hey Mike, thanks for taking time to talk with us here today. It's really good to, to have you here. Now. I understand that you may not know that I know this, but you're a pretty good guitar player and you're a keen gardener. The thing that particularly caught my attention is that you're a bit of an adventurer. So you've been up to New Guinea surfing in remote areas there. And in fact, I remember once, we couldn't catch up, I think it was for Birds meeting because you damaged your knee while you were surfing. What happened there?Mike (00:03:20):Yeah. I, uh, tore my cartilage on the second day of surfing in Vanimo in Northern Papua New Guinea up near the Indonesian border. And, yeah, that was, a bit lucky I was, still able to surf although it got worse and worse through the week. There was a part of me thought maybe I should have stopped and fly home, but, you know, when you only get away every year or so then, I just sort of carried on and took it easy and it sort of held up for the week. And, eventually I had to have surgery on it, and its back okay now, but yeah, one of the guys fractured a couple of vertabrae when we were out there he got airlifted out, so that wasn't particularly good, but, yeah, it was pretty rudimentary, medical services up there.Andrew (00:04:16):Right. Okay. Yeah. Well, what were you doing up there?Mike (00:04:21):Ah, just surfing, we, we have a group of doctors that we go away with intermittently we, that I was surfing and then every afternoon a group of the doctors would go into the town of Vanimo, and meet up with the local medical service and, provide some support services, education, procedures, policy sort of stuff.Andrew (00:04:49):All right. And is that something you do regularly? It's a voluntary thing i take it.Mike (00:04:55):That side of things it's voluntary. I mean, its sort of mixing the wonderful and the beautiful with a bit of kind of education and stuff. So they, the group I work with set, a number of different kind of facilities, one in Nias in Indonesia. And there's hope to establish this one in Vanimo where we provide, I suppose, again, education and restocking and kind of a bare emergency sort of equipment emergency room, providing them defibrillators, that sort of thing. We run a small conference, you know, educational conference type thing, and as part of the process. And, there is, you know, as an aside, which runs the, which then, through the proceeds of the conference, everything, we then provide sort of some of these medical equipment and expertise to these small remote, I suppose, communities at one end. And the one in the Maldives is extremely well-established Nias is pretty well established. And there's a few groups, so you can do a three month or six months or shorter. kind of stint on the Island, if you wish to provide medical services and, got some great waves out in the front as well.Andrew (00:06:17):I was just going to say depends on what the surf would be like, how long you stayed there!Mike (00:06:22):Absolutely. Yeah. So, yeah, that's pretty good stuff that goes on, yeah.Andrew (00:06:26):Yeah, that's great. So you've always been interested in becoming a psychiatrist, or what drove you towards that specialty?Mike (00:06:37):Oh, no, I mean, I started medicine, I wasn't ready. I came into medicine quite late in my decision making. I sort of decided relatively late that it was a good, seemed like a good career opportunity. And then I was a bit disillusioned during medical training. Eventually came out and was doing emergency work, emergency training. And then, in order to do that, I had to do either medical surgical or anesthetics, but that was really not very enjoyable when I started to train and I ended up in a psychiatric job as part of a GP training program, but I just absolutely loved the psychiatry rotation I did, and so I just stayed on in psychiatry, worked in the UK, in London for a few years. And then, a friend offered me a job, or told me about a job, in Sydney. And, at that time, my sort of life circumstances were ideally suited, to sort of, traveling over. And so came over to Sydney and, very soon kind of met my future wife and, then stayed here in Sydney, training, I had to go back to the UK to finish off some of the training there. Yeah, basically established myself in Sydney as a psychiatrist and, yeah, I loved every minute of it.Andrew (00:08:10):Yeah. Great. So you spend most of your time practicing out of the Sydney Clinic at Bronte.Mike (00:08:18):Yeah, that's...

In the pomp of his playing days, Ted Dexter filled cricket grounds with spectators. The former Sussex and England captain returns to the crease as the latest guest of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their regular cricket-themed podcast.  This also includes an appeal from Mike Atherton for the MCC Foundation. For the week from 1 December donations will be doubled in value, and will help to give cricketing experience and access to coaching for disadvantaged boys and girls.  See https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/campaign/a051r00001eojcBAAQ    Ted has generously donated to the Foundation the royalties from his autobiography 85 Not Out recently published by Quiller. Ted recalls one of his most electrifying innings, 70 in the Lord's Test against the 1963 West Indians, which ended with all four results possible on the last ball, Colin Cowdrey with a broken arm at the non-striker's end. (He pays tribute to the cool David Allen, who actually received the bowling of Wes Hall.) He was given lbw to Sobers, bowling left-arm over: “with DRS I would have reviewed it.”Modestly (and wrongly) he denies that he had an aura as a player, but he always set out to the batting crease as if he meant business. Of modern players, he thinks that Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes and Steve Smith inspire awe in their opponents. Bradman in retirement had huge authority, and once silenced him in a memorable encounter. So far the only Test cricketer to have been born in Milan, Ted speaks of his early life in Italy and then following his father on war service to distant parts of the UK. He pays warm tribute to his father's support in his career, not least his response to a lordly President of the MCC who had criticized him as captain of the 1962-63 tour of Australia. The peer was a cactus aficionado, and Mr Dexter senior made a graphic suggestion of where his lordship might place a cactus. He discusses his relationship with the Duke of Norfolk, the unexpected manager of that tour. The Duke had once given him tickets to Ascot, and he tells how he hurried to complete victory on the fourth day of a Test against Pakistan so that he could use them on the fifth. He reveals how he himself acquired his unwanted nickname of Lord Ted as a schoolboy at Radley (a story worthy of P G Wodehouse's hero Psmith.) He looks back at his cricket career at Cambridge University (which owed much to his father and older brother) and as an amateur at Sussex. In his first year in the side, he sent a belated telegram pulling out of a Championship match to pursue a romance in Denmark – a story from a lost world of cricket. That romance came to naught but not long after he courted (to the background of Frank Sinatra's Songs For Swinging Lovers) the beautiful model who became his wife of over sixty years. He and she became the most glamorous figures in world cricket and he speaks revealingly about the condition of professional sportsmen's lives in the new cultural and social era of the Sixties. As captain of Sussex (despite the romantic AWOL incident), he tells how he won them their first silverware (the initial two Gillette Cups) through his understanding of containment by accurate seam bowling. Although blamed for the long exile of spin bowlers from one-day cricket, he rejoices in the present paramountcy of leg-spinners in T20. He pays a warm tribute to his Sussex partner Jim Parks, a natural athlete. He is proud of his influence (with the aid of chairs) over John Snow's development as a world-class bowler. And more...

We head West, where aesthetics may have killed Handscomb, we pay tribute to speed as is custom, we talk Duckett, Magic Bullet Theory and ponder whether the home team circuit too little, there’s Beta dismissals and the Windies, Adam Collins joins with facts and knowledge, #AskTGC continues and – in the greatest and least deserved coup in podcast history – we steal 19 minutes of Michael Atherton’s time. Mike Atherton This is not your usual UX talk. It’s a little about information architecture, a bit about content strategy, but mostly it’s about how we can use information floating around the web to build content-rich products, and how we should try harder to weave our work into the fabric of the network. Linked Open Data lets us expose, share, and connect knowledge. A single, extensible network of information stretching across an increasingly semantic web, making our products more findable, and our content more reusable. It’s happening now. Used by the BBC to build their Music pages, the New York Times to build topic pages, and by Google and Facebook to build their knowledge graphs. Where once we linked up pages, now we need to link up the underlying information and tell connected stories with the whole web.
