Scholarly discussions on Islam in print have focused predominantly on the role of Urdu in the development of North Indian Muslim publics (Dubrow, 2018; Robb, 2020), ʿulama and Islamic jurisprudence (Tareen, 2020) and relations between Islam and colonial modernity (Robinson, 2008; Osella & Osella, 2008). This special issue of International Journal of Islam in Asia (Sept, 2023) instead offers fine-grained investigations on technology and labour; print landscapes, networks and actors; subaltern languages; and popular Islam. We critique the idea of an “epistemic rupture” brought about by colonial modernity, providing a more systematic analysis of continuities and changes in Islamic knowledge economy. Examining two centuries of print authored by South Asian Muslims, the articles in the issue provide new ways of thinking about questions of knowledge production, distribution, circulation and reception. The issue broadens the scope of earlier scholarship, examining genres such as cosmology, divination, devotional poems, salacious songs, romances and tales of war in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, dobhāṣī do Bangla, Arabic Malayalam, Sindhi, Balochi and Brahui. The articles show the different ways that pre-colonial practices and cultures of writing and reading persisted in the print landscape, in terms of copying, adaptation, translation and circulation of texts. They inquire into new technologies, labour and networks that evolved, and how it provided fertile ground for both new and traditional forms of religious activities and authorities. The articles present new Muslim publics, geographies, and imaginaries forged through the vernacularisation of Islam, and their relationship to the transnational or global community. Nur Sobers-Khan is a researcher and curator of Islamic manuscripts, art and archival collections. She served as director of the Aga Khan Documentation Center, a research centre and archive for the study of visual culture, architecture and urbanism in Muslim societies (2021-22). But a closer inspection shows a handsome carved wooden cricket frieze at the base. Welsh cricket gets off to a noisy, swearing start in Swansea on a Sunday in 1771. Local landowners, railways, the British army and industry all help the game to spread. After success as a Minor county, Glamorgan are the first Welsh team into the County Championship in 1921. They struggle but are revived by inspiring leadership from Maurice Turnbull, who meets a hero's death in the Second World War. Under another inspiring leader, Wilf Wooller, they win their first Championship in 1948 – celebrated by the ex-Glamorgan umpire who gives them an lbw decision to clinch victory. To take the story forward is the historian and curator of the Museum of Welsh Cricket, Andrew Hignell, in a second innings as guest of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their latest cricket-themed podcast.Read the full description here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-46-wilf-wooller-the-man-at-so-many-great-moments-of-welsh-cricket/The literary event of the year is imminent: the publication of Wisden Cricketers Almanack.  Peter and Richard invite listeners to submit their nominations for the Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year to obornehellercricket@outlook.com. The 1976 NBA Finals featured a mediocre team in the Phoenix Suns and the historic Boston Celtics. Boston, including the previous season and the first two games of these NBA Finals had won 8-straight against Phoenix. The Suns, who had gone 42-40 during the 1975-76 regular season, got on a roll. First, they downed the Seattle Supersonics 4 games to 2 and then they took out the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors in seven games to advance to their first Finals. Boston, meanwhile, had gone 54-28 during the regular season, defeated the Buffalo Braves in six games and the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals to setup this unlikely Finals showdown. Boston, coached by Tom Heinsohn and led by greats John Havlicek and Don Nelson, also had a terrific bench and budding star in Jojo White. The Suns were led by Paul Westphal (who was a part-time player for the Celtics the previous season), rookie Alvan Adams and the little-known Ricky Sobers. On this episode of Sports’ Forgotten Heroes, author Roger Gordon returns to the podcast. Gordon, who recently released a book about Game 5 of the 1976 Finals titled, “6.4.76 Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics,” a game widely regarded as the greatest game of all-time, discusses the game and the unique controversies ( and they were unique, questionable, and looking back on it, crazy to think they could happen today) that helped make the game as legendary as it is. Additionally, we talk about six stars - and their careers - who played such pivotal roles in the game: Westphal, Adams, Sobers, White, Paul Silas and Dave Cowens. In the pomp of his playing days, Ted Dexter filled cricket grounds with spectators. The former Sussex and England captain returns to the crease as the latest guest of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their regular cricket-themed podcast.  This also includes an appeal from Mike Atherton for the MCC Foundation. For the week from 1 December donations will be doubled in value, and will help to give cricketing experience and access to coaching for disadvantaged boys and girls.  See https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/campaign/a051r00001eojcBAAQ    Ted has generously donated to the Foundation the royalties from his autobiography 85 Not Out recently published by Quiller. Ted recalls one of his most electrifying innings, 70 in the Lord's Test against the 1963 West Indians, which ended with all four results possible on the last ball, Colin Cowdrey with a broken arm at the non-striker's end. (He pays tribute to the cool David Allen, who actually received the bowling of Wes Hall.) He was given lbw to Sobers, bowling left-arm over: “with DRS I would have reviewed it.”Modestly (and wrongly) he denies that he had an aura as a player, but he always set out to the batting crease as if he meant business. Of modern players, he thinks that Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes and Steve Smith inspire awe in their opponents. Bradman in retirement had huge authority, and once silenced him in a memorable encounter. So far the only Test cricketer to have been born in Milan, Ted speaks of his early life in Italy and then following his father on war service to distant parts of the UK. He pays warm tribute to his father's support in his career, not least his response to a lordly President of the MCC who had criticized him as captain of the 1962-63 tour of Australia. The peer was a cactus aficionado, and Mr Dexter senior made a graphic suggestion of where his lordship might place a cactus. He discusses his relationship with the Duke of Norfolk, the unexpected manager of that tour. The Duke had once given him tickets to Ascot, and he tells how he hurried to complete victory on the fourth day of a Test against Pakistan so that he could use them on the fifth. He reveals how he himself acquired his unwanted nickname of Lord Ted as a schoolboy at Radley (a story worthy of P G Wodehouse's hero Psmith.) He looks back at his cricket career at Cambridge University (which owed much to his father and older brother) and as an amateur at Sussex. In his first year in the side, he sent a belated telegram pulling out of a Championship match to pursue a romance in Denmark – a story from a lost world of cricket. That romance came to naught but not long after he courted (to the background of Frank Sinatra's Songs For Swinging Lovers) the beautiful model who became his wife of over sixty years. He and she became the most glamorous figures in world cricket and he speaks revealingly about the condition of professional sportsmen's lives in the new cultural and social era of the Sixties. As captain of Sussex (despite the romantic AWOL incident), he tells how he won them their first silverware (the initial two Gillette Cups) through his understanding of containment by accurate seam bowling. Although blamed for the long exile of spin bowlers from one-day cricket, he rejoices in the present paramountcy of leg-spinners in T20. He pays a warm tribute to his Sussex partner Jim Parks, a natural athlete. He is proud of his influence (with the aid of chairs) over John Snow's development as a world-class bowler. And more...

Asked to supply us with a finance Strategic moment, CFO Sean Sobers recalls an acquisition completed during an earlier chapter of his career. Convinced the the acquired company was only capable of yielding a meager profit, Sobers and the finance team set out to expose the company’s shortcomings only to discover the opposite. “It was probably the most profitable business unit we had,” explains Sobers, who says the discovery came as part of a broader effort on the part of finance to require management to apply R.O.I. measures to their investments across the company. Meanwhile, certain opportunities that had garnered steady investment over the years would lose their luster as finance fine tuned its R.O.I. lens and began tracking returns more closely. “As we went forward, if you were going to ask for funding you had to supply an R.O.I. measurement that was approved by finance,” explains Sobers, who says the R.O.I. performance of investments would be tracked annually and frequently quarterly. The Cricket Badger, James Buttler, is joined by the world's greatest living cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers on this week's Podcast, but as you will hear the interview was mixed in its success.  In fairness Sir Garry had been conducting interviews for two hours but a quest for him to answer the Cricket Badger 20 questions was given short shrift and a 20 minute interview turned into 13 of which only six makes the cut. But the six is good! It is after all a number he is synonymous with. The Barbados cricket legends are touring to support Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., promoting travel to Barbados to enjoy its rich cricket heritage which includes the famous Kensington Oval which hosts many local and major international tournaments, The Cricket Legends of Barbados Museum and Sir Garfield Sobers’ International Schools Cricket Tournament in Barbados in July. For more information please visit: www.visitbarbados.org (http://www.visitbarbados.org/) .  The disappointment with Mr Sobers approach should not diminish the Cricket Badger's support for anything to do with the wonderful island of Barbados. So, when pundits of the game sit down and choose an all-time great World XI, there is a plethora of talent to choose from. Since Test cricket began in 1877, there have been a number of great batsmen, bowlers, all-rounders and wicket-keepers to choose from. Therefore, it is only natural that the pundits who choose the all-time great Test XI will differ in their choice of the playing XI. However, there are some players whose exploits on a cricketing field are so compelling, that leaving them out of the playing XI is impossible. They include players like Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Shane Warne and Wasim Akram. Listen on...

Earlier this year, The International Association of Athletics Federations announced a new ruling that from November 2018 onwards, female athletes with naturally high testosterone levels who wanted to continue competing in female events (400m to the mile events) would have to take medication to reduce the hormone in their bodies - or race against men. Olympic and World 800m champion Caster Semenya is set to contest these rules at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This week Sportshour talks to a number of experts to discuss the social, legal and medical implications of these new rules and whether we’ll ever see Semenya run the same again. Last year, rising star of British Motorsport Billy Monger suffered a high-speed crash while racing in Formula 4 resulted in a double leg amputation........while in 2001, former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi lost both of his legs in a crash in Germany. Billy travelled to Rome to meet Alex as part of a special programme for the BBC. This week, 100 and 200 metre World Record holder Usian Bolt made his debut for the Australian side Central Coast Mariners. Before he headed down under, the Olympic Champion had a trial with Norwegian club Stromgodset. Assistant coach Martin Foyston talks about Bolt’s football ambitions and why they decided to let the Jamaican leave. 50 years ago this week, Garfield Sobers achieved one of cricket's greatest feats. The legendary West Indian all-rounder, became the first player to hit six sixes in an over in a first-class match. Sobers was playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in the English County Championship. Malcolm Nash was the bowler and he's been reflecting on the SIX minutes of his life for which he'll always be remembered. We often see or hear professional athletes venturing into the world of sports broadcasting when their careers come to an end. But its rare that professional broadcasters take up sport at the highest level - So meet Annimari Korte a sports journalist from Finland who has just competed at the European Athletics Championships.

It was so common in the movies of the 40s and 50s for someone to be served coffee to sober them up fast that we all as a society believed it to be true. Get drunk. Drink Coffee. Drive home. Not cool. The only thing that sobers you up is time. Time for your liver to process the alcohol in your blood, to degrade it and remove if from your circulation so that you can think clearly and react quickly once again. Coffee, on the other hand, is full of caffeine which is a stimulant. IT makes you feel more alert, but in fact you're still drink with all that comes along with that; bad decision making, slow response time, and perhaps dancing around wth a lamp shade on your head. The trouble is you're more alert so you think you can do anything, like drive home. So actually, coffee and drinking is a bad combination. If someone you know is drunk and wants to drive, stop them. Don't give them coffee. Give them a large glass of water, to help with alcohol's dehydrating nature, a couple of aspirin and let them sleep it off on your couch.

The Plazes screencasts I’m recording the audio for demanded a better quality microphone than the $15 mic from Radio Shack I bought last summer. So I went out to Sobers Music this morning and invested in an APEX435 microphone, a tiny Behringer mixing board and assorted cables. The result is much better audio. At least once I figured out which way to point the microphone. I celebrated the occasion by recording the XLR episode of The 3LA Podcast, wherein I explore the origins of the “XLR connector” that’s at the end of my new mic. The guys at Sobers, by the way, were super-helpful. They knew exactly what I needed, and I was in and out in 20 minutes.
