Welcome to Season 2, Episode 1 of the Z3 Podcast! In this conversation, Z3 Founding Director Amitai Fraiman speaks with Rabbi Dr. Laura Novak-Winer and Robbie Gringras about the evolving landscape of Israel education, particularly in the wake of the events of October 7, 2023. Each of them discusses the goals of Israel education, emphasizing the importance of knowing Israel in a nuanced way rather than simply fostering love for the country. Their conversation delves into the historical context of Israel education, the challenges faced by American Jews in connecting with Israel, and the need for a deeper understanding of values and relationships within the Jewish community. In the latter half of the podcast, the speakers reflect on their personal theological journeys and the implications for future education. Together, they explore the complexities of Jewish identity, the impact of recent events on perceptions of Israel, and the role of education versus advocacy in shaping these discussions. Ultimately, they call on the importance of community and nuanced, continuing conversations as our communities continue to educate and define what it means to be Jewish in relation to Israel. About our Guests: Robbie Gringras was born and bred in the Jewish community of Britain, but has been living and creating in Israel since 1996, primarily with Jewish Americans. As such his work – educational and theatrical – bridges the Israel-Diaspora connection with empathy and insight. While Creative Director of Makom, the Israel Education Lab of the Jewish Agency, he coined the phrase: “Hugging and Wrestling with Israel”, drove the 4HQ System of Israel Education, and wrote for and ran the Makom website. As a world-renowned solo theatre performer, he is also an inspirational speaker, and a charismatic teacher. As a prolific playwright, he is also a challenging and original educator. As an experienced and committed Jewish Zionist educator, his theater creations are educational treasure chests.Rabbi Dr. Laura Novak Winer, RJE, is the Director of the Master of Educational Leadership program at the HUC-JIR Rhea Hirsch School of Education in Los Angeles, CA. Laura has worked in and with a variety of afternoon school settings and her current research focus is Israel education, particularly within the context of the supplementary school.Laura has been published in a variety of academic and online journals, is a regular contributor to Moment Magazine's “Ask the Rabbis” column, and was the editor of several curricula, including Sacred Choices: Adolescent Relationships and Sexual Ethics (2005 and 2007).Chapters00:00 Introduction to Israel Education01:56 The Goals of Israel Education12:55 Evolution of Israel Education24:13 Values and Relationships in Israel Education30:38 Theological Perspectives on Israel Education34:41 The Importance of Community in Jewish Identity41:19 Navigating the Impact of October 7th50:23 The Role of Education vs. Advocacy01:00:02 Defining Jewish Identity and Zionism

In this episode, Barbara talks to Carlin Romano, a renowned critic and champion of intellectual discourse. Romano, a former critic-at-large for the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Philadelphia Inquirer and current critic-at-large for Moment Magazine, offers his sharp insights on the decline of critical thinking in book reviews and the state of literary criticism in America. He laments the shift towards praise and publicity, arguing for the importance of tough critique. But Romano's intellectual journey extends far beyond literature. He passionately defends his provocative thesis: America, with its diverse perspectives, free expression, and abundance of philosophical resources, boasts the most philosophical culture in history. He even explores the power of provocative statements in igniting philosophical debates. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Romano discusses his controversial departure from the National Book Critics Circle. He clarifies his stance on the organization's anti-racism statement, dispelling misconceptions about his opposition to certain aspects. Romano also raises concerns about the lack of diverse thought and the growing influence of left-leaning politics within the NBCC. Beyond the world of criticism, Romano reflects on the changing landscape of college campuses, grappling with the challenges of fostering free speech and civil discourse in an increasingly polarized environment. The episode concludes with a glimpse into Romano's personal reading life, a fitting end to a conversation that celebrates intellectual curiosity and the power of ideas. Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) is best known as the author of Night, survivor of Auschwitz and a powerful, enduring voice of the Holocaust. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he was a hero of human rights, professor and author of more than 50 books. Among his accomplishments, Wiesel co-founded Moment Magazine with Leonard Fein in 1975 to be a place of conversation for America’s Jews. For editor-in-chief Nadine Epstein, he became a mentor and friend after she took over the magazine in 2004. In this striking volume (https://www.amazon.com/Elie-Wiesel-Extraordinary-Life-Legacy/dp/1942134576/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3L2E7TU5HPM9H&keywords=elie+wiesel+an+extraordinary+life+and+legacy&qid=1561563097&s=gateway&sprefix=extraordinary+elie%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-1), Epstein shares her memories of Wiesel and brings together 36 interviews with friends, colleagues and others who knew him – including, his son Elisha, Michael Berenbaum, Wolf Blitzer, Father Patrick Debois, Ronald S. Lauder, Bernard Henri-Levi, Kati Marton, Natan Sharansky, Ben Kingsley, and Oprah Winfrey. The foreword is by British Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and the afterword is by broadcaster Ted Koppel. To celebrate this humanitarian and keep his inspiration alive, Epstein presents readers with a visual history of Wiesel’s life and examines the influence of Night. This chilling story of the Holocaust has already gripped the souls of millions of readers. Epstein includes a selection of his speeches and writings, lively conversations with teenagers about Night and discussion questions. The book features more than 100 photos. Says Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: "This book of reflections is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Elie Wiesel. In its pages and through the words of its contributors, you will feel a promise, not just to the souls who perished, but also to Elie and all those who survived Europe’s darkest night." E029 - What is Beshert? The Origin of “Soulmate”

Love via HaShem

In order to present a nice introduction to this word, I’ve employed the help of some friends: Moment Magazine’s article called Jewish Word | Beshert BY SALA LEVIN August 30, 2013 - Enjoy! A Talmudic Date with Destiny Stroll Manhattan’s Upper West Side on a Saturday night and you’ll find yourself surrounded on all sides by prospective couples trying each other out. The last few years have seen an explosion in the neighborhood’s popularity among Jews in their twenties and thirties. For New York’s young Jewish singles, destiny—or beshert—has an address, and it’s west of Central Park. The term beshert is most often used to mean a soulmate: the one person whom an individual is divinely destined to marry… Though the term beshert can refer to any fortuitous event (“I missed the bus, but it must have been beshert, because I heard it broke down”), it’s most often used to mean a soulmate: the one person whom an individual is divinely destined to marry. The etymology of the Yiddish word—spelled, generally, either bashert or beshert—is something of a mystery. Some argue that the word comes from the German beschert, meaning bestowed or given. (Bescherung, a version of the word, is used to describe the exchange of gifts on Christmas.) Others say that it’s from the Yiddish word sher, meaning scissors or shears, the idea being that beshert is something that has been shaped in a specific way, as if cut out by a pair of unseen scissors. The concept of a soulmate is nothing new, or uniquely Jewish. In The Symposium, Plato has Aristophanes present the idea that humans originally had four arms, four legs and one head made of two faces; Zeus split these creatures in half, leaving each torn creature to search for its missing counterpart. The widely used kismet—a Turkish derivation of the Arabic word qisma, meaning lot or portion—originated as the version of fate in the Arab world. The Jewish theory of soulmates has its roots in that most romantic of canonical texts: the Talmud. The sage Rav stipulates that “40 days before the formation of a child, a heavenly voice issues forth and proclaims, the daughter of this person is for that person; the house of this person is for that person; the field of this person is for that person.” This declaration is considered the origin of the idea of the soulmate in Judaism, although it is also discussed elsewhere, including Kabbalah, which teaches that husband and wife are plag nishamasa, or “half-souls.” The 13th-century scholar, ... Join Dr. Angela and Dr. Stephanie for this fascinating conversation with Dr. Stephanie Wellen Levine as they discuss her upcoming book which details her "lifelong quest for insight into what might happen to our amazing selves and consciousnesses after we die." Dr. Levine chronicles her early exposure to the reality of death, and the ways in which her obsession with this fact has shaped much of her life. She has spent much of her waking (and dreaming) hours contemplating the possibility of life after death. Her fear has driven her to explore various spiritual paths in search of evidence that her individual self might continue to exist in some way after the end of her corporeal existence. Dr. Levine's journey leads to some unique places; studying with a Christian Evangelical college group, visiting a town populated with mediums and psychics, and giving a convent a test-run. Dr. Levine has sought to communicate with the deceased; she has tried astral projection; she has left no spiritual fringe stone unturned--all in her attempts to gather sufficient evidence to quell her terror. While Dr. Levine's existential fear is palpable at times, she also presents her quest with a dry wit, and self-deprecating humor. She evaluates her experiences with a keen, critical mind.  Thank you Dr. Levine for sharing your personal journey with us today. You can read more of Dr. Levine's work at The Wisdom Daily and Hevria. She has also written a popular book Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers: An Intimate Journey among Hasidic Girls, which won Moment Magazine’s Emerging Writer Award for Nonfiction and was chosen for the national Hadassah Book Club.   If you are interested in being notified of the release of Dr. Levine's new book, which was discussed today, please subscribe to the Chasing the Mind blog. We will update listeners when her book is available.  Thank you for listening to Chasing the Mind. You can subscribe on Itunes and Stitcher.
