Matt Pinfield would probably consider himself "just a music fan from New Jersey". But fans of his radio and club shows, as well as music artists like David Bowie and Depeche Mode immediately recognized the passion and knowledge that Matt possessed. This led to the distinction of being THE spokesperson for rock music fans when he first began hosting the Alternative Music show 120 Minutes on MTV in 1995. It's all documented in his memoir, All These Things That I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life. We're lucky to have Matt on the podcast to discuss his life, as well as the Top Ten songs from the 1987 KROQ year-end playlist. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Send us a Text Message.Did you know a single night of disco destruction could change baseball history forever? This episode kicks off with the infamous Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park in 1979, where a promotional stunt spiraled into an unprecedented riot. We recount the electrifying atmosphere that led up to nearly 7,000 fans storming the field and the aftermath that forced the White Sox to forfeit their game. Along the way, we examine the polarizing nature of disco music, its cultural ramifications, and spotlight the transformation of music during this chaotic period.Ever wondered what happens when the music industry is rocked by scandal? We delve into Milli Vanilli's catastrophic lip-syncing revelation on the Club MTV tour. Discover the fallout from their exposed deception, including the dramatic loss of their Grammy awards and the broader implications for the music scene. We'll also touch on other notorious industry fabrications, such as Vanilla Ice's faux gangster image. To wrap things up, we take a nostalgic trip with rock legends, featuring The Beatles, the Psychedelic Furs, Loverboy, and Sammy Hagar. Alessandro Stradella's star burned brightly but briefly. His music was glorious; his lifestyle was dissolute: embezzlement, sexual imprudence and political intrigue - Stradella fell foul of his misdemeanours in 1682 when he was murdered by a hitman at the age of just 38. Hannah French is joined in the studio by the University of Birmingham's Professor Andrew Kirkman, who conducted a recent performance of Stradella's opera "La forza dell'amor paterno" with Barber Opera. Together they'll explore Stradella's colourful life and wonderful music, including extracts from the Birmingham performance, alongside recordings of Stradella's other operas, oratorios and orchestral works.Programme also includes your weekly bulletin of Early Music News, with Mark Seow.

Time to smash our heads on the punk rock! In our final episode of Music Mayhem, The Wheel of Mayhem deemed Christian punk's "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead worthy of closing out this year's series. Rounding out our completely unplanned series-within-a-series about the Christian recording industry, Blenderhead couldn't be further away from what dc Talk and Jars of Clay represented. Raw, uncompromising, visceral...LOUD. Blenderhead was a hardcore Christian punk band from the legendary underground label Tooth and Nail Records. Father Chuck grew up with this album, but JP didn't even know who Blenderhead was until he put it on the wheel. Press play, and get ready to experience "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead. This week, JP and Father Chuck visit another seismic album in the 90s Contemporary Christian scene: Jars of Clay's self-titled debut album. Jars of Clay was drastically different from dc Talk in their style and approach to lyrics, embracing metaphorical lyrics and acoustic guitars, as well as a more independent sound. Do any of the songs still hold up? You might be surprised! Check out the episode today, and listen to the Masters of Divinity dive deep into JARS OF CLAY. Music Mayhem keeps going because Music Mayhem can't be stopped! For some reason JP and Father Chuck decided to (dc) Talk about JESUS FREAK, the seismic Christian rock album that hit the charts and even managed to get some MTV airtime, something that's very important to Christian labels. Father Chuck has a fondness for the album, and JP has never listened to the album until recently. Does it still hold up? Find out! Music Mayhem will never end! It just keeps going! I'm serious, we can't stop it, and we don't know how. How do you stop Music Mayhem. Please help us. Music is the soundtrack of our everyday lives. Tune in to find out how music shape the lives of Queen3 & King. What songs we fell in love to, what songs we made love to, what songs that healed us, what songs that get us krunk...and much more.
Music Mayhem keeps on truckin', and this week we're truckin' to hell -- or heaven. Whichever you prefer, I guess. In 1979 Ozzy Osbourne was ousted from the legendary metal band Black Sabbath, and left a void that seemed impossible to fill. Enter one Ronnie James Dio, or as you and I know him: DIO. What should have been a recipe for disaster ended up being a massive success. The album was a hit, and featured one of the greatest metal tunes of all time, "Heaven and Hell." Dio also went on to be a major influence in the realm of heavy metal, inspiring countless bands and performers. This week, we dive deep into the 1980 album, which also happens to be Music Mayhem's first metal album! Press play, throw up the horns, and LOOK OUT! This album is loaded with bangers, from the iconic 80s bop "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to the all-timer ballad, "Time After Time," this is the album that cemented Cyndi Lauper as an 80s icon, and would influence pop music and female vocalists for years to come. Well, we've reached the end of MODAKU. Don't look so sad, you knew this was a test run baby, we wish we could go all out like we do with Music Mayhem, but that all depends on you! Let us know if you enjoyed MODAKU, and if we should tackle it against next year. But let's not get ahead of ourselves! We've got one more episode, and this week's it's Matt's turn to bring the anime goodness with WITCH HUNTER ROBIN. There were a ton of shows in the early 2000's that had a similar premise to ROBIN, but there are some elements that make this show unique. Did it work for the Masters of Divinity? Also, we get a little excited for the month of October, so bare with us as we have a small debate about SPOOKY SEASON. That play button isn't gonna press itself, kid!
One of the goals of our podcast is to explore, observe, comment, and sometimes satirize the various spaces within the vast universe of fandom. Four years after the creation of the podcast, we finally feel that we have the strength and capacity to explore the wild world of anime. Even though anime has been a staple in Japanese culture for decades, in the United States it started as an underground, cultish fandom that only recently sprung into the American mainstream, along with various other fandoms. Each week one of the Masters of Divinity will choose an anime title to watch, then reconvene and discuss said title in great length and detail. It's like Music Mayhem, but with schoolgirl uniforms and giant swords. This week's episode, however, serves as a primer, as JP, Father Chuck, and Matt discuss their thoughts and feelings on anime, as well as their experience with the medium. Press play to hear their thoughts, and wait until the end to hear what the first anime Masters of Divinity dedicates an entire episode to!

On Episode 23, I'm joined by Andrew Wendowski of Music Mayhem Magazine to talk about "Life Changes" from Good Charlotte's 2016 sixth studio album Youth Authority. Andrew talks about photographing GC on their comeback shows in the Northeast post-hiatus, plus how he balances freelance and touring work with running Music Mayhem. We also talk about the 2016 APMAs and how we've had to pivot as life has thrown changes at us. Like what you hear? Subscribe to the show on iTunes, leave a review, and share it with a friend! Well, here we are, at the end of all things -- not really, just Music Mayhem. We're sad to see it go, as Father Chuck, JP, Matt, and Father Fun have had a blast, as usual, surprising each other with albums and challenging our tastes and just enjoying some great music. You should all know by now how the Wheel of Mayhem works. We each select one "good" album and one "bad" album, we put them on a wheel, and fate decides what the last episode of Music Mayhem will be about. We'd like to thank Father Fun for joining us on another odyssey through music, and fortunately for all of us, the Wheel of Mayhem happened to select one of his albums, which happened to be TEENAGE DREAM by Katy Perry. Unfortunately, not all of the Masters of Divinity were able to make it to this episode, and we'll have to close out the series with Father Chuck and Father Fun. But as the saying goes, start with a bang and end with a snap. For our penultimate episode of Music Mayhem 2020, Matt chose one of the most successful albums of all time, Michael Jackson's THRILLER. THRILLER has it all: Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean, that song with Paul McCartney, that one ballad, that other ballad, a couple of other ballads, and You Wanna Be Startin' Something, a song that has yet to come to an end. Listen, we all know why everyone picked up this album, and it was because of those three singles and their classic music videos. We definitely talk about those songs and even debate on which jacket is better: the Thriller jacket or the Beat It jacket? Trust us, it's a good one, smash that play button. Guest Co-Host Father Fun selects Florence + The Machine's sweeping and epic sophomore album, CEREMONIALS. If you're not familiar with Florence + The Machine, the first thing you'll notice is how powerful Florence Welch's voice is. It's the kind of voice that can overshadow the rest of your group, but thankfully, in CEREMONIALS, The Machine accompanies Florence's voice with grand, sweeping instrumentals that can only be found in ancient, gigantic churches whose halls are filled with booming choirs and organs. The album is deeply symbolic, filled with visceral imagery, and is overflowing with religious and spiritual tones. So, naturally, CEREMONIALS is kind of up our alley. Press play and join JP, Father Chuck, and Father Fun as they discuss CEREMONIALS by Florence + The Machine, and stay until the end to hear Matt's selection for next week. Father Chuck's favorite band of all-time is a little band from Boston known as Guster. Guster is known for their busker style music, their on-stage antics, and a guy who is absolutely wicked on the drums, dubbed the Thunder God. Listen to why Guster is Father Chuck's favorite band (Spoiler: It does involve a "Crow Phase"), and what the rest of the group thought of the album. In case you haven't noticed, Music Mayhem is here, and this week your moderator JP has chosen NEVERMIND by Nirvana. NEVERMIND was one of the most successful albums of all time, with banger after banger in the first half alone. Nirvana took the world by storm with the first track on the album, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and rock music was never the same again. This year's theme for Music Mayhem are favorite bands, and JP has been a massive fan of Nirvana and gone-to-early genius frontman Kurt Cobain. In this episode he goes into his history with coming to terms with Nirvana being his favorite band, and reveals his approach to analyzing the album. Press play to listen to JP, Father Chuck, Matt, and returning guest co-host Father Fun as they discuss Nirvana's NEVERMIND. JP and Father Chuck are freed from the shackles of a long and perilous Music Mayhem. So what do the Masters of Divinity talk about now?" One word: Alan! Listen folks, Music Mayhem was really hard and we just wanted to cut loose, let our hair down and talk about things like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and our visions for the perfect Jurassic Park sequel. In other words, it's a JP and Father Chuck riff-sesh! So, look, crack open a La Croix and let the sound of our voices wash over you as we talk A LOT about what's on our minds. In the final installment of this year's Music Mayhem, the crew let's fate decide on which album they'll be listening to. We wanted to end Music Mayhem with something out of the ordinary, so we came up with the Wheel of Mayhem. It's a very basic spin-wheel/wheel of fortune contest. Each of us chose two albums, one good album, one bad album, we threw the titles up on the wheel, and we gave it a spin. We want to shroud the episode in as much mystery as possible, so if you want to know what we end up listening to, you'll just have to press play! We hope everyone enjoyed this year's epic edition of Music Mayhem. We all had a blast and hope that next year will be even bigger, bolder, and mayhemm-y. Music Mayhem is on its way out this year, so why not subject Father Chuck to NSYNC one last time? This week, while Moderator JP is out for the week, Matt and Father Chuck dive deep into NSYNC's very last album: Celebrity. Celebrity was a vastly different album that was created by the vocal group, as it featured songs produced and written by actual members of the group, as opposed to being mass produced like previous entries. Matt felt this would be an important distinction for NSYNC, and thought it deserved Father Chuck's attention. Will this album change Father Chuck's mind on the popular boy band? Listen to find out! The best thing about Music Mayhem is discovering new music that somehow eluded you your whole life. So far on Music Mayhem, when our podcasters select an album, it's an album that they normally have a personal connection with. Some of these albums we grew up with, some we discovered for the first time recently and HAVE to share with the world what we think about it, but this time around, for his episode, Moderator JP wanted to select an album he'd never heard before, from a band he'd never been a fan of. And that's how we ended up listening to Definitely Maybe, the debut album of britpop legends Oasis. JP only had a few short weeks to not just listen to and deeply analyze the album, but to also become somewhat of an Oasis pro, since the group as a whole is not terribly familiar with the band. So we hope you enjoy this episode, as we all try our best to appreciate and take a close examination of what's considered to be one of the greatest British rock albums of all time, and we hope you'll take the journey with us and have a listen to Definitely Maybe by Oasis. In 2002, two of the most successful and distinct bands came together to form one of the best rock bands of the 2000s. JP, Matt and Amy are here to talk about it. Last week, Amy selected Audioslave's self-titled debut album for Music Mayhem. Audioslave has the distinction of being one of the few supergroups to find massive success with audiences, combining the talents of Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden. Those these bands are drastically distinct in sound, their formation created and unmistakably awesome sound reminiscent of the traditional classic rock of the 70s, being compared to such groups as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. It's difficult to talk about Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell without acknowledging the darker aspects of his work, as well as his tragic death. As a result the episode gets a little heavy, bringing up topics of depression and suicide, and how we deal with it using music and art. Way back in the late '90s, boy bands were all the rage. Countless indistinguishable boy pop groups sprung up throughout the music industry attempting to cash in on the fad. But there was only one group that would stand out by trying to strike out on their own terms... This week, Matt selected *NSYNC's second studio album, "No Strings Attached" for this year's edition of Music Mayhem. The reaction to the announcement was...mixed. Matt and JP were delighted, of course, but Father Chuck...? Well, you watched his reaction videos, didn't you? The gang is also once again joined by our newest addition to the Master of Divinity family, Amy. With a background in music, a freelance performer, and someone who grew up with an obsessed *NSYNC fan for a sister, Amy has a unique perspective on the massively popular boy band. So, how does the album hold up? Is there a deep meaning to the lyrics? Is it a well-crafted piece of music from a group of talented vocal artists, or a product mass-produced by a hit factory (based in Sweden, oy)? Find out today, and hit play on either SoundCloud or YouTube. In 1998, The Beastie Boys released their fifth album, "Hello Nasty" and it was unlike any album they had ever released. "Hello Nasty" was released during pretty formative years for both JP and Father Chuck, and as a result, the music videos, the hit singles, and the deep cuts inspired them deeply, not just upon release, but in later years as well. The album is as irreverent, erratic, and as dense as any other Beastie Boys album, but the injection of spiritual, social and political consciousness takes the album to a completely different level. Matt, unfortunately, couldn't make it, but stay to the end for his announcement of next week's album! Get ready to rock out in this one y'all! One of our favorite people (THE John Sullivan IV) joins us in this episode to talk about one of our favorite topics...music! And all the good sound things that your ears like.*PSA: our traveling studio decided to be as grunge as your hosts' souls and as such there are a couple technical issues! We apologize in advance...but just think of it as an ode to the punk of yesteryear!*Apparently this episode's Malbec reminds Sean and Sully of communion. Sean reveals her love for Teen Wolf and Elvis Presley. Sully offers his infinite wisdom fountain. Meagan continues to laugh at herself because, at this point, no one else is. And Chester (our friend's cat) decides to offer his opinion on HIS favorite music! Moral of the story: all music is amazing and if you like it, own it y'all! Rock on forever. THIS WEEK... Whoa, have we got a doozy of an episode for you, MoD Squad. In our final installment of this year's Music Mayhem, JP has brought us The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters' second album that featured such timeless alt. rock hits like Monkey Wrench, My Hero and Everlong. JP has been in love with the album for quite some time and Matt has a fondness for Foo Fighters...but when Father Chuck and Guest Moderator Father Fun listen to the album, they're not as impressed. Mutiny! Civil war! A house divided! Listen to the epic conclusion of Music Mayhem which clocks in at [checks notes]..an hour and fifty-five minutes. Surely, no conclusions are nearly as epic as ours! THIS WEEK... Father Fun is back, baby! And he's brought us a big, juicy piece of music for us to dig our fangs into - the smash broadway hit HAMILTON, by Lin-Manuel Miranda. We know that this is a pretty unconventional choice as it's not technically an album, but we've decided that in an attempt to not homogenize Music Mayhem, we want to use the month to explore as much of the landscape of music as possible -- so what better way to do that than to listen to a hit musical play? Hamilton is a pop culture phenomenon. The first of it's kind, Hamilton presents a multi-culticultural hip-hop narrative about the life of Alexander Hamilton, and the foundation of the United States of America. Examining a musical on a platform like Music Mayhem was a fun and new experience for us, as Father Chuck and JP had never actually seen the play or listened to the soundtrack in its entirety, unlike Father Fun who prides himself on being a true Hamilton fan. It's an episode for newbs and fans alike! Listen the soundtrack as soon as possible, or if you're not convinced, listen to the episode and find out how a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor grow up to be a hero and a scholar.
THIS WEEK... Oh boy. This installment of Music Mayhem is unprecedented, as Matt brings us Supernatural by DC Talk. Why so unprecedented? Is it because it's the first CCM album we've discussed? Or is it because it's...not...great? You could say both! DC Talk's Supernatural was the follow-up to Jesus Freak, which was the band's most acclaimed and most remembered album. Even though Supernatural found a lot of success financially, the album didn't produce anything particularly special or memorable. This didn't stop a young Matt Wells from purchasing it as his first ever album though! Find out why exactly Matt chose such a bewildering follow-up, in the second installment of Music MAY-hem! THIS WEEK... Marvel's The Avengers: Infinty War has finally hit theaters, raking in all the money at the box office and leaving hardcore fans of the Marvel franchise breathless with an unexpected ending. MoD is here to talk about the good, the bad, and the Thanos. Does it live up to the hype? Listen and find out! We also kick off Music Mayhem by announcing next week's album!
