9 Networking Mistakes Aspiring Wildlife Professionals Need to Avoid

Networking is super important. As someone who has been in the wildlife field for over 20 years and has attended countless scientific conferences since 2006, I know firsthand how networking can influence your career success. Experience is most important, but at times, who you know can even trump this. Networking can lead to jobs you didn't know about, or maybe didn't even exist in addition to other helpful career-building impacts like publication and volunteer opportunities. And if you want to study charismatic species like big cats, marine mammals, or carnivores, you simply have to network. But I also know for a lot of us, networking can feel daunting and intimidating, so we avoid it. In fear of making a mistake, we don't do anything or only limit networking to opportunities where others take the lead - such as our boss or advisor introducing you to their colleagues. But in this era of incredibly high competition for wildlife jobs, this is unfortunately, not enough.  In this episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast, I delve into the networking mistakes often made by aspiring and early career wildlife professionals. I know these because I myself have made many of these and see a lot of the same things happening in my students and members of my Facebook community group Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology. Drawing from my extensive experience, I emphasize how perspective and hindsight has allowed me to now see what I should have been doing, now what others are doing when they reach out to me, and how these actions are perceived from as a mid-level wildlife career professional. The discussion also includes real-life success stories from my students, highlighting the transformative power of active engagement, specific intentions, and preparation. I outline nine key mistakes to avoid common pitfalls, such as being too casual or coming off as self-centered, so you can improve your networking skills and boost your career!Lastly, platforms like LinkedIn can be incredibly powerful, even if you can't attend in-person events. So, I'll also underscore the value of online networking. You'll learn about the importance of proactive follow-up and building genuine relationships, expand your professional network, and open doors to exciting career opportunities.Specifically, I go over:The importance of networking The 9 biggest and common networking mistakes to avoidHow to network intentionally with a purposeTips for making genuine connections without being self-centeredThe art of following up and maintaining relationshipsNavigating networking as an introvertRemember, in wildlife careers, networking isn't just a tool—it's a vital strategy for advancement.I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. Ah networking. That thing that VAs hate but need to do to build their business. Let's start by talking about why we don't like networking. Yes, it's true - a lot of VAs are introverts. I don't have a statistic on that but because we have always played a support role, we are comfortable being in the background - taking care of things for the people who go out there and make the sales, make the speeches, do the meetings - and we run the show from the sidelines. We are happy to. So then when we start our own business, we have to assume a role that we haven't before - and we don't always know what to do, or how to do it well. Networking is one of those things that comes up time and time again when I speak with VAs who are struggling in their business, or paralyzed with fear agt the thought of talking to others about what they do. And so .... we network poorly. We do what we think we are supposed to do, even if it doesn't feel good - and we struggle to make it work. Or we avoid it and then our business stays stuck - and that still feels normal.  Being in business should not be a struggle. Sharing how you can help people is not a struggle. You're just doing it wrong. Let's talk about 5 ways VAs are messing up their networking (and yes, then we'll talk about how to do it better!) 1. Facebook groups - if I had a nickel for every Facebook post or omment I saw that made me cringe, I'd be doing this podcast from a pub in Ireland. Facebook groups are an awesome way to build your business - but you have to use them wisely to make them work for you.  What not to do? Don't respond to any post with PM me, I can help. If someone is looking for help with something, offer the help right there in the comments. Don't make it about a sale. Be helpful!  Why is this important? Moving the conversation offline does nothing for your business. It makes you look like you are pushing for a sale, and no one can see the expertise you bring to the person who posted their issue, or what you could bring to others in the group. Keep your help online in front of the whole group and get known for the consistent and amazing help you can provide. Trust me, the conversations will go offline - but you need to build up your credibility as a helpful person first. Facebook groups will help you when you show up and get noticed by everyone for not trying to make a sale every time someone posts. I tell the story of a local Facebook group for women business owners here where I live, that has 25K members, and 3 VAs are always getting tagged in posts as referrals when someone asks about a VA. 3! Why? Because they are doing it right. They have gotten to know the others in the group, they are helpful - they attend the events - they do a great job for their clients. There are many more VAs in that group, but they don't get referred in the same way.  2. Talking in elevator pitches - I make no secret that I do not like the elevator pitch. I think they are useless in most circumstances, and that's mainly because people who teach you to write them try to get you to cram everything you do into a 30 second run on sentence. Honestly, don't get me started on this! An elevator pitch is supposed to be a short, memorable statement you make to describe what you do. But what ends up happening is that we try to fit everything we do into it, and then we edit it down so we fit into the time limit, and we expect people to remember it. Does it work sometimes? Sure. But most of the time it's annoying and too wordy. When you are networking with people, you need to concentrate on making conversation. Asking questions. Back and forth. Not telling them everything about you in one single sentence. And pitching at all just doesn't fly with me when you are networking. A pitch is a sales pitch. Gross. Why are you selling anything?  What you need to do instead is ask questions - what does this person do for their business? Who are their clients? Where do they find them? How do they work with them? Where do you fit in to that - can you help them with any part of their business? If you can, then discuss that. But don't announce what you do from the moment you shake their hand.  If you are struggling with how to have conversations, I can help you find those words, and make it easy. 3. Talking about yourself - don't talk about yourself when you are networking. But Tracey, you say, how will the person know what I can do? Because the conversation will come around to you - just don't lead with it.  Imagine going to a restaurant and having the server tell you everything they have on the menu, before you even have a drink in front of you They have no idea what you like, what you might be allergic to, how hungry you are, how much you are looking to spend ... etc. A good server will come and ask you if it's your first time at the restaurant, and establish a little rapport. Are you celebrating anything special? Would you like a drink to start? Would you like to hear the specials? And if you ask what they recommend, they should ask you what you like - before recommending something. The same holds true for you as the VA - you are the service provider and the other person is the potential client (not that you are not always trying to make the sale today - but the networking conversation will still be structured very much like a sales conversation. So you ask them questions about their business because you want to know if they need your help. You can answer questions they ask you about your business of course, but don't make yourself the focus on the conversation. Talking to others about your business is meant for colleagues. Focus the conversation on them - and if you can help them. And just as a point of interest - i don't mean self promotion, that's not what talking about yourself is. It's about being curious and getting the person you are talking to to let you know what they need help with. And a simple 'I help my clients do that' often suffices as the response. If you need help figuring out how not to talk about yourself, I can help! 4. Don't be a wall flower - making networking work for you means you have to speak up! If you are spending your time networking, you have to find a way to be visible, and that is through conversation.  You don't have to meet everyone in the room, but you need to meet at least one person - I always think 3 to 5 is a great number no matter how many people are in attendance. Making connections with just a few people is so much easier than trying to reach the entire room. And this goes for online events as well. You don't have to speak from the stage, but there is no point being a part of a group that you can grow relationships in, and staying silent. Lurking online. Be helpful. That's all you need to do. It sounds simple and it really is. Choose a time every morning to visit the groups you are a part of online, and look for opportunities to help the people there. You only need to be a part of 3 good group to find great clients. You are probably part of many more groups than that - but if you are not showing up and taking part, they aren't of any use to you. Own your expertise - and share it. Even if someone else has answered a question for someone, answer it yourself too. It's not a contest, it's about being helpful wherever you can. If you need to build up your confidence so you can start networking, I'd love to help you do that. 5. Follow Up - the last piece of networking is arguably the most important one. Following up. So many VAs give up on the follow up, and they lose clients in the process. How many times should you follow up with someone, I get asked often. Until they say yes, or until they tell you to stop following up with them, is always my answer. How callous! That sounds like I'm badgering someone. But no, you're not! You are building a relationship with someone. you are simply staying in touch.  You don't follow up by saying 'do you want to start now?' 'how about now?' 'are you ready to hire me yet?' You follow up by saying 'how did that event go for you?', 'have you talked to so and so recently?' 'I haven't seen you in x group recently - just checking in - what are you working on?' The fortune really is in the follow up. When you are building relationships with people that builds trust. And when they need help they will think of you. Networking isn't a dirty word - it's a necessary part of doing business, and the better you get at it, the easier it gets. And the better it works for you. I have a huge network of VAs and business owners. I talk to a lot of people every single day - in emails, PMs, Zoom calls, phone calls, networking events, through my clients and association members. Are they all paying clients of mine? Nope. But they all know what I do and they know where to find me if they need me. It's a marathon, not a sprint. And it's natural. It's just conversations. The numbers will work in your favour - the more people you talk to , the more clients you will get.  Show up consistently, make it about them, get laser focused on asking great questions, be helpful in front of as many people as you can, and keep in touch. That's all networking is.  Stop talking AT people, and start talking TO them. Like Diane says, it's an investment in your business, and it can yield great results for years to come. And it just takes your time. So do it well, and it will yield you results. Find groups of people online or offline that you can help. Help them and get known for helping them. And you'll be one of 3 VAs in 25K who gets referred almost every single day of every month. Always be networking, you never know where your next client will come from. Networking and having conversations with potential clients is a huge focus in The Virtual Circle, my mastermind group for Virtual Assistants. Check it out at www.YourVAMentor.com/TVC (the virtual circle) - I bet it's exactly what you need to start getting clients for your VA business. If you need some help with doing networking better, reach out to me at tracey@yourvamentor.com I've helped hundreds of VAs through their challenges and got them on their way to the next thing. I'd love to do the same for you through private or group coaching. That's all I've got for you this week, see you next time!

When you work in an office, the idea of networking can be simple. You may spend time at meetings, going to the break room, or even a ride in the elevator and you are able to meet other professionals who will help you to reach some of your goals. You may have to do a little work to go to conferences and more in order to make the connections that grow your network, but you can still get the work done. Things get a little harder when you work from home. You still need to form some of these important connections, to meet others and work hard, in order to finally get ahead and reach for success. Networking when you are not in the office can be hard, but it may be one of the best ways to grow your business and make sure that you meet new people. Virtual networking allows this to happen, whether you are in the office or work from anywhere. Through virtual networking, you will be able to take advantage of online platforms, social media, and even online webinars and conferences in order to form connections with others, even when you are not able to meet them in-person. Virtual networking allows the individual who works remotely a chance to network that they may not have had in the past. Today, I'll go over 5 mistakes to avoid while trying to grow your network online. For more resource check out Better Business With Magic For performance info: Here

Networking, it might as well be a four-letter word. Talking to strangers, talking about yourself, there's nothing more awkward, right?  Yah, that does sound terrible. But the good news is ... there's another way to think about networking, which is about building community, gathering information, and making connections. In this episode, Maren will help you rethink networking so that you're building lasting connections with people who will help you in your job search because your connections are real, genuine, and built around common interests and values.

Networking takes work. Sam Charner offers specific advice to help you become a more effective networker, no matter whether you're a student, a new jobseeker, or a career changer. Don't just sign up for a networking group. Get involved.Don't just sign up and read the occasional newsletter. Participate in virtual and in-person events. Volunteer to help organize the next event.Join small projects and committees to get to know a small group of people on a deeper level. Ask members to recommend job boards, events and additional networking groups and professional associations. Don't go into every interaction thinking, “How is this person going to help me get a job?” Build relationships. How do I choose a professional community (or more than one)? Identity-specific communities can be wonderful support systems. Examples include communities for women, veterans, and people who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQ. Joining geographic-specific communities helps you meet other local and regional planet savers, and also people who live where you want to move. There are sustainability-minded groups all over the globe, in neighborhoods, universities, cities and towns, states and provinces. To learn more about your desired field or profession and make connections within it, join industry groups like those for wind energy, agriculture, transit and urban planning, packaging, supply chains and more. What else should I consider before joining?Make sure the topics important to the organization are also important to you. You can't join every organization, so pick the ones you're truly curious about. What does it cost to join? If it's expensive, this community may be more interested in recruiting experts and seasoned professionals with extensive experience than newbies. If you're not ready for that commitment, keep looking. Word of mouth counts. Know a member of the community you're thinking about? Ask them what it's like — and if they think it's worth it.Learn more:Join your local Net Impact chapter (or start one)! Mistakes in networking often arise because we have a poor understanding of, or a poor framework for how to network in the first place! Networking should be "other" focused, shouldn't be "tit for tat" and excessively focused on reciprocity. With a few of these changes in paradigm, networking should be a fun and effective exercise which will lead to business growth.

Top Five Networking Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

There are five HUGE networking mistakes most lawyers make and all of them could be avoided. I outline these blunders below. How many of them do you make?Mistake One: Not Showing Up ConsistentlyYou need to show up, on time, every time. People need to find you reliable and predictable. That gives them confidence. If you constantly attend networking events and you always keep your appointments, people will trust you. Trust is the foundation fo referrals. Mistake Two: Not Putting In The WorkWhen you show up, you have to connect with people and listen to them. This is hard work. Don't get me wrong, it's not swinging a sledge hammer or laying concrete, but it is hard work nonetheless. Making a true, empathetic, genuine connection with another business owner is critical to networking success. If you want multiple referrals each month, you need to do this over and over again. That's work and you need to do it. Mistake Three: Not Following UpAfter the initial meeting the real work begins. This is the follow-up. Adding people to your contacts database, sending them weekly email newsletters and monthly direct mail newsletters, and reaching out to have regular conversations, is all part of the program. If you don't do this, you won't generate new referrals. Mistake Four: Not Giving More Than You ReceiveYou cannot expect to get referrals unless you give referrals and it is not proportionate. Successful networkers give about three times more referrals than they receive. So to get 10 new referrals during a month, you should be passing at least 30 referrals per month to people in your network. Why is this? It's because people need to 1). Build up their trust in you. 2). Understand your referral expectations. 3). Discover what to listen for to connect you with someone good. 4). learn how to make the connection to you in a way that is successful.Teach people how to refer you by the way you refer business to them. Mistake Five: Not Asking for ReferralsPeople will refer you if you ask them. Ask to meet someone specific. Give them the name of the person you want to meet. Give them their title. Give them the name of the company they work for. Give them the industry. Tell them why you want to meet that person. All of these things are essential. When you ask with this level of specificy, you'll be successful. If you want to get more referrals and be more successful networking, stop making these mistakes. Your bank account will be glad you did.If you're interested in a shortcut to referral success, join my Inner Circle Community. We not only teach you how to pass business and receive referrals, we help facilitate the referral process among our members. One of the members of my inner circle community just received a closing on a real estate deal that will net him six figures. Another member of the community passes some business that was worth $17,000 directly to the attorney. We are seeking attorneys in all practice areas, in several jurisdictions. In Miami we need a good trust and estates attorney, an immigration attorney, and a bankruptcy attorney, In New York we need trust and estates, real estate, family law and personal injury. In other areas of the country, we are open to suggestions. The investment to become a member of this community is $1,099 per year. This is easily recouped from just one new matter. To join follow this link:https://davelorenzo.com/inner-circle-special-invitation/The investment will increase on June 15, 2020. Don't wait. “The #1 trait of a great networker is a good listener.” Show Notes: YourResultsRadio.com/20 We all know the importance of networking, but chances are you are doing it wrong. Networking doesn't mean you should go out, shake hands with a hundred people, tell them your name, and give them your business card. That's not networking - that's cold calling. True networking is a giving relationship. It means really making a connection with people and helping them. Let me give you an example of bad networking. Most people go to a networking event to sell. No one goes to buy. That's not networking. You have to go out there, listen to others, and help them. Put them first and they'll want to help you in return. If you're not out to put them first you're going to seem sleazy, pushy, and self centered. In fact studies have shown that extroverts are the worst people at networking. Introverts show all of the best traits of a great networker. They listen, they care, and they make recommendations. On this episode of Results Radio we are joined by the great Dr. Ivan Misner. Misner is an expert at networking, and created the largest business network group there is: BNI. Download this episode today to learn how to properly network from the best there is. “Desperation is not referable.” Highlights School doesn't teach networking skills. Networking is not face to face cold calling. This comes off as desperate. Everyone shows up at networking events to sell, no one comes to buy. Introverts are perfect for networking. Do six things a thousand times, not a thousand things six time. Most business people don't really have a business plan. You have to REALLY know your numbers. Don't worry about making a bad decision - you will. Mistakes are how you learn and make you stronger. We've had so much success for so long that we've become complacent. Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job

We say it a lot here at Mac’s List: networking is the single best thing you can do for your job search—or your career, in general. But attending a single networking event probably isn’t going to land you a job right away. Networking is about building mutually-beneficial, long-term relationships, not making awkward demands for a job. In fact, according to this week’s guest, Abby Kohl, the single biggest mistake you can make in a networking event is to ask for a job. Another fatal error is beginning a conversation by announcing your unemployment. Both actions are deadly mistakes for the same reason: they make networking all about you and your needs. Such an approach is more likely to scare people away than to lead to a constructive conversation. Instead, Abby recommends that you always focus on how you can help the person you’re talking to. Listen to their ideas, try to identify their challenges, and ask how you can help. This positions you as a solution provider—the kind of employer every organization wants. It also builds goodwill with your contact, increasing the likelihood that they will assist you in your job search. Abby’s other networking tips include: When you’ve made a good connection, ask for a follow-up meeting over lunch or coffee. Find a “job search buddy” who is looking for similar work. Always have business cards available. Never say you’re unemployed. Instead, say that you are “between successes.” This Week's Guest: Abby Kohut Abby Kohut, founder of Absolutely Abby, is a recruiter who has filled more than 10,000 jobs. Through her website, books, and talks Abby shares hiring secrets other recruiters won’t tell you. Abby is on a mission to help one million job seekers. She is now driving across the United States on a nationwide tour to accomplish the goal. If you have a job search group, contact Abby on her website to create an event in your town. Meet Abby offers a free teleseminar, “Interviewing Ingenuity.” This Week’s Job Search Resource Ben’s resource this week is from the PBS segment, "How to Make a Personal Connection with an Employer Even if the Job Listing Forbids It," by headhunter, Nick Corcodilos. Most job postings explicitly say ‘no calls please.’ Nick recommends finding an alternative way to contact the hiring manager and discussing their problems in a constructive manner. This Week’s Listener Question Joining the Mac's List team as a guest-host is Andrea Gerson, Portland-based career coach and principal at Resume Scripter.  Andrea, Ben, and Mac offer advice to listener Megan Smith, who wants to know which format she should use for her resume. If you would like the team to answer a job-related question or if you’ve found a job resource you think everyone should know about email it to ben@macslist.org or call at 716-JOB-TALK. If we use your question on the air, you will receive either a copy of our new book, Land Your Dream Job Anywhere or a Mac’s List Coffee Mug, your choice. Today we are talking with Tiffanie Kellog who is the author of the book 4½ Networking Mistakes Over the past decade, Tiffanie Kellog has helped thousands of entrepreneurs make more money while saving time so they can have more fun by creating referrals for life. Tiffanie is in demand as a professional keynote speaker, coach and trainer with the Referral Institute, and is co-owner of a business with her husband Rob. I met her at a local networking event put on annually by the Tampa Bay Business Owners (TBBO).  Before we go any further, I want to invite any of my listeners that are considering an investing business to join me at Podfest 2017 Multimedia Expo.  Podfest is the annual event that convinced me to start the CashFlowGuys podcast and has introduced me to many notable people that have changed my life in many ways.  No matter if you want to start a youtube channel, podcast or any other digital type blog this event will certainly help you launch and provide you with solid information to take the next steps. Tiffanie started a business several years ago and by doing so was forced to cold call in order to gain business.  After a short time, she discovered there had to be a better way and begun mastering the fine art of person to person networking.  Mastering networking was certainly a challenge, however she rose to the challenge which eventually led her to write a book on the subject. During our conversation she mentions that we should take the opportunity to share “why” we are doing our chosen profession which tends to make the conversation more memorable. Business cards are often misused in a networking environment although they certainly have their place in the event when deployed properly.  First, make introductions and have a good conversation.  If you are interested in what the other person may have to offer you at some future point, ask for their card at that time.  If the feeling is mutual, they will ask for yours. The bottom line is to not provide the card until asked for it to avoid “in-person spamming” More often than not; people make this critical networking mistake by forcing a business card on someone before they're ready to receive it.  In today’s society we find people not taking the time to really focus on what the other party does for a living.  I have found this to be the case on several occasions while at networking events. A very effective means of follow-up includes sending a personalized handwritten note to the person that you meet at the networking event.  It's the little things like this that make you stand out in this busy world we live in today. In order to network effectively be careful of spamming your prospect unknowingly. Constant contact that is unwelcome or unsolicited could be misconstrued as spam. Name tags are an important part of networking; it puts people at ease when they meet you especially for a second time when they may have forgotten your name. When using a name tag; keep it simple.  A company logo is appropriate as is a first name, last name and be sure skip the titles.  A catchy tagline would help people make you more memorable Networking isn't about building a huge database of people that you're never going to talk to. Instead, it's about building a refined core group of people that will refer you on a regular basis over and over again.  Its methodology is likened to speed dating; it's getting in front of several people meeting them and then refining the list of people that are most likely to refer you on a regular basis. You can pickup your copy of Tiffanie’s book by using the following affiliate link: http://amzn.to/2eQSDth Lastly, if you want to get together to have a conversation over the phone with me help you get unstuck, get motivated or get more information about how you can get to the next level in your real estate investing and go to CashfFlowGuys.com/AskTyler If you have not yet joined our Facebook group, head on over to CashFlowGuys.com/Group to become a member and take part in our video Q and A’s and tutorials.
