So…most women have not been around the Private Equity table. Do you know what to do with this in divorce? Do you know what options you have outside of normal investing post-divorce? Here to talk about that in more detail is Jeremiah Boucher! Jeremiah is the founder of Patriot Holdings and explains his company's investment approach in today's episode. He highlights that private equity involves investing in privately held companies or non-publicly traded assets. Institutional investors, such as pension funds, endowments, and high-net-worth individuals, provide the funds to acquire ownership stakes in these companies. He also differentiates private equity from venture capital, stating that private equity focuses on established private companies to enhance their performance, while venture capital targets early-stage startups with high growth potential. Both private equity and venture capital firms utilize their funds or funds from investors for investments, but their strategies and objectives vary. Which can be terrifying to try and understand on your own, if you have a soon-to-be-ex who is ‘at the table' and has Private Equity ventures. Topics Discussed * What is private equity? How should women in divorce handle it? * Difference between private equity and VC Capital * Why people should invest in a private equity * How to know if it's a good company to invest in * How do these investments actually provide clients with tax advantages About Jeremiah Boucher Jeremiah Boucher is a value investor and the founder of Patriot Holdings LLC, and has specialized in the acquisition and development of alternative commercial real estate assets over the last 20 years. Coming from humble beginnings, growing up in Las Vegas and spending his summers working for his father's paving company in New Hampshire, Jeremiah learned the real estate business from the ground up. He has spent his entire career in the real estate business, first by quitting college at 20 and diving into the industry as a real estate agent and single-family residential investor. He pivoted into manufactured housing parks and helped build one of the country's most significant manufactured housing funds. Eventually, he separated his assets from the fund and created his own private equity and real estate management and development company, Patriot Holdings. In this episode, Host Susan Guthrie and Top Financial Expert, Olivia Summerhill CFP, CDFA, CMC, share insights into the significance that the marital standard of living (MSOL) may have on your divorce and how it can impact your ability to maintain your lifestyle post-divorce. "I just want to maintain my standard of living."  Divorce attorneys and financial professionals hear that a lot but what does that really mean?  What constitutes your standard of living and how does the law look at the situation when it comes to helping people continue that lifestyle in their life BEYOND? The MSOL issue most commonly arises when discussing just how much spousal support or alimony will be paid by the higher earning spouse to the other.   Many people assume that they will be entitled to receive an amount that allows them to continue that lifestyle but what about the fact that  there is only so much money to go around?  We discuss this all and more in the episode. Olivia Summerhill, CFP, CDFA, CMC founded a financial consulting firm dedicated to helping women maintain their lifestyles and thrive post-divorce by educating and empowering them financially.   Although Olivia's niche is celebrity and ultra-high net worth clients, she works with clients in diverse financial situations through her extensive pro bono work.  Olivia knows that when it comes to money and finances, there is nothing more empowering than knowledge and she shares so many golden nuggets with listneners in this episode - it's a MUST listen! August is National Financial Awareness month (it's okay, we didn't know either), so in honor of always trying to become more aware and educated, this month's guest is the very badass Olivia Summerhill of Summerhill Wealth Management, an asset management firm that specifically works with high net worth women before, during, and after divorce. If the words "wealth" and "high net worth" have you about to skip this episode, hear me out: this conversation is way more than talking about what house billionaires get to keep after they find their husband boinking the nanny.  It's true in America that there's a huge void when it comes to empowering women in terms of money and specifically in divorce, where it's more likely that the husband has been managing the finances of the family.  Women need to know what our options are and what our rights are, and as the financial advisor sector is very male-dominant, Olivia has created a firm that ONLY works with women in order to be an ally and a champion and to provide a safe space for women who may not have had the same financial education that their spouses have had. So we're not just talking wealthy divorce, we're talking approaching money from a place of financial literacy, empowerment, and even if you're single, understanding the psychology, emotions, and behaviors behind your own personal approach to finances. Okay so maybe all those words still have you running for the hills, but I promise you you'll become as big a fan of Olivia Summerhill as I am after this episode.  She even shares some free resources for those of us not lucky enough to be able to hire her! Divorce in the Ultra-High Net Worth Space is a little bit different.  Gates, Bezos, Kardashian . . . You don't have to look too far into the headlines to see how important this space has become for wealth families. While the emotional pain is the same, the stakes are higher and the process can be more complicated.  OLIVIA SUMMERHILL joins us to help us think through the issues. In her practice, Olivia has seen the devastating effects of divorce on stay-at-home mothers in ultra-high-net-worth families. She is the founder of SUMMERHILL WEALTH MANAGEMENT and helps to protect their lifestyle when they are going through a high-stakes divorce. Having developed her financial career at JP Morgan, Olivia broke out on her own and started her own firm focusing on the space. Olivia's practices focuses on affluent women.  She is one of few financial professionals to hold Certified Financial Planner, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, Certified Divorce Specialist, and Behavioral Financial Advising credentials. I spoke with Olivia on the ins-and-outs of team-building around a divorce, her unique business model focusing on UNHW women and her advice for people going through the process. Describe your background- -How did you get to that point to making the leap to starting your own practice? -Any specific challenges? -You focus on a few specific niches- larger situations and women coming out of divorce. How did you come to specialize in that area? -How do you define UNHW? ($50mm) Engaging With The Client: Information Asymmetry- -How do you get past the initial client's shock? -How do you get clients through that education process? Teamwork with the Advisors -Divorce is complicated and involves many different experts besides the divorce lawyer- what does a good team look like?  (Legal, Tax, Investment, Estate, Psych, Administrative/scheduling) -How do you integrate with the team / issue spot / decide who the quarterback is? -Any examples where that has worked well (and where it hasn't?) What does your process look like? -How do you know when to step in or step away from the emotional and psychological repair that needs to happen- when do you call in the experts?  Do you get involved in the child custody issues? -A big challenge is understanding cash flow needs and dividing illiquid wealth – how do you help clients think through that – how does that work with a divorce lawyer's strategy?  Pre/Post nuptial planning? -If going through the internal questioning, what should someone thinking about a divorce be thinking about?  What information should they be thinking of collecting?  What happens when you don't think in these “business” terms?
