Elizabeth McGovern was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime and, by the age of 21, had played leading roles in Once Upon A Time In America followed by The Handmaid's Tale and The Wings of the Dove. She is probably best known though for playing Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey. She is now on stage starring in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The actress and musician joins Jessica to discuss her varied career so far and what drew her to the role of Martha. A misconduct hearing today will formally dismiss David Carrick from the Metropolitan Police, after he admitted twenty-four counts of rape and multiple sexual assaults. Carrick was finally stopped when one woman reported him in October 2021. Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, has apologised to Carrick's victims, and says the force is currently also investigating 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims involving about 800 of its officers. Jessica is joined to discuss by Shabnam Chaudhri, who served as an officer in the Met for 30 years. Tomorrow will see the start of a second round of strikes by the Royal College of Nursing. The RCN says that this will be the biggest walkout so far, affecting 55 trusts in England - that's 11 more than last month. They are calling for a pay rise of 5% above inflation, with inflation currently sitting at 14%. The government says the demands are unaffordable and pay rises were decided by independent pay review bodies. NHS staff in England and Wales - including nurses - have already received an average increase of 4.75%. The union says that there will be a further two strikes in February in England and Wales, unless there is movement on pay by the end of this month. Pat Cullen is the General Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing, and joins Jessica. Today marks the 250th anniversary of the UK in the Antarctic following the first voyage of James Cook in 1773. In contrast to Cook's all-male crew in the 18th century, the UK's current polar leadership includes several women. What is it like to be a female leader in this field? Jessica Creighton is joined by Jane Rumble, the Head of Polar Regions Department at the UK Foreign Office, Professor Dame Jane Francis, the Director of the British Antarctic Survey and Captain Milly Ingham, the Captain of HMS Protector, The Royal Navy's ice patrol ship to find out. One of literary history's favourite characters – Alison the Wife of Bath – from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is re-examined in a new book by Professor Marion Turner from Oxford University. Marion tells Jessica how the lusty life story of the medieval Alison who married five times has inspired other writers from Shakespeare to Zadie Smith.

You may consider yourself duly warned and advised.Presenting: a return conversation with Wallace Stroby about Sergio Leone's masterpiece, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.In which: we discuss all things surrounding Leone's masterpiece – history, beginnings, endings, duels, landscapes, influences, restraint (and the lack thereof) characters – and Leone himself as well as a broad look at spaghetti westerns (and their successors), the music of Ennio Morricone, the impact of the film on Wallace's writing – as well as his own designs on tackling (or not tackling) the western genre – and more.About Wallace: Wallace Stroby is an award-winning journalist and the author of nine novels, four of which feature Crissa Stone, the professional thief labeled “crime fiction's best bad girl ever.” His new novel, HEAVEN'S A LIE, was called "a pure hit of adrenaline" by author Harlan Coben on NBC's TODAY SHOW. You can't go from backwards to perfection [But still we try] We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk One of the biggest mistakes we often make when trying to make some changes to our weight, health and fitness is………………. To try to go from “going backwards”…………. Straight to ‘perfection'. Forwards and 100 miles per hour. From eating and living in a way that's caused us to gain weight, lose energy, etc………… To trying to “eat like a nutritionist” and “train like an athlete”. And, when we don't feel we can maintain that, to return to the ‘backwards' approach. We get it. Faster progress is more exciting. Easier to remain enthused about. Creates motivation. When we “see it working”. And we're all for fast progress. But……….. What usually makes the fastest progress……….. Is the knowingly sub-optimal approach…………. That we, on average, maintain. Fast enough to feel is worthwhile. Not so much we feel any sort of need to “stop”. Much love, Jon ‘In the name of love' Hall P.S. Yesterday's middle name was Treat Williams. An American actor apparently. He was in Once Upon A Time In America.

The piece of music featured in this episode is called Halftone Comics. It’s a light and cheerful comedy soundtrack that I wrote for the superhero audio drama Heroics, a story about a group of superheroes who decide to pivot and go evil. It contains a lot of live woodwind instrumentation and serves as a leitmotif for the story’s comic shop. My name is Erik Jourgensen. I'm a composer from Los Angeles, and this is How I Make Music. IN THIS EPISODE 01:13 Influences included Ennio Morricone’s score for Once Upon A Time In America and Jon Brion’s score for Lady Bird. 02:20 On Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, there’s a comic shop called The Nerdist. I used to go there to watch comedy. I wanted this piece to capture the feel of just hanging out in a cool comic shop like The Nerdist. 03:43 We were fortunate enough to be able to have live players on the Heroics score. Bassoon, sax, trombone, strings and guitar were included in the lineup. 05:11 I wanted to avoid using sample libraries if possible. One of the challenges was creating a live sounding full series score without the budget for an ensemble on every track. 07:26 The energy you put is the feeling the listener will get out of your music. 08:16 For one of the basslines, I used a Fender Telecaster and pitched it down an octave because I didn’t have an electric bass at the time. 08:34 I also pitched the bassoon up until it sounded like a flute or clarinet 09:16 There’s a cool trumpet moment which I achieved by first sketching the part by singing into an iPhone to see what comes out. This part was the first thing that came, and I immediately thought a brass section would sound exciting, fun and a little kitsch. 10:02 To me, the rising chord progression has the quintessential superhero tone to them. 11:02 I use a lot of analog gear. Listen to how the bassoon and winds sound through tape echo and spring reverb. 11:36 When it comes to music, there’s a fine balance between repetition and variation. The Beatles, Beethoven all had this fine balance.
