Is it time to drastically change the way we think about failure? What if failure is the key to success? John Danner is a faculty member at UC Berkeley and Princeton University and the author of Built for Growth and The Other “F” Word. His research focuses on leadership, strategy, and innovation. He regularly consults with Fortune 500 companies, offering actionable strategies to help them adapt to ever-changing landscapes and grow. John and Greg discuss the paradox of Silicon Valley's celebration of failure and the reality behind it, turning regrets into strategic resources, the importance of self-knowledge, both for individuals and organizations, and how understanding your personality can influence successful entrepreneurship.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.***This episode was recorded in 2021.**Show Links:Recommended Resources:Thomas Edison Daniel KahnemanMark Coopersmith Jeff Bezos Barry Schwartz | unSILOed Sara Blakely Ben & Jerry's Jack MaGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC BerkeleyProfessional WebsiteProfile on LinkedInHis Work:Built for Growth: How Builder Personality Shapes Your Business, Your Team, and Your Ability to Win The Other "F" Word: How Smart Leaders, Teams, and Entrepreneurs Put Failure to WorkEpisode Quotes:Embracing failure leads to growth03:33: There's something quintessentially human about failure that connects all of us because we are all experts at it. We do it all the time in very unexpected ways, yet we tend too often to walk away from it, to ignore it, to not talk about it. And it's become, I think, a taboo unto itself, but also, from a leadership point of view, in my experience, both in teaching, consulting, and running organizations, starting organizations, it is a huge barrier in most organizations that I'm familiar with. If you can't talk about failure, if you can't genuinely, honestly, openly discuss it and understand what's behind it, you're never going to be in a position to actually leverage and benefit from it.Failure is like gravity12:11: Failure is like gravity. It is a force and fact of nature. It is inexorable and unavoidable, and it's not a strong force of nature. It's a weak force of nature, but it is the kind of phenomenon that I think we're dealing with. The value of failure02:41: What failure almost always is: reality's way of telling you that you weren't as smart as you thought you were, you were conducting an experiment all along, and it's reality that's telling you what you didn't know but thought you did. So, it's got some value for sure. How can we embrace failure without being overwhelmed by it and use it to improve the odds of success25:21: How can you both accommodate the likelihood of failure but not be overwhelmed by it, not ignore it, but manage through it and, more importantly, perhaps manage with it because failure is a little bit like the coal that holds the diamond; there's insight in every failure. There is something of value that is there to be mined if you have the humility to acknowledge it and the tenacity to go after it. And to that extent, I like this notion of thinking of initiative and action as chances to improve your odds that the experiments you're conducting are more likely than otherwise to prove successful.

Kelley Baker AKA The Angry Filmmaker is an author, filmmaker, and music aficionado. Music and music documentaries are a common point of discussion whenever we get together, so we thought a great double feature to discuss would be It Might Get Loud and The Other F Word. How can a good documentary humanize a myth or a god? On the surface, a good documentary brings you into a world you know little about. You see how people live and the choices they make. But on a deeper level, the humanization or elevation of a subject reveals a message that evolves and instructs in new ways as you get older. In this conversation, Kelley and I talk about what we've learned this time around watching these films, specifically relating to art, commerce, the pursuit and obsession of craft, and the price we pay as artists and humans. One final note before diving in to the conversation, it's incredibly powerful to not only watch a film you otherwise wouldn't, but to listen to what that film means to someone else. I am not a father, so Kelley's perspective, as both father and grandfather, helped me to see *The Other F Word* differently, through his eyes. I hope this conversation does the same for you.

Today we speak to...Jack Grisham Jack Grisham (born July 22, 1961). He is the vocalist for the punk rock band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), which emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles hardcore punk rock scene, Which is described as being Punk hardcore. punk anarcho-punk deathrock and horror punk. We're not talking about Abba!An agnostic libertarian, Grisham challenges some of the "cult" like practices in today's groups and encourages you to think for yourself, live without fear, and tap the resource of power that resides within us all. Jack an author, a front-man, an actor, and a "two-bit" carny hypnotist. As a vocalist for T.S.O.L., and the Joykiller, he's released close to twenty full-length records and toured all over the world. Jack has been blamed for enlightening, and corrupting the moldable minds of our youth for years—he has also been credited for influencing many of the top bands of today. As an author he's released three books, all to mostly favorable reviews—no one says Jack is a horrible writer, it's just that he brings the horrible to life with such skill that at times you practically need to be sedated to read his prose. 'An American Demon', 'Untamed' and 'Code Blue a Love Story' have all burned their ways into the scary netherworld of the human psyche. As an actor, Jack plays himself, a lovable con-man that you can't help to root for—'Suburbia', 'Let It Rock', 'Punks Not Dead', 'American Hardcore', 'Rage', 'Urban Struggle' and 'The Other F-Word' have all been graced with his almost-as-large-as-life screen presence. Grisham has been clean and semi-serene since 1989. He gives motivational talks all over the USAYou can be sure that whatever Jack is involved in it is sure to challenge the senses and inflame the boundaries of what is decent and tame.  Help us Keep Tom going – please donate a few bucks/quid/sheckels here at Paypal: Gilwriter@hotmail.co.uk See us every Friday at zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88215498348 Zoom ID 882 1549 348 password Tom

Bored and tired of the worship and glorification of success, Sam West founded the Museum of Failure in Sweden last summer, to take away the stigma of failure and instead see it as an integral part of progress. The Museum of Failure has come to Downtown Los Angeles where the Other F Word team met with Sam to tour the exhibit and explore the collection of over 130 failed products and services from all over the world.  From a rental sex doll to Trump University, from Swedish Fish flavored Oreos to The Betamax, failure is highlighted and celebrated. With wit, humor, and intelligence, Sam articulates his views on failure and its role in learning, combating the norm of manufactured perfection and allowing for more freedom for authenticity.
