About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Hi everyone. What's something literally billions of people use every day, whether at home, work, or someplace else? That's right, the Internet. And what's something people have to be concerned about when they use the Internet? Yes, cyberattacks! My guest today, Craig Taylor, is an expert on cybersecurity. And, while Craig says cyberattacks are definitely something to be concerned about, he also believes the need for improved cybersecurity is creating lots of opportunities for job, career, business, and investment seekers. On this episode, Craig covers such topics as (1) how cyberattacks have changed over the last, roughly 15 years, (2) whether or not there is much difference around the globe in terms of vulnerability to cyberattacks, (3) some basic actions companies and individuals can take to lessen their risk of cyberattacks, and (4) what he sees changing in the world of cybersecurity through the rest of this decade. Most importantly, Craig lays out the myriad opportunities that are there today and tomorrow for those who get involved in some aspect of cybersecurity. In fact, Craig says the field is so wide open right now that he refers to it as "the Wild West." He also goes on to provide some tips for those who are interested in identifying and pursuing some of these opportunities. Now a bit about Craig. Craig Taylor is a 25-year veteran of cybersecurity. He has been a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) since 2001. Nearly 45 years ago, Billy Starr lost his mother, an uncle, and a cousin, all to cancer. Looking for a purpose and outlet for his grief, he and a small circle of friends decided to take a long bike ride across most of the state of Massachusetts, while raising money for cancer research. That first “event,” in 1980, raised just over $10,000. But that was just beginning, and through the years since, Billy has stayed with this idea, growing it into the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), which is now the country's largest sports fundraiser by far, with proceeds going to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The money raised in this summer's 2024 edition will put the PMC past the $1 billion mark in total dollars raised – an incredible accomplishment. In this Blue Sky episode, Billy shares reflections on his motivation and how working on the PMC “revealed skills” he didn't realize he had. You'll also learn more about this event – the riders, the volunteers, and funders – who make it so special for everyone involved. Billy Starr approaches his work with infectious drive and optimism and this all comes through in his conversation with Bill. Chapters: 01:18 The History of Athletic Fundraising The discussion shifts to the evolution of athletic fundraising events like runathons, walkathons, and bikeathons, highlighting the origin and growth of these events and their impact on charitable causes. 02:47 Pan-Mass Challenge Origins The focus is on the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC), its founder Billy Starr, and the motivation behind starting this bikeathon for cancer research, tracing back to the personal losses that inspired the event's creation. 04:29 Billy Starr's Journey and Early PMC Years Billy Starr shares insights into his early experiences with fundraising for cancer research, the challenges faced during the initial PMC events, and the gradual growth of the event over the years. 15:22 PMC Fundraising Milestones The significant fundraising achievements of the PMC, including the journey towards raising $1 billion for Dana Farber, are highlighted, showcasing the impact of collective efforts over the years. 21:11 Partnership with Dana Farber The longstanding relationship between the PMC and Dana Farber, the significance of supporting cancer research and treatment, and the impact of fundraising efforts on advancing medical programs are discussed, highlighting the mutual benefits of the collaboration. 29:01 Creating Connections with Families at Dana Farber Discover how the Pan Mass Challenge introduces families to the event and riders, showing support and solidarity with families undergoing cancer treatment at Dana Farber. 34:05 Emotional Impact at Mile 85 Experience the emotional power of Mile 85 at the Pan Mass Challenge, where images of children fighting cancer serve as a poignant reminder of the cause and the progress made in cancer research. 46:11 Unity and Good Intentions at PMC Explore the sense of unity and shared purpose at the Pan Mass Challenge.

"If I have to wash and return your Tupperware, I am now super stressed. I am so worried about the Tupperware." Let the Boston Marathon episodes begin! First up: a panel I moderated at the Oofos pop-up on Boylston Street called "Project Pink: Recover with Purpose." This panel was about running, about cancer, about hard stuff, and about resilience. We heard from Anne Keane, who is living with metastatic breast cancer, and was about to run her third Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. Dr. Nancy Lin, the associate chief of breast oncology at Dana-Farber, talked about whether runners are the best or worst patients, and talked about where fundraising dollars actually go. Maureen Key, the senior manager of performance design at Exos, talked about the importance of recovery and mindfulness. And Christine St. Pierre, who has been doing the Pan-Mass Challenge for 18 years now as the captain of Team Duncan, was on hand to convince all of us that we can — and should — do whatever we set our minds to. Thank you to Oofos for having us, and for the longtime partnership and commitment to raising funds for breast cancer research. As professional fundraisers, we often find ourselves playing the role of the “proud beggar”, grateful for every donation we receive, no matter the size. While that is a worthy and admirable approach, it can do a disservice to our participants and to the missions we champion. Our peer-to-peer participants aren't just signing up to walk or ride or run - they are signing up to raise funds in support of a cause close to their hearts. Our responsibility is to understand their goals, empower them with the effective strategies and inspiration to achieve them and challenge them to go even further. In the Season 2 premiere, P2PPF's Marcie Maxwell is joined by Jarrett Collins, CEO of the Pan-Mass Challenge(PMC). Together, we'll discuss how the PMC has grown its bike-a-thon over the past 45 years into a program that today raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world. Jarrett will share how his team fosters a true culture of philanthropy among its riders and how they continuously motivate them to achieve higher fundraising levels. In this episode, we'll also explore:How the PMC is leveraging a major fundraising milestone to drive support in 2024The average lifecycle of a PMC rider - and how they keep them coming back every yearThe power of recognition Mentioned LinksPan-Mass ChallengeOn Social: Facebook, Instagram &Twitter/XStay Connected on LinkedInConnect with JarrettConnect with MarcieConnect with the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum ----Will we see YOU at the 2024 P2P Professional Forum Conference? About Rev. Wendy Page: The Reverend Wendy Page is an Affiliate Minister of First Parish Arlington. She has been a member of First Parish since 1999 and First Parish supported her on her journey into ministry. She is a graduate of Andover Newton Theological School and was ordained in the First Parish Sanctuary in 2017. She is now serving as a Hospice Chaplain for All Care Hospice. She also is a quilter and gardener and sings in the FP choir. Offering and Giving First For the month of November, half of the offering supports the work of Centro de Esperanza (Shelter for Hope) is a migrant family shelter in Sonyata, Mexico, on the Arizona border. The shelter provides a safe refuge for families fleeing gang violence, religious persecution, and dire economic circumstances. In most cases, families have traveled hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to keep their families alive and safe. El Centro provides safe shelter, food, medical care, education, and legal and technical assistance and protects families from drug cartels, human traffickers, and others who would take advantage of them. Centro de Esperanza is unique in that all these families are attempting to seek asylum in the United States through legal channels. The average wait time for a hearing with a U.S. administrator at the border is 4-6 weeks. Currently the shelter can support 30 families with an expansion plan in the next few months for an additional 30 families. The annual operating cost is approximately $100k and the cost of the expansion is approximately $25k. The shelter was started by U.S. citizens in Ajo, Arizona but is managed by co-directors who are Mexican citizens. The remaining half supports the life and work of this Parish. To donate using your smartphone, you may text “fpuu offering” to 73256. Then follow the directions in the texts you receive.
In this season two episode, Generational Gene details the serious risk of colon cancer and his two pronged approach of cycling and weight loss against three related medical issues– obesity, diabetes, and cancer, all of which run in his family. This builds upon our season one episode where Gene described his choice of cycling to help manage blood sugar and hold off diabetes. “Some days it feels like your pedal to save your life,” Gene told us, “and in a lot of ways, you really are.” Now a high school superintendent, Gene is also a former biology teacher. “One of the things I've learned in the last couple years,” he tells us after a short training ride, “is that cellulose and fat tissue is biologically active.” That point is echoed by our medical expert this episode, Dr. Chika Anekwe of Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School, who adds that “the signals that fat cells send out can be carcinogenic, or cancer-causing.” On the dietary/weight-loss front, Gene proudly recounts a story from some years ago where he lost 42 pounds in three months through crash dieting, winning a bet from a close friend. Soon after, though, he reverted to his original weight– like so many other dieters have experienced after initial weight loss. “And that has a lot to do with this concept of the set point,” Dr. Anekwe explains, “No matter what you do to lose that weight, to bring it down, it always wants to go back to that set point.” Challenges abound for Generational Gene on the exercise road, too. Gene participates in the annual Pan Mass Challenge, a 200-mile bike ride across Massachusetts benefiting cancer research at the Dana Farber Institute. But a training accident in the spring kept him off the bike with a hamstring injury for several important weeks. “I just lost control of the bike and then just went down on the road,” he recalls. “And then I saw that the pedal was in the road. And I was like, man, the pedal snapped.” Will Gene have the stamina for the 100-mile Saturday leg of the PMC? Will his new bike pedals support the effort? And how about that long term, often uphill challenge of losing weight for diabetes and cancer prevention? Tune in for chapter two of Generational Gene's body odyssey, as he pushes back against a family history of diabetes and cancer. On today's podcast, his father Steven will talk about the life that Jared led, which while all too short, was full of accomplishments as he brought joy to so many peopleSteven will highlight his family's passion for bicycling which began while Jared was 4 years old. A year before Jared's passing the Branfman's became involved in the Pan Mass Challenge which is a bicycle event that is considered the largest private charity in the world and benefits cancer patients. Since the mid 2000's Team Kermit, which was named for the frog and was Jared's favorite character growing up, has raised over 6 million dollars for research to help so many kids in their individual cancer fights. A good amount of this 6 million dollars has helped cancers very similar to what Jared had, and that if Jared had the benefit of this research back in the early 2000's, he very well might be alive today.

In 2006, Eric and Lonnie Dupre completed the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole. During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes across 550 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean. Eric successfully led his first expedition to the South Pole in 2008, covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now one of only a few Americans in to have skied to both the North and South Poles. In November 2009, Eric returned to Antarctica for the first leg of his world record Save the Poles expedition. This time he completed a 750-mile ski traverse to the geographic South arriving on January 2, 2010. Two short months later he was dropped off at northern Ellesmere Island for a winter-style North Pole Journey. The international team reached the North Pole 51 days later on Earth Day - April 22, 2010. He completed the Save the Poles expedition by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest on October 15th, 2010 becoming the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' within a 365-day period. In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the most cold and hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen's and Waters' trip—dubbed the "Last North Expedition"—is expected to be the last human-powered trek to the North Pole, ever. You Get What You Give, Ask Primal Why By Bill Plock Nov 6, 2022–Denver In 1998, The New Radicals released the song, “You Get What You Give” and it seems to have resonated strongly as a business mantra with premier cycling apparel manufacturer Primal of Denver. As I looked around the room at the Four Seasons conference room during the PrimalBike 2022 gathering a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that between all of the rides represented here, well over $150 million is raised each and every year for a variety of causes; cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, college scholarships, community causes and so much more. Between the rides, tens of thousands of riders explore roads in every corner of America. The reason they were all in Denver? Primal, a thirty-year-old company supplies cycling clothing for all of these rides and the cyclists who spend hours raising money and a lifetime rolling on roads. Thirty years ago, Dave Edwards made some cool cycling t-shirts and sold them out of the back of his car in Moab. They were a hit and one thing has led to another and thousands upon thousands of designs later Primal has evolved into one of cycling's top brands of cycling wear. Each year, Primal invites some of their top customers to meet and discuss the “state of the union” in cycling events and ponder the future, and share ideas on how to improve events and the sport of cycling. This year's attendee's included leaders from MS, RAGBRAI, Bike New York, Pan-Mass Challenge, Outside, and many others. All of the organizations attending, some for-profit and most non-profits, raise enormous money, but so does Primal. Since its inception, Primal has given away over 12 million dollars. Says founder, President/CEO Dave Edwards about the gathering, “the most meaningful part is making connections and sharing knowledge and experiences. We're privileged to work with incredible partners, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to get together in a setting that inspires learning, conversations, and relationship building that makes their events even better while getting more people on bikes.” The Pan-Mass Challenge, in particular, raising $63million in one ride for cancer research leads the peloton of charity. Said President, Jarrett Collins, “Primal is a great partner for the Pan-Mass Challenge because they support many of our teams with high-quality kits, AND they give back to the fundraising efforts of those teams, all in the service of defeating cancer!” The group had break-out sessions focused on discussing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to trends such as gravel, or as Jarrett Collins termed, “unpaved”. Steve Schulz from Cycle Oregon gave us a peek behind the curtains of their Community of Giving (COG) program and the impact their ride has on its communities and how it helps build everything from community centers to improving community relationships. The group took to the streets and rode bikes to further build camaraderie and consider ideas aimed at getting more people on bikes and raising more money. Ken Podziba, President of Bike New York holds the largest one-day ride in the United States, the Five Boro Bike Tour with over 32,000 riders (303 articles about the ride HERE) and said of the conference, “the conference, which was interesting, engaging, informative, and entertaining, provided an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of our country's top bike event organizers. I left Denver with a much greater knowledge of Primal's creative and managerial processes, learning things we can apply to our events, and making some awesome new friends – now that's a successful conference!” If you measure yourself by the peers you attract, Primal has attracted many of the best of the best when it comes to top cycling events and raising money for good causes. You Get What You Give seemed more than obvious at PrimalBike 2022. Aspen unicyclist left his mark on famed Iron Horse Bicycle Classic It's only fitting that Aspen's Mike “Pinto” Tierney is going out “No. 1” in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. Not “No. 1” as in the fastest in the famed race and recreational ride between Durango and Silverton. Nor did he log the most years riding in the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year on Memorial Day Weekend. Instead, he is the guy who has turned heads for tackling the grueling 47-mile ride over two mountain passes exceeding 10,000 feet on one wheel. In Aspen, Tierney is famed for working 40 years on the exalted Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol and for regularly riding his unicycle up Independence Pass and Maroon and Castle Creek roads — and even on a variety of mountain bike trails in the Roaring Fork Valley. In Durango and Silverton, he's known as the crazy dude who rides a one-wheeled cycle with no brakes up and down some of the most challenging passes in Colorado. “A 63-year-old unicycling 50 miles from Durango to Silverton sounds a little crazy. I don't mind being called crazy,” Tierney said. This year's event was his eighth and final Iron Horse. “I was the only unicyclist to do it, ever,” he said. Others started, none finished. He heard of a unicyclist from Cortez who rode the route, just not during the Iron Horse. Unicycles weren't allowed in the event prior to 2005. Rules changed and Tierney jumped at the opportunity — and promptly got humbled. Six unis started. The other riders dropped out along the route. Tierney started with the two-wheeled riders and was quickly left in the dust. One restaurant hung a sign on the door saying, “Free food to Lance Armstrong and any unicyclist that finishes.” By the time Tierney finished, the restaurant was closed for the day because all riders had long since finished. He changed strategy the next time he rode it in 2015. He started an hour early and got the flats north of Durango out of the way. In that and subsequent years, he got used to the racers sweeping by him on lower Coal Bank Pass, then the recreational riders catching him higher up the major ascent. He completes the ride between 6 and 6.5 hours. It's not about finishing fast. It's about finishing on one wheel. Other cyclists marvel at how he can tackle the steep ascents and hair-raising downhills on a cycle with one speed and no brake. He rides a 36-inch wheel. He grinds up with 170mm crank arms and swaps them out to 140mm for the downhills. Over the 45 years since he started riding a unicycle, he's learned to seek the slow cadence of pedal strokes on the downhill. If he cannot maintain it and gets going too quickly, he's got to jump off. He's never had to do it in his eight Iron Horses. While bicycle riders get to coast on the downhills, Tierney still has to work. For Tierney, it was particularly humbling to get accolades in a couple of notable celebrations of the Iron Horse's 50th anniversary. There is a section about him in a book marking the anniversary, “Fiftieth Anniversary, Looking Back Racing Forward” by John Peel. His accomplishments also are included in a special exhibit at Fort Lewis College's Center of Southwest Studies. The exhibit, “Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture,” is on display until spring 2023. This episode originally aired on July 17, 2020.When Billy's mother, Betty, was diagnosed with cancer he decided to return home to Massachusetts instead of leaving for his climbing trip to Nepal. Billy had just graduated from college in Colorado and the world was seemingly his oyster. As his mother's cancer worsened, those free-spirited experiences became less and less important and were ultimately replaced with grief after Betty tragically passed away from cancer in 1974. After floundering a few years and wondering how to process the grief, Billy's desire to “do something” continued to grow. He took action in 1980 by organizing the first Pan-Mass Challenge as a way to make sense of the grief and carry on the legacy of his mother. The challenge would be to ride a bicycle across Massachusetts and raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Foundation. 36 people joined that first year and they raised $10,000. The PMC was born. As founder and executive director of the Pan-Mass Challenge for over 40 years, Billy has grown the PMC into the largest single fundraising event in the country. To date, more than $700 million dollars has been raised, 6,000 riders participate every year with 4,000 volunteers and participation from 200 companies.
