Super excited to announce new guest, Conrad Fisher, to The Story!Music industry Veteran Matt Lindsey (Mel Tillis, Hal Ketchum) was planning a quiet evening at home when he got a call from his friend, legendary music producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Nanci Griffith).“He was very insistent that I come down to a show in town,” Lindsey recalls. “He told me he'd found someone he wanted me to hear. He told me he thought this guy had a big future ahead of him. Once again, Rooney was right.”That was the night Lindsey met Conrad Fisher, a young singer / songwriter from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Fisher had come to Nashville to sit in with Rooney and his Irregulars (a stew of acclaimed session guys like Dan Dugmore, Dave Pomeroy along with acclaimed artists like Tim O' Brien, Pat Alger, Shawn Camp and more).“I loved what he did,” says Lindsey. “His music is so natural. I wanted to work with him immediately.”Indeed, FIsher possesses an immediately likable vocal style, is a fine guitar player skills and brought great original songs to the table. Lindsey and his Ashbrook Recordings partner Jeff Gordon (Elizabeth Cook) wanted to get Fisher into the studio as soon as possible. The result is Fisher's new Trouble With A Hammer, a 7–song collection of 5 originals and 2 covers; Tom Petty's “Walls,” and Waylon Jennings' “You Asked Me To.” On his originals, Fisher draws from a deep well of influences like Buck Owens (on the title track), Don Williams (“Old Lonesome Feeling” and “Better Now”), and even The Monkees (“Baby I've Got You”).Fisher provided vocals, keyboard, guitars, harmonic, percussion and kazoo and recorded the project at the famed Nashville recording studio, The Sound Emporium. Other noted musicians joining in were Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion), Russ Pahl (steel guitar/electric guitar), Pete Wasner (piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer), Gideon Klein (bass, fiddle) and Beth Fisher (vocals). The Pennyslvania-born singer and songwriter grew up in a Mennonite household where his dad played Johnny Cash records and where the young Fisher learned to love the harmonies of the church he attended. In 2018 Fisher went to Nashville to seek out his songwriting heroes like Roger Cook (“I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing”), Dickey Lee (“She Thinks I Still Care”), Dallas Frazier (“Elvira”), and Bill Anderson (“Tip of my Fingers”), among others.Still based in Pennsylvania, Fisher is an accomplished carpenter and spends time in his workshop building things for his family and friends. You can find Conrad and his projects here:Website: http://conradfishermusic.comYoutube: http://www.youtube.com/conradfisherFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ConradFisherMusic/Insta: https://www.instagram.com/conradfishermusicFind The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

You always remember your first! For EarthWorks that's Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem PA. It was the first place that EarthWorks fertilizer was ever spread. This took place before Rodger Zellner joined the team as golf course superintendent. When we first met Rodger, he had a pretty good idea of how to grow grass. After walking him through the EarthWorks program, that was being used on the property, we got the feeling that we may not hear from him again. As Rodger tells the story he would fertilize by sight – a technique that always worked for him. After starting his new job, he found himself very busy and realized that he hadn't gotten to fertility - then he also realized that he didn't need to! So, we heard from him again asking us what it was we had been doing. Today he is a biological soil management believer!Rodger is a great success story in the golf course management business. He started at Green Pond CC 2 twenty-five years ago as the golf course superintendent. Green Pond is a busy, beloved public golf course in Bethlehem PA. It isn't known for its big budget or Augusta type conditioning, yet it is always in great shape and has a very loyal clientele. As the years passed, Rodger moved up in the club first to General Manager and then to President and Chief Operating Officer. Now he runs the daily operations of the club. Rodger walked us through his career, an inspirational story of perseverance in an industry that can sometimes be tough on the strongest of us.

Now, in the tail end of 2021, discourse about restorative justice and public safety lack imagination. We tend to “do what we've always done.” NYU Historian Nicole Eustace brings us the story of the search for justice following the 1722 murder of a Native American man at the hands of two White men. Covered With Night is a detailed history of how the Pennyslvania colony leaders had to learn to restore the peace – or face war – with the Five Nations. in particular, we bear witness to how the colonists never truly understood the peoples of the Haudenosaunee Confederation. In this month's book club, we read a deep history of the fallout of a murder in the Penn colony. In this history, we learn that our laws have been around shorter than we care to remember and see alternative ways of coming to justice that have existed and thrived. A powerful tail of how we, as peoples, can live together with more equity and justice – how restorative justice has worked in the world, how it could again. If only we can listen and learn.

Jody Strittmatter was one of Pennsylvania’s most highly coveted wrestlers coming out of Cambria Heights High School in 1996. When Mountain Cat wrestling Coach Pat Pecora out-recruited some of the most powerful NCAA Division I schools in the country and got Mr. Strittmatter to become a Mountain Cat, it turned out that the final piece of the 1999 National Championship wrestling team puzzle was in place. After red-shirting as a true freshman in 1996-97, Mr. Strittmatter burst onto the Division II wrestling scene and compiled a 44-2 overall record and an 18-1 dual meet record on his way to winning an East Region title and a National Championship at 118 lbs. in his first year of collegiate wrestling His 24 pins broke Carlton Haselrig’s previous school-record of 19 set in 1986-87, while his 37 regular season victories and his 44 total victories both broke school records in his weight class and still stand today. In most cases, that would be a season tough to top. However, 1998-99 would be even better. Mr. Strittmatter, who moved to 125 lbs., posted an impressive 43-1 overall record and a perfect 23-0 dual meet record. He won championships at the West Virginia University Open in November and the prestigious and Division I-dominated Midlands Open at Northwestern University in December. Just over two months later, Mr. Strittmatter won another regional title and was named the National Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after winning his second straight National Championship. In the process, Pitt-Johnstown claimed its second NCAA Division II National Championship in three years by holding off the University of Nebraska-Omaha in its home gym. In two seasons at Pitt-Johnstown, Mr. Strittmatter had an 87-3 record. His .967 winning percentage is second only behind Carlton Haselrig. Mr. Strittmatter also proved he was a true student-athlete by earning First-Team National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team honors in both 1998 and 1999 as a Biology/Pre-Medicine major. Following the 1999 season, Mr. Strittmatter took his talents to Division I national power University of Iowa and became a two-time Big-Ten Champion and a two-time All-American with a third-place finish in 2000 and a national runner-up finish in 2001. He also earned his second team national championship when the Hawkeyes won the Division I title in 2000. Mr. Strittmatter was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006, the District 6 Hall of Fame in 2007, and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010. Mr. Strittmatter, a native of Ebensburg, Pa., will marry Stephanie Blackstone this August. He, along with former Iowa teammate Eric Juergens, co-founded Young Guns Wrestling Club in 2002. Mr. Strittmatter currently runs Young Guns practices in Pennsylvania with the help of his brothers, John and Joey. Young Guns has grown to become one of Pennyslvania’s premier wrestling clubs and has gained recognition nationally.

Dr. Ian Krantz, M.D., a pediatrician and geneticist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Perelman School of Medicine at The University of Pennyslvania, and Sarah Raible is a Genetic Counselor and Clinical Director, Center for Cornelia de Lange Syndrome & Related Diagnoses, and Senior Genetic Counselor, Division of Human Genetics at CHOP, discussed their work and the upcoming Philadelphia Concours d'Elegance benefit.  Tickets are available at the door and online now at  www.coolcarsforkids.org They discussed genetic diagnosis, research and treatment at CHOP, the leading hospital for genetic issues, drawing families and patients from across the globe.    Developmental disorders are the leading cause of infant mortality and childhood disability and 7% of children born in the U.S. have cognitive disability and/or structural birth defect.  Conditions include visible or detectable issues such as Down Syndrome  and heart defects.  Over 400 babies are born each day in the U.S. with a congenital anomaly – and many families know before birth and seek treatment.  Other conditions do not present until a child fails to reach a milestone in development.   They described the programs and services offered and stressed the need for funding their vital research. They spoke about Cool Cars for Kids, a non-profit they organized with legendary collector Mike Tillson, one of the country's most highly regarded authorities on classic and sports automobiles, who founded Tillson Motorcars over 35 years ago.  Mike Tillson founded the Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance, a model for the Philadelphia Concours d'Elegance.  Supported by local high end car dealers, the event, June 14th and 15th at the Simeone Automotive Museum, will celebrate Bentley on its 100th Anniversary, as well as other rare vehicles.  In addition to the ‘Concourse' selection, car enthusiastic may show their ‘cool' car, cars that are rare, modified or just loved in the Corral.  Friday, June 14th will be the Gala sneak preview with Coach Dick Vermeil, whose granddaughter was treated at CHOP, attending and signing bottles of his wines.   Te following day will be the general admission family friendly Concourse and Corral. There will be kids activities throughout the day and refreshments.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is it.  Here we complete the 26th mile of the Chirdonathon, cross the finish line, and receive the oxygen and hydration we so desperately require. (I know, the analogy doesn’t really work, but I’m going with it.  Except not anymore.  You’re welcome.) Jeff recently moved to Ohio. Greg apparently has opinions of Ohio drivers. And Jeff, in a whirlwind of quotable genius, utters a series of bumper sticker phrases pointing a harsh finger at the state whose motto should be, “Even With God, All Things Are Assuredly NOT Possible.”  Ohio: Barely Not Juggalo. My fiancé: Ohio is killing her. Ohio: Count the cars that don’t have a bumper.  At all. Ohio: If your seat belt clicks and your car hasn’t exploded, you can drive that death trap. Pennyslvania, and Pittsburgh in particular, wasn’t left unscathed. Heather here coins the phrase: The Pittsburgh Left: You Must Hate Your Passenger. (Greg agrees.) And to complete the topical smorgasbord of non sequitur cultural taboo, we discuss Prince, Bill Cosby, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, white rappers, and, yet again, Frankenhooker. Fun. Times. We present to you, “I Drink 2 4get…(Chirdonathon, pt 7).” And the music…still Prince.  We’ll begin with “Pope,” and end with a killer live version of, “Alphabet Street.”  And in the episode you’ll hear, “Gett Off,” “CREAM,” and “Sexy Mother Fucker.”  Shaking that ass, shaking that ass, shaking that ass. It’s still hard to imagine he’s gone. -G

This is the Q&A portion of Matthew Lamanna's talk, The Origin of Modern Birds. Matthew C. Lamanna, Ph.D. Assistant Curator Section of Vertebrate Paleontology Carnegie Museum of Natural History Birds are today's most diverse group of land-living backboned animals. They comprise more than 10,000 species. But their origins remain poorly understood. Lamanna's expeditions have unearthed dozens of exquisitely-preserved avian fossils – many of them including soft-tissues such as feathers and skin – from ~120 million-year-old sediments in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province, China. More recently, Lamanna and his team have conducted expeditions to latest Cretaceous exposures in the James Ross Basin of the Antarctic Peninsula in search of what may be the world's most ancient neornithines. Dr. Lamanna studied at Hobart College and the University of Pennyslvania. He serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lamanna has extensive paleontological field experience in Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, China, Egypt, and the United States. In 2000, he co-led a research team that unearthed Paralititan stromeri, one of the largest dinosaurs yet discovered, in Egypt's Bahariya Oasis. More recently, Lamanna served as chief scientific advisor to Carnegie Museum of Natural History's $36M dinosaur exhibition, Dinosaurs in Their Time, which opened in 2008. Recorded on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
