Patrick Vanraes is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Antwerp whose research into liquid plasmas has led him to believe that we have radically, completely, totally misunderstood what it means for something to be “plasma.” All presentations on the subject begin with a rote recitation of the fact that plasma is a fourth state of matter - solid, liquid, gas, then plasma. But Patrick makes the point that this is an incomprehensible perspective, because the phase change between solid - liquid - gas is one of motion. Each phase has more degrees of freedom than the previous one, and so reveals different macroscopic qualities of the substance. The transition to plasma is far stranger. Some component of it does include a greater range of motion, as the electron shells of the atoms bloom away from their ionic cores. But far more important is the structural, chemical changes that accompany plasma, which is exactly what leads Patrick to the conclusion that perhaps plasma isn't some strange exotic kind of matter - it's some latent capacity of matter that's far more ordinaryMAKE HISTORY WITH US THIS SUMMER:https://demystifysci.com/demysticon-2025PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go!00:05:13 Cosmos and Plasma Complexity00:11:41 Defining Plasma Beyond Ionized Gas00:17:07 Applications and Implications of Plasma Understanding00:21:52 Plasma in Laboratory and Experimentation00:24:27 Plasma Formation in Gas vs. Liquid00:26:31 Plasma Research Fields00:31:15 Definition and Nature of Plasmas00:39:01 Phase Transitions and Plasma States00:42:11 Ionization and Conductivity in Metals00:48:31 Atomic Structure and Misconceptions00:49:54 Realism in Scientific Models00:52:30 Complexities in Education and Models00:55:38 Redefining Plasma and Conductivity01:00:07 Characteristics of Plasma01:11:05 Plasma Waves and Oscillations01:15:36 Particle Misconceptions01:20:59 Material Representation in Physics01:23:30 Stars and Material Conceptions01:29:38 Quasi-Particles and Limitations01:31:30 Beyond Models: Reality vs. Philosophy01:36:13 Phonon Theory of Liquids01:39:12 Relationship Between Phonons and Specific Heat01:40:25 The Temperature Dependency of Specific Heat01:43:35 Conceptualizing Quasi-Particles and Reality01:50:16 Exploring Underlying Structures in Physics01:57:05 The Philosophical Underpinning of Scientific Theories02:03:34 Plasma Physics, Redefined02:08:16 The Role of Skepticism and Prediction in Science02:12:26 Building Scientific Community and Collaboration02:16:50 Modeling a New Scientific Approach02:17:28 Upcoming Presentations on Plasma Models #plasmaphysics, #astrophysics, #experimentalphysics, #electricuniverse, #theoreticalphysics, philosophypodcast, #sciencepodcast, #longformpodcast ABOUS US: Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. "Don't be afraid to ask questions early and often when working with engineering firms or general contractors on your water treatment program... Getting it right the first time is the easiest and least painful way to a long-term successful water treatment program." – Walker Burnette In this episode of the Scaling Up H2O podcast, host Trace Blackmore sits down with Walker Burnette, Water Treatment Consultant at Southeastern Laboratories to explore the importance of early involvement in water treatment projects for new and expanding facilities. Together, they uncover essential lessons, challenges, and best practices that can make or break long-term success in industrial water management.   A Chance Encounter That Sparked a Career  Walker Burnette's journey into the water treatment industry began unexpectedly when he reconnected with Steve Tuning, a lifelong family friend and his father's college roommate, at his former workplace. This chance meeting led to a conversation that launched his career in water treatment. Now, Walker's former employer has become his client, showcasing the unique blend of personal history and professional growth that shaped his path.  Bridging Water Treatment Gaps in Construction  Walker Burnette addresses the common oversight of water treatment during new and expanded construction projects. In North Carolina's fast-growing landscape, Walker has seen firsthand how rushed timelines can lead to missed steps in planning. Sharing lessons from successes and pitfalls, this discussion aims to highlight essential practices to ensure water treatment is prioritized and integrated effectively from the start.  What steps do you take to set yourself up for success in the bid process?  Walker Burnette emphasizes the importance of understanding a facility's unique requirements when bidding on water treatment projects. Recognizing that each system may need specialized solutions, he advises focusing on value rather than competing solely on price. While not every bid will be successful, prioritizing quality and comprehensive proposals leads to long-term success and better client outcomes.  Why do you need to have relationships with people?  Walker Burnette highlights that building strong relationships is key in the competitive world of water treatment project bidding. Helping clients understand the value behind different approaches can set you apart. When clients receive various bids, confusion can arise about the differing strategies. Having a trusted relationship allows you to step in, clarify the benefits, and guide them through making an informed decision. Establishing a reputation with engineering firms and past collaborators can often lead to winning projects for the right reasons—trust and proven expertise. Prioritizing Communication for Water Treatment Success  Clear communication and proactive planning in water treatment projects is essential. He recommends reviewing P&IDs (Piping and Instrument Diagrams) early to find cost-saving opportunities and streamline processes. Staying engaged throughout the project ensures inspections and coordination, preventing last-minute issues and promoting smooth execution.  Checklist for Water Treatment Project Planning and Execution:  1. Identify System to be Treated: List systems requiring treatment and needed equipment/chemicals.  2. Verify Lead Times: Confirm equipment lead times and communicate any delays to the end user.  3. Set Project Timelines: Track key delivery dates and installation milestones.  4. Plan for Pipe Cleaning/Passivation: Ensure pipes are flushed or treated before startup to avoid issues.  5. Communicate with Stakeholders/End Users: Keep the end user informed and ensure all steps are completed for a smooth project launch.  The Critical Step of Passivation  Passivation is presented as one of the most important phases of commissioning new systems. Walker and Trace discuss why passivation is often overlooked, the consequences of skipping it, and how to effectively advocate for this essential step.   Considering All Stakeholders and EH&S in Water Treatment Projects  Understanding the needs of all stakeholders, including engineers, contractors, operators, and end-users, is essential in water treatment projects. Involving the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) early ensures chemicals are compatible, stored correctly, and disposed of safely. Walker emphasizes addressing these considerations from the start positions water treatment professionals as proactive consultants, avoiding last-minute issues and disruptions to project timelines.  Integrating New Equipment in Existing Facilities  Adding new equipment to an existing facility requires careful planning. Unlike new buildings, end-user involvement is higher as the facility is already operational. He stresses that new systems often need isolation and separate treatment before integration, as simply connecting and activating them can lead to issues. Proper preparation and communication are key to successful integration.  Join the Conversation  Have any thoughts on today's episode? Moran & Michael Lennington  Drop by Drop with James In today's episode, I'm on my soapbox. My soapbox topic is…conductivity versus TDS…or Total Dissolved Solids. You might have expected something a little meatier, but conductivity and TDS are often used interchangeably. FAR too often they are. They are NOT the same thing though. Conductivity and TDS may be RELATED, but they measure two COMPLETELY different things. Conductivity measures the ability of a water solution to conduct an electrical current. It is quick and easily automated, only requiring a conductivity probe and a meter. Total Dissolved Solids or TDS, on the other hand, is the concentration of dissolved solids in a water solution. Measuring the TDS requires evaporating a volume of water to dryness and weighing the solids that remain. TDS takes a lot more time and labor to perform than a conductivity test.  So how are conductivity and TDS related? The conductivity of water is determined by the type and concentration of dissolved solids. Low TDS solutions typically have lower conductivities. High TDS solutions typically have higher conductivities. There can be a relationship between the two. If the water quality is consistent, conductivity can provide a practical way to monitor the TDS, but this relationship should be verified regularly.  Some may be thinking, “But my handheld meter displays the answer in TDS. What gives?” Your handheld meter is doing math internally to convert from conductivity, which is measuring, to TDS. It is not ACTUALLY measuring TDS. As a rule of thumb in the industrial water samples we often see, the actual TDS is typically 65-75% of the measured conductivity. This can vary, however, depending upon the ions in the water. We continue our in-depth conversation with Tom Tinney, Product Specialist and equipment guru at AquaPhoenix Scientific diving deeper into the technical aspects of multimeter troubleshooting. This episode is packed with practical tips designed to help you navigate the often-confusing world of diagnostics and electrical troubleshooting. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just getting started, Tom's hands-on advice will guide you through common troubleshooting challenges so you can improve your accuracy and efficiency in the field. Missed Part 1? No worries! You can catch up on Episode 390 to get the foundation before diving into this advanced discussion. How Can You Avoid Fake Signals? Ever wonder why you're getting water meter readings when the system isn't running? Tom breaks it down. If low-voltage sensor wires run too close to high-voltage AC wires, electrical interference can mimic a water meter signal, leading to fake readings. Pro tip: Keep the wires separated by at least 12 inches, and if they must cross, do so at a 90-degree angle. "Running them through the same conduit isn't just a bad idea; it's a code violation," Tom advises. The Troubleshooting Tool, You Didn't Know You Needed: A Paperclip That's right—Tom channels his inner MacGyver with this simple tool. "When I troubleshoot, I always bring paper clips," he shares. They're perfect for quick fixes, especially when dealing with short circuits or stripped wires. How Long Can a Conduit Run Be on a Water Meter? Tom recommends keeping conduit runs short and efficient: ● Water meters: up to 1,000 feet ● Conductivity sensors: 200 feet max ● Amplified pH sensors: up to 1,000 feet ● Non-amplified pH sensors: Stick to 20 feet or less for optimal performance. Pro Tip: Save Your Multimeter's Battery Life You don't need to keep your meter on "Resistance" all the time. Switching it to Volts AC, Volts DC, or simply turning it off can extend your battery life significantly. Troubleshooting with the Experts: Top 4 Calls Tom Tinney shares the top troubleshooting calls he receives: The 1575 Controller Mystery ● Issue: Controller reset every time the relay activated. ● Fix: A simple switch adjustment from 230V to 115V solved the issue. The Miswired Outlet ● Problem: Controller shutting off when a relay turned on. ● Fix: Rewriting the outlet, which had reversed hot and neutral wires. Destroyed Chlorine Sensor ● Issue: Excessive flow and pressure destroyed the sensor.  ● Lesson: Always stick to the manufacturer's guidelines and communicate them clearly to plumbers and electricians. Competing Controllers Failing ● Issue: Controllers from different manufacturers failing simultaneously. ● Fix: The culprit was a faulty sensor and excessive aeration. Who Should Be Using Remote Communications? While it may seem logical to apply remote communications to your highest-value accounts, Tom suggests starting with smaller ones. Remote communication technology can save time and money by allowing you to troubleshoot remotely, and the investment often pays off with just one saved trip a year. Troubleshooting Leaks in an MPT Thread When it comes to troubleshooting leaks in an MPT Thread, maintenance is key. First, make sure you clean your sensors at least once a season, or even more frequently, similar to how you maintain a cooling tower. When replacing the boiler sensor in an MPT Thread (an angled thread going into an angled pipe), don't screw it in until it "clicks"—this can cause leaks. Instead, tighten the sensor by hand. Once it's snug, use a wrench to turn it only ½ to ¾ of a turn more. If you've already got a leak, chances are you've overtightened it. Don't try to fix a leak by cranking it tighter—at that point, you've already gone too far. The Blackmore Method This formula answers the age-old question: How do I know what to set my biocide pre-bleed on? If you know the system volume, incoming makeup water conductivity, and how much you evaporate every minute, this equation will tell you exactly what to set your pre-bleed to: A Fun Fact: The Cooling Tower Scene in Die Hard Did you know? The blue box with the two dials on the wall in the Die-Hard cooling tower scene was one of Tom's old controllers! Tom even tracked down the Fox Studios building manager and discovered that it was there from 1988 through 2012. How cool is that? The Reservoir Effect? In the debate between which is a better biocide at higher pHs, chlorine or bromine, the Reservoir Effect is an important concept to consider. When sodium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, or even calcium hypochlorite mixes with water, the target product they produce is hypochlorous acid or HOCl. This hypochlorous acid is subject to a dissociation which converts some of it to the hypochlorite ion or OCl-, which is a weaker biocide than hypochlorous acid. The pH of the water has a major impact upon how much this dissociation happens. That's at the heart of the whole chlorine versus bromine debate because the chlorine chemistry dissociates more at a lower pH than bromine does. This means more hypochlorous acid is converted to the weaker hypochlorite ion at a lower pH than hypobromous acid is converted to the hypobromite ion at the same pH. This concept is used to justify using bromine chemistry at higher pHs versus chlorine. But is this argument as simple as this? I propose that the Reservoir Effect muddies the waters a bit. I just talked about how the hypochlorous acid dissociates to the weaker hypochlorite ion. This dissociation between the two is a very tight and fast ratio. It's an equilibrium reaction. As soon as the hypochlorous acid is consumed in the battle against unwanted microbiological activity, some of the weaker hypochlorite ions are quickly converted BACK to the stronger hypochlorous acid form. This is the Reservoir Effect because even though the hypochlorite ion is weaker, it is waiting there to turn back into the stronger hypochlorous acid very quickly when needed. Sort of like the Incredible Hulk. Bruce Banner is the mild-mannered hypochlorite ion just going about his day, but when push comes to shove, he bulks up and turns green…although green isn't a good thing in a cooling tower, but you get the point. Now, there are certainly many other factors when comparing chlorine chemistry to other alternatives in a cooling water system, but the Reservoir Effect is one that I don't think many people know about nor consider. Think about it. Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! H2O Events Calendar where we've listed every event Water Treaters should be aware of by clicking HERE.

Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. We talk about his nascent passion for perfumes, why people are so reluctant to smell things, and the overlap between smell, resonance, and consciousness. Dr Simon Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Paragraf, explains why the UK's semiconductor strategy doesn't do enough to support the country's microchip industry, how wonder material graphene could revolutionise electronics, and how semiconductors have become less of a focus for the Silicon Fen area.  Cambridge-based Paragraf specialises in graphene-based electronics, a material with highly promising capabilities that could prove to be the perfect alternative to silicon in electronic devices due to its conductivity and power efficiency. It has raised more than $85m in funding. In this episode, Thomas – who has a background in physics, engineering and material science – explains how graphene could produce chips that "operate 1,000 times faster than today's computers". Elsewhere, he delves into the “interesting process” of Paragraf acquiring US chip firm Cardea Bio, which closed in May 2023, and takes aim at the government's lack of clarity when it comes to a long-term semiconductor vision.

Welcome to the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast. As water treaters, we have a multitude of tools at our disposal, but it's crucial to understand what we're testing for and how our tests work on a basic level. In this week's episode of Pinks and Blues, we're delving into the intricacies of water treatment by focusing on the difference between two important measurements: Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Conductivity. TDS and Conductivity are crucial metrics in water treatment, as they provide key information about the quality and purity of the water we're treating. However, many water treaters don't fully understand the nuances of these measurements, which can limit the effectiveness of their treatment methods. On this episode of Pinks and Blues, we'll explore the science behind TDS and Conductivity, and how these measurements can be used to optimize water treatment processes. Whether you're a seasoned water treatment professional or just starting out, you'll gain valuable insights and knowledge that will help you scale up your water treatment expertise. Bottom line: Get ready to expand your understanding of water treatment and join us as we explore the critical difference between TDS and Conductivity.   Timestamps Upcoming Events for Water Treatment Professionals [1:00] Periodic Water Table With James McDonald [4:30] Trace Blackmore answers your Pinks and Blues questions about the difference between TDS and Conductivity [6:00]   Quotes “Where you take the temperature really does matter.” - Trace Blackmore “The solution to pollution is dilution…or said another way ‘The solution to concentration is dilution'.” - Trace Blackmore “Calcium Carbonate (equation) - a water treater's nemesis, because it impedes heat most often.”  - Trace Blackmore   Connect with Scaling UP! In this podcast by Dr. David Snyder, he demonstrates how mind control works. Listen as to how he explains the process of mind control through connection, influence and rapport. Standout Quotes: “The first thing we have to do is we have to do exactly what those metronomes do. We have to train. We have to synchronize our neurology with the neurology of another person and know that we have it.” “I don't visualize anything. This is not something you make happen. This is something you allow to happen.” “Don't try it and don't look for it. That's the other thing. The minute we try to look for it, we block it, because we're, it's we're looking over here, it's coming over here.” Key Takeaways: The Metronome Metaphor is all about the connection and synchronization between people. In order to be able to do that connection with other people, you must be trained. You should also know once you start feeling something special. The connection happens naturally when you allow it. No visualization is needed. Once you feel that sensation, the connection between the people, their neurology and yours are the same. The sensation varies depending on the people. It is not always the same for everyone. As for Dr. David Snyder, he usually feels relaxed every time it happens. We should just wait for the connection to happen. It is not something you should look for nor something that you should force to try. It is something that comes naturally. Once your mind perceives that you want access to the information, it will happen faster and faster. Episode Timeline: [00:11] Intro / Metronome Metaphor [02:07] Coherence / Kinesthetic Rapport [03:48] The neurology cannot resist itself. What's up to my sparkling space rays and rough n' ready rhythm robins! Welcome back to the BNP everyone and thank you for joining! This week's episode is a solo meandering affair, a bit of a throwback ep. I do hope you enjoy the goodly amount of zany audio tidbits, because they took me forever to make. But I do it for ye because I love ye. Topics include a heartening and uplifting interaction at the filtered water kiosk in S. Phx (NOT around the water cooler. No no no. This is a kiosk on the corner of Buckeye and 18th Ave and it is not a water cooler chat spot, I assure you). Remember to stay human everyone! Also discussed is the evolving situation in Mariupol with far right Ukrainian nationals harboring English speaking Santa's helpers who are equipping them with fancy shmancy NATO tech, and the frantic daredevil helicopter evacs to get them out. It begs the question: who are these mysterious Anglo speakers with pricy equipment and what are they hiding?  I also take a hot moment to rip into the slovenly hell gopher himself, Donald J. Trump, and his fucked comments at a recent rally about immigration. Next I dive into the latest FOIA drop of 100,000+ documents via a Vanity Fair investigation that reveal systematic fuckery at the NIH, shady Eco Health Alliance dealings, and fancy gov't cocktail parties with lobbyists. The docs also expose serious fugazi at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.  Did you know the Chinese government hid a bunch of critical genetic sequences of the virus... at the behest of Tony Fauci and the NIH!?!? They're working together folks. Yikes. Lastly, I tease an upcoming BNP book club book that Dr. Sylvie and I are gonna analyze! You're gonna love it (hint: UFO's and other top secret goodies). Can haz financial support? Mew meow? Help the BNP stay on the air for just $1 per month at patreon.com/noetics. That's 3.3 cents a day. After his own spiritual awakening led him to discover the 4-flowgates for increasing your personal power, Julian wrote Let Go, Let It Flow – The PATH To Peace and Personal Power. This groundbreaking work teaches us how to apply Julian’s Theory of Conductivity in our life and more fully express and share our true gifts with the world. We are infused with abundant energy but unfortunately, we often waste our precious resources. As a result of our mismanagement of our life energy, our life’s work often suffers. Energy is the ability to do work and our life’s work is a measure of how efficiently and effectively we manage our energy. Favorite Success Quote “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need.” Julian’s P.A.T.H. Julian operates his entire life, and wrote his new book around a simple but powerful concept known as “The P.A.T.H.” It is Julian’s belief that in this fast paced hectic world, a world that is constantly trying to distract and derail us from what is truly important this simple, four-step framework is the key to living a truly abundant and fulfilling life. The acronym stands for Presence, Acceptance, Thankfulness, and Helping. 1. Presence Pick up your phone for me. Now scroll through your applications and tell me how many notifications and messages are weighing down your device. It’s a lot, right? This isn’t an accident. In our modern era of iPhones, instant messaging, and unavoidable advertising, the powers at be have made a very conscious effort to keep your focus distracted, your attention captured, and your mind occupied. I’m not talking about the Illuminati or some wild conspiracy theory. I am just talking about the facts. Red Crown Marketing reported that the average adult will be exposed to upwards of 4,000 advertisements per day… and that’s being conservative. And this figure is just talking about paid advertising! It doesn’t even take into account the seemingly endless stream of social media updates, blog posts, and “New Releases” on Netflix. So with all of these different forces vying for your attention, is it any wonder why we live in an ADHD society whose attention span is rapidly decreasing to less than that of a goldfish? Of course not. And this is where we run into problems. Depression and anxiety are at an all-time high, suicide (especially among men) is on the rise, and general dissatisfaction with life continues to soar despite our meteoric advances in technology. And at the end of the day, I believe that the heart of the problem lies in one simple truth. Life is meant to be experienced not observed, and with this constant barrage of attention-stealing garbage, our society has lost the ability to simply sit back and be. So I want to challenge you. I don’t want to challenge you to work harder, approach more women, or exercise more (although you can if you want). No, I want to challenge you to simply be. Take time each and every day for the next ten days to simply enjoy being, to be present and fully alive in the moment. Whether you meditate daily, take part in a “Flow-inducing” activity, or simply walk around in nature, give yourself the gift of being… It might just change your life. 2. Acceptance Life is unpredictable, and as Murphy’s Law states, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” But guess what? It’s ok. Because at the end of the day, whether you believe that life has a purpose or that we are merely ashes and dust, what is done has been done, and all that you can do is to accept it. And when you can learn to accept life, just as it comes, you will experience true freedom. Despite your best efforts, things will happen, tragedy will strike, and pain becomes an inevitable part of existence. But when you accept things as they are, when you can put your best effort forward while resigning responsibility for what you cannot control, you will experience a peace beyond what you thought possible. This peace, however, is only attainable when you are truly willing to accept your circumstances and let go of the outcomes. Yes, there are times where life will challenge you and require you to step up to the plate and swing for all that you are worth. But there are also times where life will ask something even more difficult from you. It will ask you to surrender. It will ask you to accept the flow of life and let go of the outcomes you cannot control. And this is possibly the greatest challenge of all. But if you can master this one simple principle, you will find that, while life may not get easier, you will have the peace to move through any adversity. 3. Thankfulness It is often said that “Laughter is the best medicine”. I must respectfully disagree. In my life, and in the lives of thousands of my clients, I have found that the most powerful “medicine” for any ailment is thankfulness. Because thankfulness is the antidote for fear, doubt, anxiety, depression, and worry. When you are thankful for what you have, you become less stressed about what you need and want. When you are thankful for what you have, no matter how trying the circumstances you are facing, you can face life with a smile knowing that you are blessed. When you are thankful for what you have, you unlock a powerful ability to reframe adversity into opportunity. When you are thankful for what you have and open up to life, life will open up to you and bring more peace and personal power than you ever thought possible. So no matter what you are facing right now, be thankful. It saved my life, and it might just save yours. 4. Helpfulness We live in a funny world. Despite the prevalence of our negative media, which showcases all of the pain and suffering around the world from the slums of Africa to the refugee camps of Syria, our society still manages to focus on itself and complain about “problems” like traffic and slow wifi. And this twisted reality reminds me of an old personal growth adage, “Where focus goes energy flows.” You see, when we are constantly focused on ourselves, our own problems, and our own issues, the problems and struggles are magnified and amplified until they feel overwhelming. But when we take the focus off of ourselves, when we refocus on those around us who are in dire need of help, we gain perspective and power over our problems. While helping others might not cover your car payment, cure your sickness, or reunite you with your lost love, it will help you to remember your blessings and realize just how good your life really is. It will reconnect you with others, help you step back from your own problems, and help you realize that you aren’t doing this journey alone. So I challenge you do help someone else this week. Whether it’s a simple phone conversation to encourage a struggling family member, a few hours spent at a soup kitchen, or simply buying someone’s coffee in line at Starbucks, do something this week to help someone else. You will be amazed at the transformation you will experience in your mindset and life.

Prachi Patel of MRS Bulletin interviews Benjamin C.-K. Tee of the National University of Singapore about an interfacial design for stretchable electronics that uses three-dimensional helical copper micro-interconnects embedded in an elastic rubber substrate. Read the article in APL Materials.TranscriptPRACHI PATEL: Metals are excellent at conducting electricity but not the best at being stretched or bent. For electronics that can be worn or wrapped around curved surfaces, stretchable conductors are key. BENJAMIN TEE: One good example is a smart patch that you can wear to record your heartbeat, or your ECG and so on. PATEL: That’s Benjamin Tee at the National University of Singapore. He and his colleagues have come up with a new way to make stretchable conductors that stay strong and remain highly conductive when stretched to almost twice their length. Their strategy overcomes two main challenges of previous stretchable conductors. TEE: So one approach to make stretchable conductors is to use nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes, graphene. These are one way where people use these particles and coat it onto a stretchable substrate like silicone rubber or polyurethanes.PATEL: Another approach is to use metal thin films. Basically, researchers create wavy serpentine patterns of these films so they can stretch with the substrate. But in both approaches, stretching the materials tends to reduce their conductivity. Plus, the thin materials have lower electrical conductivities than bulk metal. So Tee and his colleagues took a different approach. TEE: We drew inspiration from actually spring-like structures. Spring-like structures are able to withstand strain. If you either stretch on a spring or compress a spring, they return, right? PATEL: They first made a spring using some off-the-shelf copper wire. Then they embedded it in silicone rubber to make it elastic. But that still wasn’t good enough. The spring started changing shape within the rubber after being stretched a few times. TEE: And we found out that the reason was that the interface between metal and rubber needs to be well-matched. If you’re talking about metals you have modulus is extremely high in the gigapascals range whereas rubbers typically have a modulus of megapascal range. There’s a three orders of magnitude difference. So we need a way to make sure that these two interface do not slip. PATEL: And they did that by adding an epoxy to the rubber, which helps bond the metal to the rubber. This did the trick. TEE: We can stretch it over a 1000 times and these springs stay in the same shape as they were after stretching. What’s interesting is that this electrical conductivity does not change because we’re not changing the crystalline structure of the metal. Our approach basically extends the dimension into 3D as opposed to a planar patterned film. We’re exploiting the bulk property of the metal. The other advantage is it can actually stretch more because we’re going into three dimensions. So I think there is certainly a limit to how much we can scale this down if we want to keep the same good electrical properties that we’re talking about. But that being said when you scale them down to about a micron, they actually become softer and so you can have even greater stretchability. So I think a micron or so is sort of where we want to be if you want to capture bulk properties and still retain the stretchability.PATEL: The team’s findings are published in APL Materials. My name is Prachi Patel from the Materials Research Society.

The use of printed electronics is on the rise, and Chris Hunrath from Insulectro is here to talk about how to design for it. Learn about the different applications and design possibilities that are available to PCB designers. The proliferation of more advanced printed electronics materials from polyester film, polycarbonate, to transfer film for fabric and flexible circuitry have enabled interesting new applications for printed electronics. Listen in to learn the latest from Chris Hunrath, an expert in material supplies for circuit board design. Watch the video, click here.  Show Highlights: Insulectro has seen a significant growth in sales of printed electronics products, this is an area of massive growth. Printed Electronics have traditionally been used in RFID along with metal f oils such as anti-theft devices and security access cards - items with conductive inks and membrane touch switches, for example: coffee makers, dishwashers, rear window defoggers, etc. Interesting new applications include: glucose test strips, wearables - sensors of all kinds, automotive, and self darkening windows. Self darkening windows are used in skyscrapers and aeroplanes, silver conductive ink, placing current on the window, giving the user control and saving energy. Printed Electronics is a high-growth area: business doubled every year in the past five years, doing very well in both substrates and inks. Predominant applications driving this uptick in usage: Capacitive Touch switching, in general it saves costs, lighter in weight and has no moving parts (i.e. car dashboards: a lot of work being done on it today) makes it more reliable. The molded structure: print the matte side and ink moves with plastic when molding, circuitry is totally encapsulated in the injection molding process. Ink technology: silver  is used and is cheaper than gold and more conductive; silver flake or conductive particles make it possible to have the ink move with the plastic. Insulectro offers materials for Printed Electronics, some examples: polyester film - trade name Mylar and other brands, polycarbonate, transfer film for fabric and flexible circuitry in wearables. What’s the difference between conventional and printed electronics? Conductivity, and Resistance - know the sheet resistance and use a comparable copper thickness and width. Altium Designer 19 and Tactotek, who do in-mold structural electronics are working on relative design features in Altium. Printed Electronics whiteboard video There are inks that can sense chemistry and can be ion selective i.e. blood glucose, natural gas, carbon monoxide and so forth, Applications in wearables: Neural bypass, can pick up nerve impulses, movement sensors, chemistry sensors and more, and can withstand several washings. Higher silver loading inks can be used in many different applications. Chris shows an example of printed antenna that uses silver inks. Can be used in materials that you couldn’t use in a traditional PCB process.   Conductive ink kits for children - you can draw conductive inks with a pen. Chris shows an example of substrate with high temperature ink, that has a 500-degree operating temperature. Events where you can see examples at the Insulectro booth: IPC Apex in San Diego, DesignCon in Santa Clara and Insulectro typically at IT TechEX. Conductive adhesive is more ideal for components, soldering to printed electronics is very delicate. Screen printing is the main way to print and is very scalable. Printed electronics is easier and cheaper to get started and environmentally more friendly. What use is an F-call? Last week I spent a little time talking about lightning. I discussed how lightning can affect many different things, not just by being a direct hit, but by having a nearby hit, that is, something that is in some way electrically connected to you or your station. We all know that the ground has some level of conductivity, just like air does - the lightning that you see during a thunderstorm is the visualisation of the conductivity of air. In the earth, you don't really see it that clearly, but the same thing happens. Conductivity is measured in Siemens per Meter. Deionised water has a conductivity of about 5.5 micro Siemens per meter, sea water is about 5 Siemens per meter, so, sea water is approximately a million times more conductive than deionised water. Since Siemens is a measure of conductivity and Ohms a measure of resistance, you can convert one into the other as their inverse. A resistor made of 1 cm of seawater at 20C has a resistance of 2 milli Ohm. Ground conductivity is in the order of 1000 times worse than sea water and is typically expressed in milli Siemens per meter. As we're talking about the ground, the conductivity is seasonal, since rain comes and goes, and to add to the mix, this conductivity is frequency dependent. So, In Australia, for a frequency up to 30 kHz, the conductivity varies from 1 to 10 milli Siemens per meter, or 1 cm of ground has a varying resistance between 1 and 10 Ohm. If you look at 1MHz, the conductivity varies much more, from 2 to 50 milli Siemens per meter, depending on where you are, how far you are from the ocean, a river or lake or what the ground is made up of. Back to lightning. Imagine an earth stake next to your shack for your radio and another stake next to your antenna. In a circuit diagram, both of them would show as being connected to earth and you could just look at that and think that all was well with the world. Both are earthed, so you're safe. Unfortunately that's not the case. If you drew the circuit diagram properly there would be a resistor between the two earth stakes. There would also be a conductor, namely your coax between the radio and the antenna. So you have a path of low resistance, the coax, and a parallel path of high resistance, something like 10 kOhm for 10m, between the earth stakes. No points for guessing which one the lightning will take. But the coax is capable of handling that, isn't it? If you have coax rated at 3kV, like RG213, a direct lightning strike will only exceed it's capacity by a million times. So, no, coax is not a good earth path. As an exercise, you can use 300kA as the current for a direct lightning strike. Based on the ground conductivity of 10 milli Siemens per meter, you can work out how far lightning needs to be in order for your RG213 to survive if your earth stakes are 10m apart and not bonded. So the lesson is, bond all of your earth stakes together. Connect the coax shield to the tower and create a Single Point Ground by connecting them all together. There are several online lightning maps showing real-time lightning activity which can also help. Weatherzone incorporates the Bureau of Meteorology Radar images and superimposed lightning strikes. Of course you can also use lightning data to check to see what the noise level might be like at a DX station you're trying to work. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Lecture 3 in a series of 21 lectures on solid state physics, delivered by Professor Steven H. Simon in early 2014.

Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Statistik - Digitale Hochschulschriften der LMU - Teil 02/02

This thesis is about an operator algebraic approach towards the derivation of the electrical conductivity in disordered solid states based on the theory of quantum many-particle systems. Such an approach is of interest since it allows for the description of interacting electron gases, which is a feature not present in previous work. In the context of the description of ergodic media, new concepts are introduced, such as covariant states and covariant morphisms. Moreover, the concept of covariant states is combined with the well-known concept of KMS states. In its covariant form, KMS states describe electron gases in ergodic media at thermal equilibrium. Such states are the starting point of the electron gases considered here. An external electric field is applied to the system, influences the electron gas and causes internal electric currents. Thus, the equilibrium position of the system is disturbed, leading to a time evolution of the system, which is described by covariant automorphisms. Summing up, the system is given in a time dependent, covariant state that acts on the algebra of bounded and local operators on the fermionic Fock space defined over some given one-particle Hilbert space. For a discrete model of an extended electron gas in one space dimension with a pair interaction of finite range, explicit constructions of the above states are presented. In addition, for the special case of non-interacting electron gases, the construction of the time dependent covariant state is carried out in arbitrary space dimension. Since measurements in a quantum system are implemented by the action of its state on bounded, local and self-adjoint operators, the concept of a current density operator is introduced. The current density is then defined as the result of the measurement of the current density operator. By an application of Birkhoff’s ergodic theorem, the transformation law of the current density operator together with the covariant transformation law of the state of the electron gas implies the almost sure existence of the spatial mean of the current density. Moreover, the spatial mean current density is almost surely independent of the concrete realisation given. The electric current density describes the linear dependence of the spatial mean current density on the external electric field, for small strengths. Via linear response theory for the noninteracting model of an electron gas, an explicit expression for the current density is derived in terms of a so called Kubo formula. For the derivation the system needs to satisfy a localisation condition, which is specifically designed for non-interacting electron gases. In view of a linear response theory of interacting electron gases, candidates for a generalisation of this localisation criterion that also apply to interacting systems are introduced.

Background: Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) has been used for diagnosing and monitoring respiratory disorders. For clinical purposes the assessment of easy-to-obtain nonspecific markers seems particularly interesting. Objectives: As these measures are related to each other, our objective was to extract the independent information in global EBC markers across a range of respiratory disorders. Methods: EBC was collected from patients with asthma (n = 18), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 17), and cystic fibrosis (n = 46), as well as from lung transplant (LTX) recipients (n = 14) and healthy controls (n = 26). Samples were assessed for electrical conductivity, ammonia, pH, and nitrite/nitrate. pH was measured after both deaeration with argon and CO(2) standardization. Additionally, the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) was assessed. Factor analysis was applied to identify major factors concerning these measures. Results: Three independent factors were detected; the first comprised conductivity, ammonia, and pH, especially when standardized using CO(2), the second nitrite/nitrate, and the third FE(NO). Conductivity and ammonia were highly correlated (r = 0.968; p < 0.001). FE(NO) provided independent information mainly in asthma. The nonspecific EBC markers showed considerable overlap between patient groups and healthy subjects. However, conductivity, ammonia, pH standardized for CO(2) and nitrite/nitrate were increased in LTX recipients compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05 each). Conclusions: A panel of nonspecific easy-to-obtain exhaled breath markers could be reduced to 3 independent factors. The information content of conductivity, ammonia, and pH after CO(2) equilibration appeared to be similar, while FE(NO) was independent. The increased levels of these biomarkers in LTX might indicate a potential for their use in these patients. Copyright (C) 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel
