Phil Lempert believes many supermarkets were selling fresh fruit and vegetables wrong even before the coronavirus pandemic began. Now, with the crisis causing dramatic changes to the entire food distribution business, he thinks a radical overhaul of the supermarket format is coming, while foodservice outlets could see new opportunities to offer consumers an attractive alternative place to buy their fresh produce. Lempert certainly knows a thing or two about what makes supermarkets tick, not to mention where they need to improve. Known to many as the SupermarketGuru, he makes regular appearances talking about grocery trends on CNN, NBC, ABC, Fox News and even the Oprah Winfrey show. Speaking to Chris White in the latest episode of Fruitnet's conversation series Fruitbox, Lempert casts a critical eye over supermarket fresh produce departments, explains where they can improve, and considers what the supermarket of the future will look like. He also comments on the rise and predicted fall of retail's answer to foodservice the groceraunt, the apparent arrival of a new distribution channel in the form of the so-called restaumart, the expansion of e-commerce and discount retailing, an expected increase in the popularity of scratch cooking, and the great upheaval being seen in the restaurant business as a result of Covid-19. Hosted by Chris White in London, Fruitbox now attracts a big audience across the global fruit and vegetable business that tunes in twice a week to hear exclusive interviews and expert analysis. Live from the NRF 2020 expo floor, we’re joined by Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert and co-CEO of Spoon Guru, Marcus Stripf! This episode, we discuss key trends at this year’s conference (robotics and personalization), as well as emerging trends in the US and European grocery market (click-and-collect, customer-centric experiences and delivery). We kick off the podcast observing the trends at NRF, what we’re seeing and how that reflects the current market needs. Phil notes the excitement around robotics, and where retailers should really be turning their attention to. “There’s too much attention being given to robotics…That’s not what a consumer wants. Yes, we’ve got higher labor costs than before. Yes, we want to be able to deliver in 30 minutes. But it’s not about robotics - that’s a tool. What we really need to do is focus on the consumer, and that’s what I’m looking for. To see what are those consumer aided products that can really change the life of a consumer versus the back room.” Marcus adds that there is a slow adoption of personalization in retail, as compared to other markets. “It’s becoming a broad use case now. We’re seeing personalization, curation entering areas like CRM, loyalty programs, recommendation engines, where people expect a highly tailored experience. You know, we see this with the likes of YouTube and Spotify and Netflix. Why don’t we get that in retail?” Phil, Marcus and Sylvain go on to talk about: what’s been happening in grocery in Europe,  are US retailers truly innovating or just developing new technologies as distractions, and whether gig economy companies, like Instacart and Uber, are profitable or not Listen to the full episode to catch all of the interesting insights from our incredible guests and join us at NRF booth #1418 to meet them in person, January 12-14!

Farmers provide the raw building blocks for brands. Many consumers don’t know where their food comes from beyond a supermarket. Celebrating the important role farmers play in our food system needs to be an integral part of your selling story and mission. This episode's FREE downloadable guide Nothing happens until someone buys your product and shoppers can’t buy what they can’t find. The path to sustainable sales and getting your product onto more retailers shelves and into the hands of more shoppers. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE STRATEGIC GUIDE: Top 10 Strategies To Meet Your Business Goals Welcome and thank you for listening. As you know, this podcast is a celebration of authentic, real food, the building blocks of every natural organic product. We focus on the strategies to help you get your products on more shelves and into the hands of more shoppers. This all begins with the farmer. It’s the farmer that provides the raw ingredients for every product that you find in every retail store. Think about it. A lot of people don’t really understand or appreciate where their food comes from. Natural brands need to work hard to educate their shoppers so that they know and understand this.  I believe that the greatest strength of every brand is to help the retailer understand that unique consumer that buys your product.  That unique consumer that doesn’t settle, the one that that looks beyond the four corners of the package to understand what is in your product, the raw ingredients.  The unique consumer that wants authenticity and transparency. After all, that’s the heart of the natural channel. To do this, you need to be able to have an intimate one-on-one relationship with your customers. Here’s why this matters. Nothing happens until someone buys something, and customers can’t buy your products if they can’t find them. Before they start looking, however, they have to know, like, and trust your brand. That goes back to the authentic ingredients that you make your product with, and that goes back to the farmer.  Which is exactly why wanted to invite my special guest, Phil Lempert, The Supermarket Guru to join me today.  Phil was on Episode 32. If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend you go back and listen to it.  It was a fan favorite. Phil is an expert on helping us understand what’s going on in the industry, the trends and things that we need to be paying attention to, and what the future of the industry looks like.  The reason I was thrilled to invite Phil on this podcast is that he recently launched a new podcast called Farm…Food…Facts. You’ve got to check it out. It’s quickly becoming a favorite of mine. In this podcast, Phil talks to farmers and ranchers about real food. Where the real food comes from, the relationship between food and the products we all eat — your products.  He also discusses the challenges that farmers face and trends that you need to be aware of, trends that can help set you apart and differentiate you from other brands. In other words, what consumers buy when they buy your product, and the retailer. Not just one retailer, but every retailer you compete against. Every competitor, everyone on the shelf, the same shelf that you're on. Well, the challenge that faces literally every brand out there is we get so busy, so immersed in what we're doing that we get blinders on.
