On this edition of Parallax Views, two Jewish American perspectives on the Jewish American community's response to 9/11, the issue of antisemitism, and Israel/Palestine. First up, Dov Waxman, director of UCLA's Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Chair in Israel Studies, joins the show to discuss the American Jewish community's response to 9/11, defining antisemitism (and why he argues that anti-Zionism is not antisemitism; Waxman was part of the Nexus Task Force that sought to combat antisemitism while arguably having a less broad and potentially politicized definition of antisemitism than the IHRA), his book Trouble in the Tribe: The American Jewish Conflict Over Israel, the idea of exiling anti-Zionist Jewish groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow and why disagrees with it, the debate over the value of the settler-colonial discourse, the different types of Zionism, his feelings on Palestinian anti-Zionist attitudes, and much, much more! In the second segment of the show Ron Kampeas, longtime reporter of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, discuss a number of the topics discussed with Prof. Waxman, but also the March for Israel rally, right-wing antisemitism and criticism of John Hagee's participation in the rally, the involvement of a "peace bloc" at the rally, the Jonathan Pollard spy case, Ron's reporting on the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting, remaining objective in reporting on news that oftn hits close to home emotionally, Rashida Tlaib's use of the pro-Palestinian "from the rive to the sea", the murder of Chicago-based Jewish-American community leader Samantha Woll and the rush to assume it was a hate crime (since ruled out by police), differences between Jewish media outlets in both America and Israel, sentiments against Benjamin Netanyahu in the U.S. and Israel, and much, much, more!

In a significant development, a federal jury has determined that Robert Bowers, the gunman responsible for the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in US history at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, is eligible for the death penalty. Bowers was found guilty of numerous federal hate crimes last month. The jury agreed unanimously on three key factors: Bowers' age at the time of the shooting, his intent, and the presence of aggravating factors such as the vulnerability of some victims. The sentencing phase of the trial will decide whether Bowers receives life imprisonment or the death penalty. In other news, Pope Francis has announced the addition of 21 new cardinals to the Catholic Church, including prelates from Jerusalem and Hong Kong. The ceremony to install the new cardinals will take place on September 30 at the Vatican. The appointments will increase the number of Cardinal electors in the conclave to 137. Vatican correspondent John Allen speculates that one of the newly appointed cardinals, Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, may be a possible successor to Pope Francis in the next Conclave.

Keep an eye on our podcast stream and website for a link to this episode coming out in the next couple of days. Local Doxxings Within the last week, over 15 people were doxxed by white supremacists in our community. Here is most of a collective statement released a day or two after the fact by some of those folks: They've targeted more than twenty people they believe are involved in anti-racist organizing in North Carolina. They've posted information such as our home addresses, places of work, family members, license plates, social media profiles–whatever information they could find. They seem to be fixating on trans and nonbinary people in particular, and delight in trying to deadname and misgender us whenever possible. Some of us, and some of our family members, have received harassing messages. They wrote about us like it's some big secret that we oppose fascism, that we oppose racism, that we oppose all forms of bigotry and oppression. It's not a secret. We weren't hiding. We are not ashamed. This isn't a plea for sympathy. Our friends and immediate community have been amazing. Rather, this is a message to let you know that if you ever find yourself targeted by neo-Nazis and the far right, you are not alone. None of us need to face this rising tide of fascist scum alone. We have each other. Robert Bowers, the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooter, actively and publicly chatted with alt-right trolls who had doxxed anti-racist activists. He even discussed violence against anti-racists in our region. This is probably a good time to think seriously about your online security and that of your family members and friends. But staying safe isn't just a matter of changing your Facebook settings or making your Instagram private. It's a matter of us showing up for each other. Of us not letting them intimidate us, not letting them isolate us. Not letting them stop us from our work. Especially when the work is stopping fascism. To read the full statement, you can visit https://ashevillesolidarity.tumblr.com/ , where you can also see a list of bands and businesses which have been included in the current harassment. And of course, there are ways to donate and send support! For an article about this (released just as our radio show was airing), including a statement by Firestorm Books contextualizing the specific harassment they've received, you can visit The Asheville Blade, which you can donate to here! "One of the wonderful things about being a Rabbi is you get to be a part of people's stories...the joy and the sorrow."Rabbi Sam Spector shares his perspective on learning to "see holiness" in other people, whatever their backgrounds, as fellow children of the creator. He speaks personally about visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and what he asks people who state a disbelief in God and in prayer. And, in the aftermath of the recent Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting, he talks about the reasons for such acts, and what we can each do to prevent them.(pc/Jacob Frazier)

Right-wing terrorist kills 11 during worship at Pittsburgh synagogue, the deadliest attack on American Jews in history. Trump spins a lie about the NY Stock Exchange and 9/11 in order to justify holding a political rally the same day has the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy deletes his anti-semitic dog whistle tweet, which said that three wealthy Jews are trying to buy the election. McCarthy hit all the globalist, wink-wink, themes. Ahead of next week’s midterm elections, Trump stokes anti-immigrant flames, threatening an executive order to end birthright citizenship. 538 still showing that Democrats will take back the house. However, if we’ve learned anything from the 2016 presidential election, the polls can be horrifically wrong...so, vote, vote vote. High school and college students at more than 500 schools are planning on walking out to vote on Election Day. And let’s not forget the war against the caravan and the GOP's closing racist ads. The Congressional Budget Office just released a new analysis of the Senate tax bill. Wouldn’t you know it? The bill is even worse for lower-income people than previously thought. All cred to Mitch McConnell and his Republican buds in the Senate. Workers at 60% of Google offices around the world walk off the job yesterday and issued a manifesto of sorts calling for massive changes at the company in terms of sexual discrimination and transparency. Brazil joins the autocrat club. Jair Bolsonaro was elected as Brazil’s new president on Sunday. There can be little question that we are living in a period of history in which the very concept of democracy is under assault. Kicking things off, Bolsonaro’s party has launched a campaign against “indoctrinator teachers.” Scott Wagner is DOWN 26 points in the latest Franklin and Marshall Poll. And, the day after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, Scott Wagner spreads conspiracy theories about the secret people is funding the traveling caravan. We’ll give you a couple of guesses about who’s at the top of that list. The Susquehanna Policy Center, a conservative polling firm and think tank, has George Scott and Jess King within 3-4 points of Scott Perry and Lloyd Smucker. They also have Ron DiNicola leading Mike Kelly by 6 points. Joe Biden will be stumping all over Pennsylvania on Sunday. He’ll be campaigning with Matt Cartwright and George Scott. Looks like “methane migration” from natural gas operations in Green County PA may have been responsible for the house that blew up and nearly killed 3 people. Will labor activists hold their union leaders accountable if Scott Wallace loses his race for the PA-1 and Republicans maintain control of the House? Comfortable union leaders are going to have to get with the program or be complicit with the demise of what’s left of the labor movement. The latest polls are concerning. New PASSHE Chancellor, Daniel Greenstein, visits Kutztown. In today’s Last Call, Sean’s going to see Papa Joe Biden. And Free Will releases Kiwi Kick Punch tomorrow, 11/3/2018. It’s a Triple IPA with Kiwi, Vanilla, and Milk Sugar at 12.6% ABV. 4-pack cans will be available at both locations

In the wake of Pittsburgh massacre, and the Mosque shooting in Quebec city last year, we look at what is driving hateful rhetoric online, and how we’re seeing a rise in anti-Semitism in Canada.   Dave is joined by Montreal Gazette columnist Bill Brownstein.

David Neiwert is an investigative journalist based in Seattle and a contributing writer for the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is the author of numerous books including the new Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump, The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right, Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us, Over the Cliff: How Obama's Election Drove the American Right Insane. David and Chauncey discuss how Donald Trump, the Republican Party, and the right-wing hate media instigate violence such as what took place last week in Pittsburgh, the "MAGA Bomber", and the hate crime killing of 2 elderly black people in Louisville. David also details the various elements of the so-called "alt-right" and how its white supremacist politics are central to the violence inspired by Donald Trump. In addition, David explains the role (and dangers) of "scripted violence" and "eliminationist" language used by today's conservatives against their fellow Americans and the intentional violence which occurs as a result. David and Chauncey also issue a warning: there will only be more violence as directed and encouraged by Donald Trump and his allies if the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives in next week's midterm elections. During this week's podcast Chauncey "connects the dots" about the sensationalistic violence of Trump's "MAGA Bomber" to the barbarism of the mass murder which took place at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Chauncey also offers a new concept for listeners of the podcast: America is a "pathocracy". Chauncey again asks, "what are the American people going to do?" in the face of Donald Trump and the right-wing movement's fascist violence against them. This last week proved that there is still plenty of hate in America and also that there continues to be a place for it on social media. Many social media platforms have become amplifiers of hate speech and in many cases, tech companies have shown that they don't have a handle on this. With the case of the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooter, little known Gab.com has come into the spotlight. Ina Fried, Chief Technology Correspondent for Axios, joins us to talk about the role of social media in recent violent events. Next, the U.S. Military is planning to deploy over 5,000 troops to the southern border in a mission called Operation Faithful Patriot. As news of a migrant caravan headed toward the U.S. continues, the president is calling it an invasion that will be met by the military. Alicia Caldwell, Immigration Reporter for the WSJ, joins us for the details of the deployment and the backlog of asylum cases in the U.S. Finally, a woman is locked in a legal battle with her ex-husband over the fate of her frozen embryos. In this particular case, it sparked the creation of an Arizona law that sides with the party willing to carry the embryos to term. Critics say it could create a legal precedent defining embryos as “life” in order to chip away at abortion rights.
