This week we talk about Yoon, martial law, and impeachment. We also discuss the PPP, chaebol, and dictators.Recommended Book: Starter Villain by John ScalziTranscriptIn the wake of WWII, Korea—which was previously held by the recently-defeated Japanese Empire—was split into two countries, the north backed by the Soviet Union and the south backed by the United States and its allies.North Korea had a guerrilla fighter and staunch Soviet-style communism activist, Kim Il Sung, placed at the head of its new government, while South Korea was to be led by a longtime local politician named Syngman Rhee, who had run the country earlier, from 1919 until 1925, at which point he was impeached, and then again in 1947-1948, as head of the country's post-war provisional government.Rhee was a hardcore Korean independence activist during a period when the Japanese were clamping down on their mainland holdings and doing away with anyone who caused trouble or sparked anti-colonial protests, so he spent some time in exile, in China, returned to the US, where he was educated, for a bit, and then the US military returned him to Korea to run that provisional government once the dust had settled and the Japanese had been ousted from the area.Rhee was an ideal representative in the region by American standards, in some ways, as he was vehemently anti-communist, even to the point of killing and supporting the killing of something like 100,000 communist sympathizers during an uprising on South Korea's Jeju Island. He was president when North Korea invaded, sparking the Korean War, and then refused to sign the armistice that would have formally ended the conflict in 1953, because he believed the only solution to the conflict between these nations was a military one, and he held out hope that the South would someday conquer the North and unify Korea as a nation, once more.Rhee then won reelection in 1956, and changed the country's constitution to allow him to remain in office, getting rid of the two-term limit—which was not a popular move, but it worked, and he was able to run uncontested in 1960, because his opponent died of cancer in the lead-up to the election—though his opposition protested the results, claiming a rigged voting process, and this led to a huge movement by students in the country, which became known as the April Revolution; students were shot by police while protesting during this period, and that ultimately led to Rhee stepping down that same year, 1960.So Rhee was a western-educated, christian conservative who was vehemently anti-communist, though also living in a part of the world in which an aggressive communist dictatorship recently invaded, and was threatening to do so again—so it could be argued his paranoia was more justified than in other parts of the world that had similar frenzied moments and governments during the cold war, though of course the violence against innocent citizens was impossible to justify even for him and his government; his authoritarian rule was brought to an end following that shooting of student protestors, and that left a power vacuum in the country, and South Korea saw 13 months of infighting and instability before a General named Park Chung Hee launched a coup that put him in charge.Park positioned himself as president, and he did pretty well in terms of economic growth and overall national development—at this point the South was way behind the North in pretty much every regard—but he was also an out-and-out dictator who ruled with an iron fist, and in 1972 he put an entirely new constitution into effect that allowed him to keep running for president every six years, in perpetuity, no term limits, and which gave the president, so himself, basically unlimited, unchecked powers. The presence of a seemingly pretty capable, newly empowered dictator helped South Korea's economy, manufacturing base, and infrastructure develop at an even more rapid pace than before, though his nearly 18-year presidency was also defined by the oppression he was able to leverage against anyone who said anything he didn't like, who challenged him in any way, and who spoke out of turn against the things he wanted to do, or the constitution that allowed him to do all those things. In 1979, he was assassinated, and there's still a lot of speculation as to the why of the killing—the assassin was in Park's orbit, and was seemingly doing okay as part of that all-powerful government entity—but alongside speculation that it might have been planned by the US, in order to keep South Korea from developing a nuclear weapon, that it might have been the result of political jealousy, and that if might have been just an impulsive act by someone who was done being pushed around by a bully, it's also possible that the perpetrator was a democracy activist who wanted to get a successful and long-ruling dictator out of the way.Whatever the actual catalyst was, the outcome was more political upheaval, which by the end of the year, we're still in 1979, led to yet another military coup. This new coup leader was General Chun Doo-hwan, and he implemented martial law across the whole of the country by mid-year, as he ascended to the role of president, and he cracked down on democracy movements that erupted across the country pretty violently.Chun held onto power for nearly 8 years, ruling as a dictator, like his predecessor, until 1987, when a student democracy activist was tortured to death by his security forces. This torture was revealed to the country by a group of pro-democracy catholic priests in June of that year, and that sparked what became known as the June Democratic Struggle, which led to the June 29 Declaration, which was an announcement by the head of the ruling party—so the head of the party the dictatorial president belonged to, the Democratic Justice Party—that the next presidential vote would allow for the direct election of the president. That party leader, Roh Tae-woo, very narrowly won the election, and his term lasted from 1988 until 1993; and during his tenure, the country entered the UN, that was in 1991, and his presidency is generally considered to be a pivotal moment for the country, as while he was technically from the same party as the previous ruler, a dictator, he distanced himself and his administration from his precursor during the election, and he abided by that previously enforced two-term limit.By 1996, things had changed a lot in the country, the government fully recalibrating toward democratic values, and those previous rulers—the dictator Chun and his ally-turned-democratic reformer, Roh—were convicted for their corruption during the Chun administration, and for their mass-killings of pro-democracy protestors during that period, as well. Both were pardoned by the new president, but both were also quite old, so this was seen as a somewhat expedient political maneuver without a lot of downsides, as neither was really involved in politics or capable of causing much damage at that point in their lives. In the years since, especially since the turn of the century, South Korea has become one of the world's most successful economies, but also a flourishing example of democratic values; there are still some remnants of those previous setups, including the government's tight ties with the so-called chaebol, or “rich family” companies, which were business entities propped up by government support, which were often given monopoly rights that other businesses didn't enjoy, as part of a government effort to pull the country out of agrarianism back in the mid-20th century; companies like Hyundai, Samsung, and LG thus enjoy outsized economic power, to this day, alongside a whole lot of political influence in the country, as a result of this setup, which is a holdover from those earlier, dictatorial times. But South Korea has generally erred toward rule of law since the late-1990s, even to the point of punishing their most powerful elected leaders, like President Park, who was accused of corruption, bribery, and influence-peddling, by removing her from office, then sentencing her to 24 years in jail. What I'd like to talk about today, though, is a recent seeming abuse of power at a pretty staggering level in South Korean governance, and the consequences of that abuse for the country and for the abuser.—In March of 2022, Yoon Suk Yeol, a conservative candidate of the People Power Party, who was hoping to oust the incumbent Democratic Party from office, won the narrowest victory in South Korea history. In his previous role as the chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office, Yoon was partly responsible for convicting former President Park for her abuses of power, and his public disagreements with President Moon, who appointed him as Prosecutor General of the country in 2019, led to his popularity in conservative circles, in turn leading to his ascension as a candidate in 2021.Yoon ran on a conservative platform that's become familiar in elections around the world in recent decades; basically deregulation paired with culture-war issues, like doing away with government support for gender equality and other often politically liberal efforts of that nature. He won the election by less than a percentage point, and his tenure is office has not been favorably reviewed by democratic watchdogs, which have noted various sorts of corruption and democratic backsliding under his watch, and economic and policy analysts consider his administration to have been a somewhat ineffectual one.Yoon's tenure, like his candidacy, was also plagued by gaffes and seeming missteps. He tried to raise the country's maximum weekly working hours from 52 to 69, though he pulled back on this idea after a huge wave of backlash from young people. He was also criticized for having just three women in his government, and two among his vice-ministerial level officials. He added two more after those criticisms, but one of them quit about a month after being appointed, following her attempt to implement massively unpopular school system revisions—and the entire government's approval rating collapsed around this time, due to that proposed revision, which was criticized as being half-baked and nonsensical, but it was also partly the result of her ascension to the government in the first place, as she had a record of drunk driving and academic plagiarism; the president brought in a woman to placate the masses, basically, despite that woman being just a really, really bad choice for the position, which by some estimates further demonstrated his disdain for and ignorance about the whole conversation about women in government.Yoon also tried to create an agency that would provide more oversight of the country's police force, but this led to protests by police, who saw it as an attempt to take control of law enforcement and use it against the president's enemies; the president's office then worsened matters threatened to punish protesting officers.By 2024, leading into the country's parliamentary elections, Yoon's government was incredibly unpopular with just about everyone, because of those and other decisions and statements and gaffes. Even his wife has been under investigation for accepting bribes and having undo influence on who takes positions of power, alongside comments she's made about seeking revenge against people who say not nice things about her, including journalists. The opposition swept that 2024 parliamentary election, which had the practical impact of making Yoon's government something of a lame duck, unable to get anything done, because his party only controlled 36% of the National Assembly. He then boycotted the inaugural session of this new National Assembly, seemingly because he didn't like the outcome, becoming the first President to do so since democracy returned to the country in 1988.All of which leads us to what happened on December 3, 2024.Late that night, President Yoon declared martial law, which would give him, as president, wartime powers to do all sorts of dictator-like things. He said he declared martial law to unfreeze a frozen government that was paralyzed by his opposition: Assemblymembers had stymied a lot of his efforts to pass laws favored by his party and constituents, and had tallied a large number of impeachment efforts against people in his administration, while he, in turn, used more vetos than any other democratically elected president in the country's history—so the executive and legislative branches were at a standoff, and this was freezing the government, so he says he declared martial law to basically get things done. The opposition, in contrast, says his move was unconstitutional, and that he tried to launch a coup. That latter claim seems to be backed by the fact that Yoon accused his political competition of collaborating with North Korean communists and engaging in anti-state activities, which he said were intended to destroy the country—this seems to be based, again, on the fact that they didn't approve the stuff he wanted to get approved. As part of this martial law declaration, he also declared a prohibition on all political activities and all gatherings of the National Assembly and local representatives, and he suspended the freedom of the press. He apparently also ordered the arrest of many of his political opponents, alongside some people within his own party who might oppose him and his seeming power-grab.Both parties, his own included, opposed this proclamation, and there were some dramatic standoffs following his announcement at 10:30pm local time, as protestors took to the streets and legislators gathered at the National Assembly Proceeding Hall, where they do their job, because members of the military were ordered to stop them; there are videos of these soldiers standing in the way of these politicians, trying to keep them from entering the building where they could vote to do away with the martial law declaration, and in some cases pointing assault rifles at them. The legislators didn't backing down, and in a few cases wrestled with the soldiers while thousands of citizens protested behind them against the military action.Eventually, the Assembly members made it inside and voted to lift martial law; this happened at 4:30am that morning. And over the next few days they began impeachment proceedings against the president, saying they would keep doing so until he resigned.A bunch of people resigned from Yoon's administration following his seeming attempt at a coup and, and on December 7, a few days later, he issued a public apology, saying that he wouldn't try to do that again, though on the 12th he backtracked and defended his declaration of martial law, saying that he had to protect the country from these anti-state forces, accusing his opponents, once more, of being on North Korea's side.On December 14, Yoon was impeached and booted from office, following another, failed vote; his party sticking with him for a while, though seemingly distancing themselves from him, following his doubling-down on the “my political opponents are communists” stance. The leader of his party the PPP, stepped down shortly after that successful vote, having changed his vote from being against impeachment to supporting it, saying basically that there was no other way to remove Yoon from office, and Yoon's Supreme Councilmembers all stepped down, as well.South Korea's Constitutional Court will now have to decide, within the next six months, whether Yoon will be formally and permanently removed from office, or if he'll be reinstated. In the two previous instances of a president being impeached, the court has taken 2 and 3 months to make their decision, and they reinstated one president, while allowing the impeachment to stand for the other. If Yoon is removed by the court, the country will have to elect a new leader within two months, and in the interim, the country's Prime Minister, the number 2 person in the government, is serving as president; Yoon has been stripped of his powers.Yoon has a broad swathe of immunity against criminal charges due to his position as president, but that doesn't apply to rebellion or treason, which could apply in this case. He's been banned from leaving the country, but there's a good chance if he tries, he won't be stopped, due to a potential conflict between state security forces and presidential security forces—it would be a bad look to have them fight and maybe kill each other.Yoon's presence was requested by prosecutors over the weekend, but he didn't show up to be questioned, and there's a chance that if this happens again, him deciding not to show up and ignoring these requests, he'll be arrested—though that same issue with presidential security fighting with police forces applies here, too, so it's an open question what will happen if he just ignores the whole process and keeps claiming he did nothing wrong.A preliminary court hearing date has been set for December 27, and though the court only has six of its total nine members at the moment, it has said it's fine to move forward with an incomplete court, though the government has said they'll likely be able to get another three judges approved by the end of December. So things are complicated in South Korea right now, the former president disempowered, but seemingly refusing to participate in the proceedings that will help a new government form, if his dismissal is upheld by the court, that is, and that means the interim government is even more of a lame duck than he was, at a moment in which the world is very dynamic, both in the sense of geopolitics and North Korea becoming more active and antagonistic, and in the sense that economics and tech and everything else is roiling and evolving pretty rapidly right now; a new paradigm seems to be emerging in a lot of different spaces, and South Korea is in a terrible spot to make any moves in any direction, based on that—and that seems likely to remain the case for at least a few more months, but possibly longer than that, too, depending on how the court case plays out, and how the potential next-step election turns out, following that court case.Show Noteshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_South_Korean_martial_law_crisishttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/03/world/asia/south-korea-martial-law.htmlhttps://www.yahoo.com/news/heres-whats-going-south-korea-213322966.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/03/martial-law-south-korea-explained/https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-protesters-photo-gallery-yoon-b17f96063a2635ebc87f35ed9ab5ac5bhttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/14/world/asia/south-korea-president-impeached-martial-law.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/12/04/world/asia/south-korea-impeachment-vote-president-yoon.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/world/asia/south-korea-protest-feliz-navidad.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/12/14/world/asia/skorea-yoon-timeline.htmlhttps://apnews.com/article/south-korea-martial-law-yoon-impeach-6432768aafc8b55be26215667e3c19d0https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/south-koreas-yoon-faces-second-impeachment-vote-over-martial-law-bid-2024-12-14/https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/14/south-korea-president-yoon-suk-yeol-downfall-analysishttps://www.wsj.com/world/asia/south-korea-president-yoon-suk-yeol-impeached-49b0779chttps://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/14/south-korea-yoon-impeachment-vote/https://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/1054103.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoon_Suk_Yeolhttps://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/01/world/asia/south-korea-first-lady-dior.htmlhttps://www.economist.com/europe/2024/12/12/why-romania-cancelled-a-pro-russian-presidential-candidatehttps://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20241215050041https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2pl4edk13ohttps://www.cnn.com/2024/12/14/world/video/south-korea-yoon-second-impeachment-watson-cnntm-digvidhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/15/south-korea-president-yoon-suk-yeol-reportedly-defies-summons-in-martial-law-inquiryhttps://apnews.com/article/south-korea-yoon-martial-law-investigation-constitutional-court-8ec38d61f0ea5c48b3bd1f683b5e9c8dhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syngman_Rheehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Koreahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Park_Chung_Heehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coup_d%27%C3%A9tat_of_December_Twelfthhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaebol This is a public episode. Recorded on 15 August 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Felicia Wong chairs a webinar with Dr Päivi Räsänen Finland has a good reputation regarding free speech internationally and long, historical roots in the Christian confession. It is paradoxical that in this country Päivi has been criminally charged for voicing her deeply held beliefs about marriage and gender that are based on classical Christianity. This means that the same is possible in any country. The legal process against Päivi started in 2019. She has been in court twice. The Helsinki District Court and last year the Appellate Court issued unanimous acquittals, but the Prosecutor General appealed that decision to the Supreme Court. She is ready to defend freedom of speech and faith, including the European court of Human rights if necessary. Päivi Räsänen is a medical doctor and has been a Member of the Finnish Parliament for 29 years. From 2004 to 2015, she was the chairwoman of the Finnish Christian Democrats. From June 2011 to May 2015, she was the Minister of the Interior of Finland. She lives in Riihimäki with her husband. They have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. She has written several books from a Christian perspective, for example on marriage, abortion and euthanasia. During this term, Päivi is a member of the Social Affairs and Health Committee and a deputy member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Russia's war against Ukraine is the most documented conflict in history. In every part of Ukraine from which Russian forces have retreated, Ukrainian officials and civil society groups have found shocking evidence of mass atrocities and war crimes: torture, rape, summary executions, forced disappearances, looting, and the destruction of Ukrainian cultural heritage sites. The Ukrainian government is working around the clock to seek justice for the victims, even as the war rages on.In this special podcast episode, Lawfare Contributing Editor Eric Ciaramella brings you audio from a recent event at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace featuring Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Andriy Kostin. In his discussion with Carnegie President Tino Cuéllar, Kostin laid out a compelling case for why Ukrainians believe that peace without justice and accountability would be a false peace. Kostin discussed how his office is dealing with the overwhelming caseload and the help it needs from international partners. This event was organized in partnership with the American Society of International Law and the Embassy of Ukraine in Washington.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. Today opens with the acknowledgment of the passing of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) at the age of 90. While no moves have been made, this does move my Gavin Newsom/Kamala Harris double-move theory closer to reality. I then moved to a short segment where we looked at the top 10 stories the Legacy/mainstream media didn't want to cover this week. (A big shout out to Tara Bull for her efforts in compiling that list!) We then spend more time dissecting more of the impeachment inquiry. It seems IQ's of the Democrats on the panel dropped sharply before the hearing, because they all thought they were participating in Articles of Impeachment. The attempts the Left made to circle to Donald Trump and pretend they cannot see any evidence was an act in sheer, willful ignorance. One of the best lines of discussion, though, was when Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) broke down the FBI's FD-1023 form. This matched nicely with a story from the House Ways and Means Committee regarding another email exchange between Hunter Biden and Devon Archer. This one centers around how to split up a recent $5 million dollar payment that just happens to coincide with the $5 million Burisma paid out to get Joe Biden to have the Prosecutor General of Ukraine fired. Oh, to add some historical context, I remind you what the left said about Hunter working at Burisma when his dad was the VP. Then I play a soundbite from the ABC News exclusive with Hunter Biden from 2019 where he says he never made a dime from China. To give you an indication of what every Democrat's five minutes sounded like, I bring you Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). It's painful. It's terrible. It's hard to listen to. But, that's what they have all been turned into in the wake of undeniable evidence of bribery by President Joe Biden. It was so bad, the Democrat party had to selectively edit a statement by witness Jonathan Turley to make it sound like there was nothing at all worth noting by the end of the day. Thankfully, we can bring you the entire quote showing the exact opposite. By the end of the day, Rep. James Comer (R-KY) will move to subpoena the financial records of Hunter Biden, Jim Biden and the various Biden-owned companies. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't know that or much of anything else that transpired given that CNN, MSNBC and the big three television networks went with a complete blackout of coverage. Finally, it seems 11 lawmakers in the state of Michigan are suing the Secretary of State for violating both the US and State Constitutions. It's a step in the right direction at getting to the bottom of the obvious fraud committed during the run-up to the 2020 election. Brian sat down with Victor Shokin, who was once was an investigator for the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine, then he became the Deputy Prosecutor before being appointed the Prosecutor General. Shokin inherited the Burisma investigation and then Joe Biden bragged about getting him fired. He has not spoken to the American media on this until now. Shokin tells his side of the story on the incident that not only affected him - but his nation - and how it might have even played a part in the War with Russia. Viktor Shokin joined Brian on his Saturday show - ONE NATION - for this exclusive interview. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today's show opens with a breaking news story that it seems no one in the Legacy/mainstream media is interested in covering. Senior FBI Special Agent Charles McGonigal, the former head of counterintelligence at the FBI New York Field office and a key figure in the “Russiagate” investigation, is slated to plead guilty to corruption charges. Here's why this story is important. The charges against McGonigal stem from work he undertook for a sanctioned Russian oligarch. On top of that, he is also being charged in a separate case for taking $225,000 from an Albanian intelligence employee. So, while the media was foaming at the mouth over another Trump indictment, they are not just ignoring the Devon Archer testimony and doing their best to ignore all of the other evidence of the Biden Crime Family Syndicate, they are not even touching McGonigal's story. Also this week, another story that likely slid under your radar, a stripper by the stage name of Kennedy reveals how easily she and others in her line of work fleeced the First Son of tens of thousands of dollars. Much as the Burisma CEO commented to the Confidential Human Source, Kennedy considered Hunter like he was a dog that could be dragged around and led on. By the way, looking deeper into the transcripts from the Devon Archer testimony, when they discussed the Burisma CEO needing to leverage the Biden brand, Devon initially stated, twice, that Hunter had to call his “dad.” After a lunch break, Devon massaged his answer to saying, Hunter had to call D.C. This seems like a distinction without a difference, but even if Joe's name is taken out, Joe still got on a plane and blackmailed the Ukrainian president to fire the Prosecutor General. West Virginia's Attorney General, Patrick Morrisey, says if Jack Smith wants to avoid the appearance of bias, he would be happy to have the Trump case move to one of his courtrooms. While Morrisey makes a compelling argument for due process in our criminal justice system, does anyone believe Smith wants that? This case is going to be heard in D.C. and no matter what evidence is presented, that jury will have already made up it's mind and Trump will be found guilty. The Special Prosecutor is operating in a purely political mode. Speaking of playing politics, it seems the Fulton Country D.A. Fani Willis is playing a much better politician than she is being a prosecutor. She's already made a judge mad and gotten the senior legal analysts at CNN to question her actions. When you lose CNN, you aren't managing things well. Still, we live in strange times. Maybe we've reached the point where Americans are okay throwing our laws, our Constitution and our rights out the window when we really, really, really don't like someone. Yet, there might be a wrinkle given a Fani Willis may not have been granted jurisdiction over the state Capital building. We'll see what the Trump team does if (when) she files an indictment. Finally, it might serve as a good reminder of some of the under oath testimony poll watchers and supervisors were giving in 2021 before the Censorship Industrial Complex shut down the topic. While 2020 will never be overturned, it's important to remember what was being said and the allegations of impropriety were numerous across key battleground states. Those problems have not magically gone away. We need to remember the line, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.” Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. Today's show opens with me reading some of the key parts of the just released transcript of the House Oversight Committee's interview with Devon Archer. It's one thing to hear a few bites from the Tucker Carlson channel on Twitter, but to get the official testimony carries more weight. The sections I bring to you show how both he and Hunter understood what the Biden “brand” meant and it got them access to opportunities. But, that access was a two-way street. People were not bringing Hunter into prosperous positions just because of his last name. They knew, in so doing, they were getting Joe Biden. This is made even more clear when it comes to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Devon testified that Burisma would have likely gone under had it not been for the Biden Brand. It not only gave the company an intimidation factor to keep legal questions away, when push came to shove, it got tenacious prosecutor Viktor Shokin fired. Devon goes on to confirm Joe Biden did attend several business dinners and would be put on speaker phone at other business meetings to impress the clients. It was an obvious move to show Hunter could get to his dad anytime it was needed. But what about the firing of Viktor Shokin. Remember, Joe Biden, when bragging about it, said they had to replace him because he was bad and they needed someone who was solid. At the time of the firing, Rep. Tom Malinowski, former Assistant Secretary of State under President Obama, went on CNN to say they had to remove the “crooked prosecutor' in Ukraine “who was not bringing prosecutions in on anybody.” Let's call that THE BIG LIE. What they meant to say was he was getting way to close to exposing just how deep the Biden's (and other US officials) were in with their corruption and he had to be removed. To illustrate, I break down the records of the previous two Prosecutor Generals for Ukraine and we discover Shokin was a machine. He was rooting out much more corruption and had prosecuted more cases than both his predecessors combined. The irony is, when he was fired, his replacement literally did nothing. In fact, the new Prosecutor General even changed the rules to help the CEO of Burisma get out of paying for anything and the corruption charges just disappeared. Switching to the criminal indictments handed down by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, Kash Patel weighed-in and came to a similar conclusion to what I said on my show yesterday. Donald Trump is going to have a field day with his list of witnesses he will want to bring into court. And let's not think Smith is acting on his own. A reminder of a New York Times piece reveals Joe Biden wanted Trump prosecuted and even made a point of telling AG Merrick Garland to take some decisive action. But, even Alan Dershowitz agrees that even if the D.C. courtroom finds Trump guilty, it will never survive an appeal to the Supreme Court. Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard also weighs-in on just how close we are to losing our Republic. Based on her observation, our system of laws is so corrupt, it's no longer recognizable as the country our Founder created. In other news, more documents show just how bad the censorship demands were on Facebook from the White House. In expletive ridden complaints, the White House wanted more access, more data and more control over the content. And, just like with the Twitter files the content they wanted to censor were true stories about adverse affects of getting vaxxed. So, even truthful information could be considered “disinformation” if it runs contrary to the approved state narrative. Finally, I have to touch on the horrible misrepresentation of the state of Florida's Black History curriculum. Thanks to VP Harris grossly mischaracterizing it, even conservatives have been fooled by the Legacy/mainstream media into believing the content says black Americans “benefited” from slavery. It's preposterous. One of the architects of the curriculum is Dr. William B. Allen, a black professor. I also get word from author Kira Davis on just how wrong everyone is in spreading the Vice President's lies. The sooner we stop watching/listening to the mainstream media, the better. Washington Post senior writer Frances Stead Sellers speaks with Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin about investigating alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the state of Ukraine more than a year into the war with Russia.
Guests featured in this episode: Mykola Gnatovskyy, a renowned Ukrainian legal scholar who was recently elected to serve as judge at the European Court of Human Rights. Before taking up this very prestigious nine-year appointment at the ECHR, Mykola was a professor at the Institute of International Relations, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He also advised the Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs on international criminal justice, and was a member of the International Expert Board on Crimes Committed during Armed Conflict at the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. From 2015 until 2021, Mykola served three consecutive terms as President of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. In March of this 2022, he was one of the original signatories, together with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs and the former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, calling for the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate Russia for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. GLOSSARY:What is the International Criminal Court?(01:58 or p.1 in the transcript)International Criminal Court (ICC): permanent judicial body established by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998) to investigate, prosecute, and try individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity and to impose prison sentences upon individuals who are found guilty of such crimes. On July 1, 2002, after the requisite number of countries (60) ratified the agreement, the court began sittings. It is headquartered in the Netherlands at The Hague: source What is the War in Ukraine?(04:32 or p.2 in the transcript)In early November 2021 Russia began building up military forces along the borders of Ukraine, for the second time in a year. Over 100,000 Russian military personnel and assets were deployed in Crimea and in the Voronezh, Kursk and Bryansk regions of western Russia. Further Russian forces were deployed to Belarus for a series of exercises close to the Ukrainian border and Russian naval assets from the Baltic and Northern fleets deployed for exercises in the Black Sea. Tensions escalated following a US intelligence assessment in December 2021, which suggested that Russia could be planning an invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched military action in Ukraine, with forces crossing into the country from Belarus in the north, Russia in the east and Crimea in the south. Russia's actions came just days after President Putin officially recognized the self-declared independence of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), the regions of eastern Ukraine that are under the control of Russian-backed separatist forces, and deployed “peacekeeping” forces to the region: source What is the massacre in Eastern Anatolia?(07:18 or p.2 in the transcript)Massacre in Eastern Anatolia, also known as Armenian Genocide: campaign of deportation and mass killing conducted against the Armenian subjects of the Ottoman Empire by the Young Turk government during World War I (1914–18). Armenians charge that the campaign was a deliberate attempt to destroy the Armenian people and, thus, an act of genocide. The Turkish government has resisted calls to recognize it as such, contending that, although atrocities took place, there was no official policy of extermination implemented against the Armenian people as a group: source What is the Wagner Group?(17:02 or p.5 in the transcript)Wagner Group: a network of businesses and groups of mercenaries that have been linked by overlaps in ownership and logistics networks. Entities making up the network have been described in sanctions designations by the U.S. Treasury as being involved in a wide range of activities, including working to suppress pro-democracy protests, spreading disinformation, mining for gold and diamonds, and engaging in paramilitary activity. The group, such as it is, first appeared in Ukraine in 2014, where it assisted the Russian military in the annexation of Crimea. Since then, paramilitaries and businesses have branched out to Syria—where they have fought in support of embattled President Bashar al-Assad while securing a foothold in the country's energy sector—as well as to Libya, Sudan, Madagascar, Mozambique, and the Central African Republic: source What is the occupation of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine?(31:38 or p. 8 in the transcript)The Crisis in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine: on 22 February 2014, President Yanukovych disappeared from Ukraine and a new government was installed by the Ukrainian parliament. Later that month unidentified military figures, widely thought in the West to be Russian personnel (this was later confirmed), surrounded the airports in Crimea, a majority-Russian peninsula in Ukraine and the Crimean autonomous assembly was taken over by pro-Russian forces. In March 2014 a declaration of independence was issued by the assembly and a subsequent referendum on union with Russia was held. Since then, Russia has maintained its control over Crimea and supported pro-Russian separatist forces who also took control of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine (the Donbas) in 2014. Fighting between Russian-supported separatists and Ukrainian government forces has continued in the Donbas for the last eight years despite the negotiation of the Minsk Agreements in 2014/2015 which called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of all foreign armed groups and constitutional reform recognizing the special status of Donetsk and Luhansk: source Democracy in Question? is brought to you by:• Central European University: CEU• The Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: AHCD• The Podcast Company: Novel Follow us on social media!• Central European University: @CEU• Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy in Geneva: @AHDCentreSubscribe to the show. NFL To Require All 32 Teams To Hire Minority Offensive Assistant Coach For 2022 Season https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-nfl-to-require-all-32-teams-to-hire-minority-offensive-assistant-coach-for-2022-season “On Monday, the NFL announced that every team will be required to hire a minority assistant coach on the offensive staff, according to NFL.com. The individual can be a minority or a female, and will be signed to a one-year deal, partially paid from a league-wide fund. “It’s a recognition that at the moment, when you look at stepping stones for a head coach, they are the coordinator positions,” said Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II, chairman of the NFL Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. “We clearly have a trend where coaches are coming from the offensive side of the ball in recent years, and we clearly do not have as many minorities in the offensive coordinator [job].” Earlier in the day, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin — who hired Flores to his staff during the offseason — expressed doubt that the new measures would have an impact on increasing the number of diversity hires in the NFL coaching ranks. “I haven’t been in any discussions, and, no, I don’t have a level of confidence that would lead me to believe that things are going to be better,” Tomlin said. “I’m more of a show-me guy as opposed to a guy that sits around and talks about things.” Also on Monday, the league announced the creation of the NFL Diversity Advisory Committee. “Today, the National Football League (NFL) announced the creation of the NFL Diversity Advisory Committee, following its pledge last month to retain outside experts to review the league’s diversity policies and practices,” the NFL said in a press release. “The six-member committee will lend its expert, external perspective on industry best practices and will evaluate league and club diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies and initiatives, including all hiring processes, policies and procedures, with a primary focus on senior-level coach and front office personnel positions.” Let me just say this. All this diversity and inclusion stuff has not solved any of the problems that they originally set out to solve. Also, how insulting and belittling is this forced hire. How do they know they got the job based on their abilities and not based on the color of their skin. Judgment in Finnish MP’s Bible-tweet trial expected on 30th March https://adfinternational.org/aviso-judgment-in-finnish-mps-bible-tweet-trial-expected-on-30th-march/ According to ADF International: “A Finnish court is expected to rule on the Finnish MP Päivi Räsänen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola’s free speech case on 30th March. Both stand accused of having engaged in “hate speech” for publicly sharing their faith-based beliefs. The former Minister of the Interior had voiced her convictions on marriage and sexual ethics, in a 2019 tweet, a 2019 radio debate, and a 2004 pamphlet. The bishop faces charges for publishing Räsänen’s pamphlet. Their case garnered global media attention this year, as human rights experts voiced concern over the threat this case poses to free speech in Finland. “In a free society, everyone should be allowed to share their beliefs without fear of censorship. This is the foundation of every free and democratic society. We hope the Helsinki District Court will uphold this fundamental freedom when it rules on this case. Criminalizing speech through so-called ‘hate-speech’ laws shuts down important public debates and poses a grave threat to our democracies,” said Paul Coleman, Executive Director of ADF International and author of ‘Censored: How European Hate Speech Laws are Threatening Freedom of Speech’. In the last two years, Räsänen attended several lengthy police interrogations about her Christian beliefs – including being frequently asked by the police to explain her understanding of the Bible. In April 2021, Finland’s Prosecutor General had brought three criminal charges against Räsänen. Two of the three charges Räsänen faced had come after the police made strong recommendations not to continue the prosecution. Räsänen’s statements also did not violate the policies of Twitter or the national broadcaster, which is why they remained freely available on their platforms. ADF International will host a press conference after the verdict is announced on 30th March at 16:00 CEST. Dr. Päivi Räsänen, MP, Paul Coleman, Executive Director of ADF International, and Lorcán Price, Legal Counsel for ADF International will be available for questions after their statements. According to NBC News: “Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030, according to a newly signed bill by Gov. Jay Inslee. The bill says that all vehicles of the model year 2030 or later that are sold, purchased, or registered in the state must be electric. The bill covers a lot of transportation issues in the state and is a part of a larger $16.9 billion transportation package called “Move Ahead Washington," which Inslee described as a way to create more efficient transportation options. "Transportation is our state’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. There is no way to talk about climate change without talking about transportation," Inslee said. "This package will move us away from the transportation system our grandparents imagined and towards the transportation system our grandchildren dream of." Also included in the transportation package is funding for four new hybrid-electric ferries, thousands of electric vehicle charging stations, 25 transit electrification projects across the state, as well as free fares for riders 18 and younger on public transportation systems, according to a Medium post the governor wrote on Friday.” As Garrison reported on yesterday, the Don’t Say Gay Bill Drama Continues… Roll Clip: https://www.dailywire.com/news/gay-florida-kindergarten-teacher-worries-on-msnbc-he-wont-be-able-to-share-his-love-life-with-kids-anymore A couple things here. The word “gay” is not even mentionened in the bill. This is how the left are the liars we deserve, and anything that touches up to their worldview, they will attack, malign, and even slap you in the face like Will Smith. Spencer Cox's veto of a bill barring male-born athletes from girls' scholastic sports, becoming the 12th state to pass legislation to address rising concerns over transgender competitors in female athletics. The Senate voted 21-8 and the House voted 56-18 to override the governor's veto, clearing the required threshold of a two-thirds majority in both chambers in what was a widely anticipated outcome. The bill sponsored by Republican state Rep. Kera Birkeland requires public schools and private schools that compete against public schools to designate sports as male, female or co-ed. Male-born students are banned from competing on girls' teams.” “The Democrat opposition to the bill, as cited in the Washington Times, shows how far detached from reality the left is: Democratic state Rep. Brian King argued that "things are simply not black and white in terms of gender orientation, sexual orientation, gender identification." "It's simply not accurate to say that girls are girls and boys are boys, and never the two shall meet," he said. "There is in fact a lot that is unknown." Washington state plans to ban most non-electric vehicles by 2030 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/washington-state-plans-ban-non-electric-vehicles-2030-rcna21683 File this article under, please liberals do more of this. Of course you are not to be trusted. You are going against God and against creation, and what you are doing is harming your soul. Secondly, The left are absolutely lying and misrepresenting this bill. This bill is not outlawying you from talking about paddle boarding trips. This bill is outlawing you from grooming students. The word “gay” is not even mentionened in the bill. This is how the left are the liars we deserve, and anything that touches up to their worldview, they will attack, malign, and even slap you in the face like Will Smith. File this next one under Republican Governors are cowards: Utah's Republican Governor Vetoes Bill Banning Men From Women's Sports, Utah Legislature Overturns The Veto https://notthebee.com/article/utahs-republican-governor-vetoed-a-bill-banning-men-from-womens-sports-utah-legislature-overturns-the-veto According to the Bee: “After Utah Governor Spencer Cox, who included his pronouns in his Instagram account, cowardly vetoed a bill that would prevent men from competing in women's sports under the guise of transgenderism, the Utah legislature stood up and defied the RINO governor.” From the Washington Times: “The Utah State Legislature voted Friday to override Republican Gov. "There is in fact a lot that is unknown." Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enOn May 13, a Ukrainian court placed pro-Kremlin oligarch and lawmaker Viktor Medvedchuk under round-the-clock house arrest pending trial for high treason. The country's Prosecutor General had signed off on the charges two days earlier, indicting not only Medvedchuk, but also his closest ally and fellow lawmaker, Taras Kozak, in connection with three episodes of illegal activity. Both politicians belong to Opposition Platform — For Life, a pro-Russian opposition party that holds 44 seats in the Ukrainian parliament. But Medvedchuk is perhaps best known for his murky business dealings and personal ties to Vladimir Putin (the Russian president is said to be the godfather of Medvedchuk's youngest daughter). The treason charges came a few months after the Ukrainian authorities imposed sanctions on Kozak and Medvedchuk for allegedly financing terrorism. As part of these sanctions, Kozak's three pro-Russian television channels were taken off the air. The Ukrainian authorities also sanctioned Medvedchuk's wife and froze the couples' assets for three years. Medvedchuk has denied all of the allegations, claiming that the charges are politically motivated. That said, prosecuting Medvedchuk coincides with other steps the Ukrainian government is taking to combat corruption and oligarchic influence. Moreover, this is happening at a time when President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to be changing his stance on Russia and his approach to resolving the conflict with Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine's east. To discuss Viktor Medvedchuk's Kremlin ties and his place in the Ukrainian political landscape, as well as what the Zelensky government is doing to combat oligarchic influence in Ukraine, “The Naked Pravda” turned to independent journalist and disinformation researcher Olga Tokariuk, a freelance correspondent in Kyiv for the Spanish EFE news agency. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Saturdays (or sometimes Fridays).
