The Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid Is The Perfect Electrified SUV. For Some.

Pure electric vehicles don't work for everyone. The Ford Escape plug-in hybrid does. The concept is simple enough, charge the 14.4 kWH battery and it's fully electric for 37 miles. After that it defaults to a regular hybrid with an EPA rated average of 40 MPG. And the Escape PHEV is a useful crossover that does the chores well. Fun to drive too. But if you want all-wheel drive with your plug-in….  maybe visit a Toyota dealership for a RAV4 Prime or get Escape's fancy sister, the Corsair Grand Touring. Tom Voelk takes a look at a fully loaded Titanium model to find out if it really goes 37 miles on a charge and what the real fuel economy is.  And while Ford calls the 4thgeneration Escape, I see it as the 3rd gen (the “2nd generation” is a heavy mid-cycle refresh IMHO).

Benjamin talks about his experience in the new 2021 Ford Bronco Wildrak, and explores how the Blue Oval has worked to keep up with the legacy and momentum of the Jeep Wrangler. Was the Wrangler as easy of a target as Ford thought it was? Benjamin decides whether the Bronco beats its Jeep bogey in any meaningful way, and whether the hype machine surrounding the Ford is warranted. The Sami jumps into the newly-electrified 2021 Ford Escape PHEV, and wonders if this vehicle was made to satisfy an eco-cred quotient, or if it had an intended target in the market. With 37 miles of consistent electric range to compare to the Tucson PHEVs 33 and RAV4 Prime's 42, is the Escape a happy medium between the two? Finally, the pair dive into a new segment this week, talking about an entire class of vehicle that eluded the North American market—the kei cars of Japan—before wrapping things up with a BMW M book review and a listener question. Tons of stuff to listen to this week, but don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments!

Does the 2021 Land Rover Defender capture the unobtanium spirit that made its predecessor such a legend in North America, or is it merely another good SUV from the British 4x4 brand? Sami spends time with the four-door Land Rover and is surprised by the impression it makes on him. Even more surprising? His newfound love for the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, whose plug-in hybrid drivetrain erases its previous sins. Benjamin has a more confusing experience with the 2021 BMW 228i Gran Coupe. It's the most affordable BMW out there, but does it make the best introduction to the brand? And are there better choices for the same money in BMW's own showroom?

Show #879   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 31st August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA MODEL 3 WINS 1ST & 2ND  AT PIKES PEAK "The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, welcomed three Tesla Model 3s to the field on August 30. America’s Mountain was taken on by three unique Tesla racecars, driven by Blake Fuller, Josh Allen and Randy Pobst. Two of those cars took 1st and 2nd place." says Tesmanian: "Blake Fuller, in a 2018 Tesla Model 3, won the race with a best time in this, the 98th running, with an unofficial time of 11: 02.802. Randy Pobst was the runner up in the 2020 Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Ascen-R, with a second-best, unofficial time of 11: 04.131. During the first run of the second day of qualifying, Randy Pobst's Model 3 was hit hard at speed. It seemed that he would not be able to take part in the race on August 30th. However, the car was significantly overhauled and still ultimately achieved 2nd place in the event."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-model-3-wins-1st-2nd-place-in-exhibition-class-at-pikes-peak-2020   U.S. SUPPLY OF VW ID4 EXPECTED TO BE LIMITED "Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh told Automotive News Publisher Jason Stein in a podcast interview to be broadcast this week that ID4 supply is expected to be tight for U.S. dealers at least until production of the BEV begins in 2022 in Chattanooga." says Automotive News: "Volkswagen will use a centralized online reservation system in North America to accept initial $100 refundable deposits from consumers either online or from a VW dealership to hold their place in line for an ID4, Movassaghi said last week. Later, customers will be asked to go into the dealership or continue online to deposit an additional $400 to confirm their order and lock in their configuration. Both deposits will be fully refundable until the car is delivered. The actual sales price will still be set by the local dealer and could differ from the sticker price, which has not been disclosed. Keogh suggested that the ID4's sticker price would be "a tick over" $30,000, after available credits."   Keogh said: "Right now, there are a lot more mouths to feed than there [are] vehicles. We're going to continue to fight for every car. But we could probably use a few more."   https://www.autonews.com/mobility-report/us-supply-vw-id4-expected-be-limited   TESLA ROLLS OUT SOFTWARE UPDATE TO LET ITS CARS’ CAMERAS SEE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS. "Tesla is pushing a software update that will let its vehicles’ Autopilot system detect speed limit signs using their cameras. When the camera detects a speed limit sign, it will be displayed on the driver visualization in the car and used to set a speed limit warning, according to the software release notes." reports The Verge: "The latest software update also adds to its traffic light and stop sign control features, and will sound a chime when your Tesla is sitting at a stoplight that turns green. It’s only intended as a notification so it’s up to the driver to decide whether and when to actually move the car forward."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/30/21407438/tesla-software-speed-limit-self-driving-cars   ELECTRIC VEHICLES DESERVE A NEW EPA RANGE TEST "There are a number of factors that make an EV's EPA range unachievable in real-world driving at the highway speeds where range matters most. For starters, EVs can benefit from the EPA test's speed fluctuations via regenerative braking, which puts energy back into the battery. Most gas-powered vehicles can't do that." says Car & Driver: "This is why gasoline-powered vehicles regularly beat their EPA highway figures in our real-world 75-mph highway test, yet no EV has even matched its EPA range. An Audi e-tron came closest, missing its label value by 7 percent. All of this means that if you want an EV that can repeatedly drive 200 miles on the highway between charges, you'll need to look for one with an EPA range around 350 miles."   https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a33825136/evs-deserve-a-new-epa-range-test/   THE SECRET ADJUSTMENT FACTOR TESLA USES TO GET ITS BIG EPA RANGE NUMBERS "When it comes to EV range, Tesla appears untouchable. Despite pouring billions into electric-vehicle programs, established automakers have failed to make up much ground when it comes to the range game, and winning that game remains a crucial part of winning over buyers. So how does Tesla do it?" asks Car & Driver: "EVs are strapped to a dynamometer—essentially a treadmill for cars—and repeatedly run through a test regimen that ends only when the battery is depleted to the point that the vehicle can no longer maintain the required speed. the EPA allows automakers the option to run three additional drive cycles and use those results to earn a more favorable adjustment factor. Currently, only Tesla and Audi employ this strategy for their EVs, and Tesla scores the most advantageous results, with adjustments that range from 29.5 percent on the Model 3 Standard Range Plus to 24.4 percent on the Model Y Performance. If Tesla had used the standard adjustment factor of 30 percent, the Model Y Performance's window-sticker range would drop to 292 miles. But because Tesla takes advantage of the EPA's alternate methodology, the company can instead claim a 315-mile range."   Read more: https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a33824052/adjustment-factor-tesla-uses-for-big-epa-range-numbers/   LIGHTNING SYSTEMS LOWERS PRICES OF ELECTRIC POWERTRAINS WHILE ADDING AND ENHANCING FEATURES Commercial electric vehicle manufacturer Lightning Systems announced it is lowering the prices of its 2021 battery and fuel cell electric vehicles by 10 to 50% for Class 3 to Class 8 vehicles. n addition to lower prices, zero-emission vehicles from Colorado’s Lightning Systems also will have new features, including:   – High-speed Level 2 charging – Faster DC fast charging systems – Enhanced telematics and new remote software management features for fleet managers and drivers – In-cab display enhancements in all vehicles – Improved range and payload capacity from higher energy density battery solutions Lightning Systems’ electric commercial vehicles are built on familiar industry-leading chassis such as the Ford Transit 350HD, Ford E-450, Ford F-550 and Chevrolet 6500XD..   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/08/lightning-systems-lowers-prices-of-electric-powertrains-while-adding-and-enhancing-features/   GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES WILL HAVE CORVETTE-LEVEL ENGINEERING "InsideEVs has learned that the Corvette Engineering team, which contains some of the top talent at the automaker, is being moved from Global Products Programs to the Autonomous and Electric Vehicles program team, which is led by Ken Morris. While this may seem like snoozy corporate machinations to some, it's actually a pretty big deal." says InsideEVs: "To start, though, this doesn't mean that we should expect GM to announce an all-electric Corvette any time soon – the latest iteration of that storied model, the C8, just launched in July of last year and this generation could be expected to stay in production for maybe six or more years. The significance here is much deeper. Sure, we expect we'll eventually see an all-electric Corvette, but what this move is intended to do is put the same high-performance DNA that can be found in the C8 into the company's electric vehicles."   https://insideevs.com/news/441210/gm-corvette-engineering-team-ev/   TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME’S MYSTERIOUS ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM EXPLAINED  "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle (PHEV) with an unusual all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Unlike a conventional system which would connect the front engine to a rear differential to drive the rear wheels, the RAV4 Prime’s system has a gas engine and electric motor up front to drive the front two wheels, and a separate rear electric motor to drive the rear two wheels. There is no mechanical connection between the front and rear drive systems." writes Torqeu News: "In every possible drive mode configuration, the RAV4 Prime offers power to the rear wheels. The RAV4 Prime’s drivetrain can be configured for all-electric operation, a combination of electric and hybrid power called automatic, and also a hybrid-only mode for preserving battery range for later all-electric use. The rear electric motor can supply up to about 55 hp to the rear wheels based on the available traction and other factors. This setup makes the RAV4 Prime’s AWD system one that enables all-road and all-weather traction. In addition, the RAV4 Prime can be used on trails for some light off-road operation."   https://www.torquenews.com/1083/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-s-all-wheel-drive-system-explained   PROTERRA INTRODUCES NEW CUSTOMIZABLE BATTERY PACK FOR OEMS "Electric bus manufacturer Proterra expanded its battery pack offer for heavy-duty commercial vehicles (like school buses, coach buses, delivery vans, and other electric vehicles) by new, narrower H Series, which will fit into standard truck frame rails and increase packaging flexibility, compared to S Series." according to InsideEVs: " Depending on application, OEMs can customize and scale up the systems up to 6 MWh. In EV buses or trucks, usually a few hundred kWh is used. In the case of Bustech, from early 2021 the company will use a 450 kWh Proterra battery systems in 12.5 m ZDi meter transit buses, which should have range of up to 325 km (202 miles). At a high-power charging station, the battery will be recharged in two hours."   https://insideevs.com/news/440822/proterra-new-customizable-battery-pack-oems/   You can listen to all 878 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. This week we give our first impressions of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and talk about how it compares to the last outgoing model, and why this small SUV might have created a new size category for Chevy. Consumer Reports has teamed up with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (or IIHS for short) to recommend safe, reliable used cars and SUVs that are well-suited for teenage drivers, and cost $20k or less; our panel explains why this is an important market for buyers today, and which cars they would choose off the list. Also, we help a viewer decide between a new Toyota Venza hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Prime to replace his high-mileage Toyota Highlander, explain why all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles require all four tires to be changed at the same time, and pick a car we think would be perfect for a long trip to Mars.     -----------------------------------   Have a question for our experts? America loves SUVs and crossovers, but oddly, there are few mainstream electrified models out there. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime rectifies that. And there’s NO range anxiety at all. It’s all the electric you need. Charge Prime up and there’s 42 miles of all-electric range on tap. After that, a gas engine takes over for 600 miles of total range. It’s like a Chevy Volt (only Toyota seems to backing the Prime up with some marketing). Tom Voelk spent a couple days testing the RAV4 Prime and gives a full debrief on how the system works.

Show #810   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th June 2020. LUCID: DON'T CALL US "TESLA KILLERS" "With a brand-new, state-of-the-art factory nearing completion in the Southwest desert and an energy-dense battery pack using cylindrical cells, it's all-too tempting to set up a rivalry between Lucid Motors and Tesla. Heck, it's a trope that we've been guilty of using in the past." says Ars Technica: "But it's a bad take, according to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and CTO. "Please don't describe us as a Tesla killer," he told me. "The world's big enough that we can both thrive and prosper alongside each other.". the Air will use a 900V electrical architecture, higher than even the Porsche Taycan. Rawlinson said that the Air has also moved to a new in-house silicon carbide inverter, as well as a switch from induction to permanent magnet motors front and rear. The Air's cylindrical lithium-ion cells will be made by LG Chem, but Lucid has designed and will build the packs itself. And Formula E has contributed to the management of the packs—Lucid supplies batteries to all the teams in that race series. The company's experience in Formula E has taught it a lot about predictive modeling of degradation."   Peter Rawlinson was VP on Vehicle Engineering at Tesla before 2013.   He said: "They're our own design, which is very innovative—they've got very low cogging torque, so ultra-efficient. We've got our own epicyclic reduction transmission, our own differential, all which is super-innovative, state of the art. The rotor will spin to 20,000rpm, and each of those in standard form is rated at 600hp (447kW)," he said, adding that the combined motor, gearbox, differential, and inverter weighs in at just 160lbs (73kg). The key metric is volumetric power density, which is creeping up very close to 17kW per liter," Rawlinson told me. "And I think that's unprecedented—that's twice as good as any competitor out there that I'm aware of. That's a cornerstone of what we've done with LG Chem now in our production supply agreement. We've worked with them to help develop the cell chemistry to a much higher standard, particularly making it degrade less as a consequence of repeated fast charging. That's important because the 900V architecture has been developed very much with our fast-charge network partner Electrify America in mind."   Read the full interview here: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/06/please-dont-describe-us-as-a-tesla-killer-ars-talks-to-lucid-motors   VW ID.4 MAKES ITS BEST KIA IMPRESSION IN NEW SPY PHOTOS "In late March this year, our photographers caught a prototype of the Volkswagen ID.4 that was masked to look like an Opel Grandland X. The same strategy was used by the company’s engineers and test drivers in November last year, and they’ve done it again. This time around, however, they’ve disguised the all-electric crossover to look like a Kia." says Motor1.com: "According to preliminary information, power will be provided by two electric motors for a combined output of approximately 302 horsepower. The battery electric vehicle should be capable of covering up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) in the WLTP test at a single charge, which will be around 277 miles in the EPA evaluation."   https://www.motor1.com/news/428784/vw-id4-spied-again/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME VS 2020 FORD ESCAPE PHEV SPEC COMPARISON Price Ford: SE PHEV retails for $33,040, while the others are priced at $35,620 and $38,835 respectively. RAV4: Pricing has not yet been shared though we assume it will start around the $40k mark in the US, and somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000 in Canada.   "The Toyota RAV4 Prime is meant to do it all. The Prime is based on the Hybrid’s 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine however the hybrid is further boosted by the more powerful motor-generators and new high-capacity 17.8-kWh Lithium-Ion battery increase system output to 302-horsepower, from 219." says Motor Illustrated: "Part of the setup is an electric motor on the rear axle that has no physical link to the front. This second motor is standard on all RAV4 Hybrid and Prime thus all are AWD. Performance is plentiful with a 0-100 km/h time of only 6.2 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds). Fun fact: This makes the RAV4 Prime the second fastest accelerating Toyota after the GR Supra. The combined fuel consumption rating of 2.6Le/100km, or 90 MPGe. The battery-only range is 67 kilometers, or 42 miles. The 2020 Ford Escape PHEV is different in that it is FWD only, contrary to the Hybrid version,  which will prove to be an obstacle for much of Canada and the Northern regions of the US. It too is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and it, with the associated electric motor, produces a total system output of 221-horsepower. The 14.4-kWh battery-only range is rated at least 48 kilometers in Canada, or 37 miles in the US."   RAV4 - Heat pump too. 3kW onboard charger as standard.   https://motorillustrated.com/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-vs-2020-ford-escape-phev-spec-comparison/49408/   ELECTRIFY CANADA EXPANDS NETWORK OF HIGH-SPEED EV CHARGERS TO BRITISH COLUMBIA "With the opening of its first British Columbia station in Merritt, B.C, Electrify Canada today announces its official expansion into Western Canada. The high-speed electric vehicle charging network will also announce an additional eight charging station locations expected to open throughout the province by the end of this year." says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "Electrify Canada already has four charging station sites open in Ontario, with fifteen more in the planning stage in Ontario and Quebec, so it's good to see the western part of the country finally getting some love also.  Electrify Canada's first phase of deployment includes the installation of a total of 32 charging station sites. Those include the nineteen in Quebec and Ontario and thirteen in Alberta and British Colombia."   https://insideevs.com/news/428806/electrify-canada-expands-british-columbia/   TESLA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BECOME AN ELECTRIC UTILITY PROVIDER IN THE UK "Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets." says Simon at TEslarati: "The UK’s recent approval for Tesla’s application is a noteworthy milestone for Tesla Energy, whose potential remains largely untapped. Tesla Energy is a big business, and it builds on two of the company’s most prominent strengths: software and batteries. This is one of the reasons why Tesla’s big battery in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, has been so successful. The massive Powerpack farm is managed by Autobidder, the same system that the company is reportedly poised to utilize in the UK."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-energy-utility-provider-application-uk-approved/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E CUSTOMERS TO RECEIVE 250 KWH ELECTRIFY AMERICA CREDIT Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will receive 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging through FordPass Rewards at Electrify America fast-charging stations to kick-start their electric vehicle experience with Ford. For Mustang Mach-E owners with the extended-range battery, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast- charging energy is equal to more than three fill-ups. For standard-range battery models, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast charging energy is equal to more than five fill-ups. This is in addition to the two years of complimentary access Mustang Mach-E customers automatically receive to the recently expanded FordPass Charging Network for easy pay-as-you-go charging. Electrify America’s network, part of the FordPass Charging Network, offers the largest number of high-powered public charging stations on the market today.   100 KWH TESLA MODEL 3 APPEARS ONLINE "We learned late last year from Twitter user @greentheonly that Tesla’s Model 3 firmware had contained references to a 100 kWh battery pack since at least March of 2019. Speculation was interesting at the time, but no Model 3 vehicles had been found to include that size battery pack." writes The Street.com: "That may have changed today, with Twitter user @zeus7f1 sharing a screenshot of a Tesla Model 3 display in Factory Mode. While a screenshot like this could be easily faked, the pack size is listed as 100 kWh here."   33% more energy. Long LONG Range?   @greentheonly: I know they exist. Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum -  maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The electric motor has an output of 87kW, providing a maximum speed of 93mph (self-limited) and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 9 seconds and zero to 31mph in 3.1 seconds. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system.   MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now.  . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later   "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW."   38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review   The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #793   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th May 2020. TESLA MODEL 3 WAS THE BEST SELLING CAR IN Q1 2020 "Great news comes from California, where - despite the general market slowdown - some electric cars noted brilliant sales results - including #1 for the Tesla Model 3! According to the California New Car Dealers Association, the overall market was 507,646 (down 4.3% year-over-year from 530,402) and the forecast for 2020 is quite depressing - 1.54 million vehicles." Says InsideEVs: "Four all-electric cars were in the forefront of their  categories and two of them were #1:   Tesla Model 3 (18,856, up 19.3%): #1 in Near Luxury (52.2% share) Tesla Model X (2,826, up 10.9%): #3 in Luxury Mid Size SUV (10.3% share) Chevrolet Bolt EV (2,654, up 16.1%): #1 in Subcompact (22.2% share) Tesla Model S (1,561, down 27.0%): #3 in Luxury and High End Sports Cars (11.7% share)"   Tesla Model 3 - the best selling car The first quarter of 2020 positively surprised us with the first place among all types of cars, not only passenger but also SUV/trucks, for the all-electric Tesla Model 3:   Tesla Model 3 - 18,856 Honda Civic - 18,001 Toyota Camry - 17,871 Toyoa RAV4 - 17,261 Toyota Corolla - 15,575 Honda Accord - 12,551   https://insideevs.com/news/426084/california-tesla-model-3-best-selling-q12020/   TESLA SOLVES MODEL Y FROZEN DOOR HANDLES AND CHARGING PORT WITH SIMPLE TRICK "In his recent video, the JerryRigEverything host pointed out that the Model Y’s door handles, while visually identical to the first production Model 3s, actually feature improvements that make them less prone to getting stuck in ice. Tesla designed the Model Y’s door handles so that they can get physically pressed on both sides, allowing owners to break ice that has built up." Says Teslarati: "Just like door handles, it is very inconvenient to deal with a charging port that’s frozen solid. Tesla owners have dealt with this issue in a variety of ways, such as preheating their vehicles for some time to melt away the ice. But for the Model Y, Tesla has adopted a heated charging port, which should proactively avoid ice from building up. This should allow owners to conveniently plug and unplug their Model Y despite temperatures being below zero"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-frozen-door-handles-charging-port-fix-video/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME PRICE ANNOUNCED, STARTS AT $38,100 "Toyota dropped a bit of a surprise last November at the LA Auto Show. It wasn’t that Toyota announced a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4 called the RAV4 Prime – that was expected. What we didn’t expect was that it would pack 302 combined horsepower (225 kilotwatts) and hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. That’s not exactly slow, and now we know how much it will cost to have a hot-rod Toyota SUV that’s also good on gas." reports Motor1: "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime starts at $38,100, not including $1,120 in destination and delivery charges. It's still under $40,000 with that upcharge factored in, but it's also the most expensive RAV4 Toyota offers."   https://www.motor1.com/news/426090/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-cost/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC SOLD 700 SINCE LAUNCH "The Mercedes-Benz EQC has been talked about for years. It's seen as compelling to many, not only because it's a Mercedes crossover, but also because it should work well to compete with Tesla. It was supposed to launch in the U.S. soon, if not already, but the EV has been delayed until 2021. Perhaps once the EQC is available on our 'SUV-friendly' shores, it will find more success." Says InsideEVs: "In the meantime, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, the luxury automaker only sold 397 EQC's in 2019, following by just 276 so far this year in its home country.  Mercedes hasn't officially reported these sales figures, so they could be better or worse officially. However, even if they're within a range of some 500 to 1,500 sales, the situation is clearly dire. This is especially true since Mercedes has been promoting the vehicle heavily, and has plans to produce some 50,000 units this year. Despite the global pandemic, EV sales have been respectable, if not solid, in Germany and Europe. In fact, over the last year, Audi sold 4,500 e-trons and Tesla sold 8,700 Model 3 sedans in Germany."   https://insideevs.com/news/426003/mercedes-eqc-sales-poor/   WHEN THE BOSS HAS TO QUEUE Raf Fiol @raf_fiol   I just met  @elonmusk at a supercharger!  And he talked to me! More details...  this was after the scrubbed SpaceX launch yesterday.  I was at the Melbourne, FL supercharger.  I was standing next to my car when a white Model X backed into a stall two cars down. I looked over as the passenger door opens and I see ... I see him get out and he starts walking towards me.  I’m obviously surprised and he definitely sees that.  I blurt out “Elon?”, and he smiles and continues to walk towards me.  He says ... He says something to the effect of “thank you for being a Tesla owner and supporting the mission."  A small crowd begins to form.  We talked about the scrubbed launch, the Model Y, and auto insurance in FL.  Someone then... congratulated him on the birth of his son and he looks over at his Model X and said “thank you, he’s in the car.”  At some point the Falcon doors open and out comes Grimes to hand him a mask!  He stuffs it in his pocket as she hurries back to the car. He stayed and talked for at least 15 minutes.  He was super friendly and seemed genuinely interested to hear what people had to say.  Super duper cool guy.  It was an absolutely amazing experience! He arrived in a white Model X, followed by another white Model X.   Notice the line of men in black suits in the background. Elon’s security duty.   NEW AUDI CEO SETTING UP ARTEMIS PROJECT "Two months after taking office as the new CEO at Audi, Markus Duesmann is establishing a unit for the accelerated development of additional automobile models. Artemis will focus on new technologies for electric, highly automated driving with a specific model reference. Its first task is to create a highly efficient electric car that is scheduled to be on the road as early as 2024. " according to Green Car Congress: "Hitzinger will work with a team of automotive and technology experts to—as a first step—“develop a pioneering model for Audi quickly and unbureaucratically,” says Duesmann. Resources and technologies of the entire Volkswagen Group are potentially available for this. Duesmann and his Volkswagen Group colleagues also expect the Artemis project to provide a blueprint for the future agile development of cars throughout the Volkswagen Group."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200530-artemis.html   LARGEST ELECTRIC AIRPLANE YET TAKES OFF IN THE USA "The companies magniX and AeroTEC have announced the successful maiden flight of the allegedly world’s largest all-electric aircraft, an all-electric Cessna Grand Caravan 208B. The half-hour flight in the US state of Washington apparently went without a hitch." Says elective: " The aircraft is an 18-year-old Cessna Grand Caravan, which was converted to an electric propulsion system with a magni500 electric motor by the engineering firm AeroTEC.  The goal is to be able to fly the distance of 160 kilometers with full load by the end of 2021. The Cessna Grand Caravan 208B can carry a maximum of 14 passengers – instead of four to five in the eCaravan at present. This is to be made possible by new batteries, such as lithium sulfur batteries. A switch to fuel cells is also still in the pipeline."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/29/largest-electric-airplane-yet-takes-off-in-the-usa/         QUESTION OF THE WEEK   What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 227 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #647   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUDI REVEALS ITS SECOND ELECTRIC CAR, THE E-TRON SPORTBACK  The Verge reports: "Audi just pulled the wraps off of the E-Tron Sportback, the company’s second electric car, at the 2019 LA Auto Show. Coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, the top-tier version of the new premium EV will offer up to 446 kilometers of range (277 miles) and is powered by dual electric motors with a total power output of 265kW, or around 350 horsepower. A slightly less powerful version of the Sportback with a smaller battery will start at €71,350 (around $79,000)."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/19/20973020/audi-e-tron-sportback-sedan-la-auto-show-2019   According to TechCrunch: "Audi has delivered 18,500 of its all-electric e-tron SUVs globally since March 2019 when the vehicle first came to market. Audi plans to offer two variants of the vehicle, a Sportback 50 and Sportback 55. The Sportback will come to Europe first in spring 2020. The Sportback 55 will come to the U.S. in fall 2020. The 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback has a 86.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack that has a range of up to 446 kilometers (277.1 miles) in the EU’s WLTP cycle. The EPA estimates aren’t out yet, but expect the range numbers to be slightly lower. The company is targeting an EPA range of about 220 miles over the 204 miles of range that the regular e-tron gets."   https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/19/audis-next-all-electric-vehicle-the-e-tron-sportback-is-a-coupe-suv/   2019 AUDI E-TRON RECEIVES A 5-STAR US NCAP RATING The 2019 Audi e-tron, the first fully-electric Audi model, has earned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program’s maximum overall safety rating of five stars in its latest series of tests. Additionally, standard automatic emergency braking is offered as part of Audi pre sense® front. Using a front-mounted camera, the e-tron can help initiate braking at speeds of up to 52 mph for detected pedestrians and bicyclists in front of the vehicle and can bring a vehicle to a full stop when traveling at speeds under 35 mph based on IIHS tests.   GOOGLE MAPS 10.30 PREPARES TO LET YOU PAY FOR EV CHARGING AND FIND COMPATIBLE PLUGS "Google Maps 10.30 for Android has added strings that suggest it will support making payments straight from the app." says XDA Developers: "These features are not yet live in the Google Maps app for Android. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. With new electric vehicles on the way, the Maps app is long overdue for new functionality."   https://www.xda-developers.com/google-maps-10-30-electric-vehicle-charging-payments-compatible-plugs/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME HAS 302 HP "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was introduced here at the L.A. Auto Show, and although it doesn't have much in the way of visual differentiation, its spec sheets pops with eye-opening stat after another." reports AutoBlog; "It produces a total system output of 302 horsepower, making it the most powerful compact SUV from a non-luxury brand. Toyota says it'll also go from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. As for eco credentials, the RAV4 Prime can go an estimated 39 miles on its battery alone, which is better than any current plug-in hybrid SUV and behind only the Polestar 1, Chevrolet Volt (soon-to-be-discontinued) and Honda Clarity. Even the Toyota Prius Prime manages only 25 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/20/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-revealed   TESLA ‘HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ‘SUPERCHARGER FIRE,’ SAYS LOCAL FIRE OFFICIAL "A fire was reported to have been caused by a Tesla Supercharger at a Wawa store in New Jersey last weekend, but a local fire official now says Tesla had nothing to do with the cause of the fire." says electrek: "The next day, a Wawa spokesperson told CNBC that the issue was with the Supercharger station. But now we learn that Tesla had actually nothing to do with the fire. Matthew Palmeiri, who works for Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire Department District 5, told Automotive News that Jersey Central Power & Light had a problem with a transformer next to the Tesla Supercharger"   https://electrek.co/2019/11/19/tesla-had-nothing-to-do-with-supercharger-fire-says-local-fire-official/   KARMA REVERO GTS DEBUTS WITH MORE RANGE " the GTS knocks over a half-second off the sprint to 60 mph. The Revero GTS requires just 3.9 seconds for the trip, and with the accelerator firmly pinned it will keep pulling to an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph." writes Motor1.com: " The Revero GTS can travel 380 miles when using its range-extending BMW-sourced three-cylinder engine to generate electricity. Fully charged, its upgraded battery pack can power the Revero 80 miles without the engine kicking in. Throughout all this, total output is actually the same 536 horsepower that you’ll find on the Revero GT, which makes the performance enhancements on the GTS even more impressive."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383268/karma-revero-gts-debuts/   PORSCHE TAYCAN CARB CERTIFICATION REVEALS UP TO 282 MILES OF RANGE And staying with Motor1: "An eagle-eyed TaycanEVForum.com member posted a copy of the Porsche Taycan’s CARB (California AirResource Board) certificate that hints at the EV sedan’s real-world electric range. The document reveals the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S returning 281.8 and 282.7 miles, respectively. However, this isn’t the first time CARB’s number exceeded estimates. The board certified the Jaguar I-Pace with 334 miles of range, which far exceeds the 234-mile range given by the U.S. EPA. There’s a significant chance that when the EPA tests the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, its numbers could be closer to our estimates or even lower, possibly hovering around 200 miles."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383241/porsche-taycan-range-estimate-carb/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
