Chief of the Fair Police Scottie Scheffler has a three-shot lead heading into Sunday of the PGA Championship as Andy and Brendan return to break down the third round. There's plenty of Chief Scottie talk following his incredible back nine, including a new soundboard clip to replace last night's sirens. A lengthy Contender or Pretender? segment follows, with Andy and Brendan discussing Bryson DeChambeau (and his post-round quotes) and a seemingly resurgent Jon Rahm. PJ wraps things up with a quick Regions Tradition update ahead of TWO major championships being decided tomorrow evening.
Andy and Brendan! went live on YouTube as play wrapped up to recap an... eventful... Thursday at Quail Hollow. They discuss the supergroup of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy's struggles both on and off the course, the ongoing debate over the "fairness" of mudballs, and take a look at a different leaderboard than we've been used to at recent major championships. They also hit on Phil Mickelson tying his worst-ever round at a PGA Championship, some more major disappointment for Joaquin Niemann, and were still live as Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas, and Bryson DeChambeau wrapped up their Thursdays. The Regions Tradition is briefly covered after Richard Green's record-breaking round at Greystone.

Scott McCarron and I talk about his recent performance at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic and we look ahead to the back-to-back majors they have coming up at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship. I asked him about the golf ball distance issue since his average driving distance hasn't changed much at age 58 since his days playing on the PGA Tour. We also talked about the potential of Tiger playing on the Champions Tour. He said based on conversations he's had, it looks like Tiger will play several tournaments a year but he goes on to say that their "supposed leader" PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, didn't like it when the Champions Tour ratings beat the PGA Tour's the week Phil played his first Champions Tour event. When I asked why, isn't it all in the family, he said you'll have to ask Jay Monahan that question.
Paul Stankowski is one of my favorite people on the planet. I had the privilege of catching up with Paul at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic and again as he prepares for the Regions Tradition. We go back to 1996 when he became the first player to win in back-to-back weeks on the Nike Tour and then on the PGA Tour at the Bell South Classic. We get inside what it was like for him in an 8-day span to go from being a first-time winner on the Nike Tour to being the 6th alternate for the Bell South Classic, getting into that tournament, winning it, and the next day driving up Magnolia Lane.

Martinez had four of the Red Sox’s 19 hits. The White Sox fell for the fourth time in seven games. José Abreu hit a two-run homer and Tim Anderson had two hits, including an RBI single for Chicago. Cubs 11, Reds 4 – Schwindel hits 2 homers, Cubs power past Reds 11-4 Frank Schwindel homered twice in a game for the first time in his career, Marcus Stroman recovered from a rough start to pitch five effective innings, and the Chicago Cubs rolled past the Cincinnati Reds. Schwindel has three homers in the first two games of Chicago’s four-game series at Cincinnati. The Cubs have hit a major league-leading 19 homers since May 14, going deep in 10 of 11 games. Stroman needed 37 pitches to get through the first, allowing four singles and two runs to the first five batters. But he cruised after that, retiring 14 of his final 16 batters with two walks. After Kelsey Mitchell pulled Indiana within 93-90 with 21.8 seconds left, Vandersloot sank two free throws to seal it. Mitchell scored 25 points for Indiana. NFL – Changes under new coach Matt Eberflus hit Bears defense Personnel, position change and even weight loss have been some of the changes to affect the Chicago Bears defense since the start of spring work in organized team activities during coach Matt Eberflus’ first season. The switch to a 4-3 defense from a 3-4 meant some players switched positions, such as linebacker Roquan Smith. New players such as linebacker Nicholas Morrow, rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon and rookie safety Jaquan Brisker are getting extensive looks with the first team. All the while, the Bears are without veteran defensive ends Robert Quinn and Al-Quadin Muhammad, who have opted not to participate in voluntary offseason work. NFL – NFL revamps Rooney Rule to include quarterbacks coaches The NFL has expanded the Rooney Rule again, this time to include quarterbacks coaches in a further effort to diversify the coaching ranks. The change was announced Tuesday at the owners meeting in Atlanta by Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. The oft-criticized Rooney Rule, adopted in 2003 to enhance opportunities for minorities to gain head coaching jobs and enhanced several times to include front office positions, now will requires one minority or female candidate from another team to be interviewed for quarterbacks coach. Previously, the rule covered head coach, general manager and all coordinator jobs. The Russian earned his first victory since undergoing hernia surgery nearly two months ago. He had lost his opening-round match at the Geneva Open last week on his return. The previous CBA expired at midnight, with the CFL Players’ Association directing players from seven of the nine teams to participate in a work stoppage beginning at 12:01 a.m. EDT Sunday. It was the most intense rainfall the series has competed in since 2018. Race runner-up Simon Pagenaud suggested adding a windshield wiper to the cars. Frye said series officials also will look into whether the use or non-use of tear-off covers by teams could have played a part Saturday. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 5, Baltimore Orioles 1 New York Yankees 5, Chicago White Sox 1 Chicago Cubs 3, Arizona Diamondbacks 2 Tigers 5, Orioles 1 – Cabrera homers, Skubal strikes out 11 as Tigers top Orioles Miguel Cabrera blasted his 505th career home run, Tarik Skubal equaled his career high with 11 strikeouts, and the Detroit Tigers completed their first series sweep this season by defeating the Baltimore Orioles 5-1. Cabrera had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in two more for the Tigers, who have won three straight. Harold Castro added three hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Skubal lasted six innings, limiting Baltimore to three hits and two walks. Trey Mancini’s homer off Rony Garcia in the ninth prevented the Orioles from being shut out in back-to-back games. Yankees 5, White Sox 1 – Cortes pitches 8 crisp innings as Yankees beat White Sox 5-1 Nestor Cortes pitched a career-high eight innings and the New York Yankees took advantage of Michael Kopech’s one wild stretch by beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1. New York managed just two hits: a second-inning single for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a two-run homer by Joey Gallo in the ninth. But it was more than enough, thanks to the crafty Cortes. The 27-year-old left-hander allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none. Adam Engel homered for Chicago, and Kopech pitched six innings of one-hit ball. He gave up four walks, and the Yankees took advantage. Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2 – Schwindel’s go-ahead hit in 9th lifts Cubs over Arizona Frank Schwindel hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2. Patrick Wisdom and Rafael Ortega also homered for the Cubs, who have won four of six after a 3-14 stretch. Wisdom doubled to deep center field to lead off the ninth against Ian Kennedy and Schwindel reached out and hit a soft line drive over first base. Arizona lost its first series in six. The Diamondbacks had won their previous last five one-run games — they are 7-4 in one-run games this season after going was 10-31 in such games last season. Tonight Detroit (Faedo 0-1) at Tampa Bay (Kluber 1-2), 6:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Pittsburgh (Wilson 0-2) at Chicago Cubs (Miley 0-0), 7:40 p.m. Chicago White Sox (TBD) at Kansas City (Keller 1-3), 8:10 p.m. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Playoffs – 2nd Round Yesterday Boston Celtics 109, Milwaukee Bucks 81 (BOS Wins 4-3) Dallas Mavericks 123, Phoenix Suns 90 (DAL Wins 4-3) End Round 2 NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs – 1st Round Yesterday New York Rangers 4, Pittsburgh Penguins 3 – OT (NYR Wins 4-3) Calgary Flames 3, Dallas Stars 2 – OT (CGY Wins 4-3) End Round 1 WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Atlanta Dream 85, Indiana Fever 79 Dream 85, Fever 79 – Howard scores 33 points to help Dream beat Fever 85-79 Top-pick Rhyne Howard had a career-high 33 points — the most in any WNBA game this season — to help the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 85-79. In a game that featured the two top picks in last month’s draft, Howard made 9-of-18 from the field and 12-of-17 from the free-throw line with three steals. Indiana’s NaLyssa Smith, who was picked second, had 18 points before leaving the game with about 6 1/2 minutes left due to a right ankle injury. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 27 points, her third consecutive game scoring at least 24. NASCAR – Kurt Busch wins for MJ Kurt Busch pinched his way past Kyle Larson for the lead with eight laps to go, then drove his gaudy Jordan Brand-styled car away from the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion to win Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway. It was the second win for the up-and-coming 23XI Racing team owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, who followed the two leaders and Kyle Busch across in fourth place. Bubba Wallace won the team’s first race last year at Talladega. Golf – PGA – Lee rallies to win Nelson for 2nd straight year K.H. Lee has successfully defended his Byron Nelson title. Lee fired a 9-under 63 for a one-shot victory over local favorite Jordan Spieth (speeth) at birdie-besieged TPC Craig Ranch. Lee’s 240-yard shot on the par-5 12th hole stopped less than 5 feet from the pin, and the eagle put him in front for good. Spieth shot a 67 to finish a stroke ahead of Hideki Matsuyama and Sebastián Muñoz (69), who held or shared the lead the first three rounds. Matsuyama shot a 62 and Xander Schauffele had a career-best 61 to finish in a tie for fifth. Golf – Champions – Stricker completes dominant performance Steve Stricker completed at a wire-to-wire victory in the Regions Tradition, closing with a 4-under 68 for a six-stroke victory and his fourth PGA Tour Champions major title. Stricker’s second Tradition win at Greystone Golf & Country Club came in his third event since returning from a six-month absence for health reasons. Two straight birdies punctuated the dominant performance. Paidrag Harrington finished second, birdieing the final two holes for a 68. Steven Alker was in the group at 14 under after a 72. Golf – LPGA – Australian Lee hangs on to win Founders Cup LPGA scoring leader Minjee Lee made her only three birdies on the back nine and captured the Cognizant Founders Cup by two shots over Lexi Thompson. The 25-year-old Australian took the lead for good with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole at Upper Montclair Country Club. She closed with a 2-under 70 for a 72-hole total of 19-under 269 in the event that honors the 13 founding members of the LPGA Tour. Lee won her seventh career title and first since taking her first major at last year’s Evian Championship. CFL – 3 CFL teams cancel opening practices amid work stoppage Three Canadian Football league teams canceled their opening training-camp practices Sunday, a day after the league and players union broke off negotiations on a collective bargaining agreement. The Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts canceled practices, with more teams expected to follow suit. The previous CBA expired at midnight, with the CFL Players’ Association directing players from seven of the nine teams to participate in a work stoppage beginning at 12:01 a.m. EDT Sunday. Players with the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders reported to their camps because they will not be in a legal strike position under Alberta laws until later this month. The lone previous CFL strike came in 1974 and was resolved before the start of the season. IndyCar – IndyCar’s aeroscreen gets mixed reviews in 1st rain test IndyCar officials will spend the next few days collecting information and gathering advice about improving aeroscreen visibility for races held in the rain. Many drivers complained Saturday that they struggled to see other cars late in the IndyCar Grand Prix — even though each has flashing red lights. It was the most intense rainfall the series has competed in since 2018. Race runner-up Simon Pagenaud suggested adding a windshield wiper to the cars. Frye said series officials also will look into whether the use or non-use of tear-off covers by teams could have played a part Saturday. It was a jam-packed weekend of golf and this Monday episode jumps right into it by flipping a coin and starting with a review of the Walker Cup. Andy and Brendan nominate their favorite “breakout” players from the weekend, what they loved most about Seminole, and wonder why there’s not a push to make this more of a top 10 event in the entire game. Is such a push or goal to make this bigger even desired or possible? Then they’re on to the professional game and a course and format that stood out in stark contrast to the Walker Cup. But of course there was the Prince of Ponte Vedra redeeming it all and getting back in the winner’s circle. They discuss his “drought” and if it even was a drought, his abandoning of his draw thanks to modern equipment, and the energy a Rory charge brings to an event. There’s also the matter of the Thicc Boi’s flight hijinks. On the LPGA, they discuss the scenes of Ariya bawling after winning her home event and also ending a drought of her own. The Regions Tradition recap turns into a segment on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers fans uneasiness. They close with the anti-thirstbucket of the week, a frugal Longhorn who has made millions playing golf but was so upset about a $1.95 charge on his food bill that he had to instagram about it.

Congrats to Steve Stricker for his first major of his career. He shoots a -4 on Monday to win the rain delayed Regions Tradition, the first major of the year for the PGA Tour Champions. Steve is such an easy guy to root for, it is great to see him get it done! Sung Kang also got it done on the PGA Tour, winning the AT&T Byron Nelson, as he pulled away on the back nine. It was a very impressive round of golf, especially when you look at his data from 2018. He has put in some serious work, and now has the hardware to prove it. Let's get into the data that got it done for both these champions, and see what we can learn from their performances. Holly G and Jeff Shain, PGATour.com are in the studio talking about Rory McIlroy's domination of the Wells Fargo Championship. Jeff talked about McIlroy's being so efficient Saturday's round including 11 birdies to finish with a 61. A really good group of young golfers who are making this tour their own. Holly talks about the younger player wanting to learn from their missteps on the golf course and in major tournaments. Jeff pointed out that when you can talk about your mistakes on the course you can learn from them quicker. Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, calls in from to talk about the upcoming tournament at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Jeff Shain and Jeff Babineau talk about the successful Texas golfers of late. Both Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson were talking recently how close that both of them have been. Went with the short putter at the start and changes in shafts in his irons and went back to the belly putter. Was number one this time last year and now is not even in the Top 10 Babineau said. Holly asks Jeff about all the early talk about the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Babineau took a trip to the course recently and he said that it is different than other courses. More like a British Open course in that it is a hybrid between a links course and an American style course. Some may be frustrated with the course and others won't. It's the great unknown of the summer. Holly asks Jeff about Mike Davis and his approach to this year's U.S. Open. Put a bunker in the landing area and having some uneven surfaces on the tees or where the pins are located. Adam Scott talked about the Olympics and not being so tuned in to. It's not the end all to the sport of golf like in other sports. Jeff thinks that a lot of passion may rise up in some of the players playing for their countries at the Olympics. Holly mentions that Jeff Maggert posted his first win on the Champions Tour last week winning the Regions Tradition and this week is the Senior PGA Championship in Indiana, French Lick Resort. Brendan Sweeney, French Lick Resort, call in to talk about the Senior PGA Championship and the Pete Dye course. Colin Montgomery is the defending champion. Brendan talks about how the course is similar to Whistling Straits in Orlando area. He talks about the history of French Lick and how the town has been restored and revitalized. Julie Williams, Golfweek, calls in to talk to Holly G and Jeff about the NCAA women's and men's championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton Fla. Julie feels that the Concession is a great challenge for the women's match play, which is the first for the women. Julie feels that with the sand all over the area it might be difficult for all the college coaches to get around quickly and visit their players. Julie feels that Washington might be the team to watch. Had two players go to the LPGA in the fall and they are still winning as a team. Jeff asks Julie about the new format for the girls, match play, and it will give a new look to the women's NCAA Championship. Unusual that the men and women will play at the same golf course in back to back weeks, The Concession, in Bradenton, Fla. The plan is to have it this way for the next couple of years. Julie thinks it is a good formula for the NCAA. Holly asks Julie about some of the players in the NCAA may make the jump to the Symetra Tour.
On the show this week, Barry & Will talk about the almost 59 of Roland Thatcher, the upcoming US Open at Chambers Bay, Patrick Reed's withdrawal from the BMW PGA and the Irish Open and the Ladies European Tour innovative move to a gap in the market in playing tournaments from Sunday to Wednesday. We review the events from last week on the main Tours. On LPGA Tour, 18 year old Minjee Lee won The Kingsmill Championship, on the Seniors Tour Jeff Maggert won his first Seniors Major at the Regions Tradition, on The European Tour James Morrison produced a flawless final round 69 to win The Open de España in and Rory McIlroy set so many records we lost count in winning his 2nd Wells Fargo Championship in imperious fashion, further cementing his World Number 1 status. To wrap things up, we look ahead to next week with events on The European Tour hosts its flagship event The BMW PGA Championship from Wentworth and the PGA Tour moves to the Crowne Plaza Invitational from Colonial Country Club.
Keegan Bradley has a tremendous record at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, however, despite opening with a 60 in last year's renewal, Bradley was overhauled by Sang Moon Bae. Dave Kelner and Mike Grenham are with you on this edition of the golf podcast to reflect on Martin Kaymer's Players' Championship victory and preview the Byron Nelson and Open de Espana. Mike also offers his thoughts on the Regions Tradition, this week's Senior Major Championship. http://serve.williamhill.com/promoRedirect?member=audiobooUK&campaign=DEFAULT&channel=will_golf&zone=1484172145&lp=0
