This guest harkens back to the original concept of this podcast. And she has possibly the most unusual band setup I have ever heard of. Welcome Maura Pond of Luna Honey. And this band has really captured my attention. They've got this new take on the no wave sound that spawned bands like Swans, Rhys Chatham, Theoretical Girls, and others. It's experimental music that's really accessible. Maura and I discover some similarities like being from the VA/DC area and procrastination. She talks about getting a bit of a late start in the whole “being in a band” thing. She spent most of her twenties going to shows in the DC area instead of performing in shows. But that's not to say she wasn't creating. She was recording on her own, figuring, maybe even counting on, no one ever hearing those songs. And no one will because that hard drive is long dead. She had (and still has) some pretty serious performance anxiety. But playing drums while hanging with future bandmate and future ex-husband Levi Flack, really helped her learn how to handle it. They formed Luna Honey and things have been complicated ever since. There's being in a band with her ex-huband Levi AND current partner Ben Schurr. There's delaying their sophomore album to write and record a completely new album with a completely different sound as a favor for an aunt who was dying. There's the collaborative album they did with Norman Westberg of Swans. And then there's the new album, Bound. It's their best and most diverse album to date. It's simultaneously experimental, haunting, spooky, and catchy. And Maura has some great stories to go with the music. So check them out wherever you get music and follow them @lunahoneymusic. "One Hand Up" Karen Haglof has had many lives--and she's lived them with creative poise and artistic grace. The Minnesota-born musician put herself on the musical map with Steve Almaas in the band The Crackers before joining the indie rock orchestra Rhys Chatham’s Ensemble. From there, and by the way, this is a clumsy expurgate list of Hagloff's accomplishments, she joined the Band of Susans with some of the Chatham’s crew. After that, she became chef of the East Village's beloved The Great Jones Cafe' where she created their famous brunch menu and then she went to medical school, knocked out her medical degree and then joined the hematology / oncology department of New York University Hospital from which she retired in May 2023. If this is making you feel like an underachiever, I get it. We're all feeling that way. The fact is, Karen Hagloff is extraordinary. Her fourth solo album One Hand Up is the winning continuation of a music career she put on hold until 2014. Along with guitarist Mario Viele and CP Roth on drums, it's a startling and bold entry into her fabulous discography. As Stereo Embers Dave Cantrell writes: From the beguiling, personal, damn near avant country romp of the opening title track, rich with sublty applied effects to the snaky phat throb of instrumental “Rte 66 Revisited” that closes this record thirteen tracks later like some kind of funk demon prowling out the door, One Hand Up is an enticement, a gambol, a salmagundi of enchantments mixed with sure-handed production and flat-out ace musicianship. It is, in short, a veritable soundtrack to the love story between joy and intensity." www.karenhagloff.com (http://www.karenhagloff.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Interview with Karen Haglof. One Hand Up is a collection of 14 songs that cover widely ranging sonic territory. The writing and production started prior to 2020 and was delayed by the pandemic. Because of a renewed interest in visual art, many of the songs on One Hand Up will be accompanied by visual components: hand-drawn 2D animation, motion graphics and video clips, addin up to a mixed media extravaganza. Prior to her career in medicine, Karen had been an active participant in the much-vaunted Minneapolis indie rock scene that gave the world the Replacements, Soul Asylum and Bob Mould's Husker Du among many others. Eventually, she left the MidWest for Manhattan and joined renowned avant-garde composer Rhys Chatham's Ensemble, one of the city's seminal guitar army / orchestras, leaving to join the Band of Susans with other veterans of Chatham's crew. After serving a stint a kitchen staff at the early years of East Village institution the Great Jones Café (and creating its legendary brunch menu), she entered medical school and didn't seriously pick up a guitar for decades. She returned to making music in 2014, while still actively practicing medicine with the Western Holiday EP following it with Perseverance and Grace, Palomino Steady Rocking, Tobiano Over the next four years gaining praise from outlets like NPR's All Things Considered, Guitar Girl Magazine, and Popdose among many others. Recently retired and back at music again, Karen freely credits receiving Jimmy Page and co's eclectic 1970 release at the age of 15 as being pivotal to her future musical explorations. Phill Niblock migrated to New York after completing a BA in economics at Indiana University, determined to pursue his passions: photography and film, often documenting jazz and modern dance performances. [Playlist below] But, despite having no formal musical training, he soon found himself inspired by the New York music scene and immersed himself in experimental music, specifically loud sound, microtonal work, minimalism, and drones, producing works of often epic length. Fifty years later we can see how influential he has been in these genres with his copious output of records, videos and films and having won numerous awards along the way. He has served as director of the Experimental Intermedia foundation for avant-garde music since 1985 and curates the record label XI. Niblock's films includes a series called The Movement of People Working, which features workers at work in mostly rural setting worldwide. Niblock has often collaborated with musicians, which include David First, Lee Renaldo, Thurston Moore, Susan Stenger, Al Margolis, and David Soldier as well as with me. He just turned 90. He and I first connected in the 1970s when he attended Rhys Chatham's presentation of my Spirit Voices in the Kitchen of the Broadway Central Hotel. He invited me to perform at his loft in Chinatown where he had just begin what has become a historic series. He came to my home sound studio on West End Avenue and West 77th Street for a session. I engineered and removed all the pauses from his solo cello work, making it a drone work. Phill's sunsets shone in our 1987 International TV Solstice. His Glittering Stream graced our Winter Solstice Celebration 2020. Topics discussed by Morrow and Niblock: immersion, Lenny Tristan, Empress Dowager Cixi, China, rule of thirds, photography, high fidelity, history of hifi, speakers, dark room techniques, New York City water, performances, listening to records as immersion, tenement life, Mingus, Ellington, Monk, alcoholism, loops, file storage, loud sound, tech and gear, sound editing, reel to reel, archives, old trains, wire recorders ...

Susan Stenger - Band of Susans - in conversation with David Eastaugh Band of Susans was an American alternative rock band formed in New York City in 1986 and active until 1996. It originally consisted of Robert Poss (guitar/vocals), Susan Stenger (bass/vocals), Ron Spitzer (drums), with Susan Lyall (guitar), Susan Tallman (guitar), and Alva Rogers (vocals). The band would undergo several permutations over the years, usually involving three guitarists. Poss, Stenger, and Spitzer were the band's core members throughout its duration. They originated in the New York noise rock scene, but due to their layered guitar sound were sometimes seen as the American counterparts to the UK shoegazing bands and also drew influence from modern experimental composers Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca.

As a boy, Tyler Hubby began making films and photographs. While in high school, he was mentored by then unknown director David Fincher. Later on, Tyler went on to study film and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute with "low-fi" underground film legend George Kuchar. His subversive and irreverent short films and videos detailing fetishism, co-dependency and bodily mutations have screened internationally, and are featured in Jack Sargeant's book Cinema Contra Cinema. Tyler has documented artists such as Faust, Keiji Haino, John Fahey, Jim O'Rourke, Rhys Chatham, Arnold Dreyblatt, Zeena Parkins, Jonathan Kane and Tony Conrad. Furthermore, he has edited over 30 documentary films. Most notable among them are The Devil and Daniel Johnston, a biography of mentally ill artist/musician Daniel Johnston; The Final Member which follows the curator of the Icelandic Phallological Museum as he attempts to complete his exotic penis collection; The Great Invisible, which won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW 2014. Tyler also served as an additional editor on the Oscar nominated Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. Tyler wrote and directed Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present, a feature documentary about iconoclastic multi-media artist Tony Conrad that was named as one the best films of 2017 by Artforum.

Composer/performer https://benneill.com (Ben Neill) is the inventor of the Mutantrumpet, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument, and is widely recognized as a musical innovator through his recordings, performances and installations. Neill’s music blends influences from electronic, jazz, and minimalist music, blurring the lines between digital media and acoustic instrument performance. Neill has recorded eleven albums of his music on labels including Universal/Verve, Thirsty Ear, Astralwerks, and Six Degrees. Currently he is an Artist in Residence at Nokia Bell Labs where he is exploring new modes of emotion transfer and communication between people using music, visual media, and hybrid instruments. Performances include BAM Next Wave Festival, Big Ears Festival, Lincoln Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Bing Concert Hall at Stanford, Getty Museum, Cite de la Musique Paris, Moogfest, Spoleto Festival, Umbria Jazz, Bang On A Can Festival, ICA London, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival, among many others. Neill has worked closely with many musical innovators including La Monte Young, John Cage, John Cale, Pauline Oliveros, Rhys Chatham, DJ Spooky, David Berhman, Mimi Goese, King Britt, and Nicolas Collins. Neill also leads concerts of La Monte Young’s The Second Dream of the High Tension Stepdown Line Transformer with an international brass ensemble; performances have recently been presented in New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Amsterdam, Huddersfield, Den Bosch, Oslo, Krems, Koln, Los Angeles, and Warsaw. Neill began developing the Mutantrumpet in the early 1980s. Initially an acoustic instrument (a combination of 3 trumpets and a trombone combined into one), he collaborated with synthesizer Robert Moog to integrate electronics. In 1992, while in residency at the STEIM research and development lab for new instruments in Amsterdam, Neill made the mutantrumpet fully computer interactive. In 2008 he created a new version of his instrument at STEIM, and returned there in 2016-17 to design Version 4.0 which made its debut 2019. See a more detailed history of the instrument https://benneill.com/portfolio/mutantrumpethistory/ (here). Other current projects include a collaboration with vocalist/composer Mimi Goese that explores the musical and poetic qualities of mathematics and science through collaborations with chaos mathematician Ralph Abraham and the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries. The new songs combine the interplay of Goese’s captivating vocals and the electroacoustic explorations of Neill’s self-designed mutantrumpet with sounds created from fractal mathematics and Hudson River environmental data. A native of North Carolina, Neill holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Manhattan School of Music. He studied composition with La Monte Young and was also mentored by composer/performer Jon Hassell in the early 1980’s. Since 2008 he has been a music professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey. BEN NEILL PRESS QUOTES “Ben Neill is using a schizophrenic trumpet to create art music for the people.” Wired Magazine “Ben Neill performs the Mutantrumpet, a super-instrument of his own design that he also uses to control lights and other elements in the show. The music is a dense, continously-shifting tapestry of electronic beats.” Wired Magazine “The avant-garde and EDM come together in music by Ben Neill & his mutantrumpet.” WNYC New Sounds/John Schaefer “A creative composer, genius performer, and inventor of the mutantrumpet.” Time Out NY “Ben Neill...
In this episode, I talk to Sarah Lipstate, a Los Angeles-based composer, and a guitarist. We cover topics such as making a living as a musician today, marketing your work, the things Sarah is currently struggling with, the relationship between her gear and her art, and much more. Biography Sarah Lipstate is a Los Angeles-based composer, most known for Noveller, her solo electric guitar project. Handling the guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it’s housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer. In 2014, Lipstate announced her signing with Fire Records. Fire released Noveller's latest full-length 'Fantastic Planet' in January 2015 and also re-issued Noveller's critically acclaimed albums 'No Dreams' and 'Glacial Glow' in early 2016. She's previously released records on No Fun Productions, Important Records, Weird Forest, Taiga, and her own imprint Saffron Recordings. Noveller has toured with Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Radiolab, Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, U.S. Girls, & Aidan Baker. Lipstate has collaborated with several renowned musicians, including JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Manorexia), Carla Bozulich (Evangelista, The Geraldine Fibbers), David Wm. Sims (the Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth). She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave, Parts & Labor, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, Ben Frost’s “Music for 6 Guitars” Ensemble, and Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. The dough starts rough, and after a few rolls, falls over itself, as it slowly starts to congeal. This piece is a flakey pie crust, in the school of Rhys Chatham or Glenn Branca. Set in 3 time, its 14 tracks were blind-recorded with the through-line of “record the same thing each time”. Obviously some variations emerged from the performances, and some from improvisation, and willful neglect. The crust gains its life from imperfections.
Sup Doc kicks off the jams w ROCKTOBER a month long line-up of music docs and great guests. We hit the stage with The Devil and Daniel Johnston with our guest, musician Kip Uhlhorn! The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2005 documentary film about the noted American musician Daniel Johnston. It chronicles Johnston's life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, edited by Tyler Hubby, and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal.Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002. The first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain. In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Cloudland Canyon’s ranks have included close friend Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Turing Machine, Moby) who died in 2009. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton) has joined the band.
The Lake met american minimalist composer and multi-instrumentalist Rhys Chatham during a soundcheck just before his latest concert in Copenhagen playing with Danish drummer Rune Kielsgård and bassist Jeppe Skovbakke. Chatham talks about the music he plays today, where it comes from, and eventually revisits his time as musical director at The Kitchen in 1970's New York, where his unique blend of minimalism and rock aesthetics was born.

In this interview, Chatham talks about going back to the trumpet but playing it with fewer effects; how his attendance at a 1976 Ramones show altered the course of his musical life; and how his music has evolved over time while retaining a distinctive compositional identity. Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007 NY underground legend Rhys Chatham performing live in Oslo August 2007. The insistent motorik rock n roll pulse that runs from Bo Diddley to Neu! to Tony Conrad to The Ramones is captured by Rhys Chatham, the crowd rapturously lost in the joy of repetition (as Hot Chip would have it) the sublime object always just over the horizon. He played as part of kosmische night events at the Oya Festival. This is a full performance of Guitar trio which been influential on groups like Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, Band of Susans, Helmut and the swans. “Written in 1977, Guitar Trio is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of the Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement.” http://www.myspace.com/rhyschatham http://www.rhyschatham.net Brought to you by Magz Hall and Jim Backhouse check out our website www.youarehear.co.uk Subscribe to the podcast you can get emails alerts sent to you direct everytime we update the feed. feedback www.myspace.com/youarehear YAH 2002-6 live radio sessions CD now available as download album via wippit YAH 2002-6 live radio sessions CD Hear us on www.totallyradio.com Podcast of the week in Time Out London!! One two three four, mais en boucle.
