fWotD Episode 2656: Worlds (Porter Robinson album) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 12 August 2024 is Worlds (Porter Robinson album).Worlds is the debut studio album by the American electronic music producer Porter Robinson, released on August 12, 2014, by Astralwerks. Initially known for his heavier bass-centric production, Robinson became increasingly dissatisfied with the electronic dance music (EDM) genre, believing it limited his artistic expression. In 2012, Robinson released his first song with a greater emphasis on melody, "Language", and decided thereafter to prioritize aesthetic and emotional qualities in his work. He was inspired by media that evoked nostalgia for his childhood, and wrote music integrating elements taken from anime, films, and sounds from 1990s video games.Robinson's primary inspirations for Worlds were Daft Punk's Discovery (2001) and Kanye West's Graduation (2007). Critics described the work as electropop, noting similarities to the styles of M83 and Passion Pit. In late 2013, a bidding war ensued to determine which label was to release the record. The album was preceded by four singles: "Sea of Voices", "Sad Machine", "Lionhearted", and "Flicker", and promoted with a tour in North America and Europe.Worlds was well-received by most critics, who praised it as innovative and forecasted a promising career for Robinson, though others felt the record lacked coherence or was unexciting. Retrospectively, the album was noted for its impact on the EDM scene. It charted in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands. Following Worlds's positive reception, Robinson felt pressured to write an appropriate follow-up work. As a result, he experienced a period of writer's block and depression, leading to the seven-year gap until his next studio album, Nurture (2021).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:52 UTC on Monday, 12 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Worlds (Porter Robinson album) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Moses over Zoom video! GRAMMY® Award-winning duo Bob Moses recently released their highly anticipated new albu, The Silence in Between, via the Los Angeles-based band's third full-length, released via Domino Recording Company/Astralwerks. In celebration of The Silence in Between's arrival, Bob Moses have shared a new single and video called “Hanging On,” a heavy-hearted but wildly life-affirming anthem. The follow-up to Bob Moses' JUNO Award-nominated 2020 project Desire and their first full-length since 2018's Battle Lines (featuring the hit single “Back Down”), The Silence in Between fully captures what they refer to as the “ambient psychic unrest” of the current moment. With its moody collision of house music and emotionally potent pop, the album emerged from a period of immense upheaval in the lives of Vancouver-bred musicians/producers Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance. The fourth single released from The Silence in Between, “Hanging On” perfectly reflects the album's duality of darkness and light, abounding in luminous melodies and effervescent rhythms even as Bob Moses speak to a certain weariness at the world around them. Directed by Adrian Villagomez and Derek Branscombe and produced by Repertoire, the video for “Hanging On” centers on a full-band performance of the track, playing for an intimate audience blissfully lost in the music. As the starkly lit visual unfolds, the ground around the stage begins to crumble away. In a profoundly moving metaphor for carrying on in troubled times, the chaos ultimately brings everyone closer together as they fight to lift each other up. Prior to the release of The Silence in Between, Bob Moses shared three hypnotic singles from the album: “Time And Time Again” (a November single accompanied by a spellbinding video); “Love Brand New” (a January release that cracked the Top 15 on the Alternative radio chart), and “Never Ending” (a February track praised by the likes of Clash, who hailed it as “indicative of the pair's creative passions, blending ethereal electronics with the subtle use of club tropes”). Bob Moses' first full-length since signing to Astralwerks in a unique global partnership with Domino Recording Co., The Silence in Between is the latest body of work in a dynamic catalog that also includes their acclaimed debut album Days Gone By — a 2015 release featuring such standouts as “Tearing Me Up,” a Top 15 US Alternative radio hit nominated for two GRAMMY® Awards, with a remix from RAC winning in the category of Best Remix Recording (Non-Classical).We want to hear from you! The podcast is back again—the second episode of the sixth season, and the 32nd episode overall, and Kevin welcomes independent music legend Anna-Lynne Long (Née Williams) to the virtual building. You might know her from her long running solo project, Lotte Kestner; you might know her as the frontwoman from the cult favorite Trespassers Williams; you might know her from a bunch of other things as well. They chop it up about how combining shoegaze and folk sounds like a disaster, why Kate Bush can be scary, the "Twin Peaks" tour in Seattle, and the collection of nine tunes Anna-Lynne selected to bring onto the show. It's also a great time to mention that she has a NEW ALBUM due out on February 11th! Her first since 2017, Lost Songs will be available on CD, as well as streaming services. For more information about the "award winning" music criticism site, Anhedonic Headphones, click here; for more info on all things Anna-Lynne, head to her Bandcamp page. SNBRN on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 12/14/21 About SNBRN - Kevin Chapman's introduction to dance music was at age 12 when he stumbled upon music from the likes of Fatboy Slim and Moby. In 2008 he got his first copy of the digital production software, Reason, and started producing his own dance music. Slowly but surely, he began to immerse himself in the LA and San Diego club scenes. By 2013, Kevin had completed multiple professional degrees in audio engineering and production. Shortly thereafter the vision for the SNBRN brand emerged and Kevin embarked on a new creative path. Recognizing the increasing popularity of deep house, indie dance, and nu disco Kevin envisioned a brand that combined all the best elements of each sub-genre while remaining instantly accessible. In May of 2014 the SNBRN project was launched with a series of viral covers and remixes. He was quickly met with a series of career milestones including: multiple HypeMachine chart topping releases, garnering tens of millions of plays on SoundCloud and YouTube, and direct support from Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. With official releases on Atlantic, Astralwerks, Spinnin' Records, Ultra, Republic and Sony, the SNBRN brand has rapidly solidified itself as an overnight sensation in the indie dance and house music worlds. The first SNBRN single ‘Raindrops feat. Kerli' was released January 20th on Ultra Records. “Raindrops” has already garnered over 14 million plays on Spotify and well over 2 million on SoundCloud. It also reached #2 on the HypeM Charts, #12 on the iTunes Dance singles chart, and #25 on Billboard's Electronic/Dance Music Chart. SNBRN's official remix of Marvin Gaye's “Sexual Healing” hit #1 on HypeM and quickly climbed into the Top 10 House chart on Beatport. Simultaneously, Chris Lake and Matroda's official remix of SNBRN's single “California” went #2 overall on Beatport. Over the summer of 2015, SNBRN hit the North American festival circuit with performances at the likes of Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo, Firefly, Hangout, Electric Forest, Lightning in a Bottle, CRSSD, Hard, & more In late January 2016, SNBRN released his original “Gangsta Walk” single which features an unreleased acapella from Nate Dogg, the first ever licensed original record since his death. Andrew Goldstone is a music business pioneer. As one of the first employees at Astralwerks he saw that label rise to critical acclaim and financial success in the mid 90's with his signing of Fatboy Slim and the label's work with the Chemical Brothers, Air, Basement Jaxx, Future Sound of London and others. Following that, he set up his F-111 imprint at Warner Bros. where he signed Green Velvet and had huge chart hits around the world with remixes of Green Velvet's “Flash” and Moloko's “Sing It Back”. After a stint at Ministry of Sound in New York where he signed Fischerspooner, Andrew went to law school and then joined the entertainment law firm of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks where he worked on ground breaking deals for Madonna, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Diddy and others. At the end of 2012, he moved to Red Light Management to manage Tiësto while also serving as the GM of Tiesto's record label, Musical Freedom Records. Andrew moved to Deckstar (now YM&U Group) in 2017 with Don Diablo who rose to be the 6th most popular DJ in the world while under his management and currently manages 3LAU, whose NFT drops have generated nearly $20M in sales this year, and Sullivan King.Connect with Lennon: Website: https://www.lennoncihak.comPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/lennoncihakMailing List: http://eepurl.com/dlYpxTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lennoncihak/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lennoncihakTwitter: https://twitter.com/LennonCihakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lennoncihak/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5eX_uxAUIwBC0gyKwCbqtwGuest Request: https://goo.gl/forms/8zs61IYiIXMLjFpX2
Ducky is a San Francisco bred and based producer and DJ who has been playing clubs since they were 13 (via fake ID vibes). For years they have been quietly shaping their sound - a range of melodic pop tunes and heavy rave bangers that stretch from uplifting to headbanging to full-on hardcore. After moving back to the West Coast from New York on a whim, Ducky quickly bubbled up in both the Los Angeles scene as well as online, boasting releases on Twitch star Ninja's collaborative compilation with Astralwerks, Zeds Dead's Deadbeats, and Jauz's Bite This, to name a few. They easily move through musical roles, premiering an Adult Swim select on Fader one day, throwing a sold out warehouse show in LA the next. Ducky's sound is able to transcend any one scene, with their music's raw emotionality and top-tier production earning cosigns ranging from Skrillex to NPR Music. https://www.instagram.com/quackhouse/

Composer/performer https://benneill.com (Ben Neill) is the inventor of the Mutantrumpet, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument, and is widely recognized as a musical innovator through his recordings, performances and installations. Neill’s music blends influences from electronic, jazz, and minimalist music, blurring the lines between digital media and acoustic instrument performance. Neill has recorded eleven albums of his music on labels including Universal/Verve, Thirsty Ear, Astralwerks, and Six Degrees. Currently he is an Artist in Residence at Nokia Bell Labs where he is exploring new modes of emotion transfer and communication between people using music, visual media, and hybrid instruments. Performances include BAM Next Wave Festival, Big Ears Festival, Lincoln Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Bing Concert Hall at Stanford, Getty Museum, Cite de la Musique Paris, Moogfest, Spoleto Festival, Umbria Jazz, Bang On A Can Festival, ICA London, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival, among many others. Neill has worked closely with many musical innovators including La Monte Young, John Cage, John Cale, Pauline Oliveros, Rhys Chatham, DJ Spooky, David Berhman, Mimi Goese, King Britt, and Nicolas Collins. Neill also leads concerts of La Monte Young’s The Second Dream of the High Tension Stepdown Line Transformer with an international brass ensemble; performances have recently been presented in New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Amsterdam, Huddersfield, Den Bosch, Oslo, Krems, Koln, Los Angeles, and Warsaw. Neill began developing the Mutantrumpet in the early 1980s. Initially an acoustic instrument (a combination of 3 trumpets and a trombone combined into one), he collaborated with synthesizer Robert Moog to integrate electronics. In 1992, while in residency at the STEIM research and development lab for new instruments in Amsterdam, Neill made the mutantrumpet fully computer interactive. In 2008 he created a new version of his instrument at STEIM, and returned there in 2016-17 to design Version 4.0 which made its debut 2019. See a more detailed history of the instrument https://benneill.com/portfolio/mutantrumpethistory/ (here). Other current projects include a collaboration with vocalist/composer Mimi Goese that explores the musical and poetic qualities of mathematics and science through collaborations with chaos mathematician Ralph Abraham and the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries. The new songs combine the interplay of Goese’s captivating vocals and the electroacoustic explorations of Neill’s self-designed mutantrumpet with sounds created from fractal mathematics and Hudson River environmental data. A native of North Carolina, Neill holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Manhattan School of Music. He studied composition with La Monte Young and was also mentored by composer/performer Jon Hassell in the early 1980’s. Since 2008 he has been a music professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey. BEN NEILL PRESS QUOTES “Ben Neill is using a schizophrenic trumpet to create art music for the people.” Wired Magazine “Ben Neill performs the Mutantrumpet, a super-instrument of his own design that he also uses to control lights and other elements in the show. The music is a dense, continously-shifting tapestry of electronic beats.” Wired Magazine “The avant-garde and EDM come together in music by Ben Neill & his mutantrumpet.” WNYC New Sounds/John Schaefer “A creative composer, genius performer, and inventor of the mutantrumpet.” Time Out NY “Ben Neill...

GIIA will perform “tiny life” and sit down for an interview with artist/producer/songwriter Schyler O’Neal as part of the GRAMMY Museum’s Spotlight Saturday series, which will be available for viewing on the GRAMMY Museum’s website on November 28. “tiny life,” which was heard in ESPN’s college football campaign, proved to be the biggest launch of GIIA’s career, amassing more first-week streams than the debuts of all her previous releases combined. In its premiere of “tiny life,” LADYGUNN noted, “[GIIA] keeps on churning out hip hop hits ready to dominate radio.” Read the interview HERE. View the official video for “tiny life”HERE.A classically trained opera singer, Giia’s voice adds a distinctive touch to her electronic pop crossover sound. She made her recording debut on the MEMBA track “Heat of the Moment,” featuring alongside Hoosh. The song was named Single of the Week by BBC Radio 1. Released by ODESZA’S Foreign Family Collective in 2018, GIIA’s breakout single “WESTWORLD” and the accompanying music video propelled herto #1 on Hype Machine. Combined global streams of the song now exceed 20 million. Since the release of “WESTWORLD,” GIIA has been in sessions with Hudson Mohawke, Georgia Ku, Nate Campany, Kyle Shearer, Chris Lyon, RITUAL, OjiVolta, Kate Morgan, CHVRCHES, What So Not, Matias Mora and Larzz. Earmilk observed,“EVAN GIIA is the gutsy, barnstorming pop singer making quite a splash with her unique sonic panache and kinetic live persona.”Every EVAN GIIA song is a pure exchange of energy, powerful enough to lift the darkest mood. Classically trained as an opera singer, the Brooklyn-based artist brings both raw passion and precision to her vocal performance, endlessly heightening the impact of her sculpted approach to electronic pop.“I really want my music to get people out of their own heads,” says GIIA. “It’s a big theme in my live show too: being totally present in the room with me and letting the rest of the world melt away so you can move and dance and forgot about everything else for a while.”Since breaking through with her hypnotic single “Westworld” (a #1 hit on Hype Machine, amassing millions of streams), GIIA has mesmerized audiences at major festivals like Coachella and shared stages with leading artists like ODESZA. With her most recent live experience including her first-ever headline tour and a run of dates with Louis The Child, she’s now set to deliver a series of singles further showcasing her stunning vocals and self-possessed songwriting.Mostly recorded in her home studio with MEMBA—an up-and-coming production duo comprised of Will Curry and Ishaan Chaudhary (GIIA’s fiancée)—GIIA’s latest material includes songs like “Focus,” a soulful yet infectious reminder to turn your attention to the things in life that matter most. After sketching the song on her bathroom floor—her former favorite writing spot—GIIA joined forces with MEMBA to transform “Focus” from stripped-back ballad to sprawling epic. Layered with stacked vocals and lush synth lines, the resulting track ultimately builds a beautiful tension between its ethereal textures and hard-hitting beats.Originally from outside Boston, she began training as an opera singer at the age of 7, eventually participating in a summer program at the prestigious Tanglewood Institute. With intentions of transitioning into the pop world, she later earned a degree in music business at the Berklee College of Music, then moved to New York City and landed a job as a secretary at an audio mastering studio. “I knew right away that it wasn’t what I was meant to be doing, but I ended up staying longer than I thought,” GIIA notes. After linking up with MEMBA, however, she began collaborating with the duo on an inventive hybrid of electronic music and pop, eventually posting her songs on SoundCloud and playing shows around New York. As she refined her sound even further, GIIA quit her job and fully devoted herself to music, soon earning serious buzz with “Westworld.” The track promptly caught the attention of ODESZA’S Foreign Family Collective, who released “Westworld” and invited GIIA to join ODESZA on an arena tour in 2018—an auspicious turn of events that paved the way for her signing to Astralwerks in summer 2019.Making her Astralwerks debut with the September 2019 single “Encore,” GIIA next released “Sidelines”: a track whose video she co-directed herself, as is the case with each of her cinematically shot visuals. Filmed in a Brooklyn boxing ring, “Sidelines” also spotlights the tremendous passion for movement that informs all of GIIA’s work. To that end, she recently launched GIIA MOVE: a project that finds GIIA partnering with CycleBar franchises across the country to lead a cycling experience designed expressly for her fans. With each GIIA MOVE class coinciding with her tour dates, she aims to meld music and fitness in a way that’s both intuitive and undeniably fun. “I want to inspire people to get up and move and be healthy” says GIIA, who previously worked as a spin instructor and regularly posts workout playlists on SoundCloud and YouTube. “This is just the way I live my life, and now I’m asking everyone to come and join me in what I love to do.”With so many eclectic projects now in the works, GIIA is especially thrilled to introduce her newly expanded live show, an elaborately realized event she created with the help of her brother/tour manager. (“This whole thing is a family affair me,” GIIA points out. “My parents and my other brother come to every single show, even in snowstorms—they’re always involved, and they always will be, which was the goal from the very beginning.”) In prepping for her 2020 live dates, she also resumed her vocal training in order to build the strength and stamina needed to tear through her one-hour set without any electronic enhancement.“I don’t ever want my show to be so overly produced that people leave and feel like they have no sense of who I really am,” says GIIA. “A lot of the show’s me up there singing these big melodies and feeling the crowd screaming back at me, but I also built in these moments where the lights turn on and I’m just talking to everyone in a more intimate way. I’m the exact same person on stage and off the stage, and it’s really important for me to always show that.”We want to hear from you! File under “mellifluous.” That's how Los Angeles' Powell Aguirre likes to think of the music he makes as Surf Mesa. It's electronic, but full of organic texture. It's rooted in dance, but sounds best by the light of the full moon. It's sweet, but also thoughtful. In other words, as Surf puts it, “music for good feels.” That phrase certainly sums up his biggest hit to date, “ily (i love you baby)” featuring Emilee, a tropically tinged bop that was born on TikTok, but quickly conquered listening platforms around the world, amassing over820million combined streams to date, topping U.S. and Global Viral Charts, and debuting on Top 40 radio. Early press has included Rolling Stone, Billboard, HITS, Idolator, Soundazed and Fresh Music Freaks. Though he's only 20, Surf has logged an impressive number of hours honing his craft. He grew up in Sammamish, Washington, outside Seattle, where an older brother hooked him up with FL Studio –when Surf was in third grade. The summer after his senior year,Surf broke his leg and was bedridden for months. Unexpectedly, that time stuck at home paid off in the form of an EP, titled bedroom, of course. When the cast came off, he wasted no time moving in with musician friends in Los Angeles. Then one night scrolling TikTok, he came across Batesville, Arkansas' Emilee Flood playing an acoustic cover of Frankie Valli's 1967 hit “Can't Take My Eyes Off You.” Captivated by her honeyed voice, Surf dropped the audio into his DAW and, within hours, had posted his remixon SoundCloud. Soon, label reps were blowing up his phone. He signed with Astralwerks. There's no shortage of collaborations in the works, beginning with Surf's remix of Marshmello and Halsey's “Be Kind” and his new single, “Somewhere” ft. Gus Dapperton. While the electronic landscape evolves at a dizzying speed, Surf knows what he wants from his own music. He calls it “electronic alternative”–a style that balances digital textures with piano, guitar, and even acoustic drums, and focuses on songwriting as much as sick beats. It's catchy. It's chill. It's mellifluous. We chatted with Surf Mesa about his music and future in the music industry and much more. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Hailing from the unlikely location of Mystic, a small seaport town in Connecticut, Audien (born Nathaniel Rathbun, 1992) began producing music as a teenager and gradually took his piano-driven hands-in-the-air progressive trance sound to the top of the Billboard dance charts, selling out major venues and headlining numerous EDM festivals along the way. Rathbun started creating tracks in 2008, initially releasing happy hardcore on Only Vibes Recordings, a digital label he co-founded with producer Naggy. Rathbun switched to trance in 2009, sending a demo to Ferry Corsten, who released "Rise & Shine" on his Aleph Recordings imprint. Numerous singles followed on labels like Songbird, First State Music, Enhanced Progressive, and Perceptive Deep, and leading progressive house DJs such as Tiësto, Above & Beyond, and Armin van Buuren began to take notice of Audien's euphoric sound, leading to an opening slot for van Buuren at the Roseland in New York City in 2011. He released tracks on Anjunabeats and Trice Recordings in 2012, and toured the United States with Hardwell soon after. Releases on Zouk Recordings and Spinnin' Records followed, and in 2014 Rathbun remixed Michael Jackson's "Slave to the Rhythm" and Bastille's "Pompeii," the latter of which was heavily played at many clubs and festivals and was eventually nominated for a Grammy for "Best Remixed Recording, Non Classical." After completing his first headlining tour in 2015, Audien signed to Astralwerks. The label promptly released "Insomnia," which topped Billboard's dance music chart. This was followed by the release of "Something Better," a collaboration with country superstars Lady Antebellum. Three more major singles followed, "Crazy Love" (featuring Deb's Daughter) in 2016, "One More Weekend" (with MAX), and "Hot Water" with 3LAU in 2017. 2018 brought a pair of single for the Anjunabeats label starting with the Cecilia Gault collaboration, "Higher," followed by the Arty-assisted "Never Letting Go." Audien ended the year with the anthemic "Rollercoaster" which featured vocals by Liam O'Donnell. ~ Paul Simpson, RoviFollow Sidewalk Talk EDM:https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkedmhttps://twitter.com/sidewalktalkshw (all updates)Sidewalk POP Music channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC82a...https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkpopSidewalk RAP/HIP HOP (Rhythm) Music channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDme...https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkrhythmCheck out Sidewalk Talk website: http://www.sidewalktalks.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The 101ers were a pub rock band from the 1970s playing mostly in a rockabilly style, notable as being the band that Joe Strummer left to join The Clash. Formed in London in May 1974, the 101ers made their performing debut on 7 September at the Telegraph pub in Brixton, under the name 'El Huaso and the 101 All Stars'. The name would later be shortened to the '101 All Stars' and finally just the '101ers'. The group played at free festivals such as Stonehenge, and established themselves on the London pub rock circuit prior to the advent of punk. The group was named after the squat where they lived together: 101 Walterton Road, Maida Vale, although it was for a time rumoured that they were named for "Room 101", the infamous torture room in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The band's early gigs included several at the Windsor Castle and a residency at the Elgin. They were supported by the Sex Pistols at the Nashville Room on 3 April 1976. Strummer claims that this is when he saw the light and got involved in the punk scene. Joe Strummer commented on this event in the Don Letts documentary Westway to the World on the end of the 101ers by saying "5 seconds into their (the Pistols') first song, I knew we were like yesterday's paper, we were over." By the time their debut single, "Keys to Your Heart", was released, Joe Strummer was in The Clash and the band were no more. Clive Timperley later joined The Passions, Dan Kelleher went to Martian Schoolgirls and The Derelicts. Richard Dudanski went on to work with The Raincoats, Basement 5 and Public Image Ltd. Tymon Dogg worked with Strummer briefly in The Clash, playing fiddle and singing his original song, "Lose This Skin", on Sandinista!, and later in The Mescaleros. "I know the 101ers were good. In fact, as far as sound and excitement went we were much better than Eddie and the Hot Rods. The other guys in the group were twenty-five and twenty-six and they played good because they'd spent a few years getting that far. But they were just too old. What I really wanted was to get in with some young yobbo's who I was more in tune with." — Joe Strummer The 101ers' recorded output was initially limited to one single. However, by 1981, interest in The Clash was at its height and a second single and a compilation album Elgin Avenue Breakdown was released. Several of the tracks on the latter album were live recordings, and there is no evidence that the band ever conceived of these recordings as a full-length album. Until his death in 2002, Joe Strummer had been planning to re-release Elgin Avenue Breakdown, complete with previously unreleased tracks that would encompass everything the band ever recorded.[citation needed] The project was completed with the help of Strummer's widow Lucinda Tait and former drummer Richard Dudanski, and released in May 2005 as Elgin Avenue Breakdown Revisited via Astralwerks in the US and EMI in Europe. The last track on the 2005 re-issue was an 8-minute version of "Gloria" recorded on 22 May 1976 at the Cellar Club in Bracknell. This was recorded two weeks before the 101ers finally split. Joe Strummer joined The Clash who played their first gig at the Black Swan, Sheffield supporting the Sex Pistols on 4 July 1976.
Halsey’s Powerful Speech At NYC Women’s March: “I don't really know how to do a speech unless it rhymes, so I'm going to do a little poem for you guys,” https://youtu.be/NjRnyFBexq0 Ashley Nicolette Frangipane born September 29, 1994), known professionally as Halsey, is an American singer, actress and songwriter. Her stage name is a reference to the Halsey Street station of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn, and an anagram of her first name. Gaining attention from self-released music on social media platforms, Halsey was signed by Astralwerks in 2014. She toured with acts such as The Kooks and Imagine Dragons to promote her debut extended play, Room 93 (2014). Her debut studio album, Badlands (2015), was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Four singles were released from the album, all of which achieved minor commercial success. At seventeen years old, Halsey was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, following a suicide attempt that led to a seventeen-day stint in a psychiatric hospital.[15][76] Halsey participated in the mental health and suicide prevention awareness campaign called "I'm Listening", which was hosted by radio network Entercom and broadcast live on September 10, 2017.[6] On January 20, 2018, in New York City, Halsey delivered a speech to more than 200,000 protestors at the Women's March. Instead of a traditional speech, Halsey performed a five-minute poem titled "A Story Like Mine", in which she told personal stories of sexual assault and violence throughout her life. Her personal narrative included accompanying her best friend to Planned Parenthood after she had been raped, her personal account of sexual assault by neighbors and boyfriends, and women sexually assaulted by Olympic doctor Larry Nassar. Halsey stated, "Listen, and then yell at the top of your lungs, be a voice for all those who have prisoner tongues." Halsey read, "What do you mean this happened to me? You can't put your hands on me. You don't know what my body has been through. I'm supposed to be safe now. I've earned it." She completed her speech by requesting all—"Black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian"—sexual assault victims to listen and support each other. AJ Willingham of CNN.com opined in a headline that "Halsey's Women's March speech moved people around the world. Tranquility Bass was the stage name of Michael Adam Kandel,(1967/1968 – May 17, 2015) an American musician whose music has been variously categorized as ambient house, trip hop, and funk rock. He released various singles during the 1990s, followed by his first full-length album, Let The Freak Flag Fly, in 1997 on Astralwerks. Kandel was born and raised in Chicago. He learned to play guitar and keyboards at age 12. By the age of 15 he had begun to record experimental electronic music in his bedroom. Kandel attended the Chicago Academy for the Arts, after which he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to attend CalArts. It was there that he met Tom Chasteen, with whom he started the Exist Dance label in 1991 The two released several singles, including some as Tranquility Bass, later that year. In 1993, Kandel released the single "They Came in Peace", which has been described as an ambient-house classic and appeared on the Mo' Wax compilation album Headz the following year.[4] After the duo released this and a few other singles, including two songs that appeared on the FFRR compilation album, California Dreaming in 1994, Chasteen left Tranquility Bass and relocated to Tucson.[6] Tranquility Bass's touring bassist, Matt Lux, is also the bassist for Chicago-based band Isotope 217. In 1994, after Chasteen's departure, Kandel joined Tyler Vlaovich to record an album on Lopez Island in Washington.[8] More than two years later, the album was released as Let the Freak Flag Fly on Astralwerks Records. Kandel sometimes ceased talking to people, or from using his voice, for two or three days on end during the recording process.[8] According to Billboard, the album led to Kandel developing "a cult following that spans several genres beyond the dance realm." The Los Angeles Times gave the album a rating of three stars (out of four) and described it as "the electronic progeny of acid rock." IIt was also reviewed favorably by Greg Kot, who described it as "a grand journey through nearly a century of recorded music, a densely layered montage of electronic manipulations and live instruments made under conditions that were certainly unusual."[11] The album contained the song "We All Want To Be Free", made more popular by its airplay on MTV's Amp. Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs[edit] After a long hiatus from studio recording and rumors of drug abuse, Kandel returned in 2012 with a sophomore effort entitled Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs. The album was completed on March 21, 2002. Kandel reportedly tried to have the album released on multiple labels, only to have each of them fold after he sent it to them. The album ended up being released on Exist Dance, although it is readily available in digital format on Amazon MP3 and iTunes. The album is mostly new material with the exception of yet another remix of an early days single, "Mike's House". Kandel seemed to try to get away from the idea of being an electronic musician (although some of the album still has electronics), with a dose of various types of rock such as funk rock and surf rock.
