POPULARITY
The United States of America is one of the only countries in the world that uses a system like the Electoral College to choose its fearless leader. So, how do democracies in other countries elect their leader? Nearly 70 percent of them leave it up to voters to choose (a.k.a. the national popular vote). But regardless of what other countries do, it's the system we use to count our votes in America right now. If we want to change aspects of it or get rid of it altogether—like most things it life—it's easier said than done. But, it is possible, and the only way to do it is by understanding how it works.Since we already covered the basics of the Electoral College, we spent S1E5 answering some of our listeners' questions about how it works.Tune in to find out: Why most states use a Winner-Take-All System to count electoral votesThe difference between a Winner-Take-All System and the Congressional District MethodWhy the Congressional District Method isn't a better alternative to a Winner-Take-All SystemAn alternative to the ways we count votes now—National Popular Vote Interstate CompactWhy some states have more sway than othersWhat the heck a swing state isWhy swing states are so important to every presidential election Follow us on Instagram @americandreamoncaffeineHave questions about our government or its systems, laws, or policies? Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 1 Episode 5 – Cupid’s Errant Arrow We’re back with the fifth episode of Lower Decks, titled Cupid’s Errant Arrow. This episode was written by Ben Joseph and directed by Kim Arndt. In this one, the crew of the USS Cerritos teams up with the USS Vancouver to manage controlled demolition of an unstable moon of Mixtus III, but the natives are restless and can’t agree on the getting it done. Bradward’s got a girlfriend! This episode, we get to see more of the Mariner/Boimler dynamic. Boimler’s got a hot girlfriend on the Vancouver, Lieutenant Barbara Brinson, and Mariner thinks something is wrong with her like she’s a shapeshifter, spy, or parasite. Mariner turns herself into a conspiracy theorist and it’s pretty funny, although maybe there were a little TOO many references to past shows, making this one my least favorite episode so far Boimler is definitely a dork. Tendi & Rutherford competing to keep a T88, whatever that is, was probably my least favorite part of this episode. I guess the Lieutenant Commander’s antics I didn’t particularly like. The mission was something straight out of a Star Trek episode, with the exception of the USS Vancouver. The Enterprise never seemed to need any help. This captain coveting the other’s deeds is a little surprising on this show. I’m not sure I like it, but it’s probably more realistic. Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 1 Episode 4 – Moist Vessel We’re back with the fourth episode of Lower Decks, titled Moist Vessel. This episode was written by Ann Kim and directed by Barry J. Kelly. A generational ship, ascending, and a dysfunctional family/command dynamic… This episode, we finally got a little bit of the dynamic between Mariner and Freeman and how they rub each other the other way. In the end, they did end up working well together in a serious crisis. They saved the ship and the crew of the Merced. I was wanting to see that family dynamic, although we still don’t know how Mariner got that way. I still say she was pushed into command before she was ready, at too young of an age. However, Mariner’s behavior is really hard to stomach. Again, this is probably exaggerated for an animated show, but why would they keep her in Starfleet if she acted that way? Tendi gets involved in O’Connor’s ascension, and he ACTUALLY ascends, which made little to no sense to me. HOW did that happen? WHY did that happen? Am I overanalyzing? Maybe. While I was editing this episode, I wondered if I was taking it too seriously, and holding this show up to a live-action standard. Again, maybe. It did bug the heck out of me, though, enough to take off two points from my rating. Tendi was a little annoying, too. By the way, the t-shirt I mentioned that had the koalas and galaxies can be found here. The terraforming ship was cool. What it did to the USS Merced and Cerritos wasn’t. It seemed like a LOT of damage to just be able to reverse. That took me out of the episode. A Tellarite captain was cool to see, although the name of Durango was confusing unless he had some human DNA. I don’t really know but it would have been nice to explain. We often get trapped in this idea that the only way to make a difference is to help as many people as possible. But what if you could help one person so deeply that they in turn were able to fully live and be the person they were meant to be? And what if the one person you could help was yourself? Influence comes in different forms and breadth is not the only way to change the world. Sharing your story is personal. And the how and when of sharing your story is up to each of us. And it’s up to each of us to notice when we are curating our story for the audience, at expense to ourselves. And it’s up to each of us to trust that we know best who gets to hear the raw honest truth of our story or the pieces that feel right for us to share. There is no right or wrong way, but we each have to be accountable to our stories and be responsible for owning how + when we share them + with whom. Are you living for today or planning for tomorrow? Are you sacrificing your current quality of life for a future state quality of life that may never unfold? Where are you putting your resources? This is a big question with no right answer. What if it’s both? Each of us gets to decide what our balance of living in today and preparing for tomorrow is and we have no idea how much time we get so it’s a gamble either way. At least give yourself the space to ask the question and listen to what your heart and soul answers today so that you can be true to you, whatever that truth may be. Welcome to our Rebinge of Star Trek DS9: Q-Less Episode six of season 1 of DS9, entitled Q-Less, brings in some classic TNG characters. Q and Vash visit the station and pretty much everything goes badly. Quark and Vash form a skeezy team to auction off some Gamma Quadrant artifacts to the dumbest rich people Quark knows. Meanwhile the station is getting slowly sucked to its doom into the nearby wormhole. Is Q to blame? Q-Less Vash arrives at DS9 with a very large sack of precious artifacts from the other side of the wormhole. The team is less interested in her baubles than in how she even got over there, but she’s not talking. Bashir and Quark are up to their usual tricks with the new visitor. Sisko is less concerned about Vash than he is about the sudden appearance of Q. What does he want? Is he responsible for the weird power drains happening around the station? Odo is pretty sure everyone is up to something (they are) and Q and Sisko have an epic boxing match. This is a weird episode (well Q is involved, so that’s expected). What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. And kick off the whole thing with our rebinge of the pilot episode Emissary. Or catch up on the previous episode of S1E5: Captive Pursuit. Next time… We dig into Season 1 Episode 7 of DS9: Dax. Be sure and join our Facebook group and Follow Rebinge It on Twitter!
Welcome to our Rebinge of Star Trek DS9: Captive Pursuit In the fifth episode on our Rebinge DS9 journey we explore the episode entitled Captive Pursuit! A new species appears from the Gamma Quadrant and he’s a little green — in more ways than one! Sisko sends a friendly, but inquisitive, Miles out to greet the skittish visitor and help repair his ship. Miles makes fast friends with the green dude, but he’s definitely hiding something. Like who has been shooting at his ship? And what’s this amazing adventure that he’s on but won’t talk about?? And most importantly, what’s with the Pee Wee Herman dance? This guy is up to no good in Captive Pursuit. Captive Pursuit Sisko and team are suspicious about their new friend and it doesn’t help matters when Odo catches him trying to break into a weapons locker. And things get really interesting when these scary cyber men appear. They have incredible firepower and the ability to easily get through DS9 sheilds! Uh oh! What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. This is Part I of a two-part lecture on Inductive Arguments. For Part II, continue on to S1E5. The funny thing about inductive arguments is that they often don’t establish their conclusions with 100% certainty; while they have some degree of truth regarding the veracity of the conclusion, they always inherently have the possibility of having their conclusion invalidated. This is often the case because the premises they rely upon to support their conclusions are chock-full of observational or circumstantial evidence, which is never fully reliable. The lack of 100% certainty is the basis for the variety of question types you will see on the Logical Reasoning section of the LSAT. You’ll have to find conclusions, identify the roles of the premises and conclusions in the argument, and mind that lack of certainty when you need to strengthen its Achilles’ heel or exploit it to weaken it. Or, maybe you can spot the open wound of the argument and just note its flaw, without having to pour salt on it and weaken it as well. How is there an episode #0? Well, this episode includes recordings we did on the first day the mic recorder was brought to school, but there's mostly random stuff. Not to mention, it's 2 hours long unedited (which also means we can't post it to SoundCloud for free). Shontavia and Tonya are on the road (AGAIN) and burning the midnight oil. Both are sleepy! In fact, Tonya almost missed the recording after “resting her eyes for a spell” like her Nana just before the recording light went green! But of course they still managed to deliver all the fire for this episode, as always. Shontavia talks about the most recent stop on her five-city national tour. Tonya’s attending the National Lesbians Who Tech Leadership Summit in the Big Apple. In What’s Got You Lit™, Shontavia talks about a fourth grader bullied over a homemade University of Tennessee Volunteers t-shirt that he wore during his school’s spirit day. She reminds listeners to have a strong IP strategy in place, especially when you find yourself “going viral”. Both hosts discuss how and where to begin. Shontavia also updates a S1E5 topic, 'The' Ohio State University trademark, to cover the current office action status of this trademark battle. Tonya returns to her crypto roots and shares that France says it will block Facebook’s Libra in Europe. Then she talks about a former Uber self-driving car executive charged with criminal theft of trade secrets from Google and breaks down trade secret basics and connects trade secret to an overall intellectual property strategy. In Make Your Fire Work™, Shontavia tells you to “stay ready so you don’t have to get ready” and Tonya encourages you to “find your tribe.” Trouble seeing the full-length show notes? Longtime listeners may remember S1E5 in which Tom talked about playing a "Happy Days" game as a kid in which everyone always wanted to be the Fonze and never Potsie, but from now on, that's just who he's going to be in the new POTS syndrome-focused new segment, "The POTSie." Star Trek: Discovery – S1E5 – Choose Your Pain Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 5, titled Choose Your Pain. Our characters deal with the pain they are causing the tardigrade. Lorca has been taken and then tortured by the Klingons; and we come across the final main cast member, Lieutenant Ash Tyler, and meet an old character in Harry Mudd. Choose Your Pain, Harcourt Fenton Mudd!!! We also see the Klingon L’Rell again, who has moved up and is Captain of her own ship. The reveal of her having Tyler as a prisoner for seven months bring me more questions about Tyler, and makes me wonder about Voq. Could they be one and the same? It wouldn’t be the first time we see a Klingon be altered to appear human. We see this in The Trouble With Tribbles. Now, I am not sure enough about this possibility to declare him a spy, but I will be paying attention to this character going forward. We also enjoyed the Saru scenes, especially with him dealing with his resentment of Burnham and the continuation of the tardigrade story. We both thought this was the best episode so far, and can’t wait for next week! Send in your feedback! OUR FAIR CITY – S1E5 THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN HARTFORD (SCI-FI / DARK COMEDY) LANGUAGE Our Fair City is a post-apocalyptic science fiction / dark comedy audio drama set in the not so distant future where the skies are stormy, and the landscape is a vast frozen tundra. The “Sharp Chuter”, Neal Henderson takes us to the seedy bordellos of Our Fair City, where he has a somewhat unsatisfying encounter with a very special Lady of the Night. Hartlife Studios
