Intro: We have been through some very bad storms. It will be a long time before we forget the impact of superstorm Sandy. The loss of life, property, electricity, was devastating for many. More recently, we have all been affected by the Covid-19 virus pandemic. Some of us have lost relatives and friends. Many businesses and churches were shut down, and some may never open again. We were told to not to leave our homes until absolutely necessary. And now, just as it seemed to be under control because of the vaccine, there has been a resurgence of a variant Covid-19 virus. Because of the pandemic, new stresses were put on people and families. These stresses included financial, physical, and emotional stresses. So, the question I want to raise this morning is; Where is Jesus in the storm? The Cast of People v. 1-2 Luke, Paul, and some other prisoners started their journey to Rome Julius, the centurion, was in charge of the prisoners Aristarchus, a voluntary prisoner and assistant to Paul was with them The Start of the Journey v. 3-8 They boarded a ship at Adramyttium to sail to ports along the coast of the province of Asia Sidon, a stop where friends ministered to Paul allowed by Julius They set out again and the journey started to get rough The Warning v. 9-12 It took a lot of time to travel minimal distances because of the winds and weather in the fall Paul gave them a warning We don't know if Paul gave them a warning from his experience as a traveler 2 Cor. 11:25 This was a warning to be taken seriously Great loss to the ship, cargo, and their own lives The centurion decided to do things his way and followed the advise of the pilot and the ship's owner Note: There are consequences when we don't listen to godly counsel The Storm v. 13-20 There was an usual south wind, so they started to sail again thinking they could make good traveling time before the bad weather came It wasn't too long after they set sail that they ran into a nor'easter storm of hurricane force winds The ship got caught in the storm and could not head into the wind and the ship was tossed about Even the life boat which was towed behind the ship was in peril The crew tried to save the ship with ropes because of the possibility of running aground on a sandbar The boat took a beating and the next day, the crew began to jettison cargo One the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard The storm went on for many days and they finally gave up all hope of being saved The Encouragement v. 21-26 After they all had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said to them that they should have taken his advice Then he urges them to keep up their courage, because bot one of them will be lost, only the ship will be destroyed This was a Word from the Lord An angel of the God stood beside Paul and said, "Don not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you." So Paul admonished them to keep up their courage because Paul has faith in God that He always keeps his promises So, Paul told the crew to be prepared when they run aground on some island Closing: Storms of life: Death of a loved one Divorce A diagnosis of a terminal disease A diagnosis of a chronic disease A loss of a job A serious auto accident Losing a house in a super storm or fire Others What storms of life are you experiencing right now? If you are Christ follower, I want to suggest to you that Jesus is right there with you in the storm to give you assurance and strength and encouragement. If you are not a Christ follower, then the question is; Where do you go for encouragement and strength to meet the challenge of the storm?
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference their journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga. Welcome back to Part 2 of the podcast interview with my guest, Jane Duncan Rogers, founder and Chief Officer of Before I Go Solutions and Before I Go Academy who joined us from North Scotland. I've invited Jane to talk with us about the absolutely vital end-of-life planning work that she and her team are spreading around the world. We were talking about creating Before I Go Solutions as a non-profit when I asked Jane about the challenges and frustrations she faced. Let's hear what she has to say about this and so much more on the topic of end-of-life planning, how it benefits you and your loved ones, and what you can do about it.Minutes: 37:3800 to 2:03 Intro2:03 to 4:20 Challenges and Frustrations I'm curious. You said you knew you were on the right path because of the Yes!, the resounding “Yes!” as you were checking in - but what might have been some of the frustrations and challenges as you were putting all this together?Challenge #1: Putting it together on a shoestringSpent all savings on book publication, Gifted By GriefYes, felt right in some wayFinancials are still a challenge; however Jane has never let lack of money stop her doing anythingWill always find a wayChallenge #2: After 30 years of working as an independent professional now had a team of directors to confer and decide withHad been used to barging ahead with her own ideas, with whatever felt rightChallenge #3: taking on coaches, assistants and the like as Before I Go Solutions expands and developsChallenge #4: anxiety; growth spurt; doesn't feel comfortable but that's what growing anything is like 4:20 to 8:00 Why Should We Even Care About End-of-Life Planning? Many folks say I don't care - I'll be dead - do whatever you like! The thing is, end-of-life plans are for those who come afterIs an incredibly selfless actThis End-of-Life planning is not for everybody; but is still useful to go through the processThe caring is about you caring about those you love and how they will manage after you dieIf you can make their way easier (which you can) that's whyIt is not easy; that's why we do it collectively and have facilitators to helpBelieve it or not: It's a creative process; can be fun and enjoyableMore folks are aware and more open to end-of-life planning because of COVIDOver the past year or so of COVID has there been an increased awareness of end-of-life, of mortality? Do you find that because of COVID that there is not only an increased awareness of life and end-of-life but people are more likely to raise the subject of end-of-life and mortality? In Jane's world death is a common topic; people might be having more conversations. As to the world in general maybe more conversations; but unless the conversation is recorded (even a simple as a list) nothing happens and people remember differentlyUnless you translate a conversation into documentation about choices and desires there could be arguments and issues that cause problems among loved onesThis is not just about the funeral but maybe several years down the line: there could be disagreements about this, that or the other: finances, companies, care of children and the likeJane works with those who recognize that End-of-Life planning is a good idea but still haven't gotten around to itJane's attention is with the willing albeit challenged8:00 to 11:35 How Do You Draw In and Work With the Willing?Like filings to a magnet; attract the willing who wish to investJane's book: Before I Go - has simple instructionsWorkbook to complete is a bigger version of original list of questionsJane discovered that folks do not do the work without help so she created coursesFrom that a facilitator training course was designed and developed to have facilitators to helpPeople ask: Why is there a charge for all of this stuff? Especially when it's there for free although not all in 1 placePeople need encouragement and 1 way to do that is put money where mouth isJane is driven to get End-of-Life Plans to be as common as birth plansJust do it!When you do it with others is creative, fun and connectingHost: quilting bee for End-of-Life!In the day when we could meet together there was that flavor to it11:35 to 14:40 How Do You Begin the Conversation in the Family, With Loved Ones? There is a return to face-to-face so we will have the opportunity for a collective; but before we get to that place, how do you start a conversation in the family?Conversation starters require a contextDo not plan to show up at dinner and ask about burial or cremationIn context it becomes natural to ask a question and discuss the topicWhen Prince Phillip died he had an End-of-Life Plan for years: he wanted a custom-made Land Rover to carry his coffin which makes for an ideal conversation starter: I was thinking about Prince Philip and his Land Rover and made me realize I'd like a side-car...what would you like? Ever thought about it?Another would be: if a celebrity dies, or if you went to funeral, or if attend ed online funeral, or learned about photo legacy, or even listening to amazing podcast between Diane and Jane Duncan Rogers who is completely mad...Have courage because you don't know loved ones' responses in advanceNot easy to ask about personals about sex, money and death; but unless we ask the answer is never given14:40 to 19:45 Before I Go Solutions Website & Free 10 Question QuizThe 10 questions are drawn from the original documentPeople don't know what they don't know; that's one of the main problemsWe don't think about the affect on othersWhat to destroy: we don't consider secrets, journals, evidence, etc. that might hurt or be unpleasant to loved ones; decide what to do with those items in advanceThe things you really don't know: who is authorized to speak on behalf of the ill person? It's not what you thinkKnow the laws that govern where you live to understand who can speak for you or a loved oneGetting some done is better than nothingPower of Attorney is keyHealthcare Power of AttorneyAdvance Healthcare DirectiveWhat we have control over while we are living and not leave big decisions to familyExtremis is wrenching 24 minute documentary film on Netflix: what happens with families in hospital when Advance Healthcare Directive is not in placeYou might very well get treated in the medical system unless you say you don't in writing or otherwise verbalized it to maximize what you wantWe put our heads in the sand about death hoping we will conk out in front of the telly; the truth is most folks end up with a long slow decline getting more and more unhealthy19:45 to 24:50 Digital FootprintWe take such care with compassionate End-of-Life decisions with our pets/ animal companions. We do not consider ourselves, our loved ones - nor do we think about the digital footprint. Question: what will happen to it, what can happen to it, what can people do to remove the footprint or let it be?You have to make conscious decision to keep or deleteJane got a friend to deal with Phillip's Facebook page; but doesn't know more than thatDo you want to continue as alive on social media after you're dead, or not?For the young people it could be used as a memorial site that also meant something to friendsWhat do you want, how do want us to carry on, and where is it put down so we know what to do? Then get on with living your life.Host recalls a book about End-of-Life plan (Handbook for Mortals) where it was set out to how to take the opportunity to tie up loose ends; what happens if you do all that and you don't die, was it all in vain? No; you've done all the work, no worry that something is lacking. Go and live your life until you don'tEducating yourself about the myriad of details is helpful for those coming after and helps you prioritize what's important24:50 to 28:08 Highlights About TopicsWhat are other topics to address, chapter headings of what's to be learned.Secrets, Journals, Letters, Diaries. Online course (self-study) plus live opportunities with facilitators trained to hold folks accountable28:08 to 31:00 Joy in End-of-Life Planning and Topic of DeathThere is an over-riding sense of joy in this conversation with Jane which is a combination of true energy, purpose, passion and bringing End of Life Ellie the Elephant to the light. This isn't grim or depressing. This is engaging. Jane loves the word “joy!” in this work, especially because of her experience - even though it didn't start off like thatThere can be joy and fun in death and preparing for it, as her clients say to describe the work they do on the coursesBefore I Go Solutions bring a lightness to the topic - they switch a light on in what's perceived as a dark room31:00 to 37:38 LegacyAs we sit here today what would you like to see happen in the world as a result of your work? Completely fueled by the idea that End-of-Life plans will be so normal - like birth plansHaving a plan is better than notJane's Big Mission: commonplace in the worldNow, what about seeing End-of-Life plans as part of the corporate Employee Benefits package, the Human Resources Department, all part of culture changeJane has always been a pioneer in her past; she sees the horizon wide openAs we begin to close, what might have been left unsaid? The gift in the grief: from horrible to enormous number of spiritual insights she wrote about in her book, which completely changed her, and that it took Phillip's death to do thatWhat folks are interested in: practical side of thingsJane followed her heart to respond to that interestIf Life is calling you, your job is to follow it no matter how mad it might seemTook 10 people saying the same thing before she paid attentionA resounding “Yes!”Before I say thank you to Jane I want to mention that all social media links, and TEDx talk, and connections to Jane Duncan Rogers and her work, Before I Go Solutions will be posted in the Episode Notes. Academy. When my husband Philip died, I never for one moment imagined I would end up working in this field.I had been an award-winning counselor and coach for over 25 years, having originally trained personally with the famous Louise L. Hay in 1990, working in the personal growth field in many different aspects. I'd published books and tapes (well before the internet) and was helping small business owners to reach their full potential when Philip died.Because of the questions he had answered in his last year, I was well prepared in some respects for the admin side of things afterwards. But there was much more we simply did not know about.Fast forward to 2018, a year during which both my parents died. They had completed a comprehensive end-of-life plan each, the one that Before I Go Solutions offers, now known as the Before I Go Method®.This was very different to my husband who had answered some things, but there was a lot more that I simply had to decide about myself. And that difference was huge – as my parents' executor, I simply had to follow all their thoughtful instructions. What's more, it was easy to find everything, and I took great solace from knowing I was carrying out what they wanted (and that they had known I would do this). My three siblings and I had no arguments at all, over what was a pretty stressful period (they both died unexpectedly within the same week).I am so incredibly grateful and appreciative for the organisation they had so carefully thought through. So I know from personal experience how hugely important this preparation work is, and I want to help you to help others do this too!Jane's background of 25 years in the psychotherapeutic and training fields has been perfect for the not-for-profit - Before I Go Solutions - she founded and helps to operate. Together with her team of trained End of Life Facilitators, she provides products and programmes to help people complete their end-of-life plans, something about which many have good intentions but never quite actually get around to doing.Jane lives in the North of Scotland, re-married during COVID lock-down, and she and her new husband are building not only a new life but a new eco-house/home together. In This Episode You’ll Hear About:How growing up in Maine and having strong influences in her life led her to appreciate nature and also know from a young age that she liked to lead othersWhat she learned during her two years teaching high school english with Teach For America and why she took a job in the business world after that with McMaster-Carr where she received invaluable experience in managementWhat got her interested in the food and beverage industry, why she went to business school, and what brought her to intern at General MillsWhat brought Eliza to turning down a job opportunity to finding her mission in creating herbal products that could make a difference in people's livesHow the first year of creating, branding, and selling her initial product taught her what she needed to change and helped her better understand what consumers would want, how to market it, and how to pitch to retailers and investorsWhat challenges she had to face and overcome in the beginning of launching Sunwink and what she and her team learned from themHow fundraising went for her and her Co-Founder, why she recommends having a Co-Founder, and what questions she recommends asking as a FounderWhy she believes rest is so important and how authenticity within her organization has led to a stronger and healthier company culture that can work well togetherWhat’s next for Sunwink and where you can find their products and continue to watch them grow for years to comeTo Find Out More:Sunwink.comQuotes:“The culture of your organization is really important, arguably a lot more than what you're making and selling. The people that make up that team and what it feels like to go to work every day are, I think, a big player in how successful you'll be.”“In a way, you're only as good as the people around you. And...the more you can get out of your own way and really put strong people around you and empower them, the better your team will be for it.”“If I can get the taste better and if I can get the packaging better to grab people's attention to want to try to taste it, there's something about this category that I'm getting feedback on that people are really interested in.”“The word Sunwink, to me, evokes joy and cheerfulness, and that's what I hope people take away from the product, too. So I think there's a feeling you get from the word.”“The things that I've learned in the process and continue to take with me are to really fight against undervaluing yourself.”“If an investor asks you something, and you're not ready to share that kind of information, you can say, "I'm not comfortable sharing that right now." And that's OK.”“The best thing you can do is just piece out the conversations. If someone's really interested, you're going to have multiple conversations. You don't have to share all the details in the first 10 minutes of the call. The details should really start to come out in call two and call three. There's a buildup.”“You have to rest. And it's the hardest thing. I'm constantly in an argument with myself about this, but like you have got to give yourself moments where you step away.”“I think the sooner you can be honest with yourself about what your end goal is with your company, like what are you trying to build? Have that dialog with yourself and keep checking in. Because the sooner you can do that, I think the smarter you will be about making decisions along the way.”“I always tell people, if you're thinking about doing it and you would look back in a couple of years and regret not doing it… You don't have another choice, because if you don't do it, you'll regret it.”
Welcome to Episode 124 of Building My Legacy. In this podcast we talk with Expressive Meditation coach Pragito Dove who works with a wide range of clients, many of whom are entrepreneurs. The meditation techniques Pragito uses are all designed to release physical stress, which in turn releases mental stress and ultimately emotional stress. When leaders do this, they develop a warmer, kinder, more compassionate energy. They also learn to accept themselves, so they can more easily accept others. As a business owner herself, Pragito understands that, to help a business expand, the owner needs to expand, too. You can’t keep the same narrow way of thinking or old beliefs because you have to “roll with what’s happening.” This last year has been a great example of the need to pivot and come up with new creative ideas. The right meditation technique can help you be fully in the present rather than worrying about the past or the future. And, as a result, you can have a more open heart, a more open mind and become much more creative. So if you want to know:What meditation is and what it isn’tHow easy it can be to incorporate meditation into your workdayWays to cope no matter how chaotic things getWhy listening to yourself first is necessary if you want to be able to listen to othersWhat creates stress and how it reduces your productivity About Pragito DovePragito Dove is a global authority on Expressive Meditation and the founder of the number one Expressive Meditation training school in North America. The son of an alcoholic, Bill describes his childhood as "pretty dysfunctional."Around age eight or nine, Bill was introduced to the idea of a personal faith by a neighbor, and that began his life-long journey to live differently and to focus on making an eternal impact in our world.Throughout his lifetime, Bill has had some amazing opportunities to impact the world, including practicing law for 12 years to co-founding iDonate, a leading digital giving software company that helps nonprofits build lasting relationships with their supporters. In 2000, Bill felt a calling to do something more in our sector, leading him to create The Signatry, a global community and ministry dedicated to creating eternal impact through generosity across generations. I'm so excited about this week's podcast because I'm bringing you another male perspective to the conversation around grief. As the mother of sons and grandmother to grandsons, I happen to love and adore men. And from my research, conversations, and experience, men are taught even less about grief, and expressing their feelings in general, than women are. Today, we're going to talk with a bereaved father, Jim Mueller, who channeled his grief into a beautiful book called “Lyrics Of A Broken Heart.”Luke's moments of joyWhy what matters isn't about what you accomplish in the world - and what is importantHow opening ourselves up to love opens us up to lossHow he's extended Luke's Spirit as a way to not get lost in the grief, but rather to use it to give to othersWhat he doubted about his writingThe message Luke's godfather received for Jim after Luke's passing - and Jim's initial reaction to itThe thing we can't force ourselves to doWhat he believes is the most important thing for us to do in griefHow he fell into the abyss of GodWhat happens when we shine a light on the thoughts and emotions of our griefThe question he asks himself when he meets someone who's grievingThe gift we can find in grief - if we choose toWhat he learned from a patient with disabilities when he was a chaplain in a hospitalHis experience with Lawrence Welk's daughter, and her near-death experienceWhat happened when he used mantras and energy healing on Luke in the NICUThe concept of emotional wholeness - and the journey to attain it after griefThe hard choices we often have to make with loved ones who are seriously illWhat he did with Luke's pictures after Luke's passingThe importance of surrender and not pushing against what isWhen his grief began to melt awayWhen he was able to finish the bookWhy his book is very uncomfortable for menBe sure to pick up a copy of Jim's book on Amazon or your local bookstore. And please come over and give my Facebook page, Grief With Grace Podcast, a Like! The United States of America is one of the only countries in the world that uses a system like the Electoral College to choose its fearless leader. So, how do democracies in other countries elect their leader? Nearly 70 percent of them leave it up to voters to choose (a.k.a. the national popular vote). But regardless of what other countries do, it's the system we use to count our votes in America right now. If we want to change aspects of it or get rid of it altogether—like most things it life—it's easier said than done. But, it is possible, and the only way to do it is by understanding how it works.Since we already covered the basics of the Electoral College, we spent S1E5 answering some of our listeners' questions about how it works.Tune in to find out: Why most states use a Winner-Take-All System to count electoral votesThe difference between a Winner-Take-All System and the Congressional District MethodWhy the Congressional District Method isn't a better alternative to a Winner-Take-All SystemAn alternative to the ways we count votes now—National Popular Vote Interstate CompactWhy some states have more sway than othersWhat the heck a swing state isWhy swing states are so important to every presidential election Follow us on Instagram @americandreamoncaffeineHave questions about our government or its systems, laws, or policies? Has the phrase ‘I’m not good enough’ ever crossed your mind? It could be, I’m not good enough for this job, for this partner, to be on the team, or to make the cut. This is a common phrase that occurs in people’s minds, and it reveals a level of self-doubt that we believe about ourselves. This is part two of the Satir Model discussion. In this episode, Linda Lucas will share a little more about the Satir method, specifically how it related to our view of ourselves. We will discuss the difference between self-doubt and self-esteem, and share what it means to live a congruent life. You will learn about how your belief system develops, and how you can learn to have a more positive self-image. Showing kindness and empathy towards ourselves is an essential ingredient for developing self-esteem. I talk to Jeremy Lipkowitz, who is a Search Inside Yourself certified teacher, a leadership coach, a meditation teacher, an emotional intelligence trainer, and founder of Untangling The Mind. I met Jeremy in Chiang Mai, Thailand and found out that throughout his life, although he consistently achieved his academic and career goals, he felt empty inside and ultimately unhappy. This lead to unhealthy addictions, which Jeremy also openly talks about. This episode is a fascinating discussion about purpose, meaning and also some of the quite big career changes Jeremy has had personally in his life. What I love about Jeremy is that he has a solid background in science, spending 4 years on his PhD in Genetics, and throughout his quest for happiness, he’s found some game-changing tools for high-achievers and high performers to find meaning and happiness, with or without having to change the job or career you’re in.In this episode we discuss:From being allergic to spirituality as a scientist to understanding it (as a scientist)Jeremy’s big career changes - from science to trading tea to teaching mindfulness and meditationHow to decide whether to stay in your career or not if you feel unfulfilledPractical tips to start uncovering purpose and meaning in your life to feel less empty insideShifting from a mindset of self interest to one of contribution to othersWhat’s the one thing that makes Jeremy Lipkowitz burn from within? We have enough on our plates. Working hard, caring for family, developing friendships, making ends meet, saving money, exercising, eating healthy, finding a spouse, cultivating our relationship with God, and a whole host of other responsibilities. On top of all that, we are supposed to make disciples? Dave Buehring tackles how we can’t look at disciple making as another item we check off on our “to do” list. And, how it’s different from mentoring and coaching.Defining TermsDisciple – one who loves, obeys and serves JesusDisciple Maker – one who deliberately models and teaches another to love, obey and serve JesusDisciple Making – reproducing the character, ways and mission of Jesus in those around you, expecting them to multiply the same in othersWhat is the difference between disciple making, mentoring and coaching?Mentoring – a relationship that passes on skills, knowledge and experience toanother on any topicCoaching – Guiding people towards discovering answers through well askedquestionsDisciple Making – how to follow Jesus as His disciple in any and all areas of one’slife; always tethered to God’s ways in scripture*It matters who is doing the mentoring, coaching or disciple making. If that person isincorporating Biblical principles into their guidance and counsel.Scripture Reference“And He (Christ) himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds(pastors) and teachers, to equip the saints (his people) for the work of ministry for building upthe body of Christ.” ~ Ephesians 4:11-12 (ESV)Pastors and teachers are supposed to equip us (believers) for the work of ministry. Who better to disciple someone who wants to start a company than someone who has already faced the challenges of being a godly entrepreneur? Who better to disciple a mother of young children than someone who has survived and learned lessons from that season of life? Making disciples means coming alongside people in a relationship built on trust and being able to point them to God’s ways and truth. For more on this subject, pick up a copy of The Great Opportunity: Making Disciples of Jesus in Every Vocation. A personality theory that includes nine different "types," the Enneagram has become a popular tool for self-awareness and improvement. But in this book, Sherrill goes deeper, exploring with Christians how the Enneagram can be a pathway to profound spiritual transformation. Sherrill reveals the Enneagram as a tool to unlock new ways of viewing identity, personality, discipleship, spiritual practices, evangelism, and the Bible.Using this fresh approach, Sherrill shows how our true identity is that of a beloved child of God. Recognizing that, we can move confidently into the world expressing this identity through our unique personality.Through Sherrill's detailed spiritual exploration of each type, readers will emerge viewing the Enneagram as a precious gift to following Jesus more closely. I was out with some friends from church a couple of weeks ago. We had such a good night. I don’t think I’ve laughed so much in a long time. “It’s so good to laugh!” I said to Shona on the way home.Laughter can be goodNatural laughter: laughing with friends, good clean funSpiritual laughter: laughing with God at his goodnessLaughter can be badDirty laughter: rude jokes and filthy talkDoubting laughter: Skeptical dismissing of what someone saysDespising laughter: Sneering, mocking contempt of God or othersWhat about Abraham’s laugh in Genesis 17:17, where God told him not only that he would have a son when he was 100 years old, but that Sara would bear his son when she was ninety! Was Abraham’s laugh a good laugh or a bad laugh?I used to think it was bad because it questioned God. It was the kind of laugh that casts doubt on what God said. But I looked up Matthew Henry and he argued that it was a good laugh. He called it “Abraham’s joyful, thankful, entertainment of this gracious promise...It was a laughter of delight, not of distrust.” The questions were more about admiration and surprise than doubt.John Calvin says it was a mixed laugh. “He laughed, not because he either despised, or regarded as fabulous, or rejected, the promise of God; but, as is commonly wont to happen in things which are least expected, partly exulting with joy, and partly being carried beyond himself in admiration, he breaks forth into laughter....Abraham was as one astonished; as if he had received some incredible tidings.”Whether Calvin or Henry is right, I was wrong. What they say fits better with Romans 4:19-21.He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrennessof Sarah's womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. It’s good laugh with friends, but it’s also good to reverently laugh with God at his astonishing, surprising, wonderful, awesome Gospel promises and grace. As Abraham showed, we can be flat on our faces while filled with holy laughter. He wasn't laughing his head off, but was laughing his heart out (John 8:56).This episode of Living the Bible lines up with Expedition 4: Day 6 in Exploring the Bible Together: A 52 Week Family Worship Plan and Exploring the Bible: A Bible Reading Plan for Kids. Special Guest - Ward Thrasher, MD, MS, MCP Religion has been a topic argued heavily on both sides. While I agree Religion has a place in our world in society, I do not feel it should be thrusted within the workplace. Ward brings a very interesting perspective to Religion in the workplace. Are we solitary and relatively powerless egos in a mechanical world, or do we belong to a community of seen and unseen Others? What does it mean to live the life of the soul, and why is this necessary? “The Fire-bird and the Princess Vasilisa,” a Russian fairytale about a hunter and a horse, a king, a magical bird and a mysterious princess, offers a way into the imaginal realm where such questions can be considered.A transcript of this podcast is available at http://www.mythicmojo.comThanks for listening and keep the mystery in your life alive. Eric Engelmann is the founder of Geonetric Executive Director of the New Bohemian Innovation Collaborative (NewBoCo), and the Iowa Startup Accelerator in Cedar Rapids, IA. He also recently returned from a long-term travel excursion with his wife and two children. In today's show, Eric shares his thoughts about how his trip affected him and his family, how to combine your passion with your work, and how to determine if entrepreneurship is the right choice for you.Today we will discuss:Challenges of adapting to long-term travel with othersWhat were you most surprised about during your travels?Professional observations abroadEntrepreneurship around the globeHow did you change from your experiences? How to ‘find your passion'Who should NOT be an entrepreneurAdvice for entrepreneursWhat drives you?Quotes6:13 As we traveled, the feeling of safety that I had originally feared never came back again. I never felt unsafe anywhere once we had dealt with the fact that we were gone from home.9:53 [At home] you have your routines, you have your places, you have your favorite easy chair, you have the TV show you know that's coming on that you like to watch, and it dominates. But when you're in [another] country... in a good way, it ruins the dynamic that you have at home and makes you interact in different ways that I think are very powerful.22:30 Americans have a tendency to believe that they've automatically got the answer, that they're the best, and that everybody else aspires to be just like the US. It's a national arrogance thing - we grew up with it... and then you go travel and realize that nobody does. There are ways that people do things in other countries that are as good or better than what we do, and they're not pining to be like us at all.27:06 When we came back, I noticed that [my kids] were very proud that they were Americans, but I felt like they were also suddenly, clearly aware of where America was not everything it needed to be and there were places where it could be better. That was one of the reasons we took the kids on this trip at all.32:04 Picture a Venn diagram of what you're passionate about, what you can do to provide for your family, and the lifestyle you want. Some people are going to have them very closely overlapped... others will be less fortunate. But I think there are options to move where there's overlap... and to the extent that you can find it, I absolutely think you should.35:20 The idea that you can get started on something and start down a path and find opportunity along the way is more important than the plan that takes you there... you bump into it, you try something and then keep going.48:08 The most important thing that I tell almost every entrepreneur is the ability to step away from what you think the answer is and let data drive your decision making. This is one of those things that's the equivalent of “eat less and exercise more to be healthy.” Everyone hears it, but nobody knows how to make it a normal thing to do.57:08 Learn how to trust people. As an entrepreneur, it's often a lonely game... you've trained your mind to think that inertia and movement are because of you when it's really not. In the beginning, it's about backing an individual. But when it gets any movement at all, it's about backing a company - and a company means that there's many people trying to accomplish the same goal.1:02:50 Leave with a question. Go on a trip with a question that you'd like to come back with the answer to. You'll wrestle with it while you're awake and asleep thinking about how to do it.

What does it mean to live an unfiltered life? Today I'll uncover the reason why you’re afraid that you’re going to be judged for doing so. I'll also show you that living unfiltered really means living authentically. Are you ready for permission to take the filters OFF YOUR LIFE? Today’s SACRED S.O.L. STORY comes from earlier in the week with my LIVE S.O.L. DATE SISTERHOOD. Each week I, along with a group of women from around the world (with our most recent S.O.L. DATE SISTER joining us from Australia,) come together to Sip On Life and Date Ourselves Well LIVE via Zoom Video Conferencing. We openly share our hearts. We show up, speak up, step up, and stand up for what we believe, and step into the life we desire. Sipping On Life has been a several year journey for me, and it continues. Thank God. As long as I’m alive, I’m going to sip on life. And I’d love to do it with you as well. I’m so grateful that you’re here. Each week we have a S.O.L. DATE. We get together and talk. Although it’s not simply talking. We share what’s going on. We open up our hearts. And we sort of dissect it. We appreciate it, and ask questions. That’s the BIG thing...the ASKING of questions. So let’s go back a bit, because the past few days we’ve been talking about the heart. But really it’s been a HEART issue since the very beginning. Specifically EPISODE 024: The 3 Keys To Access Your Heart and yesterday’s EPISODE 025: Living With Your Heart Wide Open. We’ve been talking about the heart. The big thing that’s often missing, in a so-called SECRET STRATEGY into the heart, is ASKING QUESTIONS. The other day I was asked how I’m able to access someone’s heart from the outside so quickly. I responded, "If I can get someone to open her/his mouth, I’m in their heart." Why? Because I know what their heart’s saying as they start speaking. The greatest way to do that is by asking a question. That right there - if you get nothing else from today’s broadcast - is GI-NORMOUS. (Yep, that's a made-up word.) What questions are YOU asking in your life? What questions are you asking of yourself? Others? What questions are you asking your heart? I asked one of my S.O.L. DATE SISTERS, “What would your life look like if you were living it UNFILTERED?” As she was speaking, I picked up on the fact that she’s been holding back a lot. I find this across the board with the women I coach, as well as the men. However, it seems more prevalent in women. I see them NOT speaking up. That’s why I’ve created an environment in my SISTERHOOD for women to speak up. To literally open her mouth and heart, and let it come out. Spew it out…seriously, I call it, “Naked. Unafraid. Unashamed. Unapologetically letting it all out." My S.O.L. DATE SISTER was putting a filter on herself for many reasons. (You know who I’m talking about, dear soul. I know you're listening.) But it’s not only her. It’s women across the board. What would your life look like if you were living unfiltered? Her immediate response was, “That would be irresponsible, right?” Although the look on her face was like…Ahhh…that would be awesome. Perhaps like some of you may have felt yesterday when I spoke about living life with your heart wide open. Ah... Living UNFILTERED is living WIDE OPEN. Without the lens being filtered. We live in a world today that's filtered. Social media. Everywhere. Everything has a filter. We think we have to say "it" a certain way, we have to get the perfect camera angle, or perfect lighting. We have to express ourselves in such a way as to create a certain response from those on the other end. Somehow we want “them” to think this...or we don’t want them to think “that.” It gets very complicated. I like to call it, “COMPLEXICATED.” Complex and complicated. (Yep, another made-up word.) Simply put it’s not a whole lot of fun! Even though my S.O.L. DATE SISTER looked relieved, she responded, “But that would be irresponsible." When I ask YOU the question: What would your life look like UNFILTERED? What comes to mind for you? In her case, she felt it would be irresponsible. So I asked her if the most AUTHENTIC version of her would be “irresponsible?” She responded quickly with a, “No.” I agreed, because I know her, and she’s VERY responsible. However YOU answer this question, take a look at your answer. And ask yourself, “When I’m being my MOST AUTHENTIC, am I being "THAT?" Then I asked, “Why, if you were living your life UNFILTERED, would it be an irresponsible life? She was a little surprised, because she admitted that she’d never thought of it this way before. What we uncovered was this (I think this will really help you if you let it set in): Is it possible that there are parts of you that you’ve denied and set aside, or labeled as irresponsible, unloveable, or (fill in the blank?) And now it sits in the dark, and you’re hiding it. Maybe you even feel a little ashamed of it. Like you don’t dare expose “that” because of how you’ve labeled it. She had been doing this with a side of herself. Leaving her with the unconscious belief that she had to FILTER it. Is it possible that living unfiltered really means living authentically? I’ll give you another example. When you hear this phrase: Oh my goodness, they were so “wild.” Instantly people think about the idea of “wild” being irresponsible, unethical, crazy sexually, or all these different judgements. But what if “wild” meant YOU being in your NATURAL STATE? No different than a tiger that acts like a tiger in its natural, wild state because it’s a tiger. A lion is a lion because its a lion. What if your being wild and free was you simply being real? What if it was being authentic to who you are, and you didn’t have to be afraid of it? Why? Because YOU in your authentic or UNFILTERED state is actually very responsible, ethical, lovable, etc...(fill in the blank?) We create all these stories that tell us that we have to edit, hide, filter, or do all these other things. When the truth is we don't. What if you could live in an UNFILTERED state, and that unfiltered state was someone who was absolutely authentic, genuine, real, and valuable? My dear, YOU in your INAUTHENTIC state, are not showing your value. Do you get that? Is it possible that you’ve been living, and believing, a story that says YOU in your AUTHENTIC state is NOT valuable? Or that you as your genuine self would be irresponsible? Or wild and crazy…and NOT in a good way? I’d encourage you to think about this today. I’m extremely passionate about what I'm sharing with you here. In our S.O.L. DATE we began to uncover some of these truths. That was a few days ago. Since then she’s seeing that things are changing for her, and she’s even healing physically. What if YOU living in your UNFILTERED state is what’s required for YOU to live freely? Healthfully? What would that look like for you? We’ll continue this conversation in tomorrow’s broadcast… For now, please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage with yourself). TODAY’S SACRED S.O.L. STEP: Answer this question: What would your life look like if you were living UNFILTERED? How would it look? How would if feel? Write it down. I believe this has the power to set you free. It's why so many women from all over the world are NOT speaking up. Because if you open up your mouth, you’re going to show yourself, right? What if you feel that what you’re showing is "this", "that", or "the other?" And you think you’re going to be judged because of it? The reason why you’re afraid you’re going to be judged is because YOU’VE been judging yourself. Is that possible? I see it all the time. I’d love to hear from you. What came up for you? What’s going on in your mind and heart as you begin to commit to living an UNFILTERED life. A life with flow and ease. Sipping On Life. Yes, I’d love to hear from you. Please come on over to WomenSippingOnLife.com. Seriously. I’ll look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Thank you. I appreciate you. xo Dr. Shannon. Inspiring minds that want to grow and hearts that want to know, so you can love you, your life, and your life’s work well. ONE SIP AT A TIME.
