Your Biggest Challenge – PTC 529

What is your biggest challenge right now? Many podcasters recently shared their answers with me. Today, I'll help you overcome your biggest challenge. OVERCOMING YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE I've often heard many podcasts fade away after 7 episodes. The industry has termed it podfading. I thought the number was a bit crazy. Then one day, I realized how true it is. A client was trying to grow her podcast. Her biggest challenge was attracting new listeners. We decided the strategy that would fit best was appearing on other podcasts. Let's get in front of her ideal clients. We opened Apple Podcasts and started searching for podcasts that matched her caregiving niche. As we combed through the podcasts, nearly every other one had only released a few episodes and the last was months or years ago. They had faded away. Podfading is real. THOSE THAT HAVE FADED I did the same exercise with another client. We opened Apple Podcasts and searched "Get Untuck". Here is what we found. Even many of the top recommended podcasts have faded away, though with more episodes. These are listed in order that Apple Podcasts recommended them. Get Unstuck with Murielle Marie. 23 episodes last published 7/24/23. Get Unstuck Today by Paul Salter. 47 episodes last published 7/14/24. How To Get Unstuck with Helen Thomas. 19 episodes last published 5/28/24. Get Unstuck & On Target by Mike O'Neill. 203 episodes last published 2 days ago. Get Unstuck. Move Forward With Your Life by Jason Hopcus. 12 episodes last published 4 days ago. Get Unstuck by Becky Branton-Griemann. 48 episodes last published 4/20/22. Get Unstuck by Mutita Panmook. 245 episodes last published 1 day ago. Get Unstuck: Elite Voices Making An Impact by Maiken Kuhl. 31 episodes last published 12/13/24. Get Unstuck with Michele Lefler. 53 episodes last published 10/17/23. You get the idea that most of them fade away. But you're saying, "Erik, these all have 40 or 50 episodes." The next recommended podcast is Get Unstuck & Go by Rodrigo Labra. 4 episodes published last published 2/14/23. Then there is Unstuck With Me by Barbara Jebet. One episode published 5/7/20. Get Unstuck & Find Clarity by Lysia Nathanya. 2 episodes last published 10/10/19. Get Yourself Unstuck by Andrew Eaton – 3 episodes last published 3/27/20. And it goes on and on. YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IS USUALLY ONE OF THESE THREE Most podcasts fade away due to three big challenges. First, the podcast becomes more work than they thought it would be. To overcome this challenge, you need a process in place to consistently produce your show. Next, podcasts fade away because it doesn't grow as fast as they thought it would. You need a system in place to methodically grow your audience. Finally, podcasts fade away because it doesn't generate money as fast as they thought it would. Most lack a strategy to generate revenue with their show. I imagine your biggest challenge has something to do with one of these three. Let's look at the biggest challenge from each of these listeners and see how we can overcome your hurdles.   APPEARANCES INTO CASH The most significant challenge I face with podcasts is turning my appearances into cash. While I deeply value the opportunity to share my story and connect with new audiences, I want to better leverage these appearances to generate tangible income, whether through promoting my books, courses, or speaking engagements. Balancing that monetization goal while maintaining authenticity and value for the audience is a priority for me. -Sheldon Thanks for the question, Sheldon. You can maintain your authenticity and value by serving first. Brendon Burchard once said one of the reasons you're not making money is that you don't seek to help first. If you are using your podcast appearance to help listeners first, it is your obligation to offer to help them go even further by working with you. You can only teach so much in an interview. Help them clearly see what is possible. You can even point them in the right direction. Then, offer to help them implement it. Begin by creating a strategy for your interviews. Start with the end in mind. Where do you want to take them? When I'm interviewed, my goal is to get people to a sales video that will sell my program to help people launch their podcast. The video shows people how to walk through the 21 steps to launch. Then, the video offers the course to implement the checklist. During the interview, I help people see how easy it is to launch the podcast. We talk about the benefits of having a podcast. I help listeners envision having their own podcast and growing their significance in their niche. The interview is about inspiration and clarity. At the end of the interview, I invite people to get my podcast launch minicourse at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/launch. They opt in and get on my list. Then they get access to the 21-point checklist and a video that walks them through it. After going through the 5-minute video, they are invited to a call with me to answer their questions. Finally, I ask if they would like help implementing the plan. It's all about having a strategy and begin by serving people first.   SHOULD I START My biggest challenge is to decide whether to start a podcast or just groom and promote myself as a guest on existing podcasts. I am leaning toward the latter as I am uniquely prepared to bring help, hope and healing to a huge, constantly-growing, group of pain-filled people. On the other hand, I am tech averse and doubt I have inclination, time, skill, or energy to take on development of an adequate self-conducted podcast. -Dale These are two separate strategies. Appear on other podcasts to get discovered and attract new followers. Have your own podcast to build relationships with your followers. When you have your own podcast, you get to have a conversation with your listeners every week. You get to share your story and let them get to love you. Creating a podcast isn't that difficult. Editing audio is like editing a Word document. Copy, cut, paste, delete. All the same commands. Saving it as an .mp3 is like exporting that Word document as a .pdf. If you can upload a photo to Facebook, you can upload audio to your host. After your podcast is set up, that's about all it takes each week. To get help walking through the process, join my for the free podcast launch workshop. Get the details at http://www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/launchworkshop.   FINDING NEW AUDIENCES My biggest challenge is reaching new audiences. -Jeanette I have found the best way to grow my audience is partnering with others. Find people who are speaking to your ideal clients. Then, partner with them to reach more of your ideal clients. I recently had a former client reach out. She saw me speak on a group call about the power of getting interviewed on other shows. She called to say she is ready to relaunch her podcast. On top of that, she is partnering with another expert to launch a joint venture and would like my help. This is the power of partnering with others. You never know who is in the audience.   MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS MY AGE I am 73, so not a spring chicken by any stretch of the imagination, but dumb as a post when it comes to technology. I would very much like to have my own podcast for my business that I am trying to get off the ground, but tech stuff bites me every time. I already have people interested in what I do, and I have had offers to be an affiliate, but I don't know how to set that up on my WordPress site. -Marilyn Start slowly, Marilyn. If you already have others interested in what you offer, sell it before you build it. If you can get 10 or 12 people to invest in a $500 course you teach live over 6 weeks, you can make a quick $5,000. This is what I did. I found multiple people who wanted to grow their audience. During conversations with each of them, I offered to teach them how in a 6-week course. They each paid me $500 before it even started. I recorded the entire program. That became my course. The $5,000 funded my other projects to find more clients. As I mentioned with Dale, the tech isn't that difficult. Plus, you can also find people to help you produce the show once you begin generating revenue with the course you just built. You don't need to build a big affiliate program on your Wordpress site until you have something that sells. Just get started.   GETTING GUESTS My biggest challenge right now is getting consistent guests in my niche. -Greg Getting guests typically isn't very difficult. The biggest challenge is asking often. Not every invite will accept your invitation. Just keep asking. When you land a guest, ask them for referrals. If they have guest ideas for you, ask them to send an introductory email. The best chance of getting a guest is finding someone who has something to promote. That could be a book, program, organization or a variety of other things. Reach out to potential guests on a regular basis. Put it on your calendar and do it often. You'll find success.   PARTNERS My biggest trouble is connecting with other podcasters to grow my podcast. As you know, many podcasts podfade and I'm finding that to be very true. Many of the podcast I'd love to connect with when I look them up have stopped producing months ago. I would like help in finding the best podcasts I can connect with. -Edwin Don't limit your options to only experts in your niche. Find anyone who speaks to your ideal clients. One of my clients is an accountant. His ideal clients are entrepreneurs. When he looks for partners, he isn't only looking for other accountants or even experts in the financial space. He is finding partners by looking for experts speaking to entrepreneurs. I could be a partner for him, because my audience if full of entrepreneurs. This client could partner with funnel experts, mindset coaches, social media marketing pros, or a variety of other influencers. Don't limit your scope. Find people speaking to your ideal clients. When you find a great partner, ask for referrals. Get them to introduce you to others. Once you get the wheel turning, you'll gain momentum. Have fun with it.   YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE I would love to help you with your biggest challenge. Email your question or biggest challenge to coach@podcasttalentcoach.com. You can also get an hour of my coaching to build your podcast strategy. You can apply for that call at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/apply.

WoW Classic Fresh start servers are coming up in Classic SWTOR The guild is still doing MFN on Tuesday nights at 9pm EST. We are helping everyone get their Galactic Season objectives done. Still have a couple months to finish everything up. The Public Test Server (PTS) is up with content from the next patch 7.6 on it. One of the things being tested are dynamic events, which are like world quests in other games. A new single boss operation is being tested also. Lords of Light has taken it down, but there are some different mechanics that are not working correctly right now. Should be fun when it's in the live game. There are rewards for doing 100 dynamic events and a title for defeating the operation boss. Keep an eye out for groups getting together on the PTS if you want to finish those rewards up. We have four operations (raid) teams that are running different things. Check in the SWTOR channel in discord for when spots are open and subs are needed. There are a couple teams that have some regular spots open. Join up if you want to see some different content in Star Wars: The Old Republic. FFXIV New patch is out, more MSQ, more Alliance Raid, and you can combine level 1 outfits in the glamour dresser so they only take up one slot instead of many. Also, update your adventure plates! Overcoming Your Fears – PTC 516

We talk a lot about attracting your ideal clients by being your authentic self on your podcast. But, how do you overcome your fears that come with being so vulnerable? CONQUER YOUR FEAR AND SELF DOUBT Self doubt is not uncommon. When I have strategy calls with podcasters, we discuss their biggest challenges and fears. One coach asked me, "Do I really have anything of value to offer? Will anyone listen even listen to what I have to say?" There are probably times when you have that little voice in your head questioning your ideas. I get it. It takes courage to overcome those fears. There are six other fears I hear quite often YOUR FEAR OF IMPACT The first fear is making an impact. I had a coach tell me he often questions himself. He asked, "Is this making a difference in anyone's life?" Building relationships with your audience is the first step to making an impact. People follow those with whom they have a relationship. And relationships start with getting to know each other well. Share your story. WASTED TIME Another fear is wasting time. I was talking with Mike about launching her podcast. When I asked what was holding him back, she asked me, "What if it doesn't work? It would be a lot of time and money wasted." Be clear on your purpose and your goals. You also need to be realistic on the timeline. You don't need tens of thousands of people listening. Success only requires having a passionate audience that loves what you have. You don't need everyone. Success comes with a passionate tribe. Ignore the rest. I LOOK LIKE A FRAUD One coach told me, "I'm more worried about being seen as a fraud." This fear often comes from how we perceive ourselves rather than how others perceive us. Your success isn't about your content. It's about who you are being on your podcast. When you speak with confidence, you're seen as an authority. But when you doubt yourself, you are seen as unsure and less believable. This is when people start to doubt you. It comes from doubting yourself. Believe in yourself. Be strong. WE FORGET WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW One common fear people tell me is, "Who am I that these people would want to talk to me?" This comes because we often forget what it was like when we didn't know what we know now. Think back when you first started down your journey. Go back to the time when you decided to learn about your superpower. Did you know how to do everything you know now? Of course not. You barely knew where to start. Over the years, you learned from the best. You learned all the details. Remember when you first started out and you looked at the experts in your niche with amazement? You were asking, "How do they do that? It will be so great when I'm where they are." Today, it is all second nature to you. But there are people who are starting where you started years ago. Those are the people who are ready to listen to you. You are also influential enough that great guests want to be on your show. Everybody loves exposure. You just need to reach out. PODFADING One other big fear that I hear often is the fear of failure. When I asked about her biggest fear, Denise told me, "I fear that I will fail. That I will be one of the 80% that lets the podcast die out." Podfading is a real threat. There are three reasons podcasters give up and die out. The first reason happens when they realize podcasting is more work than they thought it was going to be. They don't have a plan in place to consistently produce the show every week without eating all their time. The second reason happens when they realize the podcast doesn't grow as fast as they thought it would. They don't have a system in place to methodically grow their audience. The final reason happens when they realize the podcast doesn't generate revenue as fast as they thought it would. They don't have a strategy in place to use the podcast to attract their ideal clients. FEAR OF SUCCESS The last fear I want to share is one often overlooked. There is a fear on the other side of the coin. This is one that many don't consider. Kris and I were discussing her podcast launch. As we were getting ready to go through the process, I asked about her biggest fear. She said she had a fear of success. Kris said, "If I grow too far too fast, I'm afraid I won't be able to handle it mentally or physically." It's easy to sit in the preparation phase. You can't fail while you're preparing. The risk comes when you actually launch in life. Many people are hesitant to admit the fear of success is holding them back. Take the first step. Lean into your superpower and see what happens. OVERCOMING YOUR FEARS On this episode, I want to share a conversation I had with Michael Devous Jr. Michael is a dynamic force in the world of entrepreneurship and personal development. With over three decades of experience in the entertainment industry, he has honed his skills as a performer, producer, and motivational speaker. As the founder of Devous Media Holdings and the visionary behind "The Fearless Road" and "Fearless Thinking" podcasts, as well as The Ascend Hub community, Michael is dedicated to providing entrepreneurs with the tools, resources, and connections they need to thrive. During this conversation, we talk about overcoming your fears and learning to believe in yourself. Enjoy the conversation. Podfading is defined as to stop podcasting all of a sudden without notice. So sorry about that, but we are back with what I believe Webster defines as “a real humdinger.” We are beginning the story of Bacardi. Do you think you know about this staple of liquor shelves, I'm willing to bet you don't. So relax as we begin to peel back the layers of this tale, and maybe, Have a Drink.

Podcasts can fade for various reasons, and the specific factors can vary depending on the individual circumstances of each podcast. However, some common reasons why podcasts may fade include: Lack of Consistency: Inconsistency in publishing episodes can lead to a loss of audience engagement. Listeners often expect a regular release schedule, whether it's weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. If a podcast fails to meet these expectations, listeners may lose interest and move on to other content. Content Quality and Relevance: Podcasts that fail to deliver valuable and engaging content may experience a decline in listenership. If the topics covered are not interesting, relevant, or well-presented, listeners may lose interest over time. It's essential for podcasters to understand their target audience and consistently provide content that meets their expectations. Limited Marketing and Promotion: Effective marketing and promotion are crucial for the success of a podcast. Even if a podcast has excellent content, it may struggle to gain traction if it's not effectively promoted. Podcasters need to leverage social media, collaboration with other podcasters, and other marketing strategies to reach a wider audience. Without proper promotion, a podcast may remain undiscovered or struggle to expand its listener base. It's worth noting that the podcasting landscape is highly competitive, and success often requires a combination of quality content, consistency, and effective promotion. Additionally, factors such as changing interests, evolving trends, and external events can also impact a podcast's popularity over time. Successful podcasters often adapt to audience preferences, stay updated on industry trends, and continuously work to improve their content and outreach strategies. This is episode 8, and it's a hot one! We are back to address some of the comments we received from our most recent blog post, “The Great Resignation”. Wow! Who knew that this topic would resonate with so many people!? Apparently, when you talk about quitting your job, people have a lot to say. We also wanted to come back on the month anniversary of our podcast, and with it being the 8th episode, we are already ahead of most podcast series! You see, there is a term called, podfading. We learned this term from Flobo Boyce. Podfading happens to about 75% of podcasts, and most podcasts don't make it to the 8th episode, so we feel pretty excited to have made it this far. We're on a roll! In this episode we chat about: What is “The Great Resignation” and where the term originated from. Why are people quitting their jobs in record numbers? What are people doing when they quit their jobs? Rage quitting– people who are so fed up with their current work situation and/or conditions that they would rather take the risk of whatever comes their way after quitting, than deal with another day of working for their current employer. How do we get in that Bored Ape Yacht Club, anyway? Ok, we don't answer that question, but we do talk about it. The responses we received from the blog- wow, you all had a lot to say. Shannon's resignation story. If you are someone who is not so happy with what you are doing, and/or looking for resources to freelance, or pick-up a side hustle while you work towards your own Great Resignation, we put together a Free Freelance Resource Guide you can download. More Thoughts On How To Avoid Podfading

Podfading, or where podcasts have stopped releasing new episodes, is more common than you realize. January is one of the most popular months to start a podcast. But what happens to those podcasts in February or March? This is when podfading starts. Here are more thoughts on how to avoid podfading, whether you're just about to begin podcasting or already have been for a while. Know the reason why you're podcasting to avoid podfading If you just want to build a following or have profit as an end goal, you are going to be quickly disappointed if that doesn't happen as soon as you would like. If at all. Your podcast topic needs to energize you One of the easiest ways to avoid podfading is to be genuinely interested in what your podcast topic is about. Who wants to discuss something they don't really care for? Who wants to listen to a podcaster who really doesn't care about the topic they're podcasting about? Get the help you need You are going to find there are many tasks to be done before that episode is ready for release. It needs editing (I talk about this in the previous episode about podfading), it needs show notes, it needs to be uploaded…the tasks start to add up! And that doesn't even start the conversation about promoting your back catalog of episodes. If you just want to record your episode and hand off the rest to someone else, that's perfectly normal. And it makes sense to protect your time. Your focus needs to be on creating content for your listeners. You're allowed to take a break It's okay to take some time away from creating your podcast! Before taking a break, make sure you let your listeners know. You don't want them wondering where you are or worse, unfollowing the podcast because they think you're done. Rediscover your purpose Ask yourself, do you know what you talked about on your podcast 3 episodes ago, without looking? If you're finding yourself in a relentless rhythm of recording and releasing, you've probably forgotten about the reason that you're podcasting. Determine what your “why” is and evaluate if it has changed. Revisit your podcast's mission statement. It's okay to transition from one “why” to another.  Find inspiration Getting inspired again may not be as difficult as you think! Maybe there's someone who you look up to in your content niche. Get them on as a guest! Hearing their thoughts may foster some new inspiration in your podcast. Podcasting is a MARATHON, not a sprint. Be patient, take action and apply yourself. Let's talk about what podcasting can do for your business in the next 12-months. Whether you're B2C or B2B, we can create a content marketing strategy that will work for you. Podfading, or where podcasts have stopped releasing new episodes, is more common than you realize. With the reasons wide-ranging, they usually fall into one of the following categories. Lack of any planning Topics that are focusing on the wrong areas Expectations that are unrealistic Over-complicating the process How To Avoid Podfading It's all about building on a solid plan and creating a sustainable content creation method You need to know  why you want to podcast, who you want to reach with your podcast, and  why you want to reach them with a podcast. In this episode, I want to cover some key points that I think are enough to save almost any podcaster from podfading. Create a List of Potential Future Episodes When you've identified your overall topic, and the people you want to reach, breaking this down into episodes is important for a number of reasons. Seeing a list of potential episodes lets you focus on the direction of the show.  Block Out Time & Stay Sustainable Knowing how much time you can dedicate to working on your podcast is crucial. This includes from initial thought on the episode topic to publishing the episode. Rather than worry what is the best publishing frequency to grow your podcast, choose a release frequency that's sustainable for you. That might be weekly, bi-weekly, or you might even want to consider podcasting in seasons. Make a choice, and work out how much time you'll need each week to manage it. Block out that time. It's a non-negotiable. Make Your Setup Easy & Accessible Working with Circle270Media gives my clients the luxury of a permanent setup or studio environment for recording. There's a decent chance you don't. This is where simplicity can trump having lots of your own sophisticated and complex equipment. When recording an episode means spending lots of time setting gear up, then taking it down afterward, you're at risk of losing your motivation. The more gear in your recording chain, the more risk there is of not switching it on properly too. Doing a great interview and not actually recording it will most certainly put doubts in your mind.  Don't Get Bogged Down By Editing Editing will make your podcast flow better, and make it sound more polished and professional. Editing should be used sparingly, not as a crutch. This means being more mindful of the structure and focus of your episodes before and during the recording session. Treat your recording sessions as if you're live. This will tighten up your presentation skills. Recording longer episodes on the basis that you can clean them up in editing will add hours of unnecessary work to your schedule.  Or the additional cost to you if you pay an editor. Experiment With Formats You're the boss of your podcast. This gives you a lot of freedom. Even though I just mentioned that planning is vital, there are certain things that should remain flexible. One of those is definitely your podcast format. Many new podcasters will declare things like “I'm going to do a 20-minute interview show.” Why 20 minutes? What if your conversation lasts 15 minutes, or 40 minutes? And then, why just interviews? What if you've got something you'd like to discuss directly with the listener. You can make a case for having your listener expect certain things from your show. But in the early stages, the small audience you have won't “expect” anything from your format. Forget Apple Podcasts Even Exists The most important thing you need to think about regarding Apple Podcasts is submitting your show there. Once you've been approved and listed in there, then forget about it. Set it and forget it.  Forget the hype around a ‘New & Noteworthy launch plan' or anything else like that. You're creating content for your audience, not Apple, or Spotify, or Google Podcasts, or fill in the blank. When your podcast strategy is based on creating the best possible episodes for your listeners, your...

Episode #040Kyle interviews Tim using the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting. We discuss the differences between pausing your podcast, podfading your podcast, and podwrecking your podcast.Tim goes deep into his challenges with producing Clearly Obtuse and how he plans to get back on track. What did we learn?Step 1 — Acceptance: Acceptance is Step One of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to ask yourself to admit that your podcast is worth working on or let it podfade.Step 2 — Humility: Humility is Step Two of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to believe that you don't know everything about podcasting.Step 3 — Clarity: Clarity is Step Three of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to get real and honest feedback about your podcast if you are ever going to improve it.Step 4 — Insight: Insight is Step Four of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to take an honest look at your podcast and prioritize what you need to fix or improve.Step 5 — Commit: Committing to your podcast requires you to get disciplined about your goals if you have any chance of guarding against distractions.Step 6 — Focus: Focus is Step Six of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to rebuild your motivation and find your hunger for podcasting before you can truly get back to podcasting.Step 7 — Reflection: Reflection is Step Seven of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting and requires you to earn your right to be podcasting by first doing the work, celebrating your wins, and then getting to stay podcasting by never forgetting what you have endured to get here.Step 8 — Fellowship: Fellowship is Step Eight of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting asks you to go find other podcasters, learn about their journey, and discover that you are not alone.Step 9 — Mentorship: It's time to actively give back what you have learned to the podcasting community and become the mentor that keeps other podcasters from podfading.MentionsClearly Obtuse PodcastVerge of the Dude Podcast25 Minutes of Silence PodcastSleep With Me PodcastCreate Art PodcastPodfader PodcastQuotes“Some podcasts need to be ‘podburied'. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Childless not by Choice Podcast, where my mission is to recognize and speak to childless not by choice women and men around the world. Civilla Morgan here. I am spreading the great news that we can live a joyful, relevant, and fulfilled life, although we did not have the children we so wanted. I also welcome you even if you do not fit the demographic. Maybe you did not want children, maybe you have children. Thanks for tuning in.  Welcome to episode --120! When I started this podcast I had no idea. I could just end that sentence right there. I mean, no idea what I was doing, no idea of the deep valley moments of lost episodes, ruined episodes, tears of frustration. And the mountaintop moments where I got the interview! The authors, the suggested episode topics from people listening from halfway around the world. The emails and Facebook Messenger messages from people who wanted to remain anonymous. The words of encouragement, the care package from a listener in Hawaii or funding for lavalier mics from a listener way in the northern part of our planet. I had no idea.   I had no idea I would make it to 120 episodes. Podfading is a real thing. It typically happens around episode 7.  You just realize this podcasting thing is not for you, or maybe life gets in the way. And you stop, promising yourself you will be back. But… And life did happen to me. As my mom became more ill, I went from two episodes per month to one. I’m on my third podcast producer in five years. I have decided that going forward I will take a two-month break in October and November. That saved my sanity last year.      I’m humbled. I’m thankful to you for listening and tuning in month after month. I’m thankful for your episode suggestions. I am thankful for your letters and notes as they encourage me just as much as you say this podcast encourages you. Every once in a while I still have imposter syndrome. But I push through and keep writing and creating. I mean, am I an imposter if I’ve been writing since I was 11 years old?  Maybe. But I love to write, I love to create with my writing.  And look, there’s a 120 episode just about five-year-old podcast here. I had no idea! Thank you! Now please tell someone about this podcast!     Patreon Contributors: I would also like to thank my patrons for their monthly financial contributions to the platform. If you would like to join the Patreon family of monthly contributors, visit patreon.com/childlessnotbychoice, and set up your monthly contribution for as little as $5.00 per month! There is a pandemic going on, there is social unrest in America, we watched a man murdered on video in broad daylight, in 2020, solely because of the color of his skin. And here we are thinking it's the 21st century and we are more civilized.   Other countries marched in commiseration and agreement with us, that police brutality against people of color must stop. We saw you on the news, and we thank you, from New Zealand to South Korea, to Australia, to Scotland, to South Africa, to Canada. The Indigenous people of Australia, the Maori, The Native Americans, we see you. We are all human first. And if we are alive, if we made it through the birth canal, we deserve at the minimum, basic human respect.   There is social unrest in other countries, for various reasons. Wherever you are listening from there is probably some breaking news. There’s always breaking news.  And there is a lot of stress. Our own personal stresses. Bills, joblessness due to the pandemic or not, caring for loved ones, worrying about our personal future and the future of our respective countries.  Yes, we childless not by choice women have worries too. I have said it in previous episodes, we pay taxes into school districts to which we have no kids enrolled. That’s not a hater or hateful comment. It is a fact.  We have concerns. They may be different concerns than those with children, but they are just as valid.   Whew, talk about stress! What to do?!  Well, I talk about what to do in episode 118. How to keep the stress levels down, getting mental health help by talking to a trusted friend or counselor. And taking time for yourself. I talk about recognizing and dealing with triggers in episode 94. Be sure to check out both episodes, links are in the show notes.  Also in the show notes is a four-minute recording called ‘Privilege is like a Blanket’. Check it out!    So, in light of everything that is going on, and although I created that four-minute episode I mentioned about privilege being like a blanket, I want to go deeper.  Because I would bet all I have, that America is not the only country where racism exists.  And more to the point, it is not the only country where implicit bias and racism are built into every part of the human existence. From kindergarten to the nursing home, people of color have been and are being treated with implicit bias. I put a link in the show notes about a doctor, an educated man, who is also a lawmaker, asking if the virus is affecting people of color more because we’re not washing our hands. Yes, it’s 2020 and people with this filthy mindset are walking among us. It’s scary. This guy could have been my doctor. I’m not a mind reader. Discernment of his stupidity might be the only thing that might have saved me from continuing to go to him. So, if implicit bias exists in all aspects of our lives, even healthcare, what about the healthcare of childless not by choice women?  Aha! Great question.  Women who have been sterilized down through history: It's estimated that as many as 25-50 percent of Native American women were sterilized between 1970 and 1976. Forced sterilization programs are also a part of history in Puerto Rico, where sterilization rates are said to be the highest in the world. Google--Jan 29, 2016 Imagine going to the hospital for a common surgical procedure such as an appendectomy, only to find out afterward that you’d been sterilized. In the 20th century, untold numbers of women of color endured such life-altering experiences in part because of medical racism. Black, Native American, and Puerto Rican women report being sterilized without their consent after undergoing routine medical procedures or after giving birth. Others say they unknowingly signed documentation allowing them to be sterilized or were coerced into doing so. The experiences of these women strained relations between people of color and healthcare personnel. In the 21st century, members of communities of color still widely distrust medical officials. Women who have had surgeries they did not need, and yes this can happen to women of any race: An estimated 7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed annually with the number of unnecessary hospital stays around 8.9 million a year...  --Google So, as we close out here, I wanted to remind you of a couple of things. If you are a member of the Childless not by choice with Civilla Morgan Facebook group, we had a little get together in our Facebook group on Mother’s Day! And now we are planning on having another get together in July, but this time it will be in Zoom so that more of us can come on video. Facebook only allows two people at a time. That’s not a real party! So, there is a poll going in the group, be sure to choose the date that works for you. Majority wins. I will post the date and time in the group, and the Zoom link a few minutes before we start. Be sure to check out the show notes. I put links in there to the two episodes I discussed in this episode, and there’s a bunch of other stuff. Kyle has been podcasting for 6 years, and I'm getting close to 6 years myself so between the two of us we talk about the steps we took to decide to podfade. We had such a great time talking podcasting and how to avoid the pitfalls that led us to podfade past shows. Running a podcast is a long-term commitment. It also takes hard work and patience to know the right strategies that are necessary for its success. There are also times wherein you will need the help of an expert in the field of podcasting. In this episode, Adam Jaffrey is back with us to share his knowledge about saving a stalling podcast. He talks about different strategies for those who are not growing their audience as much as they like and not generating revenue with their podcast. Check out the show notes and listen to the podcast for a valuable perspective on the business of podcasting! About Our Guest: Adam Jaffrey is the Strategy Director of Wavelength Creative. Based in Melbourne, Wavelength Creative helps brands develop high-quality podcasts from the ground up. Adam hosts two podcasts, Customer Experience Leaders and MATE: Marketing, Advertising, Technology, and Entrepreneurship. Adam has also helped numerous clients as a digital marketing consultant. Saving a Stalling Podcast Definition of a Stalling Podcast A stalling podcast is a show that is unable to connect well with the listeners, or the number of downloads is declining. Podfading happens when a show stops producing content. It is important to note that each episode is different, so have different targets for each one. For example, a podcast about neurosurgeons in Melbourne and a podcast about ice cream must have different goals. Analyzing Your Show Knowing your brand can take up to six months. It takes time to build your skills and your audience. Every show is different. It heavily depends on how you market the show. If you release an episode every week, there is a spike of listeners for the day of release, and for the next few days, there will be a decline. Strategies for Improvement Your release dates must be predictable. You must be consistent with growing your audience. Research and reflect on your content, consistency, quality, and how you present your content. Analyze your audience’s listening behavior. Think of a generating title because that is what potential listeners see first. Use active language and questions. Don’t let the excitement subside. Package your show flawlessly, and that means having a good introduction, background music, and making sure your instrument is in the right condition. Change your content or marketing strategies. Importance of the First Minute Talk about what you promised in your title. There are 750,000 podcasts on Apple, and you need to stand out. Edit your show and leave only the necessary information. Note that every second is valuable; thus, you must respect the audience’s time. Seek External Advice You may not notice your errors since you are heavily invested in your podcast. Get opinions from other people, preferably those who are expert in marketing or content production. They can help you know the right strategy. In this episode, I detail how terrified I was to start the Business Fabulous podcast. It was the hardest thing I've ever done and I experienced a lot of anxiety, including resistance, ego, failure, and podfading.  Feel free to give me feedback on this or any episode at listener@bonnielfrank.com. Resistance: The refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument. Ego: The part inside of you that "keeps you safe" and keeps you away from harm, fear, and failure. Podfading: When someone's podcast disappears because they've quit. When a person stops producing episodes for their podcast, they have "podfaded." When someone is about to grow personally and/or professionally, they will often experience resistance. I experienced many symptoms of resistance in the months before I was able to start my podcast including anxiety, chest pains, sweating, increased periods of being distracted, less ability to focus, and procrastination. To combat my resistance, I was very intentional and I did many things including yoga, journaling, meditation and worked on bettering my sleep hygiene. I also consulted friends (bad choice) and several experienced and expert podcasters (great choice) I define the term "sleep hygiene" and describe how I amped up mine. The vast majority of entrepreneurs quit within their first five years of business. Mentioned in this episode: Breathe app Headspace app This week's CHALLENGE: Choose one or two strategies you'll use to combat your future resistance. I go over a dozen different strategies in the episode! Are you ready for more business success?  Listen here. If you enjoy this week's podcast episode, I'd love it if you would do a few things: 1. You Might Suck at Podcasting Howdy -- I’m Kyle Bondo, and this is Podfader! My weekly podcast about helping you keep your podcast from podfading, especially when the drive for new and interesting content becomes a struggle. S1:E8 -- You Might Suck at Podcasting Step Two of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting is Humility. This step centers on believing that you don’t know everything about podcasting or realizing that your way may not be the best way to podcast. That’s a tough mindset to crack because it requires you to admit that your podcast could be better. If you’ve already come around to agreeing that your podcast and your podcasting skills are worth working on. Now you need to have a real conversation with yourself on what “worth working on” really means to you. Which is why I go back to the name of this episode: You might suck at podcasting! Well, do you? How would you know?   Getting to the Root Causes with Five Whys The Five Whys works something likes this: #1 -- I stopped podcasting. WHY? #2 -- I didn’t want to do it anymore. WHY? #3 -- I take a long time to create an episode. WHY? #4 -- I don’t have any ideas on what to talk about. WHY? #5 -- I wait until the last minute to plan episodes. The root cause in this example takes a general problem statement: “I stopped podcasting”, and drills down through the potential causes to find a possible root cause. You may have already discovered that I can answer the WHY’s any way I want to. Which means I can deflect and hide the real reasons for why I stopped podcasting. But if you are serious about coming back to podcasting, then you have to have a very honest conversation with yourself. By using a root cause approach to investigate your own technical, emotional, and motivational skills within your podcast, you can discover a lot about the reasons something happened.   Podfaders don’t happen overnight They podfade after a dozen tiny things go wrong in their production, their expectations, and even their lives. Using the Five Whys is just one way to be honest with yourself. You know the real reasons behind your problems. That is the core lesson of Step Two of Nine Steps Back to Podcasting. Having the humility to admit you’re not perfect, and the courage to do something about it. If you can do that, then you’re ready to move forward with a much clearer understanding of what you need to work on to improve.  About the Show Podfader, hosted by veteran podcaster Kyle Bondo, focuses on the challenges of keeping your podcast going and the drive we all have has creators to keep our podcasts going with new and interesting content. Do you want to be a podcaster? Howdy -- I’m Kyle Bondo, and this is Podfader! My weekly podcast about helping you keep your podcast from podfading, especially when the drive for new and interesting content becomes a struggle. S1:E7 -- Is Your Podcast Worth It? Step One of the Nine Steps Back to Podcasting is Acceptance. This step centers on you either admitting that your podcast is worth working on, or admitting that your done with that podcast and letting it podfade. That’s a tough pill to swallow. To podcast or not to podcast, that is the question! Well, which is it? Are you ready to stop pretending you’re a podcaster and letting go of your podcast for good? Or do you really want to do the hard, sometimes thankless work of building a podcast worthy of an audience? These are both equally easy and difficult questions at the same time. Easy as in it is easy to SAY you want to give up or carry on. But difficult in what the repercussions will be when you choose. Sure, podfading seems easy... at first. But it comes with a whole assortment of sadness and regret. Sometimes that sadness and regret can gnaw at you until the next thing you do. Deciding to buckle down and get back to podcasting is the opposite. All the difficulty is in the beginning when you are trying to create something from nothing. Once it exists and is in the world, then it can easier to keep going. It is the stopping, the long pause that makes an existing podcast hard to start again. The easy of stopping, of just putting it all down for a while is very seductive. But at what cost? This leads to the first of many tough challenges and introspections you will need to face. They are like the Trials of Hercules. Nobody else can face them but you. And they start with a simple question: Do you want to be a podcaster? Well, do you?   About the Show Podfader, hosted by veteran podcaster Kyle Bondo, focuses on the challenges of keeping your podcast going and the drive we all have has creators to keep our podcasts going with new and interesting content. Podfader #4 Howdy -- I’m Kyle Bondo, and this is Podfader! My weekly podcast about helping you keep your podcast from podfading, especially when the drive for new and interesting content becomes a struggle. S1:E4 -- Release the Podcast Throttle No one has ever made a rule that prevents your daily, weekly, or monthly podcast from changing its release schedule, taking time off, or modifying its length from time to time. What does it mean to throttle your podcast? Throttling your podcast is defined as reducing or decreasing the number of episodes you release. This could be any kind of decision that results in a slow down, pause, or even complete stop of your podcast. If you think of your podcast as an engine, each episode is the fuel for that engine. No fuel, no engine. The throttle to that engine is your release schedule. You either throttle your podcasting engine on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Somewhere you decided -- hopefully before you launched your first episode -- on what timeframe you were going to release your episodes. The throttle is set to that specific schedule.  Release your podcast every Thursday? Then your throttle is set to a weekly release schedule starting the moment your release your episode on Thursday and running until you release your next episode on the following Thursday. Then it repeats. This is your throttle tempo -- or the rhythm of your own podcast release cycle.   Podcasting Disruptions #1 - Late -- is when you produce your podcast but you don't get it published at the same time each time.#2 - Pause -- is when you stop producing your podcast for a short period of time. #3 - Hiatus -- is when there is an interruption in the intensity to which you produce your podcast.#4 - Podfade -- is when the pause or interruption that stopped you from producing a podcast become permanent. Reasons to Throttle #1 -- Need to Pull Back #2 -- You need to finish something else #3 -- Something Didn't Work #4 -- It's not fun anymore #5 -- Just need a break Alternatives to Podcast Throttling #1 - Try changing your podcast from Episodic to Serial or Seasonal.#2 - Try to make better use of your time by doing one a month batch recording.#3 - Try going back to your episode archives and recycle your best episodes with a "Best Of" group of shows.#4 - Reduce the size of your episodes to produce Short Episodes.#5 - Take advantage of quick episodes where you check in with your audience for an update on what's coming next About the Show Podfader, hosted by veteran podcaster Kyle Bondo, focuses on the challenges of keeping your podcast going and the drive we all have has creators to keep our podcasts going with new and interesting content. S1:E3 -- Come Back to Podcasting Podcasting will always provide you with greater opportunities for discovery, audience growth, and monetization than blogging or video could ever wish to do.   An excuse I’ve heard podfaders give for leaving their podcast. It has to do with their confidence in podcasting as a medium for delivering a message. Somewhere, they were told that blogging and video are far more effective. What reason do they give for the effectiveness of blogging and video? Simply put, they claim that more people -- way more people -- are familiar with how to find it. With a blog -- it's a Link to a webpage. They can share a link on any social media, and it goes right to their blog. Done. With a video -- it's a Link to a video. They can share a link on any social media, and it goes right to Youtube. Or it will play right in the post. Again... done. And they are right. Podcasting does not have this advantage. You really can’t put the audio from your podcast into a Facebook post. You can put something that kind-of works like that -- even if it's a snippet of audio. But it is not the same user experience as having a video play. And let’s not forget that Facebook is really not an audio platform. You can also add a podcast player to your website that could be found by an including a website link. Someone could go to that page and hear your latest episode too. However, if they start to see what else is on your podcast website, they player usually stops unless it's super special. And the mobile experience with that setup is very disappointing. To get the same experience as video, they need to connect your podcast to a dedicated player. That’s if they even know what a dedicated player is. There are still a few extra steps in the podcast listening experience before it becomes seamless. But that is their main argument. Because it’s not seamless -- not yet -- it's not as effective as blogging or video. That is a very powerful claim -- especially if it can convince podcasters to leave podcasting altogether. But is it true? I take this on one medium at a time...   About the Show Podfader, hosted by veteran podcaster Kyle Bondo, focuses on the challenges of keeping your podcast going and the drive we all have has creators to keep our podcasts going with new and interesting content. If you’re a struggling podcaster, Podfader will be your sanctuary to get you through the messy middle of any podcasting strategy. Stop fading and start casting! Onward Nation

Stephen is the CEO of Predictive ROI and the host of the Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, speaker, trainer, and his digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and other media. Good Morning Onward Nation…I’m Stephen Woessner and welcome to this week’s solocast…Episode 440. If you have been listening to Onward Nation for a while — you know that I like sharing strategies along with all of their tactical step-by-step processes that help business owners create predictable, measurable, and repeatable success for themselves and their teams. Today’s solocast will be no different. We are going to dig into how hosting a podcast can be a perfect strategy for owners of business-to-business professional services firms. I am going to take you deep into a sneak peek of the pages of my latest book, entitled Profitable Podcasting. The book will not be released by my publisher until September but I want to begin sharing some of the insights now so you can begin to apply. This book is comprehensive — and it is a research-based book that shares our full blueprint or “recipe” for podcast success with you. Each and every step is presented in complete transparency. Not a single step has been be hidden from you. It’s all here, in plain sight. Within the book, I will walk you behind the green curtains of Onward Nation and Predictive ROI so you can learn our proven system. You will also have access to in-depth insights from 10 business owners just like you. Each of them decided to create a podcast to change the game – and then did it. Their impressive stories are shared in full transparency too. But why write such a comprehensive book? Because you deserve a resource that eliminates the guesswork, demystifies the process and gives you a clear and concise strategy for going from zero to launch in about 30 days. Only limited resources were available when my Predictive ROI team and I decided to create Onward Nation. Sure, there were plenty of hyperbole packed eBooks and webinars that led me into the sales funnels of information marketers, but those resources lacked depth, and candidly, they lacked business acumen. We quickly consumed the resources and were left with more questions than answers. Plus, the resources lacked full transparency. They typically provided just enough to get you interested in learning more, and then pitched a $997 online training or mastermind program. All of which drove me crazy and didn’t solve our problem. Not awesome! But there are much more important reasons I decided to go as deep as possible with the book. In my opinion, podcasting – as a medium – deserves a long-form guide, an encyclopedia of how to do it right. When I interviewed Gary Vaynerchuk before the release of his social media book Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook (by the way — still the best book on the market regarding social media and the business strategy behind it all), we discussed how it wasn’t just a social media book, but a business book that would elevate social media to a new level of legitimacy. My hope is that this book will raise the bar for podcasting just as Gary did for social media marketing. So on the surface, Profitable Podcasting looks like a podcasting book. But it’s actually a business book about how business owners just like you are using podcasting to grow their companies, expand their platforms, and build nations of true fans. I promise you — each chapter includes step-by-step instructions so you can create, launch, market, and monetize your own podcast. The book includes checklists, production schedules, weekly goal tracking, social media strategies with visual examples, promotional emails, guest invitations, exclusive access to private online video tutorials, and other resources including time-saving third-party tools. I am excited to share this resource because small business has been my focus for 23 years. This is my third book devoted to helping small business owners succeed. Helping small business owners is deeply rewarding for several reasons. First, having owned five small businesses, I know that in today’s economy, if one wants to have an impact (as I strive to do), then small business represents a tremendous opportunity. Small business owners are the lifeblood of our economy. Second, the 28 million small businesses operating in the United States today, according to the Small Business Administration, account for 55 percent of all jobs and 54 percent of total revenue generated. I want to help as many business owners as possible grow so they can create more jobs and improve the lives of their families, employees, and communities. Third, this book tackles the top challenge facing most business owners: According to a recent survey of 1,100 small business owners, 43 percent of respondents identified growing revenue as a top challenge facing U.S. businesses in 2016. That’s more than 12 million businesses expected to face the same challenge. Driving this number down is a worthy goal of this book. And if you know my family history — and our story — you will understand why I am so passionate about the success of small business owners. But…there are significant challenges to small business owners who want to have a podcast. It is not as simple as just turning on the microphone, recording a conversation, and distributing it out to iTunes. Sure you can do that…but it is highly unlikely that your time and effort will pay off for your business. So for today’s solocast…I am going to address the challenges that typically paralyze business owners from either getting started — or — keep them from achieving the success they aspire to achieve from their podcast. So here we go, Onward Nation. Ready for the deep dive? Rock solid awesome! First…a podcast is just a tool. It’s just a platform, Onward Nation. A platform is simply a conduit for distributing or sharing content. No platform in and of itself will help your business grow revenue. This is a very important point. Just because you have a podcast — does not mean — that prospective customers or even an audience will begin to flock to you. Not at all. In order for your podcast to be of value to your business, there needs to be purpose behind the guests you invite to be on your show. There needs to be purpose behind the questions you ask your guests. There needs to be purpose behind how you nurture and take care of your guests before their interviews and after their episodes have aired. And ultimately, you need a strategy for how your podcast will grow your business, expand your platform, and build your nation of true fans. Having interviewed nearly 500 of today’s top business owners – and having talked with, consulted with, or worked with many of them in producing and launching their own podcasts – I can say with certainty that there are typically three primary challenges or questions that well up in the mind of a business owner who is considering a podcast. Some business owners need to confront all three; others may just need to confront two. But I assure you, Onward Nation — every business owner will need to confront at least one. Question #1: How will my podcast make money and help grow my business? Question #2: How much time with this take me? Question #3: How will I get guests? (Or, the variation: What if no one accepts my invitation to be a guest on the show?) I will devote a future solocast to the revenue topic. But for this week — we will dive deep into Questions 2 and 3 because they are critically important to getting your mindset right before heading down the podcasting path. If you don’t get your mindset right, I assure you, there will be setbacks and challenges along the way. Without the correct preparation you will be tempted to quit – and you likely will…quit. Most podcasters quit after just 7 episodes. It is called “Podfading” — because a business owner launches his or her weekly show — then expects the show to set the world on fire just because it is available — and when it doesn’t — they quit after not even two months. Really sad. However, if I help you properly set expectations, when the challenges come your way, instead of being tempted to quit, you can confidently say to yourself, “Ah, Stephen said this would happen and that I’d feel this way” – and you will push forward. Don’t ever quit, Onward Nation. Let me help you AVOID THE TIME TRAP. One of the questions I am asked most often by business owners who have considered a podcast for their business is, “How much time will having a podcast take out of my schedule?” It’s a great question because we should all protect our schedules. Most business owners assume the answer is 10 hours a week – and that the solution will require them to add staff and make other investments. But here’s the reality: You can have an awesome, top-rated podcast in iTunes by investing less than four hours per month. Yes. Four hours. Would you grow revenues faster if you invested more time? Likely yes, but four hours a month is an excellent place to start. So why would business owners assume that my answer would be something like 10 hours a week? Because then it would be easy for them to justify why they hadn’t pursued it more seriously. But in fact, it isn’t the perceived time commitment that stops a small business owner from having a podcast. It is fear. Fear often rears its ugly head in an attempt to derail the entrepreneurial journey you’re on. Fear will beat you to your knees if you let it. Fear will cheat you out of success in all aspects of your business, including developing a great platform like a podcast so you can grow revenue and build a nation of true fans. Once business owners are assured that their time investment will only be about four hours per month, a second challenge typically comes to mind – this one with the subconscious goal of thwarting the podcast from gaining any additional momentum; to snuff out the fire that was building. But what will be YOUR BIGGEST MOST PAINFUL CHALLENGE on your path to use podcasting to grow your business? Well, you may be asking yourself the question right now, “Stephen, how will I get guests?” Or maybe the variation: “What if no one accepts the invitation to be on my show?” These two fear-laden questions should serve as warning signs that something sinister is lurking. If you let them, they will keep you in check and prevent you from moving forward. The truth is, we all face such challenges. It’s just that some people are better than others at pushing themselves past them. In my opinion, this challenge may be blocking your success not just with podcasting, but in other areas of your business as well. The challenge is known as the “Imposter Syndrome.” Clinical psychologists Dr. Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne Imes coined the term in 1978 to describe high-achieving individuals who are unable to internalize their accomplishments and who consequently fear being exposed as a “fraud.” Actual, objective evidence of their competence doesn’t matter to those who exhibit the syndrome. They remain convinced that they’re frauds. They feel that they don’t deserve the success they have achieved. Calling it “luck” or “good timing,” they never take credit for their accomplishments. Perhaps they believe that they’ve tricked others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they actually are. Now let’s take that definition and break it down into its two core ingredients. Ingredient #1: the inability to internalize accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud.” Have you ever walked into a meeting and felt that you weren’t worthy — or that you didn’t belong there? Perhaps someone on the selection committee, the award committee, or board of directors had made a mistake in selecting you. Heck, maybe even some of your colleagues, family members, or friends even validated your own suspicions and asked you the seemingly innocent question: “So why did they pick you?” I began to learn about the imposter syndrome back in 2009, around the time my first book was published. I was an academic staff member at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. After my book became popular with small business owners, several of the UW campuses around the state asked me to teach a class at their respective campuses. Awesome. One day I mentioned this opportunity to a family friend: I told him I headed to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay the next day to teach a class based on my SEO book. My friend looked at me and said, “Well, why are they having you teach the class? Couldn’t they find someone in Green Bay to teach it?” My friend was not trying to be hurtful — not in the least. But those comments hit me hard. Never mind that my SEO book was #3 in the United States, or that I had just been interviewed for Inc. Magazine, or any of the other credibility indicators. When he asked me that question, I actually paused and thought about it. “Yeah, why are they hiring me to teach? Am I good enough? Do I have what it takes? Am I the best they could bring in? Do I deserve to be there? Am I a fraud? Do I even know what I’m talking about?” There is nothing unique about my story. We have all had these experiences where we begin to hear the voice in our heads whispering — or in some cases shouting — “Who do you think you are?” The imposter syndrome will work hard to hold you back. High-performers with imposter syndrome may work obsessively hard to prevent people from discovering that they’re “impostors.” And talk about a vicious cycle: The hard work leads to more praise and success, which only perpetuates the impostor feelings, leading the “imposter” to work even harder, which can lead to sleep deprivation, burnout and worse. Ingredient #2: the “Imposter” takes the proof of success and passes it off as luck, timing, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they believe. Has your business ever gone through a growth spurt that you couldn’t explain? Have you ever looked around your office and suddenly realized you have some amazing people working for you and looking to you for leadership – and yet, you cannot figure out what they see in you? Have you ever felt uncomfortable before a presentation with a new client? Did you wonder why they invited you to the table? Why do we ask ourselves such lousy and unfair questions? Here’s the important point that I really want you to get. When you ask yourself, “How on earth were we able to hire such amazing employees? Don’t they know that we don’t know what in the world we’re doing?” — your brain does a funny thing…it gives you an answer. It’s a crummy answer but it’s an answer. Your brain doesn’t want to make you out to be a liar — so it gives you the answer to fit your story. You start hearing things like, “Yeah, you really pulled the wool over their eyes on that one. Hope Becky doesn’t figure it out — because if she leaves — then Tom is sure to leave the company, too.” Or, “Why did client X invite us here? We don’t really have a shot at winning this pitch, do we?” The answer you get back might be something like, “Nope, we have no chance of winning — especially if they knew about all the mistakes we made just last week on Client Z’s account. We are lucky to have kept Client Z — hope X doesn’t ask for references. Maybe we ought to back out of the process now.” What nonsense, Onward Nation! You were invited into the evaluation process because you have a stellar network — perhaps stellar credentials — and you deserve to be at the table. The voice on your shoulder — the voice whispering in your ear — is the imposter syndrome. And we all deal with it. It doesn’t matter who you are thinking of right now. Tim Ferriss, the bestselling author of The 4-Hour Workweek, has dealt with it. Joel Osteen has dealt with it. All of the incredible business leaders that grace the cover of Entrepreneur magazine deal with it. Every business owner — every political leader — every leader throughout history has dealt with this. George Washington did not feel he was worthy to be this country’s first president. No one is immune from imposter syndrome. But what is unique — and what is special — is when someone faces the fear of potential rejection. To quote the beautiful words of educator and behavior expert Dr. Marcie Beigel — a two-time Onward Nation guest: “Stephen…be scared, and then do it anyway!” I loved that. Because it is oftentimes fear — which is another way of describing imposter syndrome — gets in your way more than anything else. You may be your own biggest constraint. Not your ability to schedule guests on your show, not your ability to sell, not the market, not your lack of customers, not your pricing, not your product quality. No, it is you. You, as the owner, set the pace and tempo of your company — either fast or slow. I asked Dr. Marcie to share how business owners can reach that elusive next level. She was kind enough to map it out into three simple steps: Get clear on what the next level is — how will you know when you’re there? Walkthrough your fear; make a plan — and just do it Find a mentor — we learn best from the people who have been there So let’s look at all three of these. First, get clear on what the next level is for you and your business. Well, if imposter syndrome (aka FEAR) is making you believe you are not even worthy of your current level of success, then how could you possibly believe you’re worthy of being the host of a top-ranked podcast? Great question, right? Instead, perhaps you need to spend some time being thankful for what you have already accomplished — consciously acknowledging that what you have achieved has been well deserved because you worked hard and you applied your God-given gifts and talents to get there. Now, to realize your full potential, it’s time to leap off your current plateau and move onward to that next level. You deserve to be at the next level. You’re an expert. The first step is to give yourself permission to define that next level so you know when you, your podcast and your business have arrived. Second…be scared about the next level…and do it anyway. Kick fear to the curb. What’s the worst that could happen? Prospective customers could say no. You might make a bad decision and lose some money. An employee or a group of employees may disagree with how you’re redirecting the company and could decide to leave. Okay. Are any of these life-threatening situations? Did anyone die? No? Then move on! Stop making each decision more than it has to be. Just make a decision. Then move on. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. As Dr. Marcie said, “Be scared and then do it anyway.” Finally, find a mentor to learn from as Don Yaeger recommended in the Foreword of this book. More specifically, find a mentor or group of mentors who are all moving at a pace and tempo that is faster than you. It matters who you spend your time with — and if you spend your time with people who are moving at your current pace — or slower — those people may make you feel comfortable to be around — they may not challenge you — they may not push you or ask you tough questions — and it is easy to relax and unwind. Why? Because as Coach John Wooden once said, “You will never outperform your circle.” That’s just human nature. So you need to make sure the mentors you select are operating at a completely different level than you — a level to which you can reach and stretch. You want to get into a group of people where you don’t currently belong and then work like crazy not to get left behind. In the process you’ll expand and grow. You will then be able to leap from your current plateau onto the next rung. As Onward Nation guest Scott McKain taught me, “Stephen, you cannot reach that next rung, unless you are willing to let go of the current one you are hanging on to.” Wise words. You were meant for greatness, Onward Nation. You are instilled with an infinite abundance of talent and gifts. Don’t let something so small as fear limit all you were meant to be. Don’t give up — keep pushing — and don’t ever, ever quit. If you are going to be successful at using podcasting to drive your business onward to that next level — you need to get your mindset right first. Because when you do — you will no longer be at risk of podfading — and then the next step — will be for you to bolt on a monetization strategy to your podcast so you have an opportunity to drive significant revenue into your business. I will cover monetization in a future solocast. So with that said… I want to say thank you for taking the time to be here with me today. The BizChix Podcast: Female Entrepreneurs | Women Small Business | Biz Chix

Click for Shownotes                 I have been podcasting for over a year now. I did not have a background in radio or TV or journalism. I just believed I could do it and went for it! As a consumer of podcasts and an entrepreneur myself, I loved hearing the journey of other entrepreneurs. In the lonely world of my own software startup, these stories kept me going. But what was missing for me was hearing from women.  The majority of podcasts I listened to were of 30 year old single men interviewing other 30 year old single men.  Usually they were single.  That was so different from my life as a wife and Mom.  When a dude would interview a woman (about 10% of the time), the questions they would ask were not the ones I needed answered. So I launched The Biz Chix Podcast to give voice to woman entrepreneurs and to get answers to my own questions. I have interviewed over 150 women and I walk away each time inspired by the women, the businesses they run and the lives they are living. But the truth is (and this is hard to admit publicly), I considered quitting, throwing in the towel, giving up on at least 3 different occasions during this first year. I’m going to be honest, podcasting is way more time consuming than I ever imagined. The majority of podcasts that launch never reach the 10th episode (I just released #160). The term“Podfading” was even invented to describe the act of quitting a podcast. In January 2014, I launched The Biz Chix Podcast, when I was 7 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child (I now have a daughter that is 13, a son that it 3 and a 6 mos only baby boy). I wasn’t planning on launching while pregnant and if I had not already committed to a launch date before I found out we were expecting a new blessing, I would have delayed the launch. If you or yours has ever been pregnant, you know that the first trimester is tough. A woman’s body diverts all energy to help baby grow and to create the systems needed to sustain baby for 9 months. Let’s just say I got really tired during the first trimester, was prone to fall asleep while sitting straight up on the couch and I ate a lot of cereal.  I mean a lot! I launched the podcast by releasing 3 episodes on the first day (1/31/14) and then 1 episode a day for the first two weeks. So for the 3 weeks leading up to this I was interviewing guests 5-6 days a week to start to build up an inventory of guests. I also needed to get intro music, voiceovers and podcast artwork produced. I was initially planning on editing and doing all the post production  myself, but in order to pull off this aggressive schedule and run my other biz and household, I needed help. My husband, Mark,  is a software developer and super techie, so he easily slid into the role of editor and producer for the show. I started my normal schedule of 5 episodes a week after my initial launch. Once I passed the 50-episode mark, I started to get worn down by this schedule. We had grossly underestimated the amount of time it would take to produce a single episode. It actually takes 4-8 hours (for our team of 3 – myself, Mark and our virtual assistant Liza May) to produce one episode with the greatest variable being the time it takes to edit. Looking back, I cannot believe I kept up this rigorous schedule during my first trimester of pregnancy. Often I would take a nap from 8pm to 10pm and then get up and finish the next day’s episode. Mark would often be editing past midnight to release the episode 2-3 hours later. An exciting early win during this launch period was being ranked as a #1 New Business podcast by iTunes. If you are not a podcaster, you may not realize that this is like being ranked an Amazon bestseller. It helps people discover you and give you some “bragging” rights. An interesting note about the graphic above. Of the 12 podcasts fully visible below, 3 are no longer being produced, one did not release an episode for 5 months and two were produced by veteran podcasters who had other shows (Pat Flynn’s Ask Pat and Tim Paige’sConversion Cast). So I am clearly not the only one that has struggled with podcasting endurance. I Want to Quit Round #1 About mid-April (or 4 months in), I decided something had to change or I was going to burn out. I decided to move to a 3 day a week schedule once I reached the 75th episode milestone. This gave me room to breathe and to think about how to interact more with my audience (something I was desperately craving) besides just releasing episodes. ... see shownotes for more

Podfading, normalization, Byte Range Requests... if you've been podcasting long enough it's likely you are familiar with one or more of these terms. Podcasting has it's own language and depending on your experience level you are more or less schooled in all its jargon. Jargon is defined as, "special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand." There is plenty about podcasting that is "difficult to understand" and this show aims to help you become more fluent in the language of a craft we all love and love to share...podcasting. Elsie’s dream: to interview podcasters that have podfaded. Pretty hardcore numbers on how many podcasters ‘podfade,’ provided by Elsie. Jessica breaks out iTunes again! Conclusion: podcasting is HARD. Ya. Podcasting is never ever. You are always launching. In order for you to get your podcast together it needs to align with your precise lifestyle. Jess’s confession about her dreams of podcast episodes in the can - not so much. Bottom line: you either have it in you to do the hard work or you do not. Elsie has in fact podfaded. She knows what’s up. Your podcast workflow with yourself OR with a co-host is a key to not podfading, in addition to making sure your are clear of what you can commit to. What you expect as a payoff and what you get as a payoff might be different. Downloads and PEOPLE are different. Just FYI. You don’t seep into your listeners life if you fade. One of the biggest pay-offs for Jessica is being "noticed’ a lot more. When you first start it feels super awkard regardless of how many courses you take and how many tutorials you do! OMG. Podfading - What Is it? What Causes It? How to Avoid it (or should you?)

School of Podcasting

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2014 61:09

Today we look at the topic of podfading. We are going to examine what it is, what are the top causes, and how to avoid - and ask if you should? We get help from Jim Collison, Ryan Parker, and Rev. Kenn Blanchard. Your Audience Will Binge Listen When They Find You Steve Steward produces the Moneyplan SOS podast (learn to pay attention instead of interest), and he had a listener who found his show and downloaded a ton of episodes and listened to them all as he went on a long trip in the car. Today we talk about making great content that connects with people, and obviously Steve is doing a great job. What is Podfading? Podfaing is when your show just stops producting content. There is no "final show" it just stops. The term was invented by Scott Fletcher of the now podfaded show Podcheck Review. According to the Urban Dictionary "A podcast that after a while becomes less and less frequently updated and then blinks out altogether." The Top Six Reason People Podfade According the the Book Tricks of the Podcasting Masters from Rob Walch and Murr Laferty (A great book from 2006) they list the top five reasons people podfade. Lack of time Lack of interest Lack of material Lack of listeners Lack of funds I add to this: Lack of FUN. Lack of Time If you TURN OFF YOUR TV, you will have time to podcast. But realize there is a 4 to 1 ration. This means that for every one minute of finished podcast it will take you four minutes to produce it. You need to know this up front so you don't say I'm going to do a 30 minute podcast 5 days a week. That's 150 minutes of total episode, so multiply that by 4 and you get 600 minutes of time to create those episodes (10 HOURS). Do you have an extra 10 hours PER WEEK (40 hours per month) to produce a show that will more than likely generate zero income for the first few months? Lack of Interest I once started a "Customer Service Show" where I spotlighted my experience as an award winning customer service representative. It turned out that I just reported on the bad customer service I received everywhere I went. I sounded like a grump old man. After a few shows, I just lost interest. I wasn't really that passionate about that topic. I thought I should podcast about what I know. You should podcast about what you are passionate about. If you are not interested in your topic, maybe bring in a co-host or mix up the format. Lack of Materials My wife and I did a "Dates from Hell Show" where we told stories of horrible dates we had experienced. We thought our audience would chime in with their stories. The bad news is we didn't have an audience, and nobody chimed in. I have a tutorial at the School of Podcasting that shows how to use the Website Feedly.com to have all sort of content come to you. Lack of material can change a podcast from Fun to "Feeling like work." That always leads to podfading. Lack of Listeners Never use the word "Only" when describing your download numbers. Last week I had 18 people in a classroom. If I "Only" had 70 downloads, that would be 3.5 classrooms of people. Currently according to Rob Walch the VP of Podcast relations at Libsyn.com the median download of a typical podcast is around 170 (as of May 2014). So 50% of podcasters have over 170, and the other 50% don't. With the right content, you can find yourself in the hundreds of downloads, and eventually the thousand of downloads. It takes time. It takes good content. It also takes you GOING to where your target audience is and networking with them. Lack of Funds Once you have purchased your equipment, the ongoing price of a podcast is around $30 a month (less if your shows are shorter). I've spoken about finding money to podcast in the past. If you want it, you can find it. Some of the things you can do is podcast in mono (it cuts your file size in half - which lowers your media hosting bill). Also if you "take a break" then you can lower your storage space on your media host to the lowest level (just to keep your account active) and then raise it back up when you return. Lack of Fun When you have no time, interest, or money for your podcast it becomes work. When you have to struggle to find content - GOOD content - it becomes a burden. Consistently GOOD Content While I'm not saying its OK to podcast "whenever you want," I would recommend keeping a schedule if you want to be seen as reliable. With this in mind 2 of the top 5 podcasts produce shows on varied lengths on various schedules. What they DO deliver on is great content when they do. These podcasts are the Joe Rogan experience and Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Life Changing Events Lead To Podfading Babies are wonderful bundles of joy, but they take over your life. Their schedule dictates YOUR schedule. When you move to a new location, or get a new job, or grow a spouse, etc. All of these can lead you to shifting your life's priorities. I'm here to say, "It's OK." Ryan Parker of the Food Craftsmen Podcast stated, "Nobody is going to punch you in the face." Would You Punch Fonzie For Jumping the Shark? Unless you're the Simpson's television show, most shows eventually stop production. Growing up I loved Happy Days, Cheers, Friends, Seinfeld, M*A*S*H, Family Ties, and more. They all eventually stopped. Do I hate the actors? No. I would love to shake Henry Winkler's hand. I think he is a phenomenal human being. Consequently, if you're no longer enjoying producing your podcast maybe you should shut it down. Let your audience know you're taking a break. If after the break is over, you still don't want to produce it - record one more episode and explain that you're done. Nobody will punch you in the face. How to Avoid Permanently Podfading? The first question to ask is should you avoid podfading. Ryan Park mentions that we well thought out podcast that has 15 episodes could be planned and produced with that in mind. You could say, "This is episode 1 of 15" and let the audience know that this is intentional. There is no rule that says you have to go on forever. One of the key steps to avoid podfading is to put some thought into it when you start. A properly planned podcast may help you avoid the starting - stopping - starting syndrome. Obsessing on Stats and Your Competition Will Not Create Good Content One of the things that STOP US from making great content is obsessing over stats. If we aren't looking at our download numbers, we are looking at our "Competition" and seeing how many sponsors they have. This (often) makes us envious and frustrated. Ken Blanchard speaks how he was one of the first Gun Shows on the Internet. Others have moved in over time and they have the magic touch and are getting sponsors. This leads many of use to think, "Hey what about me?" I know I think we all fall into this trap from time to time. Get A Large Amount of Episodes Recorded Before You Launch We all know that "Life happens" so if you have a life changing event, its nice to have a stockpile of podcast episodes to feed to your audience. If you don't you can always repurpose older shows that many not be so easy to find on your website, or are available in your feed anymore. Go in With Your Eyes Wide Open - Have Realistic Expectations If we just do the opposite of the above Set aside time Pick a topic we are uber-interested in Something we have a great stream of material We understand that growing an audience takes time. We shouldn't focus on "growing our audience fast" but instead, "What content would touch our audience the deepest?" We need to know that any hobby or small business costs money to maintain. $30 to reach a global audience is the best value on the internet. Lack of funds How to Properly Podfade If you know you are taking a hiatus (permanent or otherwise) it is always wise to keep you audience in the loop. Let them know when to expect you back. In the event you decide to call it quits, thank them for listening, and let them know where to find you. If you might come back, you may want to create a email list to alert people where they can sign up for future updates. Ryan Parker took a three month hiatus. He still created blog posts, and sent out email blasts, and in the end didn't see much of a dip in numbers. He was still communicating with his audience. He was just communicating in a different matter. Remember to lower your media hosting package to save money. You Can Always Come Back Rock bands like KISS, the Eagles, Cher, and others have done a "Last tour ever" tour. This is usually followed by the "We're out of money already" tour about four years later. There is no rule that says you can't come back. Just don't be surprised if you've lost some of your audience (possibly). Looking To Start a Podcast? If you'd like to avoid the headaches of podcasting, joing the School of Podcasting. Edgy Podcast Reviews (a show that reviewed other podcasts) has (more than likely) "Podfaded" (gone of the air). The reason? According to one of the hosts, "It's just not fun anymore." The great thing about podcasting is: 1. You choose to start a podcast. 2. You choose how long the podcast is, how often you [...]

The killer combination of illness (Stu), laziness (Stu) and dialup modem (John) means it's been over a month since a new episode was posted. But that's not to say new episodes haven't been recorded, as this second installment of John and Brandon's Lost pilot commentary amply proves. In your face Gods of Podfading! As before, Brandon is on speakerphone for this episode so his half of the conversation, while generally intelligible, isn't as clear as John's half. John and Brandon had seen the first few episodes of season 3 when this was recorded, but I don't think there are any major spoilers beyond the finale of season 2. [ Leave a comment at the forum ]
