On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who've both been through some tough times and emerged all the better for them: Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan. There was no disguising the fact that Ruston Kelly's third album, last year's The Weakness, was deeply informed by his divorce from singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, with lines like “My marriage ended and I moved up north to mend.” But the album isn't weepy or wallowing; in fact, it's musically the most lively piece of Kelly's catalog so far, sonically bigger and wider than anything he's done before. It's one of those close-one-door-and-other-opens kind of records, at times contemplative—he once cheekily described his music as “self-help rock”—but also not afraid to be playful and catchy. The other half of today's conversation is Kelly's pal Sasha Alex Sloan, whose early career was kind of pop-focused. She had a co-write on a Juice WRLD song and did a huge duet with Sam Hunt that's alluded to in today's chat. But in spite of her pop leanings, Sloan's music always has an undercurrent of self-examination. She left the major label that had released her first two albums recently and fully embraced a more inward-looking style for the new Me Again, which leans toward simplicity more than her past records. It's still catchy as hell, of course, just with a more mature edge. The album also features a duet with Ruston Kelly on the fading-relationship song “Falling Out Of Like.” Check it out. In this candid conversation, Kelly and Sloan talk about the vulnerability of making music—and how Sloan is handling the anxiety of putting out a less pop-oriented set of songs. Kelly talks about the pros and cons of a recent stripped-down tour he did, and they both reflect on the challenges of opening for bigger artists. We also get thoughts on nicotine, Shark Tank, and more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:22 – Start of the chat 6:40 – On parental TMI 13:37 – Sloan's concerns about whether her new record is as commercial as her past work 24:05 – Kelly's recent bare-bones tour, and what he learned 31:50 – "I feel icky talking out financial sh-t as an artist" 41:03 – “There were some 14 year olds there. There are braces happening. I'm up here singing about hardcore drug addiction.” Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ruston Kelly and Sasha Alex Sloan for chatting. Nashville-based singer and songwriter, Sasha Alex Sloan came by to discuss her brand new album “Me Again”. Sasha was born and raised in Boston and discovered a passion for music at a young age, teaching herself piano at just five years old. A born writer, Sasha began to pen original songs at just 10 and went on to hone her craft at Berklee College of Music. While in her first year of college, Sasha had a post go mega-viral on Reddit, reaching the front page within 24 hours. Breaking Reddit's cardinal rule, Sasha took the opportunity to promote her Soundcloud in the post's comments and just two weeks later she received an email from Warner Chappell wanting to sign her. Suddenly, Sasha was moving across the country to begin songwriting for some of the biggest names in pop (i.e. Charli XCX, Camila Cabello, Kygo). It wasn't until Sasha wrote a song she couldn't bear to give away that she debuted as a solo artist in 2017. Since then, Sasha has released three EPs, two studio albums, and has written hundreds of songs for various artists. In 2020, Sasha relocated from LA to Nashville along with her now-husband, producer King Henry, and their dogs. Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Sasha Alex Sloan Sasha Born and raised in the Boston area, writing songs as a teenager and was accepted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, but her schooling was cut short when, at 19, she signed a publishing deal and moved to Los Angeles. Sloan released her first EPs, Sad Girl, Loser, and Self-Portrait in quick succession, followed by her first two albums, Only Child and I Blame the World. Last year, a month after she played Coachella, Sloan announced that she was leaving her major label and going independent, news that would surprise anyone observing her from the outside, thinking she'd really made it. Written and recorded in Nashville, where she now lives with her husband and their many pets, Sloan's third album, Me Again is a self-portrait. Aside from a few collaborative sessions with choice songwriters she trusted, like Joy Williams (the Civil Wars) and Ruston Kelly, Sloan wrote the entire album with her husband, King Henry, picking up a guitar or scribbling down a lyric as they went about their life as a couple. Sloan was determined that the instrumentation not distract from the plainspoken admissions in her lyrics, making the album feel like a conversation between intimates. On this episode, the guys break down what's led to success in Kaprizov's absence, including elevated play from Matt Boldy, depth scoring (especially the 4th line), and Filip Gustavsson returning to form.  Brett also discusses positive regression and whether or not the Wild's 26-goals-in-6-games offensive explosion is sustainable, lucky, or something else. We then moved on to discuss the contract extensions and the reaction from Talbot and his agent before finally discussing a few players the Wild could target when Free Agency opens this week. We wrap up with the meat and potatoes of the show recapping another stellar draft from Judd Brackett and Bill Guerin that included Liam Öhgren, Danila Yurov, Hunter Haight, Rieger Lorenz, Mikey Milne, Ryan Healey, David Spacek, and Servác Petrovský. Today's guest is mixing and recording engineer Pedro Calloni. Pedro has recently done mixes for artists such as Gayle, LANY, Sasha Alex Sloan, Chappell Roan, and Joy Oladokun. As well as worked with some of the top music producers in the industry right now such as Dan Nigro and Finneas. We have a great chat about his quick progression from studio runner to label mixer, learning to read a room, the inefficiencies of the record industry, and why it's more important to aid someone in their musical journey than it is to tell them how it should be done. Travis' Intro: Navigating Social Media In this episode we'll dig in on... How "being a fly on the wall" can go too far How going on tour to play drums led to getting a mixing break Identifying what is happening and what needs to happen in order to take something up a notch The importance of reading a room Working at The Village in Los Angeles The various states that a song might be in when it comes to mix The Mixer's career path vs the Producer's career path Attending Berklee College of Music How management brings legitimacy to a mixer Mixing songs that blew up on TikTok and had to be done immediately Knowing when it's the time to learn new tools and when it's not Not being starstruck Working fast to follow your instinct Learn More About Pedro Calloni... Songwriting has been a part of Sasha Alex Sloan's life for a long time. As a kid she struggled at school, but she would come home and dedicate hours to playing and writing music. Through a series of hilarious events she got a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music and moved from Boston to LA at the age of 19. It took years but the songwriting credits started to mount up. At this point Sasha has written songs with artists like Camila Cabello, Charli XCX, Juice WRLD, LANY, Steve Aoki and many more, all the while focusing on her solo career. We talk about that whole journey in this interview, as well as her latest album, I Blame The World.

This week, Chris sits down in the studio with indie pop singer/songwriter Sasha Alex Sloan. Aside from her wildly successful artist career (she currently clocks in at over 9 million monthly Spotify listeners), she's also written tunes for Carly Pearce, Meghan Trainor, Katy Perry, P!nk, Charli XCX, and many more! If you're not familiar, her music is lyrically poignant, confessional, and emotionally stunning all wrapped up in tight pop production. In this episode, she and Chris talk about imposter syndrome, their respect for pure songwriting + more - including Sasha's upcoming full length record and the first single, “WTF”, which is out now. Plus: Chris admits he loves ABBA and bonds with Sasha over their shared love of Karen Carpenter's voice.
