Ravi Bapna and Anindya Ghose visit Google to discuss their book “Thrive: Maximizing Well-Being in the Age of AI” - the book explores how AI can positively impact many aspects of our daily lives, from health and wellness to work, education, and home life. Artificial intelligence is a powerful general-purpose technology that is reshaping the modern economy, but misperceptions about AI stand in the way of harnessing it for the betterment of humanity. In their book Thrive, Ravi Bapna and Anindya Ghose counter the backlash by showcasing how AI is positively influencing the aspects of our daily lives that we care about most: our health and wellness, relationships, education, the workplace, and domestic life. The authors explain the underlying technology and give people the agency they need to shape the debate around how we should regulate AI to maximize its benefits and minimize its risks. Bringing over two decades of experience with cutting-edge research, consulting, executive coaching, and advising to bear on the subject, Bapna and Ghose demystify the technology of AI itself. They offer a novel “House of AI” framework that encompasses traditional analytics, generative AI, and fair and ethical deployment of AI. Using examples from everyday life, they showcase how the modern AI-powered ecosystem fundamentally improves the emotional, physical, and material well-being of regular people across the globe. The constant emergence of new companies and technologies makes rapid growth in the legal technology sector. Artificial Intelligence-powered technologies play a vital role in that regard. This week's Tech Savvy Lawyer podcast episode features Nicole Clark, the CEO of Trellis.Law. Nicole is the co-founder of Trellis. Nicole specialized in business litigation and labor and employment matters, representing multinational corporations in high-profile trade secret disputes and complex class-action cases. Nicole's idea for Trellis was born late one night as she was trying to write a complicated motion for summary judgment. She didn't know much about the judge assigned to the case, leaving her unsure of how to structure the document. That's when a colleague let her browse through his old case files. While doing so, she stumbled upon a past ruling by her judge, on her issue. Nichole felt like she had a detailed study guide for a final exam. She won her motion for summary judgment, and everything changed. It quickly became obvious to Nicole that there was a massive opportunity to build a thriving, scalable legal analytics platform, one that would help democratize access to state trial court data. And she wanted to be the one to build it. Thus, the creation of Trellis. Join Nicole and me as we talk about the following three questions and more! Aside from Trellis, what are three AI programs attorneys should be using in their work today and why? What are three things, Trellis does better due to its use of AI than its competition? What are three things about AI you think attorneys should be keeping an eye out for in the future? In our conversation, we cover the following: [00.09] Tech setup – Starting the conversation, Nicole shares her current tech setup with us. [09.10] AIs – Nicole shares three major areas in which attorneys should use AI tools and the reasons behind using them. [15.29] Trellis – Nicole shares three things that they do better at Trellis than the other AI competitors out there. [21.22] Federal courts – Nicole mentions structured data as a way of getting information when it comes to federal courts. [23.39] The future – Collecting data, ethics, and data analytics are the three areas attorneys need to keep an eye out for in the future of AI. [27.53] Content creation – Wrapping up the conversation, Nicole shares her idea on AI-generated content creation and its benefits for both lawyers and clients. Today's episode features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Rob Tiffany, Executive Director at the Moab Foundation, and Founder and Managing Director at Digital Insights. A bestselling author and frequent keynote speaker, Rob serves on multiple boards and is routinely ranked as one of the top IoT experts and influencers in the world by Inc Magazine, Onalytica and other outlets. In this episode we delve deep into how Rob went from a life of driving submarines, to being self taught in technology, and eventually becoming a leader in the world of IoT. Rob explains the value of IoT and the best ways to sell and explain it to the average person in real world terms, so they understand how embracing technology can save them time and money. Finally, Rob talks about how edge computing, IoT, and automation can be used to help with sustainability around the globe.---------Key Quotes:“All that R&D and the rise of arm based processors are making things smaller that we would not have ever built. The chips, the sensors, the technology at a low cost - if it wasn't for this mega trend of smartphones forcing us down that path. And so a side effect of all this work, and you know how things like the most expensive version of the thing you make is the first version. And then it gets cheaper and cheaper. Well, IOT, the thing part of it, the device side of it, benefited from the whole planet going all in on smartphones.”“When I talk about IOT and value, I try to stay away from saying AI and things like that. And I say, there is so much value just doing the stupid stuff, the low hanging fruit. I think we oftentimes do our customers a disservice because I hear people say IOT and AI in the same sentence over and over again. And I go, you know what, you really need to get in your car and I need you to drive to Omaha, Nebraska. I need you to drive to St. Louis. I need you to go to Oklahoma City, and I need you to meet real people who are just trying to get their job done. And they have no idea about your neural nets and stuff like that. And they don't understand it. And I think we scare customers. It turns out what my experience, not only at building Azure IT, but even more importantly building Lumata industrial IoT at Hitachi; I'd say that first 10 to 20% of value, whatever that means, saving money, making money that comes from the easy stuff. It really does. Just being connected, just not having to visit simple KPIs, simple thresholding; like stuff that manufacturers have done for a million years. It turns out that's the most of the value.”"So my big recommendation to the world is start to crawl before you run. Do the basics, because it turns out you might get tons of value that you never realized just by doing the easy stuff first. Don't feel pressured to do something you don't even understand."“When you talk about poverty, it turns out most poverty and hunger are related to farming. They are all correlated. Most of the poorest people in the world are in farming, and they're also starving. So when you can start knowing, remotely knowing in real time and doing it low cost out there where it happens, and then combined with automation, what's the action I'm going to take to make this better for someone, right? There's so much you can do. It's mind boggling.”---------Show Timestamps:(01:12) Time in the Navy(03:25) Getting started in technology(04:06) Getting started in Visual Basic(04:29) Getting started in IoT Career(10:17) Defining the Internet of Things(15:77) Connection between IoT and Smartphones(17:33) Power of Wireless and IoT(19:09) Briefing others on IoT while at Microsoft(21:36) IoT and Value (25:05) Edge Computing(33:08) Alternatives to on premise equipment(34:49) Automation strategy (43:49) What makes edge harder than the cloud?(44:31) Edge, IoT, and Sustainability (47:50) Digital Twins--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. Too many young people – particularly young people of color – lack enough familiarity or experience with emerging technologies to recognize how artificial intelligence can impact their lives, in either a harmful or an empowering way. Educator Ora Tanner saw this and rededicated her career toward promoting tech literacy and changing how we understand data sharing and surveillance, as well as teaching how AI can be both a dangerous tool and a powerful one for innovation and activism.By now her curricula have touched more than 30,000 students, many of them in her home state of Florida. Tanner also went to bat against the Florida Schools Safety Portal, a project to amass enormous amounts of data about students in an effort to predict and avert school shootings – and a proposal rife with potential biases and abuses.Tanner speaks with EFF's Cindy Cohn and Jason Kelley on teaching young people about the algorithms that surround them, and how they can make themselves heard to build a fairer, brighter tech future. In this episode you'll learn about:Convincing policymakers that AI and other potentially invasive tech isn't always the answer to solving public safety problems.Bringing diverse new voices into the dialogue about how AI is designed and used.Creating a culture of searching for truth rather than just accepting whatever information is put on your plate.Empowering disadvantaged communities not only through tech literacy but by teaching informed activism as well. This podcast is supported by the Alfred P. This week, Jeremi and Zachary discuss the future and potential of Artificial Intelligence and our Democracy with Aurna Mukherjee. Zachary sets the scene with his poem, Wires in Ancient Walls are like Grape Vines in Cell Towers. Aurna Mukherjee is a sophomore at Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) High School, graduating in 2024. She is part of the Women+ in Computer Science club at the school, and is interested in ethics and Artificial Intelligence.
One of the supposed promises of AI was that it would be able to take the bias out of human decisions, and maybe even lead to more equity in society. But the reality is that the errors of the past are embedded in the data of today, keeping prejudice and discrimination in. Pair that with surveillance capitalism, and what you get are algorithms that impact the way consumers are treated, from how much they pay for things, to what kinds of ads they are shown, to if a bank will even lend them money. But it doesn't have to be that way, because the same techniques that prey on people can lift them up. Vinhcent Le from the Greenlining Institute joins Cindy and Danny to talk about how AI can be used to make things easier for people who need a break. In this episode you'll learn about: Redlining—the pernicious system that denies historically marginalized people access to loans and financial services—and how modern civil rights laws have attempted to ban this practice. How the vast amount of our data collected through modern technology, especially browsing the Web, is often used to target consumers for products, and in effect recreates the illegal practice of redlining. The weaknesses of the consent-based models for safeguarding consumer privacy, which often mean that people are unknowingly waving away their privacy whenever they agree to a website's terms of service. How the United States currently has an insufficient patchwork of state laws that guard different types of data, and how a federal privacy law is needed to set a floor for basic privacy protections. How we might reimagine machine learning as a tool that actively helps us root out and combat bias in consumer-facing financial services and pricing, rather than exacerbating those problems. The importance of transparency in the algorithms that make decisions about our lives. How we might create technology to help consumers better understand the government services available to them.

A computer vision startup claims it has the solution to improving fast-food worker performance. The startup, Agot AI, comes from Pittsburgh and its plan involves the installation of cameras in fast food kitchens. The monitoring can be used to correct mistakes in preparing orders. CEO Evan DeSantola gave the example of an employee who forgets an ingredient. The technology would notice the error and notify the worker before the order is given to a customer. DeSantola believes the technology serves a greater purpose beyond calling out mistakes. For example, the extra monitoring could reward employees for a mistake-free day and determine if a worker is experiencing burnout or requires additional training. As the worker shortage persists, nearly 80% of restaurant operators do not possess enough employees to handle business, according to Business Insider.
The Tech Jawn is a second look at the week's tech news headlines delivered from a different perspective. Hey folks, this is Rudy Fernandez from Creative Outhouse. So how you been?Yeah, me too. But hey, here’s a positive observation about the last two months. Look how fast the world took action. And not just leaders. But all of us. We united and took action together on a dime. Everyone’s behavior changed because it was the right thing to do. That’s just one of the observations from my guest, John J. Wall. He has some great insights into what we’re all experiencing. He also shared some secrets about how to look at all that data you’re collecting. Before we start, I wrote a piece about improving your SEO and here’s the cool thing about it. I’m not an SEO expert. Okay, that’s not a good sell. Okay, here’s what I did. I wrote a piece using the basic rules of SEO that our advisors gave us. And in the process, the blog instructs you on how to write a piece that will improve your SEO, Get it? It’s meta, Whatever. It’s fun and informational. So check it out at CreativeOuthouse.com/blog. Anyway, you’re gonna love this conversation with the super insightful John J. Wall. Welcome to Marketing Upheaval.John J. Wall on Digital MarketingMy guest is John J. Wall. John is a partner at Trust Insights, a marketing analytics and data company that helps marketers collect data and measure their digital marketing. John’s also the co host and producer of Marketing Over Coffee, one of the top marketing podcasts on the planet. John speaks frequently about machine learning and AI. And his podcast has been featured in Forbes API. One day when our podcast goes up, we want it to be just like his. So thanks for joining us, John. Why Words MatterSo I do want to talk about AI. But first I want to talk about a piece you wrote recently, called The Great Shutdown. It’s about the current COVID-19 health crisis. And you brought up this notion that words matter, and pointed out how we need to describe this economic downturn and how we describe it matters. Can you tell me more about that?John:Yeah, sure. And I’m so excited that you brought that up. There were two big things that hit me on that. One is that this downturn that we’re facing right now is really unique. It’s frightening and terrifying because it is an economic hit. And it’s kind of classic recession, and some people talking about depression. But there’s a change in that this is the first one of these that we’re going through that’s not caused by Wall Street shenanigans and greed. The last three or four of these have been the real estate market getting too greedy, the savings and loans not being smart enough to save themselves. It’s all the way back to the depression, which was just, you know, pyramid scheme stocks. This time, we’ve decided that we’re going to try and save lives, and we’re going to shut things down to help people survive and get through this. So that struck me is really unique.Read the rest at: https://creativeouthouse.com/find-the-story-in-data/Support the show (http://www.creativeouthouse.com/our-work)
