Mars by 1965, Saturn by 1970. This was the motto of a group of eminent scientists in the 1950's who had an audacious plan for space travel riding atomic explosions. Physicist Freeman Dyson was part of the team that proposed using newly created nuclear bombs to get to Mars. His son George Dyson is an author and historian of technology who explores the groundbreaking science, political struggles, and moral dilemmas that ultimately sealed the fate of the endeavour in a book called Project Orion: 1957 - 1965.

In this episode of This Week in Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik host Dr. Robert O'Brien, Director of the Universities Space Research Association's Center for Space Nuclear Research, for a fascinating deep dive into nuclear propulsion technology for space exploration. They discuss the history, current developments, and future potential of nuclear electric and nuclear thermal propulsion systems, which could revolutionize our ability to explore Mars and beyond—both robotically and with human crews. Headlines Crew-10 Launch Update: SpaceX's Dragon Endurance prepared to launch relief crew for ISS, addressing delays and setting stage for Williams and Wilmore's return. NASA Layoffs: NASA shuttering several offices including Technology Policy and Strategy, Chief Scientist, and diversity initiatives to comply with Trump administration executive orders. Saturn's Moon Count: 128 additional moons discovered orbiting Saturn, bringing total to 274 (surpassing Jupiter's 95), raising questions about moon classification criteria. Lunar Eclipse: First total lunar eclipse of 2025 visible across western hemisphere, with another eclipse in September for viewers in Asia and Australia. New Space Billionaire: Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, takes over as CEO of Relativity Space (a 3D printing rocket company), joining Bezos, Musk, and Branson in the space industry. Main Topic: Nuclear Propulsion with Dr. Robert O'Brien Propulsion Types: Dr. O'Brien explained two main types: nuclear electric propulsion generates electricity for electric thrusters, while nuclear thermal propulsion heats propellant directly through a fission reactor for thrust. Efficiency Advantages: Nuclear systems offer greater efficiency than chemical rockets, potentially reducing Mars mission mass to one-third or less while enabling "maneuver without regret" capability. Historical Context: US launched SNAP-10A reactor in mid-1960s; Rover-NERVA program demonstrated nuclear thermal rocket technology before cancellation after Apollo. Current Development: Working to regain 1960s capabilities while implementing modern safety protocols, testing procedures, and materials science improvements. Safety Considerations: Modern development includes full exhaust containment and comprehensive safety measures, with waste containment as the primary focus. AI Applications: AI could accelerate development through materials optimization, autonomous operation for deep space, and enhanced reactor control safety. Fusion Propulsion: Remains promising future technology potentially enabling interstellar travel, with growing international investment. Project Orion: Historical nuclear pulse propulsion concept using small nuclear explosions for thrust - impractical for Earth launches but potential for interstellar applications. Public Education: Addressing concerns requires transparent communication, moving away from the "veil of mystery" of earlier nuclear programs. Educational Outreach: The Universities Space Research Association is developing a talent pipeline for "unicorn capabilities" in space nuclear expertise. This week, we're talking to the authors of a new book about spaceflight called "Star Bound: A Beginner's Guide to the American Space Program, from Goddard's Rockets to Goldilocks Planets and Everything in Between," Emily Carney and Bruce McCandless III. Emily started the popular Facebook group Space Hipsters, now 66,000 members strong, and Bruce is a retired lawyer and space enthusiast who also happens to be the son of Bruce McCandless II, the NASA astronaut who flew on the shuttle and pioneered the use of the Manned Maneuvering Unit. We're going to cover a lot of territory in this one, so take your hand off the eject lever and strap in! Get "Star Bound" (Amazon Affiliate): https://amzn.to/4hvHtXo Headlines - Trump's Mars Vision: The administration's push for a crewed Mars mission by 2029 sparks debate. Tariq notes Elon Musk's visible enthusiasm, while Rod highlights the technical and political hurdles. - NASA Leadership Shuffle: Janet Petro named interim NASA administrator, bypassing Jim Free. The move might signal potential shifts in Artemis priorities. - DEI Rollbacks: Executive orders halt NASA's diversity initiatives, sparking workforce concerns. - SpaceX Milestones: 400th Falcon 9 landing celebrated, with 60 Starlink satellites launched in a week. ULA's Vulcan launch remains delayed. - Meteorite Doorbell Footage: A meteorite impact in Canada, captured on camera, stuns scientists and homeowners. - Quirky Moon Naming: IAU dubs a quasi-moon "Cardea" after the Roman goddess of door hinges. Main Topic: Star Bound - Book Overview: A cultural history of the U.S. space program, connecting missions like Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab to societal shifts (e.g., civil rights movements). Authors Emily Carney and Bruce McCandless III emphasized accessibility, avoiding "engineer-speak." - Skylab's Legacy: Emily's passion shines as she details Skylab's role as a bridge between Apollo and the Shuttle, citing the groundbreaking science performed and how it may help us send humans to Mars. - MMU & Bruce McCandless II: Bruce shares stories of his father's iconic untethered flight with the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), suggesting that future missions may revive jetpack tech for tourism and repairs. - Shuttle Era Love/Hate: Both guests defend the Shuttle's cultural impact (e.g., Judy Resnik's inspiring legacy) while acknowledging its flaws. - Conspiracy Corner: The duo laughs over wild theories (STS-1 being flown by clones; Neil Armstrong being a robot) and praises Rod's 2016 book "Amazing Stories of the Space Age" for documenting Project Orion's nuclear explosive propulsion tech. - Future of Space: The book ends at today's "precipice"—Artemis delays, Mars hype, and private ventures. Bruce predicts jetpacks and hotels; Emily urges newcomers to embrace space history's messy, human side. Don't Miss: - Emily's Space Hipsters Facebook group for lively space discussions. - Bruce's website (brucemccandless.com) with book sources and WWII project teasers. The top AI news from the past week, every ThursdAI

Hey everyone, it's Alex (still traveling!), and oh boy, what a week again! Advanced Voice Mode is finally here from OpenAI, Google updated their Gemini models in a huge way and then Meta announced MultiModal LlaMas and on device mini Llamas (and we also got a "better"? multimodal from Allen AI called MOLMO!)From Weights & Biases perspective, our hackathon was a success this weekend, and then I went down to Menlo Park for my first Meta Connect conference, full of news and updates and will do a full recap here as well. ThursdAI - Recaps of the most high signal AI weekly spaces is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Overall another crazy week in AI, and it seems that everyone is trying to rush something out the door before OpenAI Dev Day next week (which I'll cover as well!) Get ready, folks, because Dev Day is going to be epic!TL;DR of all topics covered: * Open Source LLMs * Meta llama 3.2 Multimodal models (11B & 90B) (X, HF, try free)* Meta Llama 3.2 tiny models 1B & 3B parameters (X, Blog, download)* Allen AI releases MOLMO - open SOTA multimodal AI models (X, Blog, HF, Try It)* Big CO LLMs + APIs* OpenAI releases Advanced Voice Mode to all & Mira Murati leaves OpenAI * Google updates Gemini 1.5-Pro-002 and 1.5-Flash-002 (Blog)* This weeks Buzz * Our free course is LIVE - more than 3000 already started learning how to build advanced RAG++* Sponsoring tonights AI Tinkerers in Seattle, if you're in Seattle, come through for my demo* Voice & Audio* Meta also launches voice mode (demo)* Tools & Others* Project ORION - holographic glasses are here! (link)Meta gives us new LLaMas and AI hardwareLLama 3.2 Multimodal 11B and 90BThis was by far the biggest OpenSource release of this week (tho see below, may not be the "best"), as a rumored released finally came out, and Meta has given our Llama eyes! Coming with 2 versions (well 4 if you count the base models which they also released), these new MultiModal LLaMas were trained with an adapter architecture, keeping the underlying text models the same, and placing a vision encoder that was trained and finetuned separately on top. LLama 90B is among the best open-source mutlimodal models available— Meta team at launchThese new vision adapters were trained on a massive 6 Billion images, including synthetic data generation by 405B for questions/captions, and finetuned with a subset of 600M high quality image pairs. Unlike the rest of their models, the Meta team did NOT claim SOTA on these models, and the benchmarks are very good but not the best we've seen (Qwen 2 VL from a couple of weeks ago, and MOLMO from today beat it on several benchmarks) With text-only inputs, the Llama 3.2 Vision models are functionally the same as the Llama 3.1 Text models; this allows the Llama 3.2 Vision models to be a drop-in replacement for Llama 3.1 8B/70B with added image understanding capabilities.Seems like these models don't support multi image or video as well (unlike Pixtral for example) nor tool use with images. Meta will also release these models on meta.ai and every other platform, and they cited a crazy 500 million monthly active users of their AI services across all their apps

Bill Cooper let the world know in his legendary book “Behold A Pale Horse” that the government has a program in place to weaponize mental illness in a way that causes people to shoot up schools and public places in an effort to cause changes in attitudes in order to change gun laws. The recent shootings appear to be part of a much larger agenda of gun control disguised as protecting the most vulnerable, but the cracks in the official stories were obvious from the very start. We've seen this show before and recognize the signs of manipulation from the police, government, and their partners in the Mainstream Media. Will the public finally wake up to what the Deep State is doing to them, or will people go back to sleep and continue to believe that all of these events are just random coincidences? Everything Everywhere Daily History Podcast

In the years immediately following the end of the Second World War, several of the scientists who took part in the Manhattan Project had an explosive idea.  They wondered if we could harness the incredible power of atomic bombs and put them to use for peaceful purposes.  In particular, what if we could use atomic bombs to literally blast ships into space?  This idea went far further than you probably think it did. Learn more about Project Orion and the quite serious idea of blasting ships into space on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. Sponsors Newspapers.com Newspapers.com is like a time machine. Marty and Holly sit down with Canadian science fiction superstar Robert J. Sawyer to talk about his book The Oppenheimer Alternative.  Robert tells us how he spun the mistaken prediction of the sun's temperature by Hans Bethe (in 1939) into a science fiction tale where the great physicists of the 20th century save humanity from being vaporized by a solar instability.  We discuss Bethe and Einstein's Nobel Prizes, Oppenheimer's prediction of black holes, and the history of the Manhattan Project.  We talk about the ethics and politics of dropping the first two nuclear bombs on Japan, the creation of doomsday weapons, and their impact on space travel in Project Orion.  Robert's Webpage: https://www.sfwriter.com/  Email us: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comBuzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463

Weeeeee're baaaack! Miss us? A very happy 2023 to you Summerupperers, we hope you all had a fabulous break and respite from reading ALL the climate and energy papers. And as we kick things off in the new year, the landscape is serene and quiet, not a climate paper or consultation in sight… *jokes* *trigger warning*Before diving into our double header, we note some early success for Tennant's weird-and-until-recently-rather-obscure obsession with CBAMs because, in their Safeguard mechanism design paper, the Government committed to a review of policy options to further address carbon leakage - including an Australian CBAM! Tennant is just a bit excited. Given he wrote the paper on implications of CBAMs for Australia (hell he even made a cake out of it and talked to Luke on his other podcast about it) we felt it only appropriate to give a hat tip to Tennant's role in stimulating local CBAM curiosity - bravo Mr Reed!Of the ELEVENTY BILLION consultations and reviews running at the moment your intrepid hosts simply cannot choose just one! This episode is a double header doozy delight where we unpack the findings of Professor Ian Chubb's review of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and then dive into the proposed design of the Safeguard Mechanism in the Government's reform paper and THEN talk about the implications of one for the other, and vice versa. Incidentally, the Safeguard design paper is out for consultation. If that tickles your fancy, you can have your say on the design here until February 24.Frankie's One More Thing is a report on the latest frontier of the American culture wars, this time featuring gas cooktops! Following comments by a US Consumer Product Safety Commission on the hidden hazards (increased child asthma anyone?) posed by gas cooktops and the suggestion that unsafe products could be banned, the right fringe of the Republican party lost their collective minds and set about to protect ‘God. Guns. GAS STOVES'. Yikes. Here's hoping we can have a more sensible debate at home.Tennant's One More Thing is suitably on brand for both nerdery and obscurity. A book called ‘Ignition!: An informal history of liquid rocket propellants' by John D. Clark. From red fuming nitric acid to the latest liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen rockets, this book has you covered. The bonus climate-related spoiler is that liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen rocketry will be a source of greenhouse gases. A Project Orion breadcrumb followed by tangent on why we don't just build a bunch of nuclear power stations and shoot the waste into space (Luke has you covered with this educational video) and we are in danger of never finishing the pod.Luke's One More Thing thanks Twitter user @rockwallby for proposing the people's choice for the inaugural Papie awards, the ‘Wonkys' (an extra special thanks from Frankie) and also reflects on how our podcast of record for climate and energy in Australia has eschewed the lamestream media's focus on climate papers! Carbon Brief's analysis of the climate papers most featured in the media in 2022 revealed your intrepid hosts covered but one of their top 10. We've decided we like our hipster climate paper niche and are less ‘Quelle catastrophe!' and more ‘Can we fix it, yes we can!'.And that's all from us this week Summerupperers! We shall see you next time and until then, please keep tweeting your thoughts to us at @LukeMenzel, @TennantReed and @FrankieMuskovic and if you would like to weave some golden threads through our back catalogue, give us your feelpinions or suggest papers to read we are always here for that - hit us up at mailbag@letmesumup.net.

There are a surprising number of upcoming CD Projekt Red games in development right now. The studio is best known for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, and a recent investor call revealed that CDPR is massively broadening its horizons. There's a new trilogy of Witcher games in production, which starts with The Witcher Polaris – aka The Witcher 4. There's a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel coming codenamed Project Orion, but not before the release of a massive expansion of the increasingly popular original – Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. And if that weren't enough, the upcoming CDPR games now include a brand new project and support for two additional games in The Witcher universe. The company is expanding to make good on its ambitions, with CD Projekt Red Boston being founded as part of a new North American development expansion, which will work separately from The Molasses Flood – who is working with CDPR on The Witcher Sirius. There's a lot going on at CDPR, so keep reading for details on all of the upcoming CD Projekt Red games that are in production right now. source: Upcoming CD Projekt Red games: From Cyberpunk 2077 Orion to a new Witcher trilogy | GamesRadar+ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

CD Projekt Dropped some HUGE news confirming they are working on a brand new IP, an entire second Witcher trilogy, two other Witcher projects being developed by other studios, and even a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 as well called Project Orion. Sean and Marc discuss their thoughts on this bold initiative by the company to just announce it all at once and if this will lead to redemption for the studio. Sony and Microsoft's battle over the Activision-Blizzard-King deal continues with each side having its final meetings and say before the CMA goes into investigation mode. Microsoft even made an entire site dedicated to the deal. Could this actually help them get the deal passed? Or are the constant complaints from Sony going to halt it? Also, Sony drew the ire of social media with rumored plans to Remaster or possibly even Remake Horizon Zero Dawn to make it more in line with its sequel Horizon Forbidden West so that it creates more hype around the game when the Netflix series launches. Sean and Marc discuss if there's a legit reason for this to even be made, and why are so many are upset with it happening. Plus, things aren't going great for the Overwatch 2 launch, even more, TV shows and Movie news from The Medium, The Mario movie, and possibly even From Software IP too? Tencent wants to fully acquire studios instead of investing, and Fandom acquires a whole slew of gaming sites from Red Ventures too. Cyberpunk Orion will likely not be the name of the game, but currently, that is the project or codename for it. Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt. The story takes place in Night City, an open world set in the Cyberpunk universe. “Research is stopped on a system of space propulsion which broke all the rules of the political game”.

Dr. Hassan Tetteh is a decorated Navy captain and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, and adjunct faculty at Howard University College of Medicine. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, he was deployed in Afghanistan and on warships in the Persian Gulf. He's also an unabashed medical “nerd,” part of a cadre of physicians board-certified in clinical informatics. Dr. Tetteh is the founder and principal of Tetteh Consulting Group, creator of The Art of Human Care book series, and a best-selling author of several books. He is board certified in thoracic surgery, general surgery, clinical informatics, and healthcare management and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association. In a recent piece in the Wall Street Journal, it was noted that he has one of the coolest-sounding jobs in medicine – “Warfighter Health Mission Chief for the Department of Defense Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (or Jake).” Dr. Tetteh told us about the Center and his work there. We then start a dive into big data, Project Orion, and the JAIC's suicide-prevention initiative and the idea of psychological autopsy and digital phenotyping. This is a wonderful conversation about not only living one's life in full, but also the promise of technological innovation to help others do likewise.

Welcome to episode #775 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #775 - Host: Mitch Joel. Here is one of the more fascinating humans that you can connect with. George Dyson fancies himself as someone who makes boats, but he is also a technologist, historian, and one of the true polymaths in our world today. Dyson is the son of the theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson and mathematician Verena Huber-Dyson, the brother of technology analyst Esther Dyson, and the grandson of the British composer Sir George Dyson. Dyson's early life is described in Kenneth Brower's book The Starship and the Canoe. When he was sixteen he went to live in British Columbia to pursue his interest in kayaking. From 1972 to 1975, he lived in a treehouse that he built from salvaged materials on the shore of Burrard Inlet. Dyson became a Canadian citizen and spent 20 years in British Columbia, designing kayaks, researching historic voyages and native peoples, and exploring the Inside Passage. He nows lives in Washington state where he makes kayaks and writes about history, science and technology. His books are Baidarka, Project Orion, Turing's Cathedral, and his latest: Analogia - The Entangled Destinies of Nature, Human Beings and Machines. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 55:12. Andy and Dave discuss the Digital Modernization Strategy that the US Department of Defense released on 12 July 2019. Todd Austin at the University of Michigan presents research at a conference on Morpheus, a project to create a chip that randomizes elements of its code, in an attempt to slow would-be hackers. Also in chip-related news, Intel introduces Pohoiki Beach, a new 8 million-neuron neuromorphic system with 64 Loihi research chips, with expectations that they will produce a system capable of simulation 100 million neurons by the end of 2019. Baylor College of Medicine in collaboration with the University of California and Second Sight Medical Products announce Project Orion, an implant that transmits video images directly to the visual cortex, bypassing the eye and optic nerve.  And the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command and PEO C4I announce the AI Applications to Autonomous Cybersecurity (AI ATAC), a contest for using AI/ML to bolster network security operations. Research from University of Wisconsin, Madison, demonstrates that optical waves passing through a nanophotonic medium can perform artificial neural computing – here, that a sheet of glass can identify numbers by “looking,” or in this case, by making use of bubbles and other impurities in the glass to function as a neural processor.  Research from Stanford creates a convolutional neural network that can play Go without game tree search, more mimicking a human-level understanding and approach. Since the dawn of the space age, the governments and militaries of the world have prepared for war in outer space: from the early days of the Cold War to America's Air Force in the 21st century... from anti-satellite weapons to Soviet military space stations. One military space vehicle was even designed that could carry human beings to the stars... or annihilate the entire human race. In this episode, we had a lot of time on our hand after being marooned on another planet, so we watched the 2015 science fiction/comedy The Martian. How dangerous are plutonium fueled Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators? Does cosmic radiation doom Matt Damon life on Mars? Why does every Mars movie need an impossible sandstorm? Tim and special guest host Gabe answer these questions and more. We also hear from Chris Mariasola who breaks down the maritime/space law in the movie for us. This is the fourth in our Mini-Nuke episode series, where we find movies that do not have enough nuclear nonsense for a full-sized episode but nonetheless demand over thinking.
