A more humane education feels very necessary right now. Our planet and its inhabitants all over the world seem to be crying out for it.  Humane Educators Zoe Weil and Rae Sikora created IHE In 1996 to do precisely this. And so it is a huge pleasure this week to be able to welcome Zoe, and her colleague Julie Meltzer, from the Institute onto the podcast. Zoe Weil is the co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE) and is considered a pioneer in the comprehensive humane education movement. Zoe created IHE's M.Ed., M.A., and graduate certificate programs, as well as IHE's Solutionary Framework, which guides teachers in bringing solutionary thinking and action to their students.  Zoe is the author of eight books including Amazon #1 New Release in Social Philosophy and Popular Applied Psychology, The Solutionary Way: Transform Your Life, Your Community, and the World for the Better with a Foreword by Jane Goodall (2024), Amazon #1 Best Seller in the Philosophy and Social Aspects of Education, The World Becomes What We Teach: Educating a Generation of Solutionaries (2021/2016), Nautilus Silver Medal winner, Most Good, Least Harm: A Simple Principle for a Better World and Meaningful Life (2009), The Power and Promise of Humane Education (2004), and Above All, Be Kind: Raising a Humane Child in Challenging Times (2003). She has also written books for young people, including Moonbeam Gold Medal winner, Claude and Medea: The Hellburn Dogs (2023/2007), about 12-year-old activists inspired by their teacher to right wrongs where they find them, and So, You Love Animals: An Action-Packed, Fun-Filled Book to Help Kids Help Animals (1994). Julie Meltzer, Ph.D., is a self-described “pragmatic visionary” who is committed to creating schools that truly help students prepare to successfully meet their futures. She is a tireless advocate for literacy, justice and equity which she sees as integrally related. Julie supports teachers and administrators to develop collective efficacy to teach their students how to become changemakers. She agrees with Zoe Weil that our best hope for the planet is to educate a generation of solutionaries. After extensive experience in education including as a teacher, teacher education faculty member, district administrator, consultant, researcher, program evaluator, and project lead, to her current role as Director of K-12 and Teacher Education for IHE. Julie is also a published author, sought-after speaker and editor/reviewer. When not focused on teaching and learning, Julie enjoys hiking, dancing, writing poetry, reading international women's and children's literature, traveling, and working for social and environmental justice. In this episode, we chat with Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education, about her pioneering work in the area of comprehensive humane education, an approach to teaching that draws the intimate links between human rights, animal protection, and environmental sustainability. We take a dive into Zoe's latest book The Solutionary Way, which explores how to use a solutionary lens to bridge divides and address the seemingly intractable challenges we face. Highlights include: Zoe's personal journey of co-founding the Institute for Humane Education in 1996, and the many programs and resources offered through the Institute; The description of a “solutionary” as someone who transforms unjust, unsustainable, and inhumane systems for the most good and least harm, and how one can cultivate a solutionary mindset; How to use a humane education lens to understand the connections between overpopulation, lack of reproductive autonomy, animal exploitation, and ecological degradation; Zoe's reflections on societal double standards around reproductive choices - how not having children is stigmatized while having children is the unquestioned default; The purpose and joy of living in alignment with our values while simultaneously working in community towards system change. The biggest challenge for educators is that we need to acknowledge multiple ways of learning, and we need to lean into a new way of teaching that focuses on high level thinking and strategic thinking. That is Zoe and Steve's mission. In today's episode, we have Zoe Weil and Steve Cochrane of the Institute of Humane Education to show us how they are helping students find joy and purpose. They look at problems in a different way—by being “solutionaries” that identify unjust and unsustainable systems. They will talk about how school curricula should not be boxed in facts and memorization, but also should provide experiences that allow children to develop their unique selves. With that, let's jump right in and see how to educate the humane way! [00:09 - 10:22] Opening Segment I introduce Zoe and Steve to the show Zoey's 2011 Ted talk, "Creating Solutionaries" What is a “solutionary”? Someone who can identify unjust and unsustainable systems [10:23 - 28:09] The Solutionary Steve talks about how and why he collaborated with Zoe Deepening the curriculum through solutionaries Focusing on the systemic connections Developing ethical analysis for children Zoe talks about her book, “The World Becomes what we Teach” [28:10 - 42:57] Graduating Happy Children through Critical Thinking There is a place on the internet created to bring out our best impulses and our collective genius. We offer the vegan community a pathway for integrating all of the issues of social justice and environmentalism, with their passion for veganism and animal rights. And what we're offering the education community is the opportunity to bring these important ethical issues into their classroom in ways that don't have to be polarized, that don't have to be controversial, but can actually be oriented toward how we solve these underlying problems that we face in the world. Our goal is to educate people to be solutionary. That is people who can address unjust and unsustainable and inhumane systems and devise and implement solutions that are good for everybody, meaning all people, animals, and the environment.

I'm a storyteller and solutionary at heart, and am currently completing editing of a documentary series I've filmed over the past two years, about the emergence of new, groundbreaking ecological and social-purpose platforms to support a rising tide of those I call "Solutionaries" in this world. This is a crucial time in human history, and it's time for us to stand up for the healing of our planet, and find innovative ways to scale solutions, and provide platforms that truly support those driven to serve humanity and the natural world. This is what guides me into my current chapter of life, leaping from a decade and a half in for-profit technology leadership positions. My past 2.5 years were immersed in the enterprise distributed-cloud computing and storage space in Canada, and just recently returned to my hometown, Seattle Washington as the COVID pandemic began.Prior to that, I spent 5 years developing an XR/AR platform, architecting pipelines to produce photoreal 3D models for product visualization and invented/patented several core technologies in the space.I have a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, and thrive in building innovation-empowerment culture. I've built exceptional teams several times in my career and grown a magical, high-performance culture each time.Launching an augmented reality startup in 2013, I dove deep into a range of connected technologies. I love to get hands on, diving into new tools and technologies frequently that intrigue me.The heart-centered innovation, technology and artist communities around the world are my tribe. I love nothing more than weaving innovative souls living to evolve the world, and steward humanity toward a regenerative future. I believe in corporate social responsibility, democratization and dissolution of gatekeeping, circular economy, decentralization, empowering transparency through technology, innovating and empowering endeavours that positively impact the world. Please reach out if you are called. I love connecting with others that share this priority foremost - Jedi's wielding The Force, in business and social-purpose innovation. As ethics in technology, AI, IoT, blockchain, AR, new paradigms for financing innovation, and digital transformation in every field makes massive strides, and conscious living becomes mainstream, it's an exciting moment in history. I feel honored every day to be alive right now, and play a part in opening up a complete revolution in the way we experience and evolve solutions within our world. You can find more information on Darrick at:https://www.facebook.com/darrickmorrisonhttps://www.youtube.com/user/RadRickTheCosmonauThttps://linktr.ee/Lionijah
