Expect details on how to join the call by Friday.About This EpisodeWe live in a time defined by the agency of what author, critic, and teacher Howard Rheingold famously described as “tools for thought” — media that expand our minds and enhance our ability to learn and collaborate, both for good and ill. But just because we're on the Web doesn't make us “net smart”, another term from Rheingold's extensive catalogue of pithy idioms. As anyone with a pocket supercomputer can attest, having information on tap doesn't necessarily result in better attention management, boost our critical thinking, or confer a greater capacity to engage in prosocial collective action…but we can choose to allocate ourselves to developing the skills we need to thrive on this electronic frontier. And who better to help us than Rheingold himself, a legendary figure whose reporting and counsel from the frothy edge can teach us all great volumes about how to deepen our humanity in technologically-augmented worlds.Disclaimer: the audio and video on Howard's end of the recording drifted unevenly and sometimes minutes away from each other…and while I put in several extra days of effort to repair it all, you will notice moments where they don't line up. We need to talk. Whenever a conversation starts with that sentence, you know it's going to be uncomfortable. But you need to hear this and I need to say it. I say it with love and kindness, but it's going to be real, honest, and direct. Blunt, even. Voice actors, I talk to dozens of you every week. I ask you straight up what's holding you back in your voice over career. Here are the Top 5 most common answers I get: Procrastination. Time management. Shiny object syndrome. Perfectionism. Distraction. Sense a theme?  Takeaways: Procrastination, time management, shiny object syndrome, perfectionism, and distraction are common challenges faced by voice actors. Effective time and attention management are crucial for success in the voice acting industry. Voice actors need to take control of their lives, make disciplined choices, and eliminate excuses. A Note from James:Cal Newport has written such great books about how to be more productive, more creative, the titles of the books speak for themselves: 'So Good They Can't Ignore You', 'Deep Work', and this latest one is called 'Slow Productivity'. It's about how you ultimately succeed in getting more productive by going slower and sometimes doing nothing. Cal tells us how and why and we always have an interesting conversation. So here is Cal Newport!Episode Description:This episode explores the nuanced concept of 'Slow Productivity,' as championed by Cal Newport, across an engaging dialogue that sheds light on achieving more by intentionally slowing down. Newport, making his fifth appearance on the podcast, underscores the counterintuitive productivity philosophy through his journey, inspirations from his books like 'Digital Minimalism,' and the pivotal role of mindful work habits. Referencing historical and contemporary figures like Benjamin Franklin and John Grisham, Newport articulates the significance of deliberate practice, the fallacy of equating busyness with productivity, and the benefits of focused work. Additionally, the interview captures a personal milestone of applying for full professorship, emphasizing the importance of scholarly impact and steady progress. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, historical wisdom, and critique of modern work culture's inefficiencies, the discussion advocates for a transformative approach to work and creativity that values depth, reflection, and the strategic delegation of tasks.Episode Summary:00:00 Introduction to Cal Newport and His Work02:30 Cal's Journey as an Author and His Writing Process04:09 The Importance of Stories Over Studies in Books07:42 The Role of Workload in Productivity14:22 The Impact of Technology on Productivity14:52 The Shift to Remote and Hybrid Work20:30 The Importance of Structuring Your Day25:28 The Balance Between Hustle and Slow Productivity30:59 The Misconceptions of Young People About Work31:06 Balancing Grad School and Writing Books31:13 The Importance of Time Management32:03 The Reality of Workload and Social Interactions32:37 The Mythology of Speed in Work34:36 The Paradox of the Relaxed Rhodes Scholar35:12 The Role of Time in Productivity36:40 The Importance of Quality Over Quantity38:26 The Impact of Pseudo Productivity54:11 The Role of AI in Writing and Academia01:00:03 The Journey to Tenure and Beyond ------------What do YOU think of the show? Celine Takatsuno is our most recent addition to the PrivacyCloud team. We have asked her to help us understand the current status of the various business models falling under the umbrella of a set of principles that the MyData Global organization has come to embody: human-centric control of personal data, individual empowerment, transparency, interoperability, etc.  More specifically, we have gone through the same list I had put together in a 2019 article, “MyData Business Models”: Privacy Enhancement Tools, User Rights Management platforms, Self-Sovereign Identity tools, Personal Data Stores, Brand Relationship Management tools, Declared Data Platforms, Attention Management and survey-based market research tools, and Personal Data Marketplaces.  About M Celine Takatsuno Celine's been working in data, technology, and privacy spaces for more than a decade. Before joining us at PrivacyCloud, she was working on a couple of personal data projects, one in healthcare and one in e-commerce. She's founded three startups, consulted with a dozen more in media, marketing, and 'tech for good', and early on, led business and strategy teams for industry pioneers like Commission Junction.
