Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball

The Texas Longhorns have been one of the hottest teams on the recruiting trail this year and it continues with Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns landing their 19th commitment in the 2023 class with talented cornerback out of South Oak Cliff, Malik Muhammad. Malik has won a championship on every level of football he has played at, little league, middle school, high school, and he hopes to continue that trend at the University of Texas. We knew that the addition of Arch Manning would bring a lot of really talented players with him to the University of Texas, mostly on the offensive side of the ball. But if Texas wants to compete for a Big 12 championship, and ultimately for SEC championships and national titles, they need to add talented defensive players like Malik Muhammad to their roster as well. Malik Muhammad currently is ranked as the 43rd recruit in the country, five spots below talented receiver and Texas commit Johntay Cook. As John Garcia from Sports Illustrated explains in the video, he is one of the most complete defensive backs in the nation. His ability to play in man coverage, zone coverage, and make plays on the ball will pay dividends for this defense for years to come. This is one of the best players in the nation at a premium position and an outstanding recruiting win for Steve Sarkisian and the University of Texas as they continue their quest to locking up a likely top 3 class and potentially the #1 recruiting class in the nation. SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and David Moore hash out the Cowboys' potential playoff seedings [2:20] and what a No. 1 or 2 seed could mean for their Super Bowl chances. Evan wonders if any unit is playing as well as the Cowboys' defense [7:04]. David says the Cowboys have flipped the script this season [14:43], but Dak Prescott still needs to figure out a way to beat what defenses have done to adjust to his strengths. Evan gives a shoutout to South Oak Cliff [22:25], which won Dallas ISD's first state football title in 63 years. Kevin and Evan note that this is what happens when you afford inner-city schools some of the same opportunities routinely given suburban schools. And Kevin notes the retirement of Todd Dodge [28:21], the former Southlake Carroll coach, who retired after winning his third straight state title at Austin Westlake and seventh overall.

Becky Hennesy's podcast has been hijacked! In this episode, prior guest and good friend Jamie Lyn Wallnau bursts into the Reformers Collective Podcast studio and takes over the host duties. She turns Becky into a guest on her show as they review the highlights from the first ever Reformers Collective Conference held back in October 2021 at Trinity Church in Cedar Hill, Texas.Aside from the conference, Becky gives an update to some amazing changes happening in the South Oak Cliff school system and how local reformers recently fought for massive physical upgrades to the tune of $70-million dollars. According to what Becky has learned from school officials, it's made a tremendous difference in the atmosphere and attitudes of both teachers and students. (Side note: could there be a correlation between this local transformation and the fact that South Oak Cliff's football team just advanced to the state title football game in 5A Division II?)They also discuss the small ways that anyone can begin the process of reformation in their own communities. Did you know that even serving as a substitute teacher can be a seed of reformation where you live? What about serving the homeless? Or being a foster parent for a few months? Or prayer walks/runs around your local schools and city government buildings?Check out Jamie Lyn's own podcast!Set Apart Women Podcast (hosted by Jamie Lyn Wallnau)Let's keep bringing godly solutions to earthly problems! The Reformers Collective podcast is part of the expanding Charisma Podcast Network (CPN).  Click here to visit the CPN main page. On this episode, the guys are joined by Taylor Toynes, the co-founder and executive director of For Oak Cliff (which he started with students as a first-year teacher). Discouraged by the disparities and inequities his students experienced, and noting that nothing had changed since his childhood, Taylor was compelled to organize the inaugural FOC Back to School Festival for his students and community. The festival drew attention to the needs of the community and led to collaborations with system leaders such as United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Taylor is committed to the Oak Cliff community and lives in the neighborhood with his family. For his leadership, Taylor has received awards from the United Nations, the NAACP, and Southern Methodist University (SMU), to name a few. Taylor and the FOC team won Teach For America’s Social Innovation Award and Echoing Green Fellowship. For Oak Cliff has been recognized by national news outlets and gained the trust of their most proximal neighbors in South Oak Cliff. Taylor is the proud father of Wednesday Toynes and husband of Ariel Toynes. Taylor is a graduate of University of North Texas and has a master’s degree from SMU. Eric Cooper moved to San Antonio in 2001 to take over the San Antonio Food Bank and get it on the right path. In his time at the SA Food Bank, the non-profit has raise a lot of money, added many programs, and has made it their mission to provide food for today, food for tomorrow and food for a lifetime. Eric Cooper is heartwarming, loving, and genuinely cares about his mission and the San Antonio Food Bank's success. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenido, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour, discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right. Welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Eric Cooper. Eric is the executive director of the San Antonio Food Bank and currently serving in somewhat of a role as a little bit of a national spokesperson for food and security as a result of the crisis and as a result of some press that San Antonio got. He joined the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001 and has since taken it from really being on somewhat of a tenuous footing to really a robust, important, and surprisingly, oddly, well-funded nonprofit in the city. I was doing some research on you. Before this crisis, 58,000 people a week got help. 77 million meals a year, to me, kind of a nerd about things. 2% overhead for y'alls budget. That's something that unless people really pay attention, you don't realize how important that is and how really a compliment to your management skills. Thank you for being here. I want to get into some of these things, but thank you for being here. I can't imagine your time commitment, so I'm glad we got a little bit of it. Eric Cooper: Hey, super excited to be on the show. It's a great city and we're just so privileged to be a part of it. Justin: I think that's a great city. That's why I started this whole thing. You and I were sort of joking how you got these San Antonio stories. I moved here and I've met a weird, fascinating array of characters and I was hoping to share that through this show. We haven't met before, but you're in such a big spotlight right now. I knew about the San Antonio Food Bank. I've learned so much more about it, so I want to talk to you about it. First, I'm going to put you through sort of our top 10 list we go through to get some color commentary on who you are as a person. I've read a bunch of your interviews before you got here today. I want to-- Eric: Sorry about that. [chuckles] Justin: Well, a lot of it, I don't want to retrace steps. Some of it, I want to get some new information. When and why did you move to San Antonio? Eric: Well, I've been in food banking for about eight years. I actually got my start in Salt Lake City at the Utah Food Bank and then made my way back home to North Texas. I grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There was an opportunity to serve with the North Texas Food Bank which, at that time, they had their facility in South Oak Cliff. I was there a couple of years and had watched as the San Antonio Food Bank somewhat struggled. We went through about four CEOs in a two-year period. Two of them had gotten fired and the other two had quit. The board was struggling. The food bank was struggling. I figured I couldn't screw it up any worse and they offered me the job at that point. I became their youngest executive director. I love an opportunity and I just saw such an opportunity to serve people in need. I knew I was going to dedicate my life towards putting food on the table for families. As I had traveled South Texas and seeing some of our border communities, it's some of the most extreme poverty in the United States. I knew I wanted to serve an area that had that need. When the opportunity arose, the board...
