Under this agreement, the city of Waleska will limit annexations within a specified area, and the county will not oppose annexations within that area. While parcels within the growth boundary are not automatically eligible for annexation, they must still meet state law requirements. The growth boundary encompasses areas along Reinhardt College Parkway, Land Road, and Fincher Road. Both entities have also approved a memorandum of understanding outlining protocols for the growth boundary agreement, aligning character areas and land use plans within the designated area.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break: ESOG – DAYCO – HELLER LAW   STORY 4: Waleska Voters Say 'Yes' to Sunday Alcohol Sales Waleska voters approved two ballot referendums on Sunday alcohol sales, both passing with 70.37% support from the 27 people who voted, constituting 13.99% of the city's 193 registered voters. The first allows licensed businesses in Waleska to serve malt beverages, wine, and distilled spirits on Sundays between 12:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. The second permits package sales of these beverages during the same hours on Sundays. Before businesses can implement Sunday alcohol sales, city leaders must update the municipal code of ordinances to align with the referendums' passage.   STORY 5: Holly Springs Leaders Considering Raises for City Employees The Holly Springs City Council is considering a 4.5% salary increase for all city employees, incorporating a 2% base salary raise and a 2.5% step increase. The proposed raises, totaling $95,000, are part of an annual market adjustment recommended by Condrey and Associates, Inc., the firm that updated the city's Employee Classification and Compensation Plan last year. The council is set to vote on the raises on November 20, and if approved, they would take effect on January 1, 2024.     Commercial: CHEROKEE CHAMBER - ELON – INGLES 3     STORY 6: Cherokee County Leaders Table Decision on Outdoor Storage Expansion The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has once again postponed a decision on the request by Cumming Highway Storage to modify zoning conditions for expanding its storage business on Highway 20. The commissioners unanimously voted to table the decision until the November 21 meeting, as the attorney representing the applicant was unable to attend the recent meeting. The property in question, rezoned in 2019, is seeking to eliminate certain conditions to permit outdoor storage, revise the site plan, and add more storage space for boats and RVs. The commissioners had previously deferred a decision in October after residents expressed concerns about light pollution and other issues.   STORY 7: Woodstock Student Receives Optometry Scholarship Shelby Geiger, a first-year student pursuing a Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis and hailing from Woodstock, received the SCO Alumni Endowed Scholarship award, amounting to an annual scholarship of $3,000 throughout her four-year doctorate program. The scholarship is awarded to an optometry student with at least a 3.0 GPA during their undergraduate studies or a minimum score of 320 on the Optometry Admission Test. Geiger, a graduate of Sequoyah High School and the University of Georgia, is the daughter of David and Angie Geiger.     We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Henssler 60    SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for listening to today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger podcast. . College football is a massive enterprise in the United States, and southern teams dominate poll rankings and sports headlines while generating billions in revenue for public schools and private companies. Southern football fans worship their teams, often rearranging their personal lives in order to accommodate season schedules. Andrew McIlwaine Bell's book The Origins of Southern College Football: How an Ivy League Game Became a Dixie Tradition (LSU Press, 2020) sheds new light on the South's obsession with football and explores the sport's beginnings below the Mason-Dixon Line in the decades after the Civil War. Military defeat followed by a long period of cultural unrest compelled many southerners to look to northern ideas and customs for guidance in rebuilding their beleaguered society. Ivy League universities, considered bastions of enlightenment and symbols of the modernizing spirit of the age, provided a particular source of inspiration for southerners in the form of organized or “scientific” football that featured standardized rules and scoring. Transported to the South by men educated at northern universities, scientific football reinforced cultural values that had existed in the region for centuries, among them a tolerance for violence, respect for martial displays, and support for traditional gender roles. The game also held the promise of a “New South” that its supporters hoped would transform the region into an industrial powerhouse. Students and townspeople alike embraced the new sport, which served as a source of pride for a region that lagged woefully behind its northern counterpart in terms of social equity and economic prowess. The Origins of Southern College Football (LSU Press, 2020) is an entertaining history of the South's most popular sport cast against a broader narrative of the United States during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, two momentous periods of change that gave rise to the game we recognize today. Our guest today is Dr. Adam Ramsey who is the owner of Socialite Vision in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We talked about prioritizing your time both in and out of the practice, finding the next right associate in private practice, common misconceptions optometry students have, and more! About Dr. Ramsey:  Born and raised on the island of Trinidad & Tobago, Dr. Ramsey dreamed of becoming a doctor and helping people. Setting his sights on becoming an optometrist, he graduated from the University of Florida and went on to Southern College of Optometry (SCO) where he obtained his Doctorate of Optometry. While practicing Optometry at several retailers, Dr. Ramsey had a vision of opening his own store where eyeglasses & sunglasses were selected based on style and craftmanship rather than industry favorites. The result: Socialite Vision. Eye Care With Style. When it comes to improving his practice, Adam Ramsey, OD, looks to set trends instead of following them, and he does so by looking outside of eye care for inspiration. Because at Socialite Vision in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl., going above and beyond for patients is at the core of the experience—and exceeding expectations is the standard. Every patient visit is carefully curated to the wants and needs of the individual; no two patients receive the same exam or same product offerings. Over the past few years, Dr. Ramsey has made it his mission to help with the issue of diversity and inclusion in the eye care space. In 2019, he co-founded Black Eyecare Perspective, a nonprofit organization designed to cultivate lifelong relationships between African Americans and the eye care industry. In May 2022, Dr. Ramsey was awarded the New England College of Optometry Presidential Medal for his work through Black Eyecare Perspective. [1:03:28] What you should be doing to differentiate yourself. About Dr. David Grosswald: Dr. David Grosswald is a third generation native of Atlanta, Georgia. He studied premedical sciences at the University of Georgia from 1984 to 1988. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physiologic Optics in 1990 and earned his Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in 1992. Upon graduation, he was employed with a private practice and, ultimately, opened his own practice as a Pearle Vision franchisee in 1998. His franchise practice grew to three locations throughout east Georgia with eventual consolidation in 2014 to single private practice now known as The Eye Center of Conyers, Georgia. In 2018, he partnered with Total Eyecare Partners with the goal of achieving industry-leading, medically-oriented optometric care assisted by their collaborative, group resources. In the early, developing years of his Conyers, Georgia practice, he had a special interest in better serving patients with the latest diagnostic and practice management technologies. Utilizing these technologies has been a progressive process with the goal of providing more efficient care while assuring a more impressionable experience for the patient. His success in this daily endeavor has been reflective in the tremendous growth and productivity of his practice. Through the application of these technologies, niche specialties beyond the conventional optometric realm were realized. As a result, Dr. Grosswald developed extensive experience in providing specialty contact lens services with orthokeratology and scleral lens designs. His lens designs are primarily achieved via Wave Custom design software. This permits infinitely adjustable fitting and optical parameters necessary for achieving success with challenging cases. Dr. Grosswald is recognized among the Wave contact lens community as an “opinion leader” and pioneer of lens design concepts. He is a frequent lecturer with the Vision by Design educational symposiums on topics such as Wave custom GP designs and practice management concepts. With the chronicity of many ocular pathologies and the frequent futility of conventional treatment methods, determining and treating the underlying systemic causes has been Dr. Grosswald's recent passion. He has become a voracious scholar of functional or integrative medicine and how it applies to managing conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and other commonly seen ocular conditions resulting from chronic systemic inflammation, vascular insufficiency and immune compromise or excitation. In essence, the goal is to utilize integrative technologies to aid the body's own ability to make new, energized cells and, thus, heal itself. This goal is assisted by in-office use of photobiomodulation, pulsed electromagnetic therapy, transdermal ozone therapy, and epigenetic analysis. Important Links: Check out Dr. Grosswald's website! This success took more and more time away from what really mattered in his life. More patients led to more staff, more equipment and more hours at the office. Not being able to do it all, Mike's practice began to suffer until he realized that he didn't know how to lead a team.  He studied leadership strategies from some of the most successful businesses in the service industry and successfully implemented them into his own practice. He learned the importance of systems, communication and teamwork to reach goals that he could never attain alone. He now shares those experiences with doctors and their teams and has a unique ability to ask the right questions, to keep digging until he finds your individual "why". And it's different for everyone and most often it involves many aspects outside of the practice. Mike Rothschild graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis and was honored as an Outstanding Clinician. He lectures internationally on topics of practice management, leadership, contact lenses and ocular disease. He practices in Carrollton, GA and married to Christy. They have two children.

He has developed models of innovation in the delivery of developmental, binocular and Neuro-Optometric vision rehabilitative care. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Fortenbacher is an adjunct faculty at Southern College of Optometry, where he is the program supervisor for the W.O.W Vision Therapy developmental vision and rehabilitation private practice residency. In this episode, Dr. Fortenbacher and I discuss how to detect vision problems in children (even if they have 20/20 vision) and when parents should prompt their doctor for further testing. Dr. Fortenbacher highlights the most common vision problems, how often they are overlooked by routine eye check-ups and their effects on academic success. Visual issues such as convergence insufficiency, developmental dyslexia, amblyopia or lazy-eye, strabismus or crossed-eye can be effectively treated and eradicated with proper visual therapy techniques. Learn more about Dr. Fortenbacher here.   How Vision Problems Can Easily Go Undetected Vision goes beyond being able to see clearly Having 20/20 vision does not mean that your eyes are working together When your eyes aren't working together there are a variety of possible outcomes Difficulty in sustained attention Unwantingly divided words or overlapping words when reading Clarity at near may be blurry or with overlapping images/words All of these outcomes can affect a child's performance, attention, and reading fluency Oftentimes if the parent does not specifically question their doctor about the child having a vision problem that affects reading, the proper testing can easily get overlooked   The Complexity of the Visual System BOTH eyes have to: Team, Track, and Focus.   The child then has to visually process and make sense of what they are seeing This is integral for optimal performance, reading, and attention skills in and outside of the classroom Integration - ties in all visual function motor skills with balance, listening, and thinking ALL of the above are developmental processes that are to occur naturally but many children struggle and experience delays   Emotional Consequences of Visual Conditions When the child is trying to apply themselves and they are unable to perform correctly, frustration ensues Children become overwhelmed when dealing with a vision issue and at times it can appear as a behavioral challenge They may have an attitude that shows they are unwilling and uninterested in trying   Common Visual Conditions Convergence Insufficiency - the inability to converge the eyes Occurs in 8-12% of the pediatric population The top binocular visual eye condition It can be effectively treated with vision therapy ‘Developmental Dyslexia' - JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) coined this term when researching the frequency of visual conditions such as convergence insufficiency and  oculomotor dysfunction A significant amount children with developmental dyslexia have binocular, accommodative and oculomotor dysfunction There are treatments to help these conditions Motion Sickness - vision therapy can help resolve this issue fairly quickly   Signs That Indicate A Possible Vision Condition Is your child struggling in reading and learning? Does your child resist or have difficulty with their homework? Do they avoid or dislike reading? General coordination difficulty? Have their vision evaluated beyond the routine eye health check An evaluation of binocular vision, tracking, focusing and visual processing   Assessment and Treatment Process First assessment includes testing: binocular vision, tracking, and focusing. If determined that there is a reason for concern, the child will need to return for further evaluation of their visual perceptual abilities where extensive testing is done on the following: Testing perception to visual memory and visual directionality to measure reversals Hand-eye coordination Reading tests to evaluate whether the struggle is a reading disability or a reading fluency issue Visually directed gross motor skills, vision imbalance, and visuall directed fine motor skills Diagnosis - much like rehabilitation in occupational therapy or speech-language therapy, vision therapy is therapeutic Fun activities with visual challenges are guided by a therapist once or twice a week Progress is measured and can take around 3-4 months to remediate the issue Patients with more complex issues, with autism or who have crossed eyes, lazy eyes, will take longer but can be treated effectively Vision therapy can also be applied to adults - age is not a barrier   Where to learn more about Dr. Fortenbacher Website: wowvision.net Twitter: @wowvision Facebook Wow Vision Therapy Youtube    Connect with Dr. Nicole Beurkens on... His residency training in pediatric vision development and vision rehabilitation was completed in Seattle, WA through Pacific University. Dr. Dufour’s behavioral approach focuses on visual function in the context of other sensory and motor systems. Outside of clinic Dr. Dufour spends his time at Beaver Lake and enjoying good food, art, and music. Dr. Dufour had many interest growing up, but he finally settled on optometry. “I was very uncertain of what career path I wanted to pursue. I considered working in architecture, marketing, philosophy, and graphic design. Eventually I decided on optometry for its personal interaction and community service,” said Dr. Dufour.   Interacting with kids is a pleasure for Dr. Dufour. “Some might say I’m a kid at heart. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids in my church youth group and as a summer camp counselor, so it seemed pretty natural to direct my career toward pediatrics. In the summer of 2013 I began working in a vision therapy clinic and immediately developed a passion for this population. In the case of vision development and pediatrics, I was moved by the influence vision therapy had on my young patients struggling with academics. In working with adults with acquired brain injuries, I gained an appreciation for the debilitating potential of functional vision loss and the joy of helping people return to independence and a normal daily life. In both cases I find that it is in vision therapy and rehabilitation that I am best able to impact the lives of my patients; and as such, I strive to continually improve my care so to provide the best quality of life for my patients.”   The best is yet to come…. according to Dr. Dufour. “While the field of vision therapy has achieved much in the way of clinical and academic research, there is a vast amount still unknown in the neurophysiology of many common visual disorders. I believe that the most effective treatments for strabismus, amblyopia, and post-traumatic vision syndrome are yet to come, and they are to be found through continued study and research of the neuro-visual system. My hope is to participate in the advancement of the profession through contributing to this research.”   Dr. Dufour is at our Centerton location Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
