In a world of quiet quitting and the ‘Great Resignation', what should employers be doing to keep their best people?  This week Mark chats to Steve Jacobs, a director at WTW, to discuss the importance of employee benefits and how to navigate the ever-changing trends in the workplace.  With the shift in employee expectations post COVID-19, and a focus on flexibility and work-life balance, they look at the differences between employer and employee perspectives on what constitutes a ‘benefit' now and, in particular, what employees sometimes value above money. They discuss diversity and inclusion, global differences in legislation and the challenge of the multi-gen workforce.  With a background in the Merchant Navy, and now working for WTW, a world leader in data driven, insight-led solutions in the areas of people, risk and capital – Steve has seen it all, and his business has helped businesses to navigate stormy, unpredictable waters.  GET IN TOUCH! Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

It was fantastic to catch up with Steve Jacobs, a retired Senior Lecturer in Media, Religion and Culture at the University of Wolverhampton, for my latest Nostalgia Interview. Steve and I were at Lampeter together from 1991-4 where we both received the same degree classification, and Steve recalls the way in which we received our results. Steve worked in Religious Studies at Wolverhampton initially on a fixed term contract at a time when the subject was not well supported. We learn how he made the shift to Media, and his motivations for doing it, and how doing Chris Arthur's Religion and the Media course at Lampeter helped him secure the job. He speaks about the importance of Chris Arthur, my own PhD supervisor, who let Steve into the department at Lampeter back in 1991. We learn about Steve's doctorate in Hindu Reform Movements which he sees now as a training ground – a process rather than a definitive product. Steve reflects on how so much of process has been lost in Higher Education today, and we ruminate on what has changed in thirty years. Steve talks about his background in catering and the Centre for Alternative Technology in Macynlleth where, prior to going to university, he ran their vegetarian kitchen. It was an educational centre whose objective was to promote sustainable living and Steve lived on site. Recently, Steve wrote a monograph on sustainable living at this Centre. Steve discusses the choices he has made, and the importance of the concept of sharing – both in academia and in working in kitchens, and we learn about his move to ethnography. Steve relates his experience of going to India, via Athens, in which he was able to study the practice and philosophy of yoga. He talks about the places that have really felt like home and about how home is a fluid construct. Then, at the end of the interview, Steve relates how he has been able, by and large, to do the things he has wanted, and how growing up it was much more possible to live in the moment than is the case today. We talk about how student experiences can be different today, and Steve remembers the aerograms he used to send from India which his father kept.

Jacobs continues to state that as "Roe stood for the proposition that states could not restrict abortion access before viability," and the Texas law is restricting abortion at the detection of a heartbeat, Roe is now void.

El álbum incluía tres canciones escritas por el ex guitarrista Robb Flynn ("Chalice Of Blood", "Forbidden Evil" y "As Good As Dead").

God's Not Dead! And Neither is Les! Feldick Lives! Bob Enyart apologizes and reports that rumors of Les Feldick's passing were greatly exaggerated. Bob concludes Monday's discussion titled Ginsburg, Barrett, & Billy Graham all meet the DOCTA. BEL reports on the news, history, science, economics, etc. from a Christian worldview and to constantly reinforce how to apply biblical principles. That's what Jesus did as you'll recall from the Gospels, and at kgov.com/tower-falls and from our program The Hudson River Landing was not a Miracle. Today, Bob gives a quick review of the D in DOCTA, and then goes through the rest of the letters as they stand for the themes highlighted on this program and at Denver Bible Church. And from that context, Bob begins with only a brief comment about last night's debate, stating that if someone had brought up The Lincoln Proposal it would have been thrilling. But, as it stands, it was not. (Bob is thankful that Dr. Steve Jacobs at Illinois Right to Life is promoting a fabulous idea that the personhood / abortion abolition movements should consider, urging President Trump to issue an executive order instructing that all agencies of the executive branch recognize and uphold the right to life of the unborn child. As a caveat, the first three paragraphs of the current draft letter to Donald Trump terribly, in fact, grotesquely, exaggerates his protection of the unborn child. But praying that the mere implementation of the proposal can be fixed, the goal itself is solid and does not violate the biblical principles enunciated at AmericanRTL.org/regulations, AmericanRTL.org/exceptions, nor AmericanRTL.org/good-vs-bad-abortion-incrementalism. It’s hard to overestimate the role of Raphael Lemkin in calling the world’s attention to the crime of genocide.  But for decades his name languished, as scholars and the broader public devoted their time and attention to other people and other things. In the past few years, this has changed.  We now have a greater understanding of Lemkin’s role in pushing the UN to write and pass the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.  Moreover, researchers have a newfound appreciation for the depth and insights of his research.  Genocide scholars talk about their field experiencing a ‘return to Lemkin’ It seems an appropriate time, then, to reexamine Lemkin’s ideas and career. We’re doing so in a special, two-part series of interviews with scholars who have edited and published Lemkin’s writings.  Earlier this month, I posted an interview with Steve Jacobs, who carefully edited and annotated an edition of Lemkin’s writings about the history and nature of genocide, simply titled Lemkin on Genocide. This time, I talked with Donna-Lee Frieze, who has meticulously edited Lemkin’s unpublished autobiography Totally Unofficial: The Autobiography of Raphael Lemkin (Yale University Press, 2013).  The book gives us a new appreciation for Lemkin’s work.  It offers us a deeper insight into who he was and how he fit into his times.  And it shows how his experiences shaped his lifelong crusade to create an framework within international law that would protect persecuted ethnic and religious groups. One brief note about the sound.  We taped this interview in what was late winter in Wichita.  Bizarrely enough, New York that day was evidently much warmer than Wichita.  Donna accordingly taped this interview sitting next to an open window.  Occasionally, you can hear the passing traffic in the background.  If you’re not in New York, consider this local color.  If you are, feel free to brag that spring comes early in your town.  You don’t get that chance often.
