EPISODE 117 | Stay Awake – The Wokeness Issue In a classic example of the weird mirror world days we are currently moving through, a term used by Black people to mean one thing has been turned by opportunists into something totally different. So, let's look at the origin of the term "woke", how it's been used, African-American Vernacular English (AAVE), the Black Lives Matter movement, Defund the Police, and the appropriating of the word by those who see more personal profit in keeping us all divided. But that's apparently resolved and the issue should be ready for the November ballot; And we tag along with a Juneteenth observance that turned out to be a real learning experience.
Today we discuss an appellate court ruling that found Florida's "Stop WOKE Act" to be unconstitutional. Then we hear an update about the continuing fraud trial of two former JEA executives.

But when such history is uncomfortable, inconvenient or controversial, some groups seek to erase it. That's particularly true of black history today. One example is the state of Florida's STOP WOKE law that limits students and teachers from learning about issues related to race and gender. Such efforts are spreading beyond Florida. In this episode of Challenge 2.0, we speak with two black educators about the histories white nationalists seek to silence.

Scoot runs down from fresh audio from Florida, where Governor DeSantis is on the defense after his STOP WOKE act turned out to mean that students are getting a chance to learn that slavery maybe wasn't so bad
The Florida African American History Task Force has been taken over by DeSantis loyalists and they have made big changes to the curricula for teaching of Black history in K-12 education since the "Stop Woke" and anti-DEI laws were passed.
Things are getting very dark in Florida, and educators at all levels have found themselves on the frontlines of a reactionary political crusade led by Republican governor Ron DeSantis. "As the new semester began," Florida-based journalist Michael Sainato recently reported, "teachers throughout Florida were faced with new state laws strictly limiting curricula—prompting schools to remove droves of books from their classrooms and libraries for fear of being in violation of the draconian but opaque new laws. An already-chilling reality gripping the third most populous state is getting even chillier in the wake of controversial legislation such as the “Don't Say Gay” bill and the Stop Woke Act, which both went into effect in July 2022." What is it like teaching in DeSantis's Florida today? For those who haven't already fled the state or left the profession altogether, what do these sweeping, draconian policy changes translate to on the day-to-day level for educators, and how can we stand in solidarity with them? Retired Florida professor Marvin Dunn has been dismayed at recent efforts to battle so-called critical race theory and limit the way educators can talk about race. Last year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the Stop WOKE Act, which mandated that public schools teach race in a manner where students would not “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part.”Like many educators, Dr. Dunn feared this would create an environment where teaching hard truths about history is discouraged. He decided to start the Teach the Truth tour. This week, Trymaine Lee hops on the tour bus with Into America to speak with Dr. Dunn and students about what's at stake when it comes to learning the truth about American history. They visit historic sites related to the Ocoee Massacre, the lynching of Willie James Howard, and the Black town of Rosewood, which was destroyed a hundred years ago by a white mob.Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? Beat the censors, sign-up for our newsletter: https://firstfreedoms.ca/call_to_action_pages/stay_informed/ The Bencher Election campaign for the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) is now under way and it is a doozy! The stakes could not be higher for the over 55,000 Ontario lawyers. In 2019 an uprising occurred among the Ontario lawyers that saw a slate of 22 benchers elected with the aim of stoping the LSO's policy of imposing a "Statement of Principles" upon the legal profession. This policy would have required lawyers to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practice. Opposition quickly arose because of its attack on free speech. Not only were lawyers expected to carryout the policy, but they had to believe in it. One lawyer noted, "While the LSO has the mandate to regulate lawyers, it has no mandate to regulate t Lawyers play an essential role in our society; that role, however, does not include becoming state agents that parrot state-sponsored speech." 22 of the STOPSOP were elected as benchers in 2019 and eventually the SOP was stopped as promised. The benchers are up for election again in 2023 and this time there are two opposing camps - one called the "FULLSTOP" slate of 35 lawyers seeking to become "Benchers"; the other group is called the "Good Governance Coalition" slate of 45 lawyers. The choice could not be starker. The FullStop group wants to "Stop Bloat" - reducing the LSO budget, annual fees, and bureaucratic interference in the practice of law; "Stop Creep" - restore the LSO to its core mandate of regulating competence and integrity; "Stop Woke" - Remove social engineering, group identity politics, and "woke" ideological agendas from the LSO. The Good Governance Coalition - wants to "return competent, representative leadership" to the LSO. In other words, it wants to get back to the agenda of the pre-2019 program that caused the FullStop group to come into existence. Barry chats with law professor Bruce Pardy, who is the executive director of Rights Probe - www.rightsprobe.org. Prof. Pardy shares with Barry concerns he raised in a recent article stating - "It threatens not just lawyers but professionals of all kinds, as well as every Canadian who might someday need their services: embrace our politics or risk losing your licence." For years, many on the right have been lambasting a certain kind of progressive sensibility denoted with the term “political correctness”—endless fodder for Rush Limbaugh and others in the nineteen-nineties. But those semi-comic tirades were nothing compared with the serious political fight against “woke.” Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, for example, recently signed a so-called Stop Woke Act into law, and made the issue the center of his midterm victory speech. In Washington, there has been talk in the House of forming an “anti-woke caucus.” “I think ‘woke' is a very interesting term right now, because I think it's an unusable word—although it is used all the time—because it doesn't actually mean anything,” the linguist and lexicographer Tony Thorne, the author of “Dictionary of Contemporary Slang,” tells David Remnick. “The references to ‘woke' before 2016, 2017, 2018, were kind of straightforward. It means ‘socially aware,' ‘empathetic,' ” Thorne says. “Then the right, the conservative right, seizes hold of this word,” to heap blame on it for everything from deadly mass shootings to lower military recruitment.

Gov. DeSantis announced a new "Stop Woke" policy to bar investments of State funds in companies or funds that adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Florida will no longer consider using issues like climate change or racial justice awareness to influence investments by rating a company's values. Adam Hattersley, candidate for Florida Chief Financial Officer, and State Rep. Andrew Learned discussed this new policy and Florida's refusal to divest from Russian investments, and how this may impact Florida's finances and pensioners' retirements.
Local businesses have sued to have DeSantis' "Stop Woke" law declared unconstitutional under the First Amendment because it purports to censor what their private businesses can say to their employees, especially in diversity, equity & inclusion training. They claim that it is unconstitutional for a government to insist that they can't talk to their employees about race or gender issues as they see fit.
We discuss what the Stop Woke Act means for schools, businesses, and the future of workplace training. We also address the tricks played by Musk, Gates, and DeSantis.

In this episode of In The Breakroom With Bill, host Bill Grob is joined by Dee Anna Hays to discuss Florida's House Bill 7, which, among other things, would prohibit employers from requiring that employees complete training or instruction “that espouses, promotes, advances, inculcates, or compels such individual to believe” specific claims constitute discrimination. Our speakers explain the details of the bill, in addition to the open questions presented by the statute, and how Florida employers might need to alter their training programs to bring them into compliance with the proposed law.
Sine Die has come and gone. The 2022 Legislative Session is finally over, with a couple of days' extension. Gov. Ron DeSantis says it was “the year of the parent” in the Legislature, with the passage of “Stop Woke” and the so-called “Don't Say Gay” bills. Also, on today's Sunrise: — Redistricting maps have been drawn and approved, but they still aren't on the Governor's desk and he's still hinting at a veto. — As the Session ends, there's already talk about a Special Session to focus on the unaddressed problem of homeowners insurance. — The Democrats had a pretty soul-baring Session. They say it upped their visibility.
A tougher immigration law has passed the Florida House and is going to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk. He's sure to sign it. It was kind of his idea. Also on today's Sunrise: — Debate over the Immigration law was a battle of fact versus fiction, with Democrats saying Republican arguments about immigrants were short on facts. — The Senate is getting into the so-called “Stop Woke” bill, with Democrats trying to make sure its origins are clear. It's Donald Trump. — And, Rep. Bryan Ávila says his goodbyes … and clue us in on his “Moose” nickname.
The “Stop Woke” bill is on its way to Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Senate approved the measure, but not before hearing so ‘uncomfortable' debate about the bill banning ‘uncomfortable' history conversations in schools. Also, on today's Sunrise: — Senators also passed legislation that gives anyone the right to challenge books and teaching materials. Democrats say it will lead to book banning. — Florida's so-called “Don't Say Gay” bill has stirred the wrath of the king of reality TV, Andy Cohen. — And, as regular as the bi-yearly time change, Marco Rubio is once-again calling for an end to time changing.

Highlights: “The legislation is technically called the Stop Wrongs Against Our Kids and Employees and it's a fascinating piece of legislation. What it will do is it will allow parents to file lawsuits against school districts they suspect of teaching critical race theory and recover attorney fees if and they prevail.”“It addresses directly a horrific development in our classrooms, and that's the deliberate attempt by leftwing ideologues disguised as teachers to blatantly indoctrinate our kids in radical Marxism.”“Governor Ron DeSantis is to be absolutely applauded and I hope this ban on CRT extends into state colleges and universities as well. If it doesn't belong in classrooms or in the board room of any business operating in Florida, it sure as hell doesn't belong in the lecture halls of tax-payer-funded universities!”“Everywhere we look a massive backlash against CRT is crushing the left and restoring faith, family, and freedom to our classrooms. Ron DeSantis is part of a growing movement to take back our country, and it appears that that movement, has only just begun.”Timestamps: [02:20] Governor Ron DeSantis' new Stop Woke Act and how it's similar to the Texas Abortion Law [05:05] How this legislation promises to eradicate CRT from Florida[07:20] On a massive backlash against CRT that's sweeping the nationResources: CLICK HERE to JOIN our Turley Talks Christmas Party Live Stream Monday night Dec 20th at 7 PM EST for the most patriotic Christmas EVER! https://bfcm.turleytalks.com/super-bundlesIt's time to CHANGE AMERICA and Here's YOUR OPPORTUNITY To Do Just That! https://change.turleytalks.comPatriotSwitch.comGet your own MyPillow here.
