How does the Florida Wildlife Corridor help provide resilience to climate change?Florida is ground-zero for climate change impacts as our natural and human communities grapple with increasing heat, flooding, sea level rise, and wildfire risk. In today's episode, we talk with Joshua Daskin, the Director of Conservation at Archbold Biological Station, about a recent assessment with Florida Atlantic University that identified the overlaps between land conservation in the Florida Wildlife Corridor and the resilience of the state's nature and people to advancing climate change. Archbold's conservation program uses the report's results to credibly motivate the Corridor's protection. At Archbold, Josh works to expand the use of science in conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. He leads Archbold's conservation strategy, connecting researchers with agencies, landowners, NGOs, and science collaborators to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of conservation actions from Archbold's own 20,000 acres to the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor and beyond. Since 2021, he has been a leader of the scientific arm of the campaign to conserve the Corridor.Josh earned a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Studies from Brandeis University, a M.Sc. in Zoology while a Fulbright Scholar at James Cook University in Australia, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. Previously, Josh researched the impacts of war on African wildlife and helped reestablish scientific capacity in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique following the country's civil conflict. He was also a Donnelley Postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, a biologist in the US Fish and Wildlife Service headquarters office, and a research assistant at Archbold.Articles and links mentioned in the episode:Climate and Wildlife Corridors overview page: https://www.archbold-station.org/projects/climate-and-wildlife-corridors/The Florida Wildlife Corridor and Climate Change Full Report: https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/ClimateReport_FINAL_04152024-1.pdfPlanning Future Landscapes report: https://www.archbold-station.org/projects/cfrpc/Florida Wildlife Corridor Planning and Development Data (database of current building permit requests): https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/FLWC%20Statewide%20Study%20-%20Summary%20Report%20(2023-10-23).pdfThe full interactive ‘Bear Necessities' Story Map of M34, the Black Bear that inspired the FWC: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0cdea7371c874357a9307ac8ea701568FWC and Climate Change Water Report Executive Summary: https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/Climate%20Report%20-%20Executive%20Summary%20FINAL-2.pdfSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/florida-uncut/donations

The Great Product Owner: Key concepts to train Product Owners on, lessons for Scrum Masters In this segment, Rayyan talks about how Product Owners (POs) need to learn how to form Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and how he trained other POs in his team to create as-is and to-be customer journeys. By using product goals, empathy maps, and customer journeys, they were able to identify dysfunctions in their teams. Rayyan also mentions the Double Diamond method and how it helped them succeed. He also references the Team of Teams McChrystal as a resource for further learning. The Bad Product Owner: The Challenges of Being a PO Without Proper Training and Support In this segment, Rayyan talks about a common problem where a business analyst is suddenly made a Product Owner (PO) without any training or change in position. This leads to a lack of understanding of the backlog, customers, and detailed work required. Rayyan suggests that the system is responsible for such problems and offers tips to tackle them. He advises to drop everything and work with the new PO only, and suggests avoiding anti-patterns such as vague backlog items, bullet points, and lack of measurement of item value. He also recommends being ready for such situations and providing support at the right time. In this segment we refer to the Coach Your PO e-Course module that covers how to onboard a new PO.   [IMAGE HERE] Are you having trouble helping the team work well with their Product Owner? The Great Product Owner: The Visionary PO that was able to help the team own their Backlog Great PO's are often visionary. They have an idea of what they want to deliver and focus on conveying that to the team. They set the context for the Vision, and work from that Vision to explain the direction to the Scrum team. They don't necessarily spend much time working on the backlog, because the teams are able to translate the Vision into the detailed stories to implement. Great PO's focus on “what problem we should solve in the next iteration”! In this segment, we talk about the Product Vision Canvas, and the Story Map tool. The Bad Product Owner: The Requirements Manager This particular PO acted like a requirements manager, focusing on collecting requirements from stakeholders, and doing whatever the customer had explained they wanted. However, for teams to be able to succeed, the PO role needs to be much more than a mere requirements collector and manager. In this segment, we discuss the role of Vision and the PO's responsibility to go beyond merely writing down requirements.    [IMAGE HERE] Are you having trouble helping the team work well with their Product Owner? 'I think art needs to get on the street, because raising awareness in a gallery is really speaking to the choir. I'll leave raising awareness, because we both agree that the time for that has passed, but I think art needs to revert back to artisan and crafts, in the sense that imagination can lead to crafting things that we will actually need for survival. I think that - and again, this is my radical rant - I think that one of the reasons why we're seeing these unprecedented amounts of anxiety and even this new term 'climate anxiety' that we have, which is almost probably about to be defined as a kind of mental health condition, is because we are so profoundly disconnected from our own means of existence.'Dr. Milena Droumeva, November 3, 2021, VancouverMy conversation with acoustic ecology colleague Dr. Milena Droumeva on November 3, 2021 in Vancouver about multiple points of ‘listening', thoughts about radicality, that imagination can lead to crafting things that we will actually need for survival and how to address profound disconnections.  Note: There is a slight flame rumble in the background but the voice is clear :-)  Milena Droumeva is an Associate Professor and Glenfraser Endowed Professor in Sound Studies at Simon Fraser University specializing in mobile media, sound studies, gender, and sensory ethnography. The poet Marjan Naderi reads her work “The Lessons My Mother Taught Me While Preparing Dinner.” Guest Kerry Ward of the Veterans History Project introduces VHP and discusses VHP’s November, 2019, Occupational Poetry Panel, which brought together four Veteran poets to perform their work. Meezie Hermansen performs her work “Tools of the Trade.” Stephen Winick and John Fenn discuss a poem in the American Folklife Center’s archive called “Colorado Morton’s Last Ride.” It’s a ten-minute narrative poem recited by a man named Fred Soule at the Farm Security Administration (FSA) camp in Visalia, California on September 2, 1941. The poem was recorded on an instantaneous disc by Charles Todd and Robert Sonkin, two fieldworkers collecting folksongs for the Library of Congress. Winick discusses the research that led him to discover that the poem, whose original title was “Colorado Morton’s Ride,” was written by Pulitzer-Prize-winner Leonard Bacon and Montana cowboy Rivers Browne. He also reveals the identity of Soule, a public information officer for the FSA. We hear Soule read an excerpt of the poem, and Winick and Fenn promise to release the full poem as a bonus episode.

Great Product Owners can engage the team, help them focus on the goals. But the PO’s role is not only about communicating, it is about creating a sense of a shared future. In this segment, we talk about how clear goals can help the team and the PO feel they are part of the team, and collaborate effectively. The Bad Product Owner: The great dictator Product Owners may try to dictate the focus and tasks to the team. When that happens, the team and PO start drifting apart. As Scrum Masters we must be aware of “how close” PO and team are so that we can tackle the distancing between them, and bring them together with techniques like shared goals, better Story writing techniques (e.g. Story Map), and other approaches.   [IMAGE HERE]Are you having trouble helping the team working well with their Product Owner? We’ve put together a course to help you work on the collaboration team-product owner. Today our expert guest is Kingsley Grant, a motivational speaker, corporate trainer, licensed marriage and family therapist, career transition coach, online radio podcaster, and sherpa. He is also the President of Helping Families Improve, Inc., a company driven to improve communication within relationships, and the author of The Midlife Launch.   Kingsley is a self-described late bloomer, as he hints at in the title of his book. He came to the U.S. from Jamaica when he was young and, for many years, had little guidance – and he feels that the years he spent trying to fit in cost him dearly, financially and otherwise.   Eventually, Kingsley learned from his mistakes and wanted to make a change, but he had a lot of ground to cover after all of those “wasted years.” One of the biggest shifts he experienced, and most valuable lessons he learned, was the lesson of forgiveness. He didn't want to travel through life carrying his pain anymore.   This experience led to writing the book 2 Steps To ForGIFTness: Learning How To Forgive When Your Mind Says Yes But Your Heart Says No.   Helping Others Follow Their Dreams & Be S.M.O.O.T.H.   Another challenge pushed Kingsley to make another major change. In 2008, shortly after quitting the job he had worked for 20 years, Kingsley had a heart attack and, ultimately, a quadruple bypass surgery.   Kingsley has learned not to let these challenging experiences hold him back – and he uses these experiences to inspire and encourage others in their life's journey.   Kingsley's passion is driven by a simple belief: “You have a life experience. You have learned something along the way ... You have something that somebody is waiting for, and only you can deliver that.”   He helps people understand this using the S.M.O.O.T.H. Framework:   Script the right Story Map the Mission Obstacles to Overcome (real or perceived) Open the Options Trim the Time Hole-in-one (i.e. cut out all of the unnecessary strokes)   Everyone has the potential to change the world, one dream at a time and one person at a time. “If I'm doing what I'm called to do and you're doing what you're called to do, collectively we can make a difference.”   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “Pursue your dream. Don't let the graveyard become richer because your dream was not lived out. Don't live your life holding back that which is within you. The world is holding its breath waiting for you to bring your dream to it. Let's go do it today!” --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Episode 16 - Walk this wall   Understanding the larger picture of your product and how your users will accomplish their goals is often difficult to pull together. A great technique is to use a Story Map to visualize, explore, and communicate the context around your application. Product Owners can socialize and collaborate with the team and stakeholders with the Story Map so everyone can have the same picture.  Cory and Kim talk about some the other benefits, the fun around creating one, and why it’s a great starting point before deep story writing begins.   Feedback: twitter - @deliveritcast email - deliveritcast@gmail.com   Links: Jason Fried https://medium.com/@jasonfried/give-it-five-minutes-b8115d6f2361?utm_content=bufferfb8e8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer David Hussman https://vimeo.com/70214001 Jeff Patton Interview http://theagilerevolution.com/2015/09/15/episode-95-user-story-mapping-something-something-with-jeff-patton/ User Story Mapping - Book http://www.amazon.com/User-Story-Mapping-Building-Products/dp/1491904909/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1402052861&sr=8-1&keywords=jeff+patton
