In this episode of Logistics with Purpose, powered by Supply Chain Now, Enrique Alvarez and Kristi Porter welcome Laura Cyrus with Truckers Against Trafficking to the podcast. Laura candidly takes us through her exciting and very meaningful life story as she goes from musical theater and drum line teacher; to studying criminal justice, working at a clinical psychologist practice, co-founding an organization around optimism and realizing her true calling is fighting sex trafficking by joining Truckers Against Trafficking. Truckers Against Trafficking believes that prostitution is inherently exploitative, and when an individual is prostituted through force, fraud, coercion, poverty, abuse at earlier stages of life, and/or lack of viable options, they should not be punished for being exploited. Truckers Against Trafficking believes education and awareness about the realities of prostitution, porn, and sexual violence are key to shifting cultural and societal views and protect victims and survivors. This is especially important for those in positions with a high likelihood of encountering victims (transportation, justice system, law enforcement, education professionals, healthcare workers, etc.). Logistics and transportation providers are key in fighting sex trafficking. Listen to Laura, visit Truckers Against Trafficking, watch the 30 min training video, and demand that anyone in our industry takes action. You can make a difference! After a merger and/or buyout or two, he found himself working for a truckload carrier, and then started his own brokerage in 1987. By 1991 his business suffered a couple of financial hits and he left the industry. By 1994 he was back in the logistics industry (The logistics industry is like a virus, once it's in your blood you'll never get rid of it) working for the first two gentlemen that hired him right out of college. Karl worked for them until 1999, and then joined a privately held trucking company to help build their 3PL division. He worked with that company for 19 years before joining Circle Logistics in 2018. Joe Donnell graduated with a Music/Business Degree from DePauw University in 1982. He went on to work for Arthur Andersen & Co in Chicago for 3 years. From there he moved back to his hometown of Fort Wayne, In with Coopers & Lybrand for a year. Then he had a stint with Tokheim Corporation as their Internal Audit Manager and then Manager of Finance during which time he became a Certified Public Accountant. After a short 3 years at Alfe Heat Treating and then on to Transportation with L & L Transportation in Waterloo, IN that was acquired by Inergy LP and then Crestwood LP. Joe ran that trucking operation for those companies for 19 years as they went from $8 million in sales to $230 million in annual sales. Once that was done he went to Circle Logistics in FW where he has been for over 3 years as their Senior Director of Operations. Norman Bodek, the Godfather of Lean, was a visionary, great promoter and always willing to help. His recent passing has many in the lean world sharing stories of his contributions and how he impacted their lives. For Chris Barnes, it was simple, as the host of Supply Chain is Boring, he wanted to share his story and he was willing to oblige. They started by discussing the session length. Norman was concerned with having enough to talk about. Chris indicated if they could get about 50 minutes of content, they would be good. A couple hours later they were finished. As an end-product they created 3 separate podcast episodes. That was Norman. Loved what he had accomplished and was able to recall everything as if it happened yesterday. Given that Chris started his career implementing JIT (and Lean) solutions, he felt like a pupil sitting at the side of a great philosopher. He was always teaching and enjoyed sharing the benefits of what could be. He viewed the future as full of possibilities. Little did Chris know one of the best parts of being a podcast host is getting to know people like Norman Bodek.
