On June 26th, The Wall Street Journal reported that FedEx plans to spin off their freight division - and the most interesting part is why. FedEx Freight is the less-than-truckload (LTL) division of the company. It is the most profitable division, with a recent operating margin over 20 percent, compared to 11.8 percent for FedEx Ground and 2 percent for FedEx Express. The company has realized that the division is so successful it will generate more shareholder value on its own. With estimated valuations between $30 and 50 Billion, it is too big to be bought, but too small of a division of FedEx to stay. Pending an internal review scheduled to be complete later this year, FedEx Freight is likely to have a future as a standalone company. In this episode of the Art of Supply podcast, Kelly Barner covers this story in the larger context of supply chain operations, investment, and profitability: Providing an overview of the current LTL landscape Comparing FedEx Freight's performance with UPS Freight, which the company spun off in 2021 Considering what this move may mean for the supply chain as a whole and for procurement professionals tasked with managing LTL spend Links: FedEx Ground's Contractor Woes Case Dismissed: Spencer Patton Prevails Over FedEx Reading FedEx Ground the RICO Act Kelly Barner on LinkedIn Art of Supply LinkedIn newsletter Art of Supply on AOP Subscribe to This Week in Procurement

Leslie is first joined by the Chairman of Sonecon, and former U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs, Dr. Rob Shapiro. The two delve into his latest piece for Washington Monthly, titled, "Data Don't Lie: Biden's Economic Record is Much Better than Trump's." (Link here: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2024/01/26/data-dont-lie-bidens-economic-record-is-much-better-than-trumps/) Then, Leslie interviews Deputy Director of the Teamsters' Airline Division, Bob Fisher. They discuss why and how workers at FedEx Express and Delta are organizing in an effort to unionize, and why that's so significant nationally. Leslie is joined by Deputy Director of the Teamsters' Airline Division, Bob Fisher. First, Bob breaks down how Mechanics and related classifications at FedEx Express, the largest cargo airline in the United States, have launched an organizing drive to join the Teamsters. The workers' campaign to form their union grew organically, with the mechanics reaching out to the union, signing thousands of authorization cards, and taking other actions to move along the organizing process all on their own. Second, Leslie and Bob discuss the unprecedented news that the Teamsters, the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAM), and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) have united to organize roughly 45,000 Delta Air Lines workers. The Teamsters represent tens of thousands of aviation technicians. Those at companies like United Airlines and UPS Air Cargo are among the highest paid in the craft. Their collective bargaining agreements have raised the bar across the entire industry. However, Delta has been difficult to unionize in the past and has the fewest union members of the four largest passenger carriers (only the pilots and controllers are unionized). A big part of the reason that Delta's techs are organizing is because they have serious concerns about job security. Without a union, they can be terminated for any reason or no reason at all. They also have no protection against outsourcing to foreign repair stations. Outsourcing is a big problem in aircraft maintenance. Not only does it lead to less good-paying union jobs in America. It also threatens passenger safety. Delta outsources a great deal of its fleet maintenance. Atlanta is Delta Air Lines' headquarters and reportedly the largest employer in the city. An organizing victory at the company would be a monumental achievement – not just for the aviation craft, but for the entire labor movement in the South. The Teamsters represent members in the airline industry, including mechanics, customer service agents, reservationists, simulator technicians, ramp agents, stock clerks, dispatch personnel, flight attendants and pilots. The Teamsters Airline Division continues to negotiate some of the best contracts in the industry, making Teamster contracts and membership the best choice for airline-industry employees. Over the past few years, the Teamsters Airline Division has focused its efforts not only on giving their members a voice in the workplace and in Washington, but also on being a voice for the American traveling public. Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit Teamster.org for more information. FedEx will combine nearly all of its ground, air and other operations by June 2024 as part of a $4 billion cost-cutting initiative, the company announced April 5. The planned 14-month, phased-in transition ultimately will consolidate FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Service and other operating companies into Federal Express Corp. That will be a single company that will operate as a unified, fully integrated, air-to-ground network under the FedEx brand.
As a FedEx shipper, there is a 99% chance that you have seen a DAS or delivery area surcharge fee on your FedEx invoice. A delivery area surcharge applies to shipments intended for select U.S. ZIP codes. DAS also applies to FedEx Express and FedEx Ground shipments destined for areas in Alaska and Hawaii that are remotely populated and challenging to reach. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Guest BioI get to work on many of FedEx Express' R&D projects that can run the gamut from Robotics to RFID to Drones to Advance Sensors to Robotics. I mentioned Robotics twice because this is where I love to spend most of my time. From working on a robotic arm for Pick and Place applications to working with a mobile robot for Material Handling applications, I really love working with our new mechanical employees. If not at my desk, I can be found at our R&D facility near the Memphis Hub or in one of our operations working on new technology and preparing it for deployment. There is also the possibility that I am at a conference speaking about robotics, automation, and workforce development.Main Discussion Points- What are some of the most publicly visible systems? In today's episode, we talk with Kirk Lawrence, the bestselling author of Zero's Heroes, the 1981 true story of when personal trainer Kirk Lawrence was hired by San Francisco 49ers tight end, Charle Young. Their backgrounds were like night and day, but for six months their training became legendary in the Niners organization. Charle's results included leading a Niners team that went from “Laughable Losers to Super Bowl XVI Champions.” Fresno, CA, then gave him The Key to the City. Kirk's own transformation fueled his fitness career success. His story takes you from when he ran away as a teenager in the dead of night to where he meets Joanie Greggains and makes an impact on morning television. Kirk continued as a consultant to San Quentin prison, coaching fitness students around the world with IDEA, leading the 10,000 person Dole Cup tournament in Japan, being hired by UCSF Medical School to lead a 2 year study on women, exercise and preventing osteoporosis, and training America's public school students with Raisin Youth Fitness, endorsed by Arnold Schwarzenegger and the then 1991 President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Everyone wants to feel like a hero. But grit, persistence and determination alone make the difference. No matter what the situation, Kirk went on a coaching quest to be his best. His enduring message is to stick to the fight when you're the hardest hit, it's when things seem the worst- Rest, but Don't Quit! ------------------ Kirk grew up, like many children today, in a family that started out like a dream and ended in a divorce. His parent's divorce took place in January of 1965. He was stuck in a toxic environment, and as he got older, the question he needed to answer was how anyone could rise above the constant, toxic, negative divorce stress. He learned from tremendous instructors in Kenpo, Yoga, Wing Chun, weight training with Vince Gironda and Frank Zane, as well from the dance, ballet, and movement instructors at the American Conservatory Theater. He was a graduate of the famous bodybuilding camp, Zane Haven, in Palm Springs, California. These coaches helped Kirk make an impact on physical education and fitness training for men, women, and children. 1975 Black Belt, Chinese Kenpo 1979 1st Personal Training Client 1980 Marine World Conditioning 1981 NFL Personal Trainer/Flexibility Coach 1983 Morning Stretch TV Show, Music Coordinator 1984 Personal Fitness Specialist, Cooper Institute 1984 Men's National Aerobics Champion (FitAerobics) 1984 Group Exercise Leadership, Cooper Institute 1985 California Department of Corrections San Quentin Prison 1986-1990 Continuing Education Provider, ACE 1989 Osteoporosis Exercise Research, Fitness Director University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Co-developed with Nancy Lawrence, Fitness Coordinator 1990-1993 Physical Education San Mateo/Foster City School District 1991-1992 “Raisin Youth Fitness” Endorsed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chairman PCPFS, Co-developed with Nancy Lawrence Today Kirk lives happily in Indianapolis, Indiana with Dianna, their three kids, and dog, Roscoe. From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. IntroductionThis is Today in Five, for today, Thursday, December 19th. Here is today’s headlines in digital disruption. While many blame Amazon for driving high consumer expectations, it also seems to have clear benefits for retailers trying to keep up by driving businesses to create new resources and fulfillment networks for smaller retailers.First, here’s what’s making headlines. Third-Party Delivery Services Now $10 Billion IndustryThe online shopping trend has affected more than just retailers. Consumers have also shifted to ordering their food online through delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash. According to Technomic, consumers looking for convenient food delivery spent $10.2 billion dollars through third-party delivery services in 2018. Restaurants have scrambled to be a part of the new $10 billion dollar industry, with McDonalds forming partnerships with Uber Eats, DoorDash, and GrubHub. The fast-food chain is now forecasting $4 billion dollars in global delivery sales in 2019. While there’s no doubt food-delivery apps are changing the industry, it remains to be seen if they can achieve profitability. GrubHub, the only profitable delivery provider, reported third-quarter net income of $1 million dollars, down from $23 million dollars a year earlier. DoorDash and Postmates are both looking to go public in 2020. Jared, James Allen Partner for Concept StoreJared is partnering with digitally-native jeweler, James Allen, for a new concept store. Jared is known for its professional diamond consultants and personalized service. James Allen is one of the largest online diamond and bridal jewelry retailers, with a collection of over 250,000 thousand certified loose diamonds. The Jared and James Allen store is designed to provide a modern, elevated omnichannel shopping experience where customers feel comfortable shopping at their own pace. In a switch from traditional jewelry displays, the display cases open in the front, allowing shoppers to view jewelry from all angles. Bill Brace, the executive general manager of Jared said, “Our collaboration with James Allen allows Jared the opportunity to create a new and richer experience for our customers and create a modern environment for jewelry shopping.” Amazon Banning FedEx Ground or Home for Third-Party SellersAmazon is banning third-party sellers from using FedEx Ground or Home on Prime orders beginning this week. Amazon cited a decline in performance as its reason behind preventing sellers from using the carrier. According to the company, the temporary ban will continue, quote, “until the delivery performance of these shipping methods improves,” end quote. FedEx Express will still be available to Amazon Prime sellers and standing non-Prime orders can still be shipped through FedEx Ground and Home. Amazon Drives Fulfillment Network ExpansionWhen the founder of Supply, a specialty shaving products company, wanted to boost sales almost four years ago, he turned to Amazon. He added the company’s razors and shaving bowls to the marketplace in 2016 and was able to use the e-commerce giant’s fulfillment service to ship orders, supplementing what they were handling themselves. Three years later, he pulled Supply products from Amazon, citing fulfillment costs and seller fees shaved margins, among other issues. He said, “If you’re trying to build something, a brand, a relationship with customers, Amazon’s not a good place...Before I took it off Amazon, they started advertising their Amazon razors on my page.” He turned to Shopify, which this year started rolling out its own distribution service. For company’s like Supply, Amazon’s vast market reach and power could be a good thing. The e-commerce giant’s dominance of digital sales has sparked a fast-growing ecosystem of startups and services aimed at matching Amazon’s growing network and at helping retailers and brands meet rising consumer expectations. The new businesses are creating competition for Amazon, even as the giant itself continues to disrupt traditional retail and distribution strategies. Some of the new companies cater to brands that might sell on Amazon but don’t want to pay fulfillment charges, or that view Amazon as a competitor. Some major brands have distanced themselves from the e-commerce giant, with Nike recently deciding not to sell on Amazon anymore. Instead, they chose to use tools they’ve either built themselves or brought in from other companies.Businesses like Shopify, Wix.com, and Squarespace help sellers set up their digital stores and process payments. And a growing lineup of new software firms offer tailored technology to tell retailers where to keep their inventory. Players well known for helping customers with their online stores, like eBay and Shopify, plan to offer physical distribution services, using technology to create a network of third-party warehouse operators. Traditional logistics providers are even developing e-commerce services for direct-to-consumer brands and small businesses. FedEx Chief executive said in a September interview that, “The way the war is going to evolve, it’s essentially going to be Amazon with their 150 fulfillment centers...against the Walmarts with 4,700 stores or the Targets with 1,800 stores or the Best Buys with 1,000 stores.” While the Amazon Marketplace continues to dominate e-commerce, it appears to have also driven vast amounts of opportunities and resources for retailers trying to keep up. Richard W. Smith talks about his role at the Greater Memphis Chamber, the Memphis economy and job market, and his various roles at FedEx Express with Bill Dries, reporter for The Daily Memphian, and host Eric Barnes.
From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. IntroductionWith your E-Commerce Retail Briefing for today, Wednesday, October 23rd, I'm Vincent Phamvan.Digitally-native company, Brandless, is expanding into new territory. One component of a broader plan for the company going into 2020, is to have Brandless products on the shelves of major national retailers. According to the CEO, one unnamed major retailer has already signed onto the plan. First, here are some retail headlines.CVS and UPS Partner in Testing Drone Delivery of PrescriptionsCVS and UPS have partnered to test delivering prescriptions to people’s homes by drone through the shipping company’s drone unit, Flight Forward. This month, UPS won the U.S. Government’s first approval to operate a drone airline, putting it above rivals like Amazon and Wing. The new prescription delivery service from CVS is said to debut in one or two U.S. cities in the coming weeks. The partnership announcement comes not long after CVS competitor, Walgreens, announced their partnership with Wing and FedEx Express for on-demand drone delivery, making their first home delivery in Virginia. Nike, Under Armour CEOs Stepping DownNike’s CEO, Mark Parker, is stepping down. The company announced the news on Tuesday. Effective in January, Parker will be replaced by the former CEO of eBay. News of Parker’s departure came the same day Under Armour announced its CEO, Kevin Plank, would be stepping down from the role in January. Parker has been with Nike for four decades and became the company’s CEO in 2006, while Plank founded Under Armour 23 years ago, “in his grandmother’s basement.” Both Parker and Plank plan to stay on as executive chairmen at their respective companies.BestBuy Offering Free Next-Day DeliveryElectronics titan, Best Buy, is introducing a new online delivery option just in time for the holidays. The retailer will now offer free next-day delivery on thousands of items for about 99 percent of its customers. The program excludes some bigger and heavier products like big-screen TVs and refrigerators. Customers who order an oversized item or live outside a free next-day delivery zone will get free standard shipping on all orders, no membership or minimum required. Best Buy is rolling out free next-day delivery alongside other existing omnichannel fulfillment options including one-hour in-store pickup and same-day delivery for online orders placed before 3:00 pm. Brandless Expanding Into Brick-And-MortarE-Commerce business, Brandless, is looking to expand into brick-and-mortar. The digitally-native brand was founded in 2017 and made its name by offering environmentally-friendly consumer products and instead of offering brand name items, the company stocked one “brandless” choice of each item. Now with a new leadership team at the helm, Brandless is looking to expand into new territory. The company may soon be on the shelves of national retailers. Their CEO said that, “Online is one thing, but in consumers' stores, they want to be able to find our product as well. So we're very excited about wholesale strategy. It's going to be what I would consider a significant win,”.The company’s pivot into brick-and-mortar, beyond two pop-up stores in New York City and Los Angeles, is just one of three initiatives the e-commerce brand is embarking on going into 2020. The other two elements of the plan include doubling down on the CBD market and expanding into wellness and beauty products. The CEO said he expects Brandless to ultimately launch its products within 10,000 stores across the US, as part of a partnership with four to five as-of-yet unnamed national retailers. The company has signed with at least one major retailer so far.ClosingFind out how Simplr can cut your customer service response time through cutting-edge technology and on-demand talent at simplr.ai. Remaining FedEx UPS and USPS Shipping Holidays for 2016 - October, November, December 2016 thru January 3, 2017 Today is October 5, 2016. Let's talk about the remaining Shipping Holidays for 2016. Shipping holidays are those days that the major shipping companies take a break from picking up and delivering packages. As a small business owner or employee these are important dates to know. These dates tell you when you will be able to ship a customers order, when they should receive it, and if you should even come into work. We all know the major holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.... but what happens when a holiday falls on a weekend, as does Christmas and New Years? Is the holiday then observed on Friday, or maybe Monday, or possibly not at all?Remaining Shipping Holidays for October, November, December 2016, and January 2017 for FedEx, UPS and USPSMonday, October 10 Columbus Day - The USPS will be closed in observation of Columbus day, All FedEx and UPS services will be available, with the exception of FedEx Home Delivery, they work Tuesday thru Saturday.Friday, November 11 Veterans Day - The USPS will be closed in observation of Veterans day, All FedEx and UPS service will be available.Thursday, November 24 Thanksgiving Day - FedEx Express, Ground, Home Delivery and Smartpost , along with UPS, and the United States Postal Service will be closed in observation of Thanksgiving. UPS notates that UPS Express Critical® will be available this day.All services will re open the next day, November 25th, the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The only exception is FedEx Express notes that they will have modified service this day. "Early Station, on call pickups and drop box closings in some areas". So if you plan on shipping anything FedEx express that Friday, you may want to give them a call to clarify if the service you require is available. Their phone# is 1-800-GO-FEDEX.And don't forget Cyber Monday the following Monday, December 1st. If you haven't started making preparations for these very big shopping days, may I suggest that you get started ASAP. Make sure you have plenty of stock on hand, and plenty of shipping supplies for these two days, as hopefully they will be big sales,... and shipping days for you!Friday, December 23 The Friday before Christmas. It looks like all FedEx services will be open, including Express, Ground, Home Delivery and Smartpost. The only exception to this is FedEx Ground notates that on this day they will only be delivering, no pickups for FedEx Ground on the Friday before Christmas. I have to assume this is to give drivers the full day to deliver packages and not split time with making pickups. I am certain that they do not want any undelivered packages this week. Also, don't fret about no pick ups this day, because I have to assume they would just sit at the local hub until Tuesday night, seeing there are no pickups Monday either. The United States Postal Service is open and making their normal rounds on this day, as is UPS Sunday, December 25 Christmas Day is on a Sunday this year. FedEx, UPS and the USPS will all be closed this day according to their websites.Monday, December 26 The Day after Christmas, it looks like FedEx Express, Ground, Home Delivery and Smart Post will be closed this day, as will UPS and the USPS. UPS notates that UPS Express Critical® will be available this day.Saturday, December 31 New Years Eve falls on a Saturday this year and New Years Day on Sunday, January 1, 2017Monday, January 2 2017 FedEx and UPS will be closed the Monday after the Sunday New years day. USPS will also be closed on this Monday also, but as of today, October 3, 2016, the last holiday listed on the USPS Holiday Schedule is Christmas Day. I checked a Government website and it is listed as a federal Holiday, and it states that the USPS observes all of these days. Tuesday, January 3 All FedEx, UPS, and USPS services will reopen, with the exception of FedEx Home Delivery. FedEx Home Delivery Drivers normal work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday and Monday off, this way the Home Delivery guys don't get left out and get a 3 day weekend.I'm not sure how you guys handle holiday's at your company, but here at Fastpack Packaging, If FedEx and UPS are not running, that also usually means that the USPS isn't open either, and most of our suppliers are closed, so we go ahead and take it too! It's not like we can ship anything....If you would like a printable copy of these dates, visit our blog at http://www.fastpack.net/blog/ or you can visit the below links for FedEx, UPS and USPS and print their list of holidays.http://www.fedex.com/us/service-guide/holiday-schedule.htmlhttps://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/imp_exp/operation.htmlhttps://about.usps.com/news/events-calendar/2016-postal-holidays.htmhttps://www.federalpay.org/holidaysIf you have any questions about Shipping or packaging your product lines for shipping, please feel free to email me, or tweet @FASTPACK , and I would love to help you!
