After three years spent looking for stories about this incredible region of mine, coming back from a little break was never going to be easy. No matter how ahead you plan, the dread of being late or having chosen the wrong subject is always around the corner. Luckily, though, this land is so full of amazing things that you just need a bit of luck and inspiration. A while ago, as I was researching for stuff to talk about, I bumped into an article that was talking about a town in Maremma that I had heard something about a long time ago. As it's quite far from where I live I never actually visited it but then I read a couple words that almost prompted me to take the car and drive there immediately. What were those words, you might ask? Possibly the best nickname for a town I've come across in the past 10 years: "Little Jerusalem". Being an history buff I immediately started thinking about the Templar Knights, relics stolen during the Crusades but the explanation was much simpler and, possibly, more intriguing. This charming village earned its nickname by being one of the very few places where Jews expelled from Rome actually were free to live and prosper. This story was so interesting that I had to look into it, which explains why, this week, What's Up Tuscany will travel south, to the heart of Maremma, to tell you everything there is to know about Pitigliano, a tuff masterpiece of a town that has got to be seen to be believed.If you listen to the full episode I will tell you about the many landmarks in this hilltop village, from a pretty church to a monumental fountain, from the aqueduct that was a gift from the Medici to an ancient monastery that became a fashionable palace in the Renaissance after being revamped by a famous architect. Then we will focus on the history of the Jewish community, how the ghetto grew with time and how the relationship between them and the general populace was strong enough to convince many regular families to risk their lives in order to hide their neighbours from the clutches of the Gestapo. The synagogue is still active and, even if the community is much smaller than in the past, people in Pitigliano still celebrate it by producing kosher wine and organising events to promote this interesting heritage. After some info on how to know the ghetto a bit better, I'll also point you to a couple amazing walks in the surrounding countryside that will let you know the mysterious and incredible Vie Cave, tens of metres deep man-made roads carved into stone that still baffle experts.In the final chapter I'll provide you with plenty of tips on stuff to do, eat and drink in this part of the Maremma that has a lot of things to offer. If you know what's good for you, try a good acquacotta, the old-time soup that is part of local folklore but don't forget to try some of the sweets that are produced around here. Some, like the migliaccio or the cialdino del tufo, sound quite simple and similar to other stuff you find around Tuscany but there are a couple, from the "tortello dolce" to the "sfratto dei Goym" that you can find only in Pitigliano. We will wrap things up with two excellent local wines that are quite great and don't cost a fortune plus a bunch of events that you should sign on your calendar. The Count's Banquet in late August sounds like a very smart choice. This is not your regular Tuscany: it's a place that is at the same time very real, hearty and charming. Rather than cramming on the beach with thousands or fighting with random tourists in downtown Florence, spend some time here, in the heart of Maremma. We come back to you after our only second break in almost 3 years, something of which we sincerely apologise. Unfortunately, this time, we had a pretty good excuse as my little corner of the world was ravaged by some serious floods. While we are all well, we had a lot of cleaning up and helping to do, which made it impossible to publish our weekly window on this incredible land. In order to forget about the sorrow and destruction around us, this time I decided to talk about a little town not too far from where I live that has a particular claim to fame. As it happens quite frequently around here, in the Middle Ages it was an important stronghold and was a mandatory stop on the famous Via Francigena, the road that brought pilgrims to Rome from Northern Europe. What sets it apart from the other hill towns is the fact that, several centuries apart, two famous emperors were instrumental in its fortunes, leaving an indelible mark on the town. The place is both spectacular and full of little oddities, which explains why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you to San Miniato, the town of the two emperors, to tell you what makes it so special.If you listen to the full episode you will learn how it was Frederick II to make sure that the pilgrim road passed here and how he commissioned the imposing tower that, to this day, is the symbol of this town. I will then tell you how Napoleon Buonaparte came here at least twice to meet some relatives and how his elderly relative was fundamental in his spectacular rise to power. In the middle chapters we will explore the imposing palace that follows the ancient walls and delve into the many inscriptions on its facade. Then we will take a look at the mysterious cathedral, whose ceramic basins replicate the shape of the two constellations that were supposed to bring good luck to the town and the marble rectangle that was a sign of the presence of the powerful Templar Knights. We will continue our tour of this town by looking at the ancient crucifix that, according to legend, was able to protect people from floods and the clever roads behind the walls, which were built in order to unleash a veritable firestorm on any assailant.In the final chapter I will walk you through a little museum dedicated to the suffering endured by Tuscans in the Second World War, give you some pointers on the famous festival dedicated to white truffles to top it off with our mandatory travel tips on the best places where you can taste great food without breaking the bank. This time they're rather weird, as we go from a farmer's market to the backroom of a butcher shop to a small shop that hides an amazing wealth of taste. Word to the wise: don't leave San Miniato without trying their truffles crisps, they're absolutely addictive. This might not be a town as famous as Florence or Siena but if you come here you will discover that it has so many incredible things to see and do. I thought that the Templer Knights was some historical group that fought in the crusades and was disbanded by the church and would later be part of freemason folk lore. After spending the last few episodes going through the least known pages of the history of our region, we go back to one of the original missions of this podcast: tell the tales and legends that made this land so special and unique. Rather than a weird collection of random stories, we will bring you to the wonderful town of Lucca, a Medieval gem that is quite misunderstood. How is it so? Most people, Tuscans included, are so astounded by its charm to miss the fact that the beautiful small streets and the magnificent palaces hide a pretty dark side. Lucca, despite being known as a very religious town, is a place where angels and demons walk hand in hand, constantly fighting for the souls of its inhabitants. Come with us on a journey on the many legends that surround some of the most popular landmarks of the town, from the Renaissance walls, the only ones that survive intact to this day, to the quirky cathedral, with its weird, asymmetrical facade. We will delve into the myths that surround the Volto Santo, the most ancient wooden sculpture survived in Europe, centre of a devotion that brought thousands of pilgrims from all over Europe to the Tuscan town on their way to Rome. We'll also talk about the miracles linked to the crucifix that, according to tradition, represents the real face of Jesus Christ and why in front of it there is an executioner's axe. We'll try to explain the mystery behind the small labyrinth on one of the pillars of the church and its mystical link with the notorious monastic fighting order of the Templar Knights. Our journey will then lead us to the nearby church of San Frediano, whose south door became known as the "door of the angel" after a very saintly housemaid act of charity went very wrong. Follow us as we go through the legend of the "Devil's Stone", the ledge of a window on the facade of a 15th century palace that no human hand is apparently able to fix. Lucca, as many other things in Tuscany, has so much more to offer than the postcard image everyone is so in love with. You just need to look a bit deeper to realise that under the skin there is so much more. After a moment of synchronicity and learning about the Austrian mystic Rudolf Steiner, he moved back to the UK where he pursued a career in Coaching and Training. This week marks the beginning of our in-depth look at the Templar Knights.  What are they hiding and where did they do.  We will be covering several topics in the weeks to come.  From the treasure they hid to there connection to the Church and Masonic Order.   

The secrecy around the Order of the Knights Templar, and the speed with which they disappeared over the space of a few years, has led to Knights Templar legends. These range from rumors about their association with the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant, to questions about their association with the Freemasons. Some claim that a few groups of Templars actually traveled to North America to hide a grand treasure. More circumstantial evidence also suggests that other Templar Knights explored the New England coast in the late 1390s, leaving behind several carved stones with writing similar to that found on the Kensington Runestone. Some people also claim that the Holy Grail is possibly hidden somewhere in North America! One suggested location is Oak Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia. Further, some scholars calim that Christopher Columbus was himself associated with the Knights Templar (via family connections), and found his way to America in 1492 because of directions handed down by the Templar Knights! This theory is based partly on the fact that Columbus used Templar symbols in his writing. While a lot of this is all highly debatable and unproven, it certainly gives us all a lot to think about!

Has it really been two years since we covered TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD? That is far too long! It is with great pleasure that we return to the land of the living dead Templar Knights! For the second of Ossorio's fantastic Blind Dead films we examine the two different cuts available on Region 1 DVD and then ponder the deeper social commentary buried within the story. Really? Only for a little while. We mostly chat about the casting choices, the relative beauty of the female actors, the story's odd love rectangle, the mechanics of the creeping living dead and the number of homages to (or steals from) other movies that Ossorio weaves into the story. I wish we had spent more time on how difficult it is to destroy these walking corpses but some things get lost in the stumble/shuffle. Of course, this being the NaschyCast the show starts with some unrelated discussion of several monster related topics. I wax enthusiastic about Universal Horror novels and we discuss the joys of Shaun Hutson's horror epic 'Slugs', which leads us to the question of why we have yet to cover any examples of the cinema of Spain's Juan Piquer Simon. He certainly fits our criteria as he is Spanish and has directed plenty of Horror, so maybe a show on PIECES is in our future. That one won't be for the faint of heart! We also have an impromptu discussion of Lucio Fulci's tetralogy of gore films and - just for fun - rank them from best to worst. In the mailbag section we commiserate with a listener fresh from a viewing of FURY OF THE WOLFMAN and talk briefly about several worthy Jess Franco titles. The year is 1128 of the Common Era. The first crusade has just finished and European Christians are in control of the Holy Land. In the heart of it all stands the Holy City of Jerusalem and at its centre is the historical Temple of Solomon or as we know it today: the Dome of the Rock. 9 Knights Templar, following precise excavation blue prints, dig silently beneath the temple mount in the dead of night. Suddenly and without warning, they halt all digging. They quickly mount their horses and bolt directly back to Europe without stopping. What is uncertain is what they have found that night. What is known, is that shortly after returning, these Knights became enormously rich and powerful. Fast forward some two hundred years to the year 1318, October 12, the day before Friday the 13 th, 24 Templar Knights were seen boarding 18 ships off the coast of France. The next day Templar Knights around Europe were rounded up and thrown unceremoniously into jail to be tried for heresy and devil worship, Friday the 13 th forever cast into legend as an unlucky day…indeed. Off the coast of France , the 18 Templar ships previously mentioned, have set sail and were gone. Vanishing as if never existing. Their contents and passengers never to be heard from again. The Knights Templar; from their inception shrouded in secrecy. How could only 9 knights protect the Holy Land , what was their real mission? Did they find the secrets of the universe reportedly stored in hidden catacombs beneath the Temple Mount ? The Ark of the Covenant containing Moses’ original Tablets of The 10 Commandments? The Holy Grail with the power of immortality? The Knights Templar: They have forever been entwined with names like Richard the Lion Heart, the great Muslim leader Saladin and…Jesus Christ Himself. Were they indeed responsible for the safety of Jesus’ and Mary Magdalene’s offspring as stated in Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code?” Does the Holy offspring wonder amongst today, waiting for the precise moment to declare themselves?
