Everyone has a mental narrative inside their head of what story they want to live and whether or not they are fitting inside that narrative right now in their lives. And what happens is we have a false narrative inside of our head that is not reality, and so it causes discontentment or misinterpretation of the events in our lives. And it causes us to pursue a false reality for what story we want for our lives. That's why I've been saying in this podcast that if we can understand the real narrative that our life is in — if we can see the bigger story our life is in because God became Jesus and lived and died and rose again and is returning with his resurrection kingdom — there is a power in that. That's the gospel that the apostle Paul says has the power of God to heal and restore our lives in Romans 1:16. Which brings us to Psalm 45. At first pass we may not think this psalm has much to offer us in drawing near to God. But when we slow down and start to really notice what's happening and pay attention to the words, it starts to amaze us at how it is a Holy Spirit inspired prophetic announcement of the bigger story our life is in.  Psalm 45 ESV A Maskil of the Sons of Korah; a love song. 1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.  2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever.  3 Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and majesty!  4 In your majesty ride out victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let your right hand teach you awesome deeds!  5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; the peoples fall under you.  6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness;  7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. I often ask myself what did the apostles who saw the risen Jesus know about Jesus that I don't know? I read where a Jesuit once said of Dorothy Day that she lived “as though the truth were true.” That's a big statement when you really think about it. Seems simple yet it's profound. Do I live as though the truth were true? Do you? When we read the letters of the apostles and the story of their lives in the New Testament, it's clear that they lived “as though the truth were true.” They lived as though everything they knew about Jesus as true. And we see that especially in these autobiographical reflections of the apostle Paul that we can read in his letter to the Philippians in the New Testament. Over the years when I have reflected on these words something happens deeper in my heart and my soul with Jesus. Let me share that with you in this episode. Philippians 1:21-23 NIV For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far. Philippians 3:7-11 NIV But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. It's easy to get drawn in or intimidated by culturally powerful people. Especially when they are culturally powerful or prosperous because they openly disregard or reject God's righteousness. It can cause us to lose courage in our faith and commitment to God. All this was something David could relate to. And even Jesus quotes from this psalm in Matthew 5:5 as David puts all of this back into the real narrative of the bigger story. Let's listen in on this psalm together.  Psalm 37 ESV Of David.  1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!  2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.  3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.  4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.  6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.  7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!  8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Anyone who takes the Bible seriously knows we live in a world where there is real evil. And that evil can take deep root in people's lives so that they are motivated to bring evil into our lives. To do us harm. To hurt us in some way. That was David's circumstance as he prayed Psalm 35. And I think his prayer is a great example for us as we deal with people with evil intentions in our lives. What should you do? How should you pray in such situations? Let's look at how David does it in this episode. Psalm 35 ESV Of David.  1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! 3 Say to my soul, “I am your salvation!”  4 Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me!  5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know.  12 They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. 17 How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions!  22 You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! Imagine writing a letter to a loved one without ever imagining them in your mind as you write. Not much of a conversation. Now imagine conversing with God without using your imagination. Again, not much of a conversation. But the Bible gives us poetic pictures of God for us to use to imagine him in a way that brings his reality to life in our minds and hearts. Revelation 22:1-5 is one of those passages that's explosive word imagery of our relationship with God. Let's talk about that in this episode. Revelation 22:1–5 ESV 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. As you come before God to pray, what are you usually thinking? To some degree you are using your imagination, picturing in some way God with you and listening to you. But in the Psalms David imagined much more than that. If you pay attention you'll notice that his language of prayer is filled with intimate and powerful mental images. He used his imagination to picture his relationship with God in his mind as he prayed. Psalm 32:7-11 is a good example of how David's Spirit-inspired imagination can inspire the kind of imagination in our own prayers that help us draw closer to God in trust and joy. Psalm 32:7–11 ESV 7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah  8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.  9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.  10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.  11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! As a psalmist uniquely inspired by the Holy Spirit (Matt 22:43), King David's prayers were often prophetic; describing poetically/figuratively what will ultimately be literal in the future through the Son of David, the Messiah (the Christ). For example, we see this regarding Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection in Psalm 22. And I think we see this in Psalm 30 regarding the resurrected future of Christ's redeemed. Which of course included David. David is praying figuratively and poetically God's redemptive realities in his life. And what he presently prays poetically will also be true literally for all those redeemed in Christ. When we see that future, it empowers us in the now. Let's use our poetic imagination to see that life-giving story and that future together in this episode.  Psalm 30 ESV A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of the temple. 1 I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.  3 O LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol; you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.  4 Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.  5 For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. 10 Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me! O LORD, be my helper!”  11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,  12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. I think in some ways the reason we lose emotional control at work or at home or in traffic or wherever is because we keep too much emotional control when talking to God. We have it backwards. Learning to be more emotionally expressive, even dramatic, to God in our prayer life is an important way to become more like David (and Jesus) in our relationship with God. And that helps us be more like Jesus in our relationship with others. What is the number one truth of life in the Bible? The Bible's big truth for your life? Here it is: Only God's will brings life; and every other will brings destruction. Dependence upon God brings life; independence from God brings death.This is the entire Bible's first equation. This is what all of human history will ultimately show the universe a billion years from now. This is the ultimate lesson to be learned in everything that happens in your life. And this is the message of the first Psalm. It's a great Psalm for your soul to soak in if you truly want to live the “blessed” life. A Bigger Life. Let's take a moment and do that now in this episode.  Psalm 1 NIV 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,  2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.  3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.  4 Not so the wicked! Why should you choose God over anything else? I always have to remind myself why following (seeking, trusting, obeying) Christ is always worth it more than not. My guess is you do too. This is a great Psalm to remind you of who God really is for you, and why you desire him more than anything or anyone else. Take some time to let God speak to you and then let's take a moment to speak back to him in prayer with some great phrases in this Psalm. Psalm 26:3 ESV For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness. Psalm 26:6–9 ESV I...go around your altar, O LORD, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds. O LORD, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells. Do not sweep my soul away with sinners. Jesus's words in Matthew 10:29-31 have been some of his most important words in my life because of their powerful picture of God's detailed care and involvement in my life. Jesus emphasizes our eternal value to the God who created everything in this universe! But the context of these verses makes these words far more than just comforting. They are words that draw the battle lines in our heart of what we will fear the most. And when we understand the context of these amazing words, we realize how Jesus is redirecting our fears in a life changing way. We all worry. We all deal with anxiety. Most of the time it's the back-burner feeling that's like a slow leak in our joy. In Matthew 6 Jesus directly challenges that kind of anxiety and worry. Think about it this way -- the creator of the universe -- YOUR creator -- became human and is telling YOU why you don't have to live a life pushed around by your worry and anxiety. Let's take a moment together in this episode and hear how Jesus challenges our worry and anxiety, and then we can experience his words more deeply by praying them. Matthew 6:25–34 NIV 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. The risen Jesus told his disciples that ultimately what is written in the Psalms points to him (see Luke 24:25-27, 44 below). We especially see this in Psalm 24, written by King David a thousand years before Jesus was born. I love these messianic psalms of David (psalms that specifically describe to us something about the Messiah) because they show me how God has his ancient, eternal, bigger story that he is bringing to this earth through Jesus the Christ/Messiah. And these psalms poetically show me how I can be inside that story and live into that story today! And I can experientially seek the face of God (v. 6) as I pray this ancient prayer. And you can pray it with me in this episode. Luke 24:25–27 NIV He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24:44 NIV He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Psalm 24 ESV 0 A Psalm of David. 1 The earth is the LORD'S and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, 2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.  3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?  4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah  7 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!  9 Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.  10 Who is this King of glory? Jesus quoted the first line of Psalm 22 on the cross. It was a prayer of anguish as he took upon himself the wrath of the Father for the sins of his people. But it was also Jesus's way of pointing his disciples to the rest of Psalm 22. And it's amazing! Let's discuss why it's amazing together in this episode. Mark 15:24–34 ESV 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. 33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Psalm 22 ESV A Psalm of David. 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; 15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— 17 I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. 22 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! 26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! 27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. 28 For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. 31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. Jesus saw the Psalms as written by their human author, but also by the Holy Spirit (see Matt 22:41-46 below). Although King David lived over a thousand years before Christ, he is one of the Bible's primary foreshadowing figures of Jesus as Christ. That's why the Messiah was often referred to as “the son of David” (Matt 1:1, 9:27, 22:42). So sometimes the Spirit would speak foreshadowing prophetic lines in the psalms of David, in particular, that give us a poetically insightful promise of salvation in Jesus as the Christ. When we learn to read certain psalms of David with this lens, it opens up a greater experience of meditation and prayer for us. Let's do that in this episode on Psalm 20. Matthew 22:41–46 NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord'? For he says, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ' 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,' how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Psalm 20 ESV To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.  1 May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! 5 May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions!  6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand.  7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.  8 They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.  9 O LORD, save the king! This is a rare Psalm where David no longer feels any threats to his life. God has completely delivered him from all his enemies, including his most dangerous enemy in King Saul. The poetic images David uses in this Psalm are so illustrative in ascribing to God what ALL of us will joyfully want to say the moment of our resurrection, when we ourselves will be completely delivered from all our threats. This is a great Psalm for meditation and prayer in living into the bigger story God has for you! Let me lead you in doing that right now with this episode. Psalm 18 ESV  To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who addressed the words of this song to the LORD on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:  1 I love you, O LORD, my strength.  2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.  3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 16 He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.  17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 29 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.  30 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.  31 For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? 34 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.  35 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. 35 The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation. 35 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever. Usually when we get past the wall of not wanting to pray, and just start praying aloud to God, it feels good to our soul. And we realize it wasn't that hard after all. When we can take the “horizontal” concerns in our life that weigh us down and make them “vertical” by bringing them to God, we start to see them in light of God's presence and love and future in and for our lives. And the burden of all our concerns is lifted, even if just a little. This is a great Psalm to just start praying to pray and take your life vertical, letting God take your burdens and replace them with himself. Let me lead you in doing that right now with this episode. Psalm 17 ESV A Prayer of David.  1 Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!  2 From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!  3 You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.  4 With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.  5 My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.  6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words.  7 Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.  8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,  9 from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.  10 They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.  11 They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.  12 He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.  13 Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,  14 from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants.  15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.  What narrative for your life are you living into most of the time? That's the big question from Psalm 14. There's the narrative of “the fool” who lives most of the time as if “there is no God.” Then there's the narrative of those “who understand” and “seek after God.” All of us are somewhere in the middle of those two. But one big purpose of this podcast is to live into the reality of God's presence in our lives and the “fortunes of his people” by meditation and prayer through this Psalm. Psalm 14 ESV  To the choirmaster. Of David.  1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.  2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.  4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD?  5 There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous.  6 You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge.  7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! Our life won't make any sense to us in any given moment if we don't keep Jesus's return as the focus of our life's story. Revelation 21:1-7 is one of the best places in the entire Bible to do that. Especially when reading it in meditation and prayer. And for that reason it's always been one of my favorite places to turn to re-focus my mind and heart in prayer. God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. This is one of those Psalms of David where he starts off accusing God of ignoring him and forgetting about him. It says something about God that he would want to inspire David to write such an honest Psalm and put it in His Word as part of Scripture. God wants our honest prayers. And then David does what he always does; he focuses his mind and heart on the promises of who God really is for him. This little 6-verse Psalm has some powerful word imagery that is a great place for us to pray.  I've been praying through the Psalms for over 40 years now. So inevitably there have been some verses in the Psalms that I've personally found particularly powerful for prayer. I come back to them over and over, which means eventually I had them memorized and easily accessible to me anywhere in whatever circumstance. That's how we know Jesus meditated on and prayed the Psalms over the years of his life -- by the way he so quickly quoted from them (more than from any other Old Testament book) and prayed them at key times in his life (the last words of Jesus on the cross were prayers from the Psalms, from 22:1 and 31:5). In this podcast episode, I read some of my favorite, go-to verses from the Psalms that I pray more often than any other passage of Scripture. They have been powerfully used by God in my own life and at key times in my life. Let me lead you in prayer through them as well in this episode.  Psalm 16:1–2 ESV Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?   Psalm 27:4 ESV One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.   Psalm 27:13–14 ESV I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! In our last episode we looked at Psalm 38 and David's frustration with himself for being his own worst enemy. It's a psalm where David confesses his overwhelming sin and how that's made his life stink and fester. I'm thankful the Holy Spirit has inspired such prayers for us in our own sinfulness. We all know what it's like to be our own worst enemy. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit has also given us inspired scriptures and prayer with which we can pursue his righteousness -- put on his righteousness as our own new clothing that's fashioned in the image of Christ. Psalm 11 is one of those prayers, also of David. Let's do that together in this podcast episode.  Psalm 11 ESV To the choirmaster. Psalm 38 is a great example of the power of poetry to make us feel. We can feel David's own misery and frustration with himself in this psalm. He realizes how much his own stupid and foolish sins have stunk up his life and his relationships, and he needs God's help. Powerful word pictures in this psalm convey to us his anguish. It's amazing how poetic words like this can actually transfer the emotions of someone living 3,000 years ago into our own emotions today! By inspiriting David's prayer, the Holy Spirit has given us a vocabulary with which we can honestly and completely come to him with our sins. Psalm 9 has been a go-to psalm for me over the years because it reminds me of what I usually forget, and that's to give thanks to Yahweh (Hebrew: “HE IS”). Giving thanks is when we recognize and give voice to our appreciation to God. Giving thanks to God is an act that wakes us a little bit more from the spell of self-sufficiency and autonomy, and reminds us of the real world we live in as created and controlled by God forever. Something important happens in our heart and soul when we express thanks to God. Let me help you do that in this episode on Psalm 9. Psalm 8 is an amazing psalm in capturing the larger story of the Gospel. The God that created this incomprehensibly vast universe is also incomprehensibly mindful of you. When David looked up at the stars he saw the glory of God in his majesty and power, but also the glory of God in his love for him. This is a great psalm to spend time meditating through the bigger story and bigger glory God created you for and has re-placed your life in through Jesus.  Psalm 8 NIV 1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.  2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.  3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,  4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?  5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.  6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:  7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild,  8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.  9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! When Jesus started to announce the “Good News” of his coming Kingdom, the first word out of his mouth was “Blessed.” The particular word he used was loaded with complexity and meaning that it cannot be captured by that one English word “blessed.” It meant a deep security and happiness and joy and well-being and flourishing. And then he tells us what such a person lives like, and what his coming kingdom will be like. I always do better when I start my day vocalizing aloud in prayer my need for God's help and vocalizing aloud in praise who he is and who he is for me. That's exactly what David did in Psalm 5, and what we can do when we meditate on and pray and praise Psalm 5 back to God.. There are those times in your life when you really need God to answer your prayer. A crisis. An opportunity. A fork in the road. Something big is happening and only God can help! A crisis with a family member. A sudden health issue. Or finances. Or at work. There are a thousand things that can go “wrong” in the course of our lives. And it's in those times we sense a stronger need to pray. Psalm 4 was one of those times for King David. This episode will discuss how David's prayer gives us helpful direction in those anxious times.  Psalm 4 ESV 1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!  2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? This is one of those psalms that David wrote in the context of fear, insecurity, and anxiety. Yours may not be as intense as David's when he wrote this, but there are some phrases in this psalm that are calming and life-giving in any level of anxiety. Jesus intended to put words in our mouth by giving us the Lord's Prayer. Praying the Lord's Prayer — out loud or meditatively in our hearts — is a way that Jesus gives us to “tune” our hearts to be in harmony more and more with the God who created this entire universe. Because this prayer comes directly from Jesus (who is God), we know that these phrases are the kinds of prayers God wants us to pray and that he wants to answer. The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4)   Jesus says… Matthew 6:6, 9-13 (ESV) 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. We know that Psalm 41 was a prayer that Jesus meditated on and prayed often enough to quote from memory, because he does so In John 13:18. This prayer of David will help you pray the words Jesus himself often prayed, and specifically quoted before his death and resurrection as a sign to you that God delights in YOU. This episode will help you meditate on that, and lead you in a prayer to make it more real to you in your life. In Acts 20, Paul is saying his final words to the elders at the church in Ephesus, where he had spent three years in real relationship and tearful ministry. These words have some of the most powerful descriptions of how Paul actually SEEING the glorified, risen Jesus so dramatically changed his life. I believe Paul's experience with the risen Jesus was real, and he eventually was executed for refusing to stop testifying to it. There are several phrases in Paul's words in Acts 20 that can be helpful ways to think of your own life, and can guide us in a time of prayer to the risen Jesus who Paul said shined brighter than the Sun (Acts 26:12-18). Let this episode focus your own perspective of your life and help you pray to the REAL risen Jesus. Acts 20:17–21 NIV  17 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. 18 When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia. 19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents. 20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. 21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. Paul recounts his experience with the glorified risen Jesus. It was life changing for him. He never forgot Jesus's powerfully imaginative words. That's what makes this one of those passages in the Bible that is great for meditation and prayer. The story of a miraculous healing of a paralyzed man by the apostles Peter and John in Acts 3 shows all the signs of someone's memories. Unnecessary details in the narrative, like the time of day, the specific name of the gate where it happened, and the larger location by the large columns in the courtyard, are all signs that this narrative is actually told by someone's memory (Peter and John). And this healing also gives us a powerful image of what our true condition is and the kind of “restoration of all things” Christ will bring when he brings Heaven back to earth. There are illustrative words and phrases in this narrative as powerful images for prayer as you come before the Author of Life. Come there with me in this episode.  Acts 3:1–21 ESV  1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. 17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. We don't always feel what is real. But our feelings are still real to us. They are how we feel. So God gives us Spirit-inspired prayers like Psalm 43 to help us express our darker feelings honestly to God and to ourselves. And as we do, prayers like Psalm 43 help us to come back to a place of joy and hope as we align what we feel more with what is real. Try it with this episode of A Bigger Life. Sometimes the reality of who God is comforts us. Sometimes it sobers us. Both are absolutely essential for a life lived with God. We need to be reminded who God really is. Psalm 50 is one of those psalms. It appeals to our imagination in order to wake us to the reality of both the beauty and the burn of God's shining presence over all his creation..  But first we read from the New Testament: 1 Peter 5:6-11 NIV  6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. Psalm 50:1-12 ESV  1  The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.  2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.  3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest.  4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:  5 “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”  6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah 7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I'm comforted by the fact that the Holy Spirit inspired prayers in the Bible that help me express my need for God to forgive me of my sin. Where can I turn in the Bible in times of personal guilt, especially after I've so willfully sinned? Psalm 51 is one of those prayers. For 3,000 years it has perhaps been the most read and prayed psalm of all God's people. Which shows us that sin and our desire for forgiveness is something we all have in common as our greatest need. Thankfully the Holy Spirit has met that desire and need! This episode will talk about some of the key verses in this psalm and lead you in a time of prayer for forgiveness and renewal.  Psalm 51:1–4 ESV  A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.  2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!  3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.  4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Sometimes Jesus uses poetic, imaginative language to illustrate his relationship with us, especially in the Gospel of John. These are great places in Scripture to use for prayer. In John 15 Jesus uses the highly imaginative language of a grape vine and branches and fruit. Imagine this as you think about your life. Only Jesus is the True Vine that gives Life. He's the True Vine. There are lots of other imitation “vines” out there that fool us into thinking they have life, but they in fact are nothing and they make our lives nothing but nothing. But Jesus says if we abide in him as our True Vine, his LIfe flows into us and our lives flourish with Life. Praying this passage is a great way to abide in Jesus today. John 15:1–5 ESV I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:8–9 ESV  8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 10 is particularly one of those places where Jesus gives us imaginative language to help us grasp his good and loving purpose for us as our “Good Shepherd.” This is a rich passage from which to pray that will help you deepen your appreciation for all that Jesus is for you and why you should trust and follow him. Every day I need to recenter my perspective by remembering my neediness for God, and remembering to put my trust in him. That sounds so basic, yet most problems in our life first stem from getting off center from basic truths. This is a short basic psalm to help you pray a short prayer to re-verticalize your perspective and recenter your life on the solid foundation of your need for God and who God is for you. Psalm 54:1–7 ESV 1 O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might.  2 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.  3 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. On a scale of 1-10, King David's fear and anxiety was at an 11 in this psalm. The African theologian Athanasius (AD 296–373) once observed, “The other Scriptures speak to us, but the Psalms speak for us.” That's what we're doing in this podcast. Letting the Psalms speak for us as we draw near to God in prayer. King David had lots of reasons to be fearful, worried and anxious in his life. And I'm thankful for that, personally, because the Holy Spirit used those times to inspire him to write psalms that have been so helpful to me in my own worries and fears. Psalm 56 is a particular psalm I come back to again and again because there are some specific phrases David prays that help me trust God with my worries and fears. And I think these will help you as well.  Psalm 56 ESV  3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?  8 You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?  9 Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me.  10 In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise,  11 in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? 11 For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. There are times when people are spreading rumors about us. Maybe at work. In our extended families. Our church. Among our friends. And these times can be emotionally draining. We're not sure how to begin to defend ourselves. We toss at night with worry and anxiety. But the first things we need to do in these times is to take all of it to God. That's what David did 3,000 years ago when writing Psalm 59. Psalm 59 ESV ...OF DAVID, WHEN SAUL SENT MEN TO WATCH HIS HOUSE IN ORDER TO KILL HIM.  1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me;  2 deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.  3 For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O LORD,  4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready. Awake, come to meet me, and see!  5 You, LORD God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah  6 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city.  7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths with swords in their lips…. 10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. 16 But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.  17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love. Sometimes we feel far away from God. Often that's because we feel a low-grade guilt for sin in our life. But Psalm 65 shows us that God is not surprised or shocked by our sin. He just wants us to come to him with it. That's why he has built into these prayers an opportunity for us to come back to him, admit our sin, and trust in his atonement for all of it. And we find that it's always a relief and a joy when we do. So just do it. Right now. Psalm 65:3–5 ESV 3 When iniquities prevail against me, you atone for our transgressions.  4 Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! This podcast is called A Bigger Life because I'm convinced the biggest obstacle to our joy-filled life is when we get hijacked by a smaller narrative for our life. The Bible's bigger story is the remedy for that. And Psalm 66 gives us an interesting glimpse into the future of that bigger story. Psalm 73 sounds as contemporary as it gets with an honest struggle when we see the lives of those who disregard God as people with better lives. God becomes boring to us. Our Christian life becomes burdensome to us. This is one of those true-to-reality psalms I come back to again and again. Psalm 73:1–3 ESV  1 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.  2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.  3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Psalm 73:4–5 NIV  4 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.  5 They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. Psalm 73:12–13 NIV  12 This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.  13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. Psalm 73:16–28 ESV  16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,  17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.  18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin.  19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors!  20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.  21 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart,  22 I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you.  23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.  24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.  25 Whom have I in heaven but you? Sometimes when we're anxious or worried and we pray, our anxiety and worry seem to get worse. We can't sleep. What do you do then? Let's look at this raw reality by meditating on Psalm 77. Psalm 77 ESV  A PSALM OF ASAPH. 1 I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me.  2 In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted.  3 When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah  4 You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.  5 I consider the days of old, the years long ago.  6 I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search:  7 “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable?  8 Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time?  9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah  10 Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”  11 I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.  12 I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.  13 Your way, O God, is holy. When we get the Gospel wrong, we pray wrong. Revelation 5 gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of what the real story and promise of the Gospel is as we join thousands of angels in praise.  Revelation 5:1–12 NIV  1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. Imagine the awe of being present before God's very throne. That's what John sees in a vision in Revelation 4. And we can imagine that scene as we pray through John's description of what he saw.  Revelation 4:8–11 NIV  8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:  “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,' who was, and is, and is to come.”  9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. Psalm 86 is a good go-to psalm when you want to pray something that re-boots your perspective on your life and problems. It helps you re-focus your trust in God as YOUR God and his steadfast love for YOU.. LIke Psalm 81, these verses in Isaiah 40 are God speaking to his people. We can get a bigger/truer picture/concept of God's power, wisdom and care by lifting up our eyes and experience God speaking to us.   Isaiah 40:12 NIV Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Isaiah 40:18 NIV With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him? Isaiah 40:21 NIV Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? Isaiah 40:25–28 NIV  25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27 Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”? 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Our lives are always a miserable prison when God gives us over to follow our own stubborn hearts. But we can find true satisfaction by listening to his word and submitting to him.   This Psalm is the voice of God to us through the prophet Asaph. Psalm 81:8–16 ESV  8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me!  9 There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god.  10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. How can we worship in the very presence of God? The ancient Temple in the Old Testament is a picture of how we worship Him in Spirit and truth when we enter his presence through Jesus.   Psalm 84 ESV A PSALM OF THE SONS OF KORAH.  1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!  2 My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.  3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.  4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah  5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.  7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.  10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.  11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. We can see our sin for what it really is when we compare it to feasting on the abundance of God.   Psalm 36 ESV  1 Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes.  2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.  3 The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good.  4 He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil. 5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.  6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD.  7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! What would you exchange for the glory of God? The strongest motivation not to sin is when we understand the stupidity of turning from God as our only true satisfaction.    Jeremiah 2:11–13 ESV  11 But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Romans 1:22–23 NIV  22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Psalm 16:4 NAS The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied;  Psalm 36:9 ESV For with you is the fountain of life; John 4:13–14 NIV  13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Jeremiah 2:19 NIV Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Where can we put our trust in a world this side of the kingdom? To some degree everyone lies.
