In today's episode, we're joined by Tom and Chris Hannaway, brothers and Co-Founders of alcohol-free beer brand Infinite Session. With a passion for great tasting beer but a desire to incorporate some alcohol-free days into their lifestyle, Tom and Chris discovered a gap in the market for a vibrant and confident alcohol-free beer to enjoy during after-work drinks. Launched in 2018, Infinite Session beers are now stocked in leading UK retailers including Sainsbury's and Whole Foods. The brand also launched exclusively into the US state of Wisconsin in March 2020. During the pandemic, Infinite Session launched a series of special-edition beers, including the ‘Stay Home' beer from which all proceeds were donated to NHS Charities Together. Today they share advice on what to consider when expanding internationally as well as how to successfully work together as siblings. The Hannaways' advice: Take time to think about what you disagree on and come back to it after some spacePut boundaries in place and make sure you stick to themGet your messaging down first before worrying about the rest Don't focus too much on logo and web domain at the start Really think about how you would explain your idea to others, think about The Granny Test, keep it really simple Think about your product development but do tell people what you're doing as well as you need the feedbackGive your sales channels the same level of importance as product development You can only do what you can do and be comfortable with that Have hobbies outside of work to keep you passionate about your company Know when to chat with each other, and when not to Find your working rhythm together You do have to work hard but build in breaks Grow slow, try things on a smaller basis when you reach new markets to build your growth with a strong foundation You can contact Tom or Chris via Instagram or Twitter Head over to Speakpipe to leave your voice note for future guests too.LastPass the password-keeping site that syncs between devices.Google Workspace is brilliant for small businessesBuzzsprout podcast 'how to' & hosting directoryCanva has proved invaluable for creating all the social media assets and audio bites. For contracts check out Law Depot.Recorded, edited & published by Juliet Fallowfield, 2022 founder of PR for startups advisory Fallow, Field & Mason. In this episode, part 2 of our informal trilogy on Customer Education instructional design, we discuss a few failed hypotheses around content development. These are things we’ve been asked to do, and we’ve all certainly tried in our careers, but they just don’t lead to effective learning. Tune in to hear more! New Customer Education leaders, especially those who are "accidental" customer educators who get thrown into the role, don't have strong backgrounds in content development. That leads to content that can please stakeholders but will fail customers. Our goal as content creators should be to: Make content memorable, so learners won't forget it after they take our courses or read our articlesDrive actual behavior change, so learners will do something differently after they engage with our content How do we often get this wrong? Read on. Content development myth #1: The Sage on the Stage The first myth we’ll tackle is the “sage on the stage” -- the idea that if you put a really intelligent subject matter in front of learners and let them do their thing, then learning will occur. https://www.pexels.com/@mentatdgt-330508 A lot of the time, when you walk into an org with relatively immature Customer Education, you know this is happening because you have your product experts leading trainings, but those trainings are packed densely with content, and the expert runs through all of that without much interactivity. They’re basically delivering a lecture. What’s wrong with that? Well, first of all customer education isn’t like school. In school, the professor can lecture however they want, and at the end of the day the student is responsible for studying and doing what they need to do to get the grade. And their GPA has long-reaching consequences for them. That doesn’t work in Customer Education a lot of the time. Your customers don’t always have an intrinsic motivation to learn how to use your product. They’re not all naturally curious about it, so you can’t design your content as if they are. And they don’t have an extrinsic motivation like grades. Unless your company has worked some provisions into the contract that if all their users don’t get certified, they don’t get to launch, or something like that, there’s no real motivation for them to struggle through bad training. Instead the burden is on you to move from the “sage on the stage” to the “guide on the side” How do you do that? Reduce the curse of knowledge - experts don’t remember what it was like to use the product on day one, so you have to gut check their assumptions, jargon, and things that seem basic to themGet constant feedback from customers about content and paceWorking interactivity into the training. Get them to reflect, speak up, ask questions, practice their skillsPausing for questions - what questions do you have instead of any questions?Measure the satisfaction of learners AND see if they’re doing what you trained them to do afterward Content development myth #2: The content-first approach So we’ve come up with a better model for how to structure interaction. But we still have to address another bad hypothesis -- the idea that if a training includes all the important content that a customer “needs,” then it is a more valuable training. https://www.pexels.com/@breakingpic

Alex Korb - The most common psychological disorder in America. It affects more than 1 in 10 Americans and is the cause of more than half of the suicides committed each year. More people suffer from this disorder than coronary heart disease, cancer, and HIV/AIDS...combined. It strains our healthcare system as we seek out treatments and cures. It affects every aspect of life and can leave sufferers feeling alone, isolated, misunderstood, and helpless. It is depression. Depression is the most common mental disorder in the United States. Its prevalence is often masked by the fact that sufferers don't always talk about it with family and friends. Further, there is prejudice against depression as a disorder, with some people even feeling that it isn't a real condition. Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you into a vortex of sadness, fatigue, and apathy. But there are ways to cope and recover. Depression is one of the most treatable of psychiatric illnesses. In our episode this week we speak with Neuroscientist Alex Korb, PhD. Alex is the author of the book The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time. Alex Korb, PhD, is a neuroscientist who has studied the brain for over fifteen years, starting with an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Brown University. He received his PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he wrote his dissertation and numerous scientific articles on depression. He is currently a postdoctoral neuroscience researcher at UCLA in the department of psychiatry. Outside of the lab, he is a scientific consultant for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, and is head coach of the UCLA Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. He has a wealth of experience in yoga and mindfulness, physical fitness, and even stand-up comedy. "The emotions that we experience are all in contrast to each other. The more capable you are of experiencing despair, the more you can experience joy." - Alex Korb Quotes from Alex: What we learn in this episode: What are some of the proven methods of improving depression? Why does anxiety and depression still exist? How have we not "evolved past" these types of destructive tendencies, behaviors, and characteristics? Does "shock therapy" work as an effective treatment for depression? What exactly is the nervous system? And is it possible to strengthen the nervous system?
