In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we examine the opening moves of the Ottoman Empire's war against Britain – a desperate, audacious campaign to seize the Suez Canal that has been largely forgotten but which revealed the fragility of the British Empire and the resilience of the Ottoman army.At the outbreak of the First World War, the Ottoman Empire saw itself surrounded by enemies: the British in Egypt, the Russians to the north, a hostile Habsburg Empire to the west, and a recently hostile Italy in the Mediterranean. The Young Turk government initially hoped to stay out of the war. But when they looked at Britain, France, and Russia, they saw voraciously hungry powers intent on dismembering their empire. Germany offered a security guarantee – unreliable, but the best available. The German High Command placed a high priority on cutting the Suez Canal. Between August and December 1914, 376 transport ships carried nearly 164,000 Allied troops through the canal. It was the vital artery connecting the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean – the lifeline of Britain's Asian empire. If the Ottomans could pinch it off, they could deal Britain a mortal blow and perhaps inspire a pan‑Islamic jihad against British rule. The man chosen to lead the attack was Cemal Pasha. In November 1914, he stood in Istanbul's central train station and publicly proclaimed his intention to conquer Egypt. The British dismissed his pledge as empty rhetoric. They did not believe he could raise an army large enough or cross the waterless, hostile Sinai desert. But Cemal assembled a heterogeneous, multi‑ethnic force – regular soldiers from the Arab provinces, volunteers from Bedouin, Druze, Circassian, Kurdish, Albanian, and even Jewish communities. He wrote to the Sharif of Mecca, Hussein ibn Ali, asking for troops under one of his sons. Hussein's son Ali went no further than Medina – a warning sign Cemal chose to ignore.Against all odds, Cemal's force marched across the Sinai in 12 days, losing neither a man nor a beast. They carried light rations of dates, biscuit, and olives, water carefully rationed, marching through the freezing nights and resting by day. British aerial surveillance initially failed to detect them – early aircraft lacked the range to reach central Sinai.By late January 1915, the British realised the impossible was happening. They withdrew all troops to the western shore of the canal, chained guard dogs on the east bank, and waited. The odds were stacked against the Ottomans – 25,000 attackers against 50,000 dug‑in defenders, backed by warships, armoured trains, and the canal itself. But Cemal had achieved surprise. What happened next would shape the course of the war in the Middle East.Drawing on Eugene Rogan's *The Fall of the Ottomans*, this episode explores the political context of the Ottoman decision to enter the war, the challenges of mobilising a multi‑ethnic army, the incredible logistics of the Sinai crossing, and the early use of aerial reconnaissance in desert warfare.**Topics covered:**- The Ottoman Empire's strategic dilemma in 1914- The alliance with Germany and the promise of jihad- The importance of the Suez Canal to the British war effort- Cemal Pasha and his public proclamation- The composition of the Ottoman expeditionary force- Sharif Hussein's reluctant cooperation- The 12‑day march across the Sinai- British aerial reconnaissance and its limitations- The defence of the canal: warships, armoured trains, and guard dogs- The moment of surprise before the attack---*If you enjoy the podcast, please consider supporting us – we are migrating from Patreon to Substack. Guest host Joe Cirincione interviews David Rothkopf. Rothkopf is the host of the Deep State Radio podcast. He is also Chief Global Affairs Columnist at the Daily Beast and was formerly the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine. He has taught at Columbia, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins universities. He was the Deputy Undersecretary of Commerce in the Clinton Administration and is the author of ten books including, most recently, Traitor: A History of Betraying America from Benedict Arnold to Donald Trump. His newsletter "Need to Know" is available at davidrothkopf.substack.com. Cirincione talks with Rothkopf about what he calls the unfolding catastrophe of Trump's war on Iran, arguing the U.S. has repeatedly failed in Southwest Asia and that this conflict has achieved neither tactical nor strategic objectives, while causing greater-than-reported damage to U.S. bases and eroding trust in military and government accounts. Rothkopf says the war has weakened U.S. alliances, empowered Iran, Russia, and China, and further damaged America's global standing, while also tying U.S. policy to an increasingly destabilizing Israeli government. The conversation then shifts to domestic consequences, with Rothkopf alleging Trump has monetized the presidency through pervasive corruption, including favors, pardons, and an IRS-related settlement he calls theft from the Treasury. Rothkopf remains hopeful but warns against complacency, argues accountability and progress are linked, and urges resistance ahead of 2026 elections.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bill interviews former Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander about his memoir, The Education of a Senator: From JFK to Trump, and the Senate's decline from bipartisan, amendment-driven lawmaking to today's gridlock. Alexander criticizes Republican senators for failing to check abuses of presidential authority, argues Trump's purges of GOP incumbents risk costing him a Senate majority, and calls a DOJ compensation fund for January 6 participants “Trump suing Trump” and an outrage, given assaults on Capitol Police. He contrasts Senate pushback in Trump's first term with silence in the second, including cuts affecting USAID/PEPFAR and NIH research. Alexander says January 6 undermined the Constitution, praises public service as the best way to help people, prefers being governor to senator, and expresses confidence in America's resilience. You can buy his book from Bookshop.org here. Bill Press interviews USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page about her book, "The Queen and Her Presidents," exploring how Queen Elizabeth II helped sustain the U.S.-U.K. “special relationship” through soft power over her 70-year reign. Page recounts the Queen's meetings with 13 sitting U.S. presidents (plus Herbert Hoover and pre-presidency LBJ), including Truman steadying a nervous young Princess Elizabeth; her reverence for Eisenhower; a complicated early dynamic with the Kennedys; LBJ's refusal to visit amid Vietnam tensions; Nixon's fascination with royal pageantry and his thwarted desire for a state dinner during Watergate; Reagan's bond with her over horses and later knighthood; the “talking hat” mishap with George H.W. Bush; Clinton-era distrust over British file searches; George W. Bush's teasing cowboy-boot moment; the Obama-Michelle protocol “touch” incident; and Trump pressing her about her favorite president. Page argues the Queen, highly briefed and shrewd, quietly smoothed crises (Suez, Ghana, Falklands) and preserved long-term ties.Get "The Queen and Her Presidents" book here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-queen-and-her-presidents-the-hidden-hand-that-shaped-history-susan-page/065fc3604a68c142?ean=9780063397392&next=tSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Piers Morgan covers the two rallies making headlines in Britain this weekend that both caused their fair share of controversy - plus some head-scratching over their turnouts. Tommy Robinson touted his Unite The Kingdom march as ‘the biggest event in British history' - police say about 50,000 attended - but it wasn't even the biggest event in London this weekend, given that 84,000 people went to the FA Cup final at Wembley. And there was some equally creative accounting going on a mile away at the rival march in support of Palestine. MP Zara Sultana said she was “proud to join 250 thousand people” at the Nakba rally, which police say was attended by 20,000. Piers Morgan is joined by The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur, Politics Joe's political editor Ava Santina, political commentator Don Keith, who was barred from entering the UK to attend Robinson's rally and Sintish, also known as Based & Bougie, who attended the Unite the Kingdom rally and had some choice words to say about Piers there… Then; former lieutenant colonel and spokesman for the IDF Jonathan Conricus is a regular on Uncensored - and for the first time joins us in our studios to debate British-Palestinian journalist and activist Kieran Andrieu on Gaza and Israel. Megyn Kelly is joined by Ana Kasparian, host and producer of "The Young Turks," to discuss the top Democrats in the California governor's race spiraling, Katie Porter taking wild shots at Tom Steyer, Xavier Becerra embarrassingly trying to avoid tough questions, Kennedy offspring loser Jack Schlossberg struggling to explain his actual qualifications and role as a “content creator,” backlash to his congressional campaign, the massive campaign against Thomas Massie, how powerful donors are targeting him over his stance on Israel and Epstein push, and more. Then Gregory Bovino, former Border Patrol Commander at Large, joins to discuss concerns the Trump administration is taking a softer approach now on deportations, shifting rhetoric from immigration officials since Bovino left his position, how Trump's deportation policy shifted after the Minnesota killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, why Bovino believes the administration backed off aggressive enforcement, why “self-deportations” are one of the most effective immigration enforcement strategies, how interior enforcement impacts border security, the role of E-Verify, and more. Two explosive reports have intensified global outrage over alleged sexual violence in the Israel-Hamas war. One investigation led by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Nick Kristof, details testimony from Palestinian prisoners alleging systematic sexual abuse by Israeli security personnel - claims Israel has fiercely denied as “blood libel.” The other, compiled by the Israeli Civil Commission into the October 7 attacks, documents harrowing allegations of sexual violence committed by Hamas, drawing on hundreds of interviews and thousands of photographs. Both reports echo findings from the United Nations - both have triggered furious backlash online and have become battlegrounds in a wider information war, where competing narratives shape what audiences choose to believe. At the heart of the debate is a question of basic human decency and whether atrocities are condemned consistently, regardless of who is accused. Piers Morgan is joined by US-Israeli journalist and commentator, Emily Schrader, former US Navy Seal Rob O'Neill, former IDF soldier and whistleblower Shaiel Ben-Ephraim, The Young Turks host Ana Kasparian, and former special forces commander in the IDF, Doron Kempel to debate. Then, In his first major interview since the failed EBay takeover attempt - CEO of Game Stop Ryan Cohen joins Piers to discuss the future of GameStop, the state of modern capitalism, and why his unconventional approach continues to captivate millions. Bill Press interviews psychologist Dr. John Gartner about a new ABC/Washington Post poll finding 59% of Americans believe Donald Trump is mentally unfit for the presidency and a physicians' letter urging Trump's lawful removal due to an unsanctioned war and his sole authority over nuclear weapons. Gartner argues Trump is a “malignant narcissist” with worsening frontotemporal dementia, claiming his disinhibition, tangential speech, confabulation, language errors, and loss of social context are increasingly visible, citing clips about “SEA” vs “SEE,” a Sharpie story, and graphic remarks to schoolchildren. He links Trump's self-glorification (coins, passports, building names, images as Pope/Jesus, a triumphal arch) to delusions of grandeur and warns of escalating war and possible first-use nuclear action, doubting political checks like the 25th Amendment or Senate conviction. Guest host Joe Cirincione talks with Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-VA), a new member of Congress sworn in last September to fill the late Rep. Gerry Connolly's seat, about his work on Oversight and Homeland Security. Walkinshaw says DOJ remains out of compliance with the Oversight subpoena for Epstein files and is violating the Epstein Files Transparency Act through illegal redactions; he wants answers from former Attorney General Pam Bondi about who ordered the redactions and any White House involvement, noting Committee Chair Comer chose a transcribed interview rather than a deposition. He also outlines Oversight inquiries into alleged DHS misconduct by Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski. Walkinshaw argues accountability and affordability are linked, condemns Trump's Iran war as unconstitutional under the War Powers Act, and warns a Supreme Court Voting Rights Act ruling could spur aggressive partisan redistricting and retaliation by Blue states.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Two Jewish men were stabbed last week in a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood in London - a shocking attack that, fortunately, did not end in tragedy. This is not an isolated incident. Across Europe and the United States, antisemitic violence is rising at an alarming rate. Antisemitism must be unequivocally condemned wherever it appears, just as all forms of political violence should be rejected without hesitation. At the same time, understanding the difference between legitimate criticism of Israel and hostility toward Jewish people is crucial - a line that is too often blurred in today's discourse. Political rhetoric from across the spectrum can inflame tensions and accusations of antisemitism are sometimes used to shut down debate rather than engage with it. Conflating Judaism with the actions of the Israeli government does not protect Jewish communities - it risks putting them in greater danger. Piers Morgan is joined by host of the Megyn Kelly Show, Megyn Kelly, former Republican candidate for Mayor of New York, Curtis Sliwa, correspondent-at-large for NewsNation, Geraldo Rivera, political commentator Adam Mockler, host of the Young Turks, Ana Kasparian, and conservative influencer Debra Lea to discuss. King Charles' US State Visit has sparked fresh debate about the relevance of the monarchy in the modern age. In just four days, the King appears to have helped repair the strained “special relationship” between Britain and the United States, achieving what many argue diplomats and politicians have struggled to do for years. The visit also comes amid ongoing tensions, following previous remarks by President Trump about the UK's leadership and military - raising questions about how the monarchy operates as a stabilising force beyond day-to-day politics. At the same time, Trump's own rhetoric and symbolism. From references to American identity to controversial gestures around power, have reignited conversations about leadership, tradition, and the role of institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. As discussions continue, one question remains: what does this moment say about the enduring influence of the monarchy and its place in a rapidly changing political world? Piers Morgan is joined by founder of Outkick!, Clay Travis, founder and CEO of The Young Turks, Cenk Uygur, Democrat strategist and host of Endless Urgency, Mike Nellis, co-host of The Verdict with Ted Cruz, Ben Ferguson, host of the Tara Palmeri Show, Tara Palmeri, and broadcaster and founder of The Blaze, Glenn Beck. Guest host Joe Cirincione fills in for Bill Press and interviews Mother Jones investigative journalist Tim Murphy about his cover story, “Power Hungry: How the AI Oligarchy Gobbled Up America.” Murphy describes how the post–ChatGPT AI race has driven a boom in hyperscale data centers—projects the size of Central Park that demand immense electricity, water, and even on-site power plants, sometimes pushing nuclear plants like Three Mile Island to reopen. He argues this “hyperscale” moment has narrowed and intensified U.S. oligarchy, fusing concentrated tech wealth with political power, including major 2024 election spending and alliances with Donald Trump. Murphy details disruptive impacts on rural communities, secrecy via shell companies and NDAs, fears of boom-and-bust “empty hulks,” and growing bipartisan local backlash raising questions about democracy, agency, and the future envisioned by AI leaders.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

He is now a lecturer at Yale University, the former president of the International Crisis Group, and the co-author with Hussein Agha of a new book, Tomorrow Is Yesterday: Life, Death, and the Pursuit of Peace in Israel/Palestine. They talk about the current U.S.-Israel war with Iran, arguing that while U.S. and Israeli military power is overwhelming, political objectives are unclear and Iran retains asymmetric capabilities, including disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Malley says Trump's public claims about Iranian concessions and battlefield success are unreliable and may fuel escalation, while reporting suggests Iran still has significant missile and small-boat capacity. He contends the war is unlawful, unnecessary, and economically disruptive, and that promised goals—destroying Iran's nuclear program, missiles, drones, or achieving regime change—have not been met and would not justify the war even if they had. Malley traces how Trump was encouraged by Netanyahu and others, but ultimately owns the decision, and argues diplomacy like the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) was the only approach that contained Iran's nuclear program. They discuss shifting Democratic opposition toward calling the war illegal, and Malley briefly connects these themes to his book Tomorrow Is Yesterday: Life, Death, and the Pursuit of Peace in Israel/Palestine. on Israel-Palestine and U.S. misunderstandings of what motivates other peoples. Bill talks with lawyer and former Clinton special counsel Lanny Davis about his book, Finding the Third Way, and the need to restore civility and “disagree agreeably” in U.S. politics. Davis recalls a Yale campus culture shaped by President Kingman Brewster that encouraged civil discourse and public service, even amid 1960s turmoil. He defines the “Third Way” as Bill Clinton's principled blend of social liberalism, fiscal conservatism (balanced budgets and responsibility), and cultural moderation, offering a positive alternative to Trumpism. Davis argues most Americans want civil politics, but extremes dominate, and Democrats must stand for affordability, fiscal discipline, and tolerance—especially within their own party—while rejecting lies, racism, and attacks on the Constitution. He predicts a potential realignment with disenchanted Trump voters and says Democrats need younger leadership after Biden's decision to run again. Bill hosts historian Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of a WWII trilogy and a new American Revolution trilogy, with two volumes out (The British Are Coming and The Fate of the Day) and a third he hopes to finish by 2031. Atkinson describes his archival research approach and argues the Revolution became an eight-year global war and an American civil war, turning especially brutal in the South. He highlights key turning points including Trenton/Princeton, Saratoga's role in bringing decisive French alliance, and French indispensability at Yorktown. He assesses Washington's early missteps and growth, Benedict Arnold's battlefield brilliance and festering grievances, Robert Morris's critical wartime financing, and women's essential roles. He discusses enslaved and Indigenous peoples' tragic outcomes, black participation on both sides, and concludes the Revolution's democratic aspirations remain unfinished and must be renewed to prevent future tyrannies. Bill speaks with CNN Legal Commentator and New York Times Opinion Writer, Jeffrey Toobin about major legal issues surrounding Donald Trump, including an executive order creating an anti-fraud task force targeting alleged Medicare and Medicaid fraud in Minnesota and California, which Toobin describes as an effort to embarrass Gov. Tim Walz while Trump simultaneously issues numerous pardons to wealthy fraud convicts. Toobin says pardons can erase restitution, citing an estimate that $1.5 billion in potential restitution has been wiped out, and argues Trump's presidential immunity and the Constitution's pardon power make such actions effectively unprosecutable. They discuss the Supreme Court's upcoming birthright citizenship arguments, with Toobin predicting a decisive loss for Trump based on the 14th Amendment's text. The conversation also touches on judges' responses to Trump's attacks and concerns about election integrity in 2026 and 2028, with Toobin cautiously optimistic due to state control of elections.Today Bill highlights the work of the American Civil Liberties Union. Bill interviews former DNC chair and Senate candidate Jaime Harrison about the midterms, arguing they're a chance to check Donald Trump by flipping the House and potentially the Senate. Harrison says Trump's push to restrict mail-in voting is hypocritical and would disenfranchise many voters, including military overseas. Harrison is bullish on Democratic prospects, comparing the cycle to 2006, citing GOP overreach, corruption, and strong Democratic special-election performance. He discusses countering GOP redistricting moves, candidate recruitment, and targeting Senate races in Georgia, Michigan (a concern due to a heated primary), Alaska (a “dark horse” with Mary Peltola), North Carolina (Roy Cooper), Texas, Ohio (Sherrod Brown), Maine, and Montana via an independent who would caucus with Democrats. He urges a message centered on affordability and healthcare, downplays fundraising gaps, and promotes his “Dirt Road Dems” PAC focused on rural organizing in the South.Today Bill reminds us that the best way to support Democrats financially is through ACTBlue.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bill discusses the third week of a U.S. and Israel-led war against Iran and Americans' cratering support for Israel, with J Street founder Jeremy Ben-Ami and senior VP Ilan Goldenberg. Ben-Ami calls it Netanyahu's long-sought war, notes the JCPOA(“The Iran Nuclear Deal” under Obama) had effectively constrained Iran's program, and says the current effort lacks clear goals. They highlight polling showing a sharp decline in U.S. support for Israel—especially among 18–34-year-olds—and criticize AIPAC's tactics and funding, urging Democrats to end “blank check” support, emphasize Palestinian rights, and pursue a balanced, pro-diplomacy approach. They also explored why the war began, where it may lead, and its political fallout. Goldenberg argues there was no imminent threat, diplomacy and other alternatives existed, and the U.S. lacked technical negotiators, leaving outcomes likely to resemble a long containment quagmire with higher oil prices and persistent regional instability. Today Bill highlights the work of J Street and suggests you check out their work at JStreet.org.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we return to Eugene Rogan's superb The Fall of the Ottomans to explore how military defeat and political crisis in the Balkan Wars transformed the Ottoman Empire from within—and set the stage for the birth of modern Turkey. It's remarkable how topical the story of a declining empire, seemingly in endless crisis, yet still capable of surprising its enemies, feels at this moment. But the Ottoman story is worth understanding on its own terms, not just as a mirror to our own times. We pick up the narrative in 1913, following the catastrophic First Balkan War in which the Ottomans lost most of their remaining European territories. The defeat of Edirne—a historic Ottoman city—triggered a political earthquake in Constantinople. The liberal government that had overseen the loss was overthrown, and when the Grand Vizier was assassinated in June 1913, the Committee of Union and Progress (the Young Turks) seized the opportunity to eliminate their opponents once and for all.The result was the emergence of a ruling triumvirate that would dominate the empire until its final collapse: Enver Pasha, Talat Pasha, and Cemal Pasha. More powerful than the Sultan himself, these men would lead the Ottoman Empire into the First World War and oversee both its greatest triumphs and its ultimate destruction. But 1913 also brought an unexpected gift. Bulgaria, aggrieved by the division of spoils after the First Balkan War, attacked its former allies—Greece and Serbia—sparking the Second Balkan War. With Bulgarian forces redeployed away from the Ottoman frontier, Enver Pasha seized his moment. Defying a cautious government, he led Ottoman forces back into Edirne, liberating the city on 9th July 1913 to national euphoria. The hero of the 1908 revolution became the liberator of Edirne, and the CUP gained unprecedented popular support.Yet this victory masked deeper problems. The same crisis that brought the Young Turks to power also intensified their centralising, Turkifying policies—measures that would alienate the empire's Arab provinces. Arabic was displaced from schools and courts, Turkish officials replaced experienced Arab civil servants, and demands for autonomy were met with police crackdowns.Eugene Rogan traces the emergence of Arabist societies, from Al-Fatah in Paris (which envisaged a dual Turco-Arab monarchy on the Austro-Hungarian model) to the Ottoman Decentralisation Party in Cairo. These organisations sought not independence but greater rights within the empire—a federal system, cultural autonomy, equal status with Turks. But the CUP, at the height of the Balkan crisis, was in no mood to compromise. When the Beirut Reform Society published a manifesto calling for administrative decentralisation in 1913, Ottoman authorities closed its offices and ordered it to disband. A week of strikes and protests ended with prisoners released—but the society never reopened. Arabism went underground, and with it, the possibility of holding the empire together through compromise and cooperation.Empires die, or they evolve. Those that lack the capacity to fend off external threats while accommodating internal diversity through assimilation, compromise, and cooperation—those are the ones that tend to die more rapidly. The Ottoman story is a lesson in what happens when a ruling elite, facing existential crisis, chooses centralisation over conciliation.Topics covered:The political fallout from the loss of EdirneThe assassination of Grand Vizier Mahmud Şevket PashaThe CUP's purge of liberal opponentsThe rise of the triumvirate: Enver, Talat, and Cemal PashaThe Second Balkan War and Bulgaria's fatal miscalculationEnver's recapture of Edirne and its propaganda valueThe emergence of Arabist societies and their demandsThe CUP's centralising, Turkifying policiesThe closure of the Beirut Reform SocietyThe shift from imperial to national identityExplaining History helps you understand the 20th Century through critical conversations and expert interviews. Bill Press examines two races that could shift U.S. politics: Texas's U.S. Senate contest and California's open governor's race. In Texas, reporter Maria Recio of The Austin American-Statesman, explains how state Rep. James Talarico beat Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary, citing his earlier start, stronger ground game, appeal to Latino voters, moderate and faith-based profile, and high Democratic turnout; the GOP nominee will be decided in a May 26 runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and AG Ken Paxton, with Trump's endorsement still uncertain and Paxton seen as more damaged by scandals. They discuss issues likely shaping 2026, including affordability, immigration enforcement conditions, and war. In California, Politico's Melanie Mason details the top-two “jungle primary,” warning Democrats that eight candidates could split votes enough to allow two Republicans to advance; current frontrunners include Katie Porter, Eric Swalwell, and wealthy spender Tom Steyer, amid few major endorsements. You can follow Melanie Mason's work at Politico.com/newsletters/californiaplaybookToday's Bill Press Pod is supported by The Ironworkers Union. Even when it wasn't part of my job, I've always broken news, breaking stories about the powerful and how the system is rigged against the powerless. Without trafficking in speculation or outrage-bait. Far too much of our journalism — from fringe to mainstream — is focused on feeding us info-bits that feel like they mean something (about what's going to happen, or who someone really is) but don't actually have any bearing on the material lives of everyday people. Until I was laid off in January 2024, I oversaw the original reporting of The Young Turks. Since then, I've been counting on reader support to continue breaking news here on Substack. (I also do an NSFW weekday-morning newsletter full of the kind of unabashed opinion-having that I make sure not to indulge in the reporting here on this Substack, because impartial journalism doesn't mean not having opinions it means being professional enough to ensure my reporting is intellectual honest.) Here's what one well-known political scientist has to say about my work: "Jonathan Larsen is a first rate investigative reporter … He just started a Substack. Subscribe! I did." — Norm Ornstein And here's Mr. Rather: "Jonathan is a first-rate, world-class professional… As a reporter, he's a deep-digger with an unrelenting dedication to fairness and accuracy." I'm obviously extremely lucky to have worked with the people I have. My ethos for journalism is that "evil" is a poor explanation for human behavior. That applies to everyone from muggers and presidents. I tend to reject simple and simplistic explanations for…why things are happening. People aren't perfectly logical, but anyone telling you that people are doing bad things because they're crazy or evil is selling you something you shouldn't be buying. A lot of big accounts out there rile everyone up and rack up likes by calling out people for being evil. My moral high ground isn't enough for me to make that my calling. So I focus on revealing destructive forces at work and crappy systems. And, yes, exposing the people responsible. It's my belief that elevation and illumination are how we get to a better place. I appreciate your support for these aspirations. And if that's too earnest and saccharine for you, you should probably subscribe to The Fucking News! The U.S. is now at war in Iran after Donald Trump launched strikes without Congressional authorization, despite campaigning against regime change and new wars. Rep. Jim McGovern (D) Massachusetts, argues there is no justification or clearly defined mission, warns of quagmire-like consequences, rising costs, and criticizes Republicans and House leadership for blocking debate and ignoring Congress's constitutional role and the War Powers Act, citing prior votes tied to Venezuela. National security analyst Joe Cirincione says the administration's claims of an imminent threat collapsed, asserting Iran lacks missiles to reach the U.S. and is not close to a nuclear weapon; he frames the conflict as a regime-change war pushed by Israel and Saudi Arabia, worsened by Trump's exit from the 2015 nuclear deal and bad-faith negotiations. They discuss risks including wider regional escalation, oil shocks, global recession, and damaged U.S. credibility.
