In this episode, we talk with Toby Smith about climate visuals. Toby explains what can make a photograph of climate change successful. He discusses ineffective old tropes, such as images of polar bears, to more effective photographs that allude to solutions or agency. Toby also describes the ethical considerations that went into setting up the Visualising Climate Change open call initiative, as well as the seven Climate Visuals principles. What you'll find inside: ‘Sadly a lot of the photography out there around climate can be really illustrative but it's not impactful, it's not landing with any emotional resonance.' (2.04)‘One of the nemesis' of my line of work is actually the polar bear. It's one of the images we associate most strongly with climate change but some of the research Climate Visuals does and social scientists and researchers and papers suggest that actually it's become a really ineffective, worn out, metaphor for climate change.' (2.47)‘How can we invite and give stage and presence to more participation? And that participation must be the kind of diverse voices and people that are often the frontline of climate.' (6.27)‘We need to balance that type of newsfeed and that type of emotional connection with climate solutions and positive stories, especially ones that… we feel able to have agency.' (9.23)‘Those principles should be something that should empower and give them extra resources in how they go about their practice but shouldn't at all impinge or overrule the different values and ethics systems that they might operate with their community.' (21.50)‘Anyone, of any age, anywhere in the world will be able to read an image and it's integrity instantly. It's a gut feeling.' (23.06) ‘Imagery showing climate change causes at an individual level - two examples I like to use are someone enjoying a steak dinner or someone firing up their gas-guzzling V8 sports car - these can actually have the effect of being quite accusatory, or quite individually pointy at certain people or cultures. And it actually gains a kind of defensive reaction from people which doesn't necessarily get the right traction. Whereas showing industrial agricultural feedlots or showing congested highways - people can see themselves in that image but they don't feel defensive as to their role within it so it's much more effective.' (23.50)‘It's really important we bust out of the green bubble. We need to think more about how we can engage with conservative audiences.' (26.57)What does photo ethics mean to Toby?‘I think to me, photography ethics, I can't narrow it down into a single part. To me the most important aspect, I feel personally, is around content production - partly because that is the foundation of where all photography comes from, is the lens in situation producing work. If the person holding that camera producing that work is engaging with their story and their subject matter with the right values and ethics then that's a great start, and sadly that sense of control or ethics of value can't always accompany an image as it floats off into it's distribution networks. But I feel like that's where we have to start, is the values and ethics of content production. And then maybe the other place to start is the value and ethics of content distribution, and somewhere in the middle there might be places in which we can exert some control for the right reasons.' Paradise Island Lighthouse, courtesy of Toby Smith. A lighthouse was built on Hog Island in 1817. The 68-foot-tall white brick tower with a red lantern stands at the island's western tip. It was the first lighthouse constructed in the Bahamas. It was built prior to the formation of the Imperial Lighthouse Service, the agency that was responsible for the navigational aids in the colonies of the British Empire. The lighthouse been abandoned since the 1980s and has fallen into disrepair. Toby Smith After eight years of waiting, Toby Smith of the Paradise Island Lighthouse and Beach Company was offered and accepted a lease of Crown Land in 2020. He aims to restore the lighthouse and to create a sustainable, low-impact beach club on the site, and to make the site accessible to all. The Climate Question
Does climate change have an ‘image problem'?

The Climate Question

Images are a key part of communicating climate change, and shape how we understand the crisis unfolding around us. But while lots of research has been done into the language we use to talk about climate, images are often left out of the conversation. As a result, over time, a limited set of images have come to dominate how we think of climate change – like polar bears and melting glaciers - which haven't kept up with the changing conversation about the crisis. All too often, these images tend to be abstract, removed from our daily lives and typically don't feature people - when we know that climate change is happening all around us, all the time, and is very much a story with people and communities at its core. So how can we develop a new, and more effective visual language for climate change? What kind of images ‘work' to both convey the urgency of the crisis as well as inspire behavioural change? And what are some of the ways in which photographers are seeking to represent the crisis in a way that transforms apathy into action? Episode 50 -  How the coffee industry will come out of COVID 19 with Julian Young from Toby's Estate  The story of Toby's Estate began in 1997, when coffee-loving lawyer Toby Smith made a life-changing decision, swapping legal books for coffee cups to follow his passion for his favourite brew. Travelling to some of the most remote corners of the globe, Toby lived amongst the coffee-producing communities, experiencing first-hand the lifelong dedication and hard manual labour that went into growing their exquisite beans. Fast forward to today and the coffee industry is one of the major suppliers of hospitality venues that would be more scared than most.  With cafes, coffee roasters and the coffee loving public nervous about the dramatic changes that have happened so quickly, I was very fortunate to talk with Julian Young who is the Sales Manager for Toby's Estate in SA/WA on where he sees his industry pivoting to to survive. In this episode we talk about: -How has the coffee industry changed from a supplier perspective in the last month? -How has Toby’s Estate pivoted the business since COVID-19? -Does he think the coffee culture is at risk in Australia with the drop in the supply? -Does he believe coffee sales will go down worldwide with cafes being shut? Toby's Estate are doing some cool things online at the moment, so please make sure you check them out here: https://www.instagram.com/tobysestatecoffee/ https://www.tobysestate.com.au/ As always, please make sure you check us out on Instagram, or visit our website so more information on what we do: https://www.instagram.com/open_pantry_consulting/ https://www.openpantryconsulting.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/principle-of-hospitality/message

To kick things off I'm really happy to share with you a conversation I had with Toby Smith – an award-winning environmental photographer, and Programme Lead for Climate Visuals. We talk about how visual storytellers can better document and represent the issue of climate change, in the hope of addressing the political and general inertia that exists to taking the significant and meaningful action that is so desperately needed. We also talk about Toby's work as a photographer and his many years of experience exploring long term projects include a study of hydroelectricity in Scotland, renewable energy technology across China and India, illegal logging and mining in Madagascar, and documenting water scarcity across the Himalayas – to name but a few. He works internationally on personal, commissioned and collaborative projects concerning landscape, the environment, and industrial and science-related stories. Chiefs coach Colin Cooper has denied claims that his dressing room is split after their horror start to the Super Rugby season. The side has struggled with handling errors and defensive lapses in the early season, finding themselves without a win through the first four rounds. And while their season appears to be on life support, Cooper has denied claims that the losing streak is affecting the dressing room."We work really hard on feedback and we've got good leaders in the group that will keep tapping in with us as coaches and making sure that we're all aligned and in the same waka," he told Radio Sport.Despite his leadership coming into question, Cooper said the team still had the belief they would be playing in the post-season. Flanker Mitchell Brown echoed that and said the players had to take the blame for their poor start."I think he's probably unfairly copping a lot of the blame," Brown said of the criticism Cooper had been receiving."At the end of the day it comes down to the players on the field and how we perform so we've just got to go out there and do our jobs."Looking to upset the high-flying Hurricanes in Hamilton this week, the Chiefs have made several changes to their squad, including moving Damian McKenzie from first five-eighth to fullback.McKenzie's brother, Marty, will don the No 10 jersey in his first appearance of the season, while young gun winger Etene Nanai-Seturo has been demoted to the bench with Ataata Moeakiola joining the starting side. The Chiefs had 13 players unavailable for selection for Friday night's match, including three of their five contracted first five-eighths. As a result, they won't be carrying a back-up first five-eighth on the bench so Damian McKenzie could be in line to slot into the role late in the match. They'll host a strong Hurricanes side who will be looking for an improved performance from the set piece, with experienced props Toby Smith and Ben May given the starting roles in the front row alongside Dane Coles.Chiefs: Damian McKenzie, Sean Wainui, Tumua Manu, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ataata Moeakiola, Marty McKenzie, Brad Weber, Tyler Ardron, Mitchell Karpik, Mitchell Brown, Michael Allardice, Brodie Retallick, Nepo Laulala, Nathan Harris, Aidan Ross.Reserves: Samisoni Taukei'aho, Ryan Coxon, Angus Ta'avao, Taleni Seu, Luke Jacobson, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Alex Nankivell, Etene Nanai-Seturo.Hurricanes: Chase Tiatia, Jordie Barrett, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Wes Goosen, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Ardie savea, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Reed Prinsep, Vaea Fifita, James Blackwell, Ben May, Dance Coles, Toby Smith.Reserves: Asafo Aumua, Fraser Armstrong, Alex Fidow, Liam Mitchell, Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, Finlay Christie, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Salesi Rayasi
