John is a marketing enigma, a “direct response customer attraction expert” who thinks way outside the box. His marketing consultancy business is called The Institute Of Wow – & John's mantra is that one's marketing needs to “wow” prospects. He's also the guy who shocked the marketing world some years back when he convinced Jerry Seinfeld to come out of retirement to be the spokesman for an Australian banking institution, The Greater Building Society. Jerry headed up a “free vacation campaign” which broke home loan lending records and remains folklore in the global banking industry…..people received a “free vacation” when they got a home loan. This was probably one of the most successful “incentive-promotions” in the world, resulting in many BILLIONS of dollars in extra home loans. John helps business owners understand how to exploit platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn by implementing “incentive-based marketing offers” that can be targeted specifically to certain audiences. His client list reads like a Who's Who of business and includes the likes of Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd, 7 Eleven, Westfield Shopping Centres, Walt Disney, KFC and BP to name a few. Such companies have used his skills because they acknowledge he is “the master of creating incentives that work.” He has created done-for-you “customer incentive packages” that businesses can plug & play – including “extraordinary customer rewards” like Fuel Savings & Free Vacations. When it comes to “unique marketing concepts” that attract an avalanche of new clients for businesses, John certainly delivers. In it, he takes aim at media moguls around the world who use their influence for their own ends. A major focus is the Murdoch family. Beecher has gone from working for Rupert Murdoch and selling a business to what was then News Ltd, to being an influential critic of the company and being unsuccessfully sued for defamation by Lachlan Murdoch. The conversation also covers the imperfection of the industry-funded Australian Press Council (“the lesser of evils”) his views on the sort of public interest journalism that deserves to be publicly funded (“It's about scrutinzing power and government. I do not believe it includes lifestyle journalism”) and what's likely to happen in the Murdoch family's new succession battle.Beecher describes the unregulated influence of owning a media company as “the loophole in democracy”.We talked to Private Media CEO Will Hayward last year:Unmade Index slide endsThe Unmade Index recovered slightly yesterday after its drops of 3.6% and 1.2% to start the week. [00:55] How James Swanwick Helps People Feel Better By Quitting Alcohol In 30 days of not drinking, James lost 13 pounds, slept better, looked better, and got a job on ESPN. After 30 days, James decided to stop drinking altogether; that was 12 years ago. Now that he doesn't drink, he has created a business to help people sleep better and to help people stop drinking. Even a seemingly innocent glass of alcohol each night has detrimental effects on your life. Any amount of alcohol each night is enough to cause brain damage. [07:10] Saying No To Peer Pressure and Alcohol Consumption The social pressure to drink is high. However, it is becoming lower. There is a worldwide movement of people becoming alcohol conscious. Millennials have never drunk less in their entire life. In fact, alcohol has a real image problem at the moment. Remember, 93% of all communication is body language. Go through life being open and relaxed; that way, people don't harass you to drink. [15:05] Do You Struggle With Instant Gratification? Get Rid of Temptations An alcohol buzz is a short-term pleasure. We should look at our life and make long-term choices. Long-term pleasure is so much more pleasurable and rewarding. We all have to sacrifice something; should we sacrifice short-term rewards for long-term enjoyment? James will sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain. The choices that you made six years ago can pay off today. [19:20] Is It Possible To Drink Alcohol and Get A Good Night's Sleep? Any amount of alcohol close to bedtime is going to disrupt your sleep. When you're tired, you tend to seek out sugary foods to give yourself an energy spike. You are better off having alcohol for breakfast than at nighttime. That way, your body can work on getting rid of toxins during the day. There is a direct correlation between alcohol drinking and weight gain. Also, alcohol will destroy energy levels. [23:40] What A Lack of Sleep Is Doing To Your Body and Mind When you are tired, you are miserable. While on the other hand, when you sleep well, everything feels so much better. If you want to feel better, you need to put a premium on your sleep. Don't drink alcohol at night, don't eat before bedtime, and don't look at screens before bedtime. Sleeping above 69 degrees is compromising your sleep. When we have compromised sleep, we are not repairing and restoring. Putting a high focus and premium on optimizing your sleep is critical. [29:30] Ditch Artificial Light and Live By Candlelight During The Night Any artificial light at night compromises your sleep. Light will suppress your body's melatonin release. Blocking artificial light is imperative to ensure you have a good night's sleep. The best thing you can do at night is to live by candlelight. Flame does not suppress your body's melatonin production. [35:40] Why You Need Both Clear Lens Glasses and Orange Lens Glasses Clear lens blue light-blocking glasses will filter blue light and are recommended for daytime computer use. At nighttime, you should switch to orange lens blue light-blocking glasses to ensure you block all the blue light responsible for suppressing melatonin production. Orange lens glasses will help you sleep better for nighttime use. You need both daytime glasses and orange lens glasses. [39:25] Gratitude Changes Your Brain: Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier James will write down twenty things he is grateful for each morning. Science shows that living a life of appreciation instead of expectation will result in lower stress and anxiety levels. It can be challenging to think of 20 things each morning. However, you will realize how many things you must be grateful for. What you feed energy to will expand. AND MUCH MORE! Will David Eustace be granted a licence to train in Hong Kong next season? News Ltd journalist Tom Biddington says the rumours are strong that he may be on the move in 2024.
Roll up! Roll up! It's the greatest show in town! Well, the Wests Tigers certainly remains a circus with our Chairman being one of the main ring leaders. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, we address the unprofessional and unwarranted criticism of our pod and petition in the News Ltd. press. A story that seemed to be propagated by Wests Tigers Chairman Lee Hagipantelis, we've been singled out as being divisive and setting back the prospects of Benji Marshall and the team in season 2024. Why? Because we asked our fellow Wests Tigers fans to support our calls for a review of the administration and governance of the Wests Tigers. The majority shareholders of the club, the Holman Barnes Group, agreed that answers needed to be found and launched that review. Hit play or download to hear our response to the latest developments. There are plenty of other topics to discuss as well. We take a look at the re-signing of Starford To'a until the end of 2026. Was it a good move to give Starford another two years on his contract? What was the thinking behind this decision? Speaking of centres, reports suggest Bradman Best might be on the Tiger's radar with the club allegedly ready to hand over $800,000 a season for the Knights and Blues centre. A good move, we put that under the microscope. Declan and Garry weigh in on the loss of young half Alex Conti to the Bulldogs. Is it another disaster in the making? And the proposal to move the Wests Tigers to a brand new 20,000-seat stadium is also on the agenda of the latest edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does classic Australian comedy The Castle (1997) have to do with The Chosen? This episode, as Laura explained. PLUS: Jesus gets proper angry, and Simon and Eden FINALLY talk. Oh, so do Tamar and Mary. That conversation got Ben reflecting on his own guilt and forgiveness. The best and worst of The Chosen – in one episode. TV/film reviewers and Chosen fans Laura Bennett and Ben McEachen disagree about the first half of Season 3's Episode 3, Physician Heal Yourself. Ben was distracted and eye-rolling about some creative choices, such as Jesus playing sports – badly – and sheep called Cain and Abel. But Laura pointed out that such everyday elements helped the "I am the Messiah" impact of the memorable second half. #FollowingTheChosen gets up close and personal with every Chosen episode in Season 3, exploring the Bible bits, added bits and "what's that about?" bits. Imagine Jesus himself told you to go and do... as he does... including heal the sick, cast out demons and proclaim a way of life that every single person DOES NOT live up to. "Two by Two" hinges on an amazing sequence where Jesus sends out his disciples. This week Sandy chats with Dr Susie O'Brien in the confessional, a delightful journalist and columnist with a PhD in Education. For the last 19 years she has written about parenting and social issues for the Herald Sun and other News Ltd papers, and she appears weekly on Channel Seven's Sunrise. She and her partner have five (yes, 5!) kids between them. Susie says they're the Brady Bunch, without Alice to cook dinner every night!Susie chats about her fabulous book The Secret of Half-Arsed Parenting: Raising kids with half the guilt. The Secret of Half-arsed Parenting is a funny and practical antidote to the extreme stress ofmodern parenting. It pokes fun at the unrealistic goals and expectations thrust on parentstoday. Parents don't need any more thrusting - it's how we got into this mess in the firstplace. The Secret of Half-arsed Parenting offers a way to raise kids with less pressure, less guilt, less stress and fewer cupcakes baked at midnight. It's not about doing a bad job. It's about recognising that parents don't have to be perfect. What's wrong with toasted sandwiches for dinner? Kids sharing rooms and bathrooms? Saying “no” once in a while? The key is to know your limits and set the bar low enough so you succeed. As Susie sees it,if your friends judge you for not baking cupcakes from scratch or wearing slippers to schoolpick-up, get new friends (and slippers that look like shoes). As Susie says: “As a Half-arsed Parent, I don't care about ‘retaining my sensuality' and‘finding my femininity'. Welcome to the latest edition of the Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another free extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. One of the things I was fascinated to learn in researching Media Unmade was the atmosphere in Kim Williams' big office in News Corp's Holt Street headquarters the day he told his team he was leaving. He may have earned the opposition of the company's editors, but his inner circle were true believers. Until I wrote the book, I don't think it was in the public domain that Williams had wept when he told his team the news. On as an emotional and tiring day as that, there's no shame there.Even now, I can't make up my mind whether the company would be in a stronger position if Williams had been able to see through his restructuring, or whether his challenge to state-based autonomy would have wiped out local advertising in the long term. This chapter also covers the 2013 stock split that saw News Ltd become News Corp Australia, and the creation of 21st Century Fox. As I wrote in Unmade yesterday, the split, which was lucrative for shareholders, was an example of Rupert Murdoch's deal making genius. It was a busy time for News Corp. Michael Miller left. Lachlan Murdoch returned. Miller came back. Then there were the shenanigans after the NRL left Foxtel out in the cold. When News Corp goes to war with someone it really goes to war with someone.Unmade Index - down againThe second day of the Unmade Index saw Australia's media and marketing stocks take another battering.Yesterday saw another 2.3% wiped off the value of the ASX-listed media and marketing companies.HT&E was the only company to improve its share price, while real estate platform Domain Group slumped 6.5% as speculation grows of a slowdown in the property market. Ooh Media's market capitalisation fell below $1bn, while Southern Cross Austereo is now trading close to its lowest point in a year.Today's audio chapter of Media Unmade is free to all subscribers. Some future chapters will only be available only to paying subscribers to Unmade. The paid tier is available from $65 per month. If you enjoy hearing it, please do give it a five star rating on whichever podcasting app you use. That helps other people find it, and gives me some much needed validation.Audio production on Media Unmade comes courtesy of Abe's Audio, the people to talk to about voiceovers and sound design for corporate videos, digital content, commercials and podcasts. As ever, I welcome your thoughts to letters@unmade.media, or via the ugly brown comment button below.Time to let you go about your Friday. Michael has had parenting segments on The Project, The Today Show, Weekend Sunrise, ABC radio and more. He has contributed to Huff Post, Kidspot and Mamamia, and is a former columnist with both News Ltd and Fairfax newspapers. What we talk about Our recent survey of over 300 Australians revealed that parents do 33% more life admin than those without kids, and they are twice as likely to struggle for time. During the interview, we chat with Michael about: how parents often underestimate what their kids can do by up to three years that we should never regularly do for our kids what they are capable of doing for themselves that kids want more autonomy and independence that as family sizes have shrunk we know more about each of our children, and so we give them less space to become more independent being aware of developing independence and providing small opportunities for kids to feel and be useful starting where your kids are at and pushing them along over time developing a 'junior version of the game' (eg like Auskick for AFL) for life admin and housework and setting the standards based on their age and stage that we need to not rescue kids so they can learn from their experience accepting what kids do as a reasonable standard if they have tried their best that pocket money is a great way to increase autonomy and independence and you can start from age 5 deciding what your benchmark will be in your family for handing over responsibility for a task (eg when they make their own lunch) thinking about sharing the 'jobs and the joy' and wealth within your family using a roster to allocate chores to create the sense that the roster is creating the “ask” rather than the parents when kids start asking for more independence we can look at ways that we can make it happen by giving them the skills they need to do at least part of the task pets are great to teach kids what it is like to have someone else reliant on them thinking less about the amount of time that kids are spending on screens and more on what they are consuming and what the opportunity cost is (what else could they be doing) teenagers need parents who will challenge them that gender and birth order can create different expectations girls are often more organised at a younger age and boys may need more coaching, due to the way the brain develops differently between the genders firstborns tend to be more detail-orientated and introverted there are three aspects to consider when parenting - a child's genetics & temperament, birth order and the family frame that sets the landscape for everything else. President Joe Biden has asked the US intelligence community to investigate the possibility Covid-19 leaked from a virology lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan. We all know the virus came from Wuhan, but we don't know if it began in a wet market and was innocently passed from animals to humans – OR if it was a virus experiment that went wrong. Sharri Markson, the News Ltd columnist and Sky News host has written a book on the Wuhan Lab theory and says the evidence points to it being a leak from the lab. How powerful is the argument that the virus began at the Wuhan lab? What are the alternative theories…? And will we ever learn the truth….? Thursday 8 April is the anniversary of the 1995 meeting in Wigan when British rugby league agreed with Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd to switch to a summer Super League. It was part of the biggest revolution rugby had seen since 1895. Not only was rugby league changed forever, but rugby union was forced to embrace open professionalism. This week's 'Rugby Reloaded' examines the birth of Super League in Britain, looks at rugby union's dash for cash, and assesses the legacy of those dramatic days for the British game. For more on the history of rugby and the other football codes, take a look at www.rugbyreloaded.com (where you can find the links for this episode) and follow me on Twitter at @collinstony
ScoMo's bad week got worse when he had to apologise to News Ltd for overreach, while the ABC complains that he won't volunteer himself to be slain on 730 (so at least he's learned something as PM). Why does the US Treasury Secretary want to increase global company tax? And another product is in the woketavists' firing line. But which one?
No US president has been more media focused than President Trump. And likewise, no US president has consistently dominated global news cycles like President Trump. While most Australians watch the US presidential election from afar, intrepid Aussie journalists have spent the year in the epicentre of American political drama: Washington. How does the 2020 election compare to others? How do the candidates campaign and how do you cover them during a pandemic? What aspects of campaign journalism have changed forever? To discuss these issues, the USSC hosted a webinar event with three Australian correspondents in Washington: Cameron Stewart of The Australian, Jacob Greber of The Australian Financial Review, and Matthew Knott of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in a conversation with former ABC Washington Bureau Chief, Zoe Daniel. Cameron Stewart is an Associate Editor and Washington Correspondent for The Australian. This is his eighth US presidential election since he started with the paper and he is working in Washington DC during this pandemic. His investigative reporting covers foreign affairs, defence and national security and he also writes features for the Weekend Australian Magazine and is a regular contributor for Sky News. Jacob Greber is The Australian Financial Review's United States correspondent, based in the paper's Washington bureau, where he's been since mid-2018. He was previously the AFR's economics correspondent in Canberra (2012-2018) and has worked as a journalist for more than 24 years in Australia, Europe and the US, including stints at Bloomberg News and News Ltd. Matthew Knott is North America correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He moved to the US in 2017 to study political journalism at Columbia University in New York. He has travelled to 19 states across America, including recent trips to the battleground states. He has also covered the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. The former federal political reporter was previously based in Parliament House, Canberra. While there he won the Wallace Brown Award for best young reporter in the press gallery. Zoe Daniel was the ABC’s US bureau chief in Washington from December 2015 until December 2019. She was the ABC's South East Asia correspondent from 2009 - 2013 and Africa correspondent from 2005 until 2007. Zoe co-hosted the international news program The World on News 24 and Australia Plus. Zoe is the author of Storyteller, which provides a personal insight into her life as a foreign correspondent, as well as juggling a family.

The News Ltd papers didn't attack Bill Shorten's mum - they celebrated her achievements. And they were significant. But Bill downplayed her career for his own political purposes and scored a win against Murdoch in the process.
In a media environment crowded with polemicists and opinionators, George Megalogenis is something of an outlier. His commentary is relentlessly, rigorously – and somehow compellingly – even-handed. An award-winning, veteran journalist who served for many years as a senior feature writer at News Ltd, his analysis of Australian political, economic and demographic history is indispensable. Megalogenis has been described by Annabel Crabb as ‘Australia’s best explainer’ and in recent years he’s applied that gift to the medium of documentary, writing and presenting two acclaimed ABC productions: Making Australia Great and Life Wasn’t Meant to Be Easy. Megalogenis is still writing books, too. For his most recent, Australia’s Second Chance, he looked back to 1788, tracing our political and economic history and crunching the numbers to present a narrative of resilience, missed opportunity and latent potential. Megalogenis joins Sally Warhaft to discuss his latest book, his body of work and the challenges and freedoms of working across television and print media. If Australian politics and public policy debates are a war of ideas, the National Press Club (NPC) is the battleground. For the past half-century, the NPC has been the epicentre of political and social debate in Australia. Leaders and opinion-makers have used its stage to launch leadership bids, rattle the cage of public opinion with courageous and sometimes outrageous ideas, and make a stand. Stand & Deliver author Steve Lewis joins political historian Frank Bongiorno in conversation to discuss some of the NPC's most powerful, controversial and entertaining speeches of the past fifty years. Steve Lewis has been reporting politics in Canberra since 1992 and has survived the near collapse of the Fairfax media group, three prime ministers, Mark Latham and a career switch from The Financial Review to the News Ltd tabloids. Steve now writes freelance and works for Newgate Communications. Associate Professor Frank Bongiorno is an Australian labour, political and cultural historian who teaches at the ANU.
