Udana Vayu is the upward-moving, ascending and radiant life-force from the top of the heart and base of the throat. As it is active primarily in the region between the heart and the head, it is said to bring Prana from the energy centre, Anahata Chakra through Vishuddha Chakra to Ajna Chakra, which directs the flow of Prana from the lower to the higher planes of consciousness manifesting a hearts desire as it creatively expresses itself and influences awakening. This Vayu is also responsible for taking the mind from waking to sleep, from sleep to dreaming and then to deep dreamless sleep -Turya – to higher planes of existence. When we focus a mindful concentration in practice on Udana Vayu the results leave us feeling connected, balanced and strong, we stand tall with integrity. Our presence when Udana Vayu is flowing we are joyous, enthusiastic, alert, articulate, and we have epiphanies, insights, revelations and visions.This meditation will use the tool Jaladhara Bandha to help trace the movements Udana Vayu and Mudras to seal in the Prana around the space between the heart and the head. Verbal chanting of OM and mental chanting of SO HUM and HUM SA will be used to connect to the vibration and pulse of Prana in this area. Kriya practices will also be used to actively clear the physical and subtle pathways for Prana to heal, transform and inspire the student to benefit from focusing on Pran, Apana, Vyana and Samana Vayus and how Udana Vayu relates to this Pranic movement. Success in Bhakti is based on atma-samarpan In the previous verses, Shri Krishna mentioned the various yogas, austerities, penances etc that spiritual aspirants practice, and how success in all of them was based on personal will power. And then Shri KRishna explained the difference between them and Bhakti Yoga where the success is based on surrender (atma-samarpan) and directing our senses towards Bhagavan.  Here, he describes the various pranayama practices done by yogis as a means to attain liberation.  Prana is often mistaken to be the same as breath, but this isn't accurate. Prana means ‘life force'. By learning to control our breathing, we can gain control over our life force and its activities within us. When we look closely, we see that the scriptures use Prana to describe different aspects of life within a living body. It's the energy that runs the different systems within us. Typically, there are five types of Pranas highlighted, which actually refer to five fundamental bodily functions. The Prana that controls perception and enables us to interact with the world around us is called "Prana" itself. It governs the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and allows for the intake of substances, such as food and air. The function of excretion is overseen by "Apana," which regulates the elimination of waste from our body. It's like the waste management system of the body, involved in processes like urination, defecation, and menstruation. The digestive function, responsible for breaking down food and assimilating nutrients, is governed by "Samana" It regulates the digestion and distribution of energy derived from the food we consume. The circulatory system, which carries nutrients throughout the body, is maintained by "Vyana". It's the force that facilitates the circulation of energies, ensuring that the nutrients from our food reach every corner of our body. Lastly, the Prana that oversees our ability to grow and enhance our mental and intellectual life is "Udana". This is the energy that moves upwards and aids in conscious actions such as speech. It is also said to play a role in the functioning of the memory, thought process, and emotions. Most people aren't consciously aware of these inner life activities. But through Pranayama, a breathing technique, we can gain control over these systems. This means that a seeker, or someone on a spiritual path, can use Pranayama to withdraw his senses and focus inward. This ability to focus inward is particularly helpful when meditating. Breathing consists of four parts: Pūrak — the process of drawing the breath into the lungs. Inhaling. Rechak — the process of emptying the lungs of breath. Exhaling.  Antar Kumbhak — holding the breath in the lungs after inhalation.  Sacrifice through PranayamaBāhya Kumbhak — keeping the lungs empty after exhalation.

The question asked here was- In the path of sadhana while doing the kriya yoga, when the kechari mudra was practiced, it seemed to give results but later there was not much progress. How can one take it forward and progress? Om Swami says that the kechari mudra is a part of Tantra yoga, kriya yoga and knowledge. In the yoga shastras and some other texts this has been mentioned. This is done by rolling the tongue backwards and placing it into the cavity above the throat. This was done by either pulling and elongating the tongue slowly over months or by cutting the frenulum and applying salt on it to keep it from joining again. Om Swami says that the real meaning of kechari mudra was to be in control of the different airs(vayu) circulating in the body. A person who has control over Prana, Vyana, Udana, Samana and Apana vayu(airs) is said to have attained mastery in the kechari mudra. Om Swami says that instead of doing the kechari mudra it is much more important to get mastery over one's posture. When one can bring about stillness in their physical posture and stillness in their mind and in their speech then automatically they will have stillness in thoughts too. Not only while we are awake, through the senses, but also when we are asleep, through the Pranas and the mind.  Prashnopanishad Chapter 4 Mantra 3 described that Apana is Garhapatya fire, Prana is the Ahavaniya fire and Vyana is the Anvahaarya-pacana.  Mantra 4 says that Samaana Prana distributes equally the oblations of the inspiration and expirations, he is the priest.  The mind is the sacrificer or Yajaman and Udaana Is the fruit of the sacrifice. RESPIRAÇÃO E SEUS VAYUS - RESUMO Resumindo, podemos dizer que o prana regula a absorção de substâncias; o samana regula a digestão; o vyana a circulação; o udana a liberação da energia positiva dessas substâncias; e o apana, a eliminação dos resíduos que elas possam deixar. Para terminar de entender esse mecanismo, pense no corpo como se fosse uma máquina: o prana absorve o combustível; o samana transforma o combustível em energia; o vyana faz circular essa energia onde a máquina estiver trabalhando; apana libera os detritos; e o udana administra a energia positiva criada no processo e determina o trabalho que a máquina está capacitada para fazer. A chave para a saúde e o bem-estar é manter os cinco vayus em harmonia. Quando um deles está em desequilíbrio, os outros tendem a entrar em desequilíbrio também, já que estão todos interligados. De modo geral, prana e udana trabalham juntos, opondo-se ao apana como forças de assimilação e energização que são contrários à força de eliminação. Today we are lucky to receive a transmission from Vyana Ma on the Rising Women Leaders Podcast. Vyana is another soul sister I first met through the world of instagram where we soon connected, met in person, and I learned of her work as an energy medicine teacher, devotee, musician and activist.  I sat down to speak with her a couple months ago for the podcast when she had just come back from a bhakti yoga immersion in Mexico and was making a plan to travel to Standing Rock.   I re-listened to this episode on my birthday in the bathtub and as soon as I heard her soothing voice, I knew there was no where else I would rather be.
