Is turning 50 the new beginning you've been waiting for? Join us as we explore this exciting milestone and the possibilities it brings for personal reinvention and artistic growth. We dive into a lively conversation inspired by our listener, Brittany Clifford, who is contemplating a move from New York's art scene to Miami's vibrant landscape. Learn how to establish a new creative community by attending local gallery openings, connecting with fellow artists, and leveraging the power of social media.Trusting your instincts is an art in itself, and we reflect on how spontaneity can lead to stunning creations. Inspired by William Blake's wisdom, "First thought is best in art," we recount studio stories where improvisation led to unexpected brilliance, like a serendipitous moment with resin and pink wood shards. We also share a moving encounter with Dana James' painting, underscoring the profound emotional impact and transformative beauty art can hold. This episode shines a light on the works of Dana and Jonathan Todryck, celebrating their artistic journeys and continuous pursuit of innovation.Gratitude plays an essential role in nurturing creativity, and we draw inspiration from Nietzsche to emphasize its importance in the artistic process. Hear our personal anecdotes on how simple habits like journaling and meditation can foster a positive mindset and clear mental clutter. We'll guide you through the significance of "soul care," offering insights on maintaining creativity amidst life's demands. Whether you're an artist on a similar journey or someone seeking inspiration, this episode promises a heartfelt discussion on art, gratitude, and the joy of creating.Check out:Brittany Clifford's artDana James artJonathan Todryk's artSend us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

The human body is one of the most complex systems on the planet, and not all bodies are the same. Anyone who has struggled on a diet knows that what works for someone else may not work for you. We all have a unique body chemistry that needs to be addressed differently, and, without considering the hidden factors that may be affecting our ability to lose weight, we will continue to struggle. This is what Functional Medicine is all about: looking beyond the basics to determine what is right for each individual. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Dana James, a triple certified nutritionist, Functional Medicine practitioner, and cognitive behavioral therapist. She takes a rare approach to women’s weight loss by putting self-worth at the center of the conversation. She has been featured in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Forbes, Vogue, Elle and Goop and offers a unique perspective on physical body and mind integration. In this episode, Dhru and Dana talk about how you can alter your diet to help feed your unique body chemistry while simultaneously examining how your sense of self-worth shapes your behaviors—including what you eat—in ways that may be working against your goals. They also talk about how the weight loss equation of “calories in, calories out” is inadequate, and how other factors, such as hormones, sleep, inflammation, the gut microbiome, unexpressed emotions, and genes all influence your ability to lose weight and keep it off.In this episode, we dive into:-The connection between unexpressed emotions and weight loss (2:43)-How subconscious beliefs inform our eating and our weight (7:53)-The social stigma around weight gain and obesity (11:47)-The Nurturer Archetype (18:26)-The Wonder Woman Archetype (22:56)-The Femme Fatale Archetype (34:51)-The 3-R reprogramming process (41:51)-The Ethereal Archetype (42:24)-The importance of personalization when it comes to diet (50:17)-Body acceptance (54:45)-Stress reduction techniques (56:18)-Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) (1:01:48)-Societal pressure around weight loss and body image (1:05:12)-Visceral fat and chronic disease (1:11:40)-Learn more about Dana and her work (1:13:20)For more on Dana James, be sure to follow her on Instagram @danajames and check out her website https://danajames.com and https://foodcoachnyc.com. When Dana James first began studying nutrition, she looked at the link between food and skin — and found it really boring. Instead, she was drawn toward the mental health aspect of nutrition and weight management, the ways in which our particular psychologies shape how and what we eat. This interest led her to study cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and functional medicine along with nutrition, and to develop a model of four female archetypes, each of which has a distinct body shape and relationship with food. As she dug into the ways that women eat — her focus is on weight management for women — she began to see patterns. Out of these patterns, she developed the four archetypes, each of which has a distinct way of approaching food; through these archetypes, she hopes to “help women really understand themselves.” Each of the four archetypes gets their sense of self-worth from a different source, and their characteristics, eating habits, and even body shape all stem from that. Listen to this fascinating episode to figure out which of the 4 archetypes you are, learn more about the microbiome-mental health connection (did you know gut bacteria is affected by trauma?), why the same food will be better for you when prepared by a loved one vs. a stranger, how chakras and the color spectrum play into nutrition, and much more. She was SO spot on about us when we filmed this! Dana's book The Archetype Diet was created for women who want to reclaim their self worth for good.   With over two decade's worth of clinical experience between these women, treating patients in their respective private practices, you'll get lots of practical tips on how to drastically improve your mental and physical health using food, not psychiatric medication.     Dana has come up with a theory that we eat and gain and lose weight according to our archetype: the Femme Fatale, the Superwoman, the Ethereal, or the Nurturer.  You can take a test on her website www.danajames.com to figure out which one you are.  Her book gives plenty of recipes and tells you what to eat based on your results.

What if we didn’t need harsh diets or crazy exercise regimes to change the shape of our body? What if instead, all we need is to reclaim our self-worth? That’s the message of today’s podcast guest, Dana James — triple certified nutritionist, functional medicine practitioner and cognitive behavioral therapist… and BOY will her insights blow your mind. Head to https://melissaambrosini.com/125 for full episode resources and more inspiring weekly episodes. Dana’s approach to women’s weight loss is revolutionary: instead of restrictive eating plans and hardcore gym programs, she helps her clients achieve their ideal body shape by putting self-worth at the centre of the conversation. It’s this uncommon approach — combining psychology with nutrition (or "food with feelings”!) — that has seen her transform the bodies (and lives) of more than three thousand women, and that’s made her a sought after health expert for media outlets like The New York Times, ELLE, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, MindBodyGreen, Good Morning America and The Today Show. The thing I love most about Dana’s work is her emphasis on becoming attuned to your individual body archetype. By decoding your unique body chemistry, Dana says women can reprogram their hormonal patterns and take control of their health and vitality — allowing them to release stored fat, get leaner and stronger, and feel more like themselves than ever before… So if you want to discover how to combat emotional eating, how to stop sabotaging your health goals, and how to become the happiest, healthiest, most magnetic version of yourself… then this inspiring conversation is for you. In this episode we chat about: Her story — from working in finance... to chakras, functional medicine, nutrition and cognitive therapy (06:22) What is an archetype? (07:46) The 4 female archetypes (and how knowing yours can change your life) (07:59) How and why she created The Archetype Diet (11:16) How to discover your own archetype (14:10) How the 4 archetypes compare to the Ayurvedic doshas (15:33) The best foods for each archetype (18:24) How to know if you have adrenal fatigue (31:48) The surprising thing she attributes her success to (43:03) Why your breath could be the missing piece of your health puzzle (49:30) Why breath and lifestyle are so important in order to thrive (49:50) What is ‘rolfing’ and why you want to give it a try (58:29) Plus so much more! Nutritionist, functional mediation practitioner, cognitive behavioral therapist, mindbodygreen class instructor and collective member, and dear friend Dana James has helped more than 3,000 women clean up their eating habits and move closer to their happy weight over the course of her career. Dana's emphasis on psychology is unique: She believes that in order to lose weight, we need to first address the mental blocks that are holding us back. In her 12 years as a practitioner, she's identified the four personality archetypes that most people fall into. Her brand new book, The Archetype Diet: Reclaim Your Self-Worth and Change the Shape of Your Body, dives into how to find your archetype, identify the mental and hormonal blocks keeping you from your healthiest life, and conduct mind-body exercises that will leave you feeling vibrant. It's a must-read for anyone struggling with their weight or just looking to clean up their relationship to food a bit. In this jam-packed podcast, Dana introduces the four archetypes and provides some loose food guidelines for each. From there, the Columbia-trained nutritionist breaks down all of the healthy eating trends of today, weeding out fact from fiction. Tune in to hear her take on why sugar is not addictive, how to really tell if you have a gluten sensitivity, why nuts aren't as great as people make them out to me, why you should never intermittent fast if you're stressed, and so, so much more.
