In episode 240 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Amelia Wrighton. Amelia is the co-founder of mental health charity, Suicide & Co, a charity which supports those bereaved by suicide. Amelia started Suicide & Co with her friend Emma Morrisoe, who she met whilst working in her media and marketing career and she discovered they had both lost parents to suicide. Amelia lost her mother when she was just 19 years old and it hugely impacted her mental health and even caused her to have grief and stress-induced alopecia. Amelia's mother had lived and struggled with Bipolar Disorder (BD) for the time Amelia was alive. In this episode we discuss: the journey of Suicide & Co and how she saw a gap in the mental health conversation five years ago around suicide loss, the counselling service and other services the charity provide to people. We also discuss the importance of language around suicide in the mainstream conversation, as well as how we support others who have been affected by it. For Amelia's mental health, we discuss the grief of losing her mum and what it was like to live with someone with Bipolar and the differences between how it affects men and women. We finish by discussing burnout, medication and how she manages her self-care when her full-time job is dealing with suicide and intense mental health conversations on a daily basis. Welcome to episode 181 with Amelia Wrighton, who is the co-founder and CEO of Suicide & Co, a charity that is on a mission to support bereaved individuals and open the conversation around suicide-related grief. Amelia set up Suicide & Co. with Emma Morrisroe after they met at work and realised that they shared the same experience of losing someone to suicide. The charity provides one-on-one professional support through talking therapies and a Helpline that is staffed by bereavement counsellors as well as providing all sorts of resources and initiatives to spark conversations and encourage conversations around bereavement from suicide. In this episode I chat to Amelia about her own tragic loss, the impact it had and how that led to eventually setting up this incredible charity. We chat about some of the complexities around this very specific type of grief, about using the right words, the importance of knowing how to have conversations about suicide related grief. In this episode of the Beautiful Business Podcast, host Yiuwin Tsang once again welcomes Amelia Wrighton, the passionate founder of Suicide&Co. Amelia discusses the often-overlooked issue of dealing with grief in the workplace. She emphasises the lack of clear guidelines and policies for handling bereavement and suicide-related grief within organisations. The conversation examines the need for systemic changes in the workplace. Amelia reveals how Suicide&Co recognised the gap in supporting bereaved individuals in the corporate world and developed a specialised offering to guide organisations in navigating loss within the workplace. The key takeaway is the importance of recognising and acknowledging grief as a common experience, with a focus on suicide-related grief that requires attention. She highlights the need for flexible and individualised approaches when it comes to bereavement, which doesn't fit the one-size-fits-all mold. The discussion further explores the role of managers, HR teams, and leaders in creating an open culture where employees feel comfortable discussing their struggles.Amelia provides actionable advice for both individuals and organisations. She encourages open communication, urges colleagues and managers to ask "Are you okay?" and shares the value of contextually framed questions. She also stresses the importance of ongoing support, beyond the initial shock, and highlights the significance of gestures like sending flowers, messages of support, and facilitating an environment of open communication. The podcast concludes with Amelia sharing her hope for the future. She envisions workplaces that proactively address grief, with managers trained to spot signs and have open conversations. She hopes to see flexible bereavement policies that accommodate individual needs and comprehensive support memberships for organisations, bridging gaps in knowledge about suicide-related grief. Ultimately, Amelia's vision is for workplaces to be well-equipped to support their employees through one of life's most challenging experiences.About Amelia WrightonAmelia lost her mother at 19, whilst in her first year of university. This is a local case which happened just a few miles from where Becca lived at the time so it's one she remembers well. The prevalence of mental health issues in it struck a cord for her and Elle. Trigger warning for discussions of mental illness symptoms and behaviour. This week Becca discusses the case of Peter Wrighton. In August 2017 the pensioner, Peter, was walking his beloved dogs when his life was ended in a vicious attack. The man responsible, Alexander Palmer, had a history of extreme mental health disorders and had gone unhelped by medical services despite his issues being reported multiple times. Amidst a crumbling system of care in England, this is a case which seems to have more than just one victim. On the morning of Saturday August 5th 2017, dog walkers out for a stroll near the village of East Harling came across what they thought was an injured man in the wooded walkway known as the Heath. When they went to assist him to his feet, they noticed he had a large open wound on his neck and there was blood across the other side of the path. They called 999 and police quickly arrived and cordoned off the scene. The injuries were so severe that they initially thought the man had been attacked by his own dogs, but, a much deadlier predator was on the loose. All sources available on crimelapsepodcast.com Thank you to our sponsors for this episodePodcorn.com the best way to monetise your podcastBeekeepers naturals - check out our favourite products on beekeepersnaturals.com/crimelapseSmile Brilliant, get whiter teeth the right way. Multidisciplinary creative Gareth Wrighton joins O.T.T today. The designer, stylist, and video game creator has become one of fashion's most exciting and thought-provoking voices in the industry right now. Wrighton graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2016 and made waves with his final major project entitled "The Maul" a post-apocalyptic video game which took it’s players into a post apocalyptic parallel universe where zombies were weaning Wrighton’s collection. He made his Fashion East debut during the Fall-Winter 2019 season where he captivated the audience with his stunning knits, and satirical MAGA inspired hats with the slogan "My Period's Late Again". Today we are talking about his career, the pop culture moments that formed his taste, and our mutual love of Britney Spears.
Mark Scott sits down with author, podcaster, and television and radio broadcaster Tony Wrighton on his passion for taking life to the next level through alternative sources of energy. At one point in his life, Tony contracted an unidentified tropical virus. Doctors were at a loss as to what it was or how he could be treated. This drove Tony to seek out unconventional solutions, in this case, tapping. Ten minutes into his first session with an emotional freedom therapist specializing in chronic fatigue, Tony knew that he was going to be okay. Following this experience, Tony learned about biohacking through Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof Radio podcast, and from there he was thrust into an exciting quest for unorthodox strategies and solutions for long-term health and wellness. Listen in as Mark and Tony discuss such topics as low-histamine diets, NLP, and Tony’s very own podcast on “energy, vitality, motivation”, Zestology.
Young people spent less time fretting about their savings during lockdown.Research by the Commission for Financial Capability has found fewer people between 18 and 34 were keeping a close eye on their finances from March to June. Those who considered the money was there to be spent shot up from 29 percent to 42 percent.Retirement Commissioner Jane Wrightson told Kate Hawkesby it's a bit of a worry."Young people are feeling the brunt of job losses. They are bearing the brunt of income interruption, they worried about the future, and the sort of 'live for today' attitude that is coming through at the moment from that uncertainity."For other parts of the community though, the pandemic may have forced us to take a harder look at our savings. The same research shows an upswing in people’s knowledge and attitudes around their personal finances. People are also becoming more informed about their KiwiSaver funds and have been able to save more.Wrightson says thinking ahead is really important."We do now that things go up and down in our lives. We know that we have good spots and bad spots, and we do know that the best way to deal with that is to have some money salted away, to have a little bit of discipline around your savings if you can."
Kelly Wrighton and her group at Colorado State University in Fort Collins have a massive undertaking: sequencing the world’s river microbiomes. And they’re using team science to do it. Find more info on this episode, including the transcript here.

Here's my summary of the third day of ASM2013, wherein I met with neat people and ideas. Download Episode (4.3 MB, 4.6 minutes) Session 1: Microbe-Microbe Interactions - Cell Contact-Dependent Outer Membrane Exchange in Myxobacteria Presented by Dan Wall Myxobacteria are super cool, a fascinating example of complex cooperative behavior in relatively simple single-celled organisms. They swarm around eating other bacteria until they get low on food, at which point they gather together to form reproductive structures called fruiting bodies to spread to new environments. As part of the mechanism they use to coordinate their activity and distinguish between friends and foes, they seem to exchange components of their outer membrane, but only with closely-related strains.
