Over ten years ago I read the Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris and it blew my little mind. At the time I was trying to grow my freelancing business through sweat and hustle. I worked long hours and was - for the most part - an absentee parent. I remember answering client emails only a few hours after having a c-section with my first born and my second child was placed in daycare when she was only two months old because I was working nonstop. The idea that one could make money and support themselves with only four hours a week was radical to say the least. It seemed unbelievable, but extremely appealing to someone who had ground themselves down - and so I set my compass firmly towards it.I determined myself to build a business that would give me this level of time freedom. It would take me eight years to get there. And in 2022, I finally cracked the “code”.I finally had the freedom of my days.I finally was able to be fully present with my kids. For the first six months, working less than four hours per week was amazing.I spent my days reading, gardening, meditating, exercising and visiting friends. But after about six months of this, things started to go downhill.I started to feel bored - a feeling I hadn't felt for almost twenty years. And slowly fell into apathy. I have since come to realise that total time freedom is not the promise land we make it out to be. In fact, retirement, as a whole, is a scam. For we are meant to create, or rather MADE to create. To be immersed, hands in.I'm not talking about overwhelm or busyness for the sake of busyness, neither of these solve for anything. But neither does detachment from work. Taking almost two years “off” working minimal hours has messed with my flow in ways I can't even begin to explain. It's made me lethargic, and dimmed my hunger. While this may come across as patronising, in the same way as someone with wealth saying “mOnEY woN'T make yOu haPPy “, take it from me: total freedom of your days is not the solution to your burnout. Work is good. It's healthy. It keeps the belly full and the mind sharp. And while I don't know Tim Ferris personally, just based on his content and work output, I can almost guarantee you he is working more than four hours per week. Not because he financially has to.But because he understands that true fulfilment comes not from escaping work, but from engaging in meaningful work. To those of you whom have I led astray the past two years directing you towards this total time freedom business model, I apologise, I was wrong. Fill your time with those things that give you purpose and meaning, understanding that hobbies and coffee dates with friends will only take you so far. Creating value is what you are here to do, shirking away from this will only send you adrift. And so, to that, I set a new compass, twenty hour workweeks - a happy medium.Expect to see a lot more from me going forward

On today's podcast, I have the brilliant bestselling author of If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?. This book is a really juicy one and brings up a lot of food for thought that I think will resonate with a lot of you listeners. So I'm looking forward to speaking with Raj Raghunathan today. Raj earned his PhD from the Stern School of Business at New York University and is currently employed as a professor of marketing at the McCombs School of Business, the University of Texas at Austin. Raj's work juxtaposes theories from psychology, behavioural science, decision theory and marketing to document and explain intimate relationships.Raj wrote his book as a result of discovering that many of the smartest, brightest, most successful people were profoundly unhappy. Raj set out to find an answer to this problem, and extensively researched happiness not just of students and business people, but also stay-at-home-parents, lawyers, and artists, among others. So often life gets busy and takes over and distracts us from something that should come so automatic, but doesn't always... Happiness :) In this episode I will pose 3 questions to help you think about what makes you happy and how to try and implement a little bit of selfish "me time" into your day. maybe even from the floor of your bathroom ;) Remember it's important to breath, to have some stillness and be grateful. Then, let's get you creating and finding something that lights you up!! I know other things take your energy, and a lot of them are good, worthwhile things. But don't forget your own individual happiness along the way :) Come check back with me on Instagram and tell me what makes YOU HAPPY!!! :)

Have you checked your mental health lately? Leslie brought some GREAT questions you should be asking yourself if you aren't feeling things lately. Maybe you don't feel enough joy as you feel you should. If that is the case, take a few minutes to ask yourself these questions and dive in with us as we discuss this today. It's the end of June, which means we are halfway thru 2022. Mentally, are you okay? How are you talking to yourself? Who are you around and following on social media? What and how is your confidence level? Because how your portray yourself, is how other perceive you. What are your standards/boundaries and how are you setting them? Did you set any goals for 2022, what have you achieved from your list? How did you set your goals for the year? Here are a few tips on setting goals and NO its not too late to set some goals, boundaries and standards for 2022, at least for the rest of it. Tips for setting goals: 1. Choose a goal(s) that are worthwhile and make YOU HAPPY. 2. Make them achievable- Be realistic. 3. Be Specific. So Specific. If you are the praying the type, Pray about them and PRAY SPECIFIC! 4. Commit to them. 5. Tell people about them. Accountability is a beautiful thing. 6. Prioritize the goals. Don't be afraid to put them in order by what's more important or more achievable first. 7. Make the REAL to you—again, be realistic. 8. Set deadlines to push you to reach them. 9. Take time to step back and evaluate your goals. Are they working for YOU? 10. Last, but most important (we think) Reward yourself when you reach a goal! Did you reach the first one? CELEBRATE you and the fact that you did it! That will help you be more encouraged to keep going. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. BAMBA represents the 5 determinants of happiness in the workplace and includes: Basic NeedsAutonomyMasteryBelongingAbundance CultureAre You Controlling of Others Scale 1- Strongly disagree 2- Disagree 3- Probably disagree 4- Neutral 5-Probably agree 6- Agree 7 – Strongly Agree1. I have high expectations for the people that are important to me.2. I have very high standards for those around me.3. If I ask someone to do something I expect it to be done flawlessly.4. A lot of the smart and successful people in the business world are very good at achieving extrinsic goals of success, fame, money and power. But those types of people are not necessarily very good at the intrinsic goals of happiness, building great relationships, having a sense of ease about life and pursuing meaning.Raj Raghunathan is a Zale Centennial Professor of Business at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He is interested in exploring the impact that people's judgments and decisions have on their happiness and fulfillment, and writes about his views on happiness, creativity, and leadership on his popular Psychology Today blog Sapient Nature. His six-week long Coursera course on happiness called A Life of Happiness and Fulfillment currently has over 350,000 registered students from 196 countries. He has also written a book called “If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?”In this episode, hear Greg and Raj talk about the substitution of intermediate metrics for final metrics, the abundance mindset, and whether or not givers are more likely to succeed.Episode Quotes:Can you be happy if you don't reach your goals / find a sense of belonging? I do think that you can. And I think a lot of it involves gaining this, what I call the Abundance Mindset at the end of the book. And basically it is to focus on the part of the glass that's half full basically. So everyone's life has problems. Everyone's life has also good things going on. And which of these two things do we predominantly focus on? Are we constantly focusing on the problems and trying to tackle them and address them? Or are we also taking some time to be thankful for all the things that are going positively in our lives? And the argument here is that the more you are focusing on the things that are going well in your life, or at least taking some time every day to appreciate the good things in your life, the less desperate you're going to be for many things.Happiness can help you achieve your goalsThere is a relationship between being happy and those conventional yardsticks of fame, money, power, et cetera in that happier people are more likely to achieve those goals anyway. And so it's a win-win strategy to prioritize happiness because not only do you get to increase the goal that everyone is ultimately after, but it also ends up enhancing your chances of achieving those goals that you thought would lead to happiness. What makes people happy? That level of authentic seeking of the truth to what really is the determinant of happiness, as opposed to the fake determinants of happiness I think is a very important starting point. And in a way I think that in this grand dance, we have come to a situation in which a lot of the things that we assumed would make us happier - namely, more comfort, more ability to travel and living in richer homes and et cetera - I think a higher number of people than was ever the case in the past are discovering it as a personally experienced truth that more of those things don't make me happier. And so we have more of the authentic seekers I feel now than used to be the case.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at The University of Texas at AustinRaj Raghunathan on LinkedinRaj Raghunathan on TwitterRaj Raghunathan on TEDxDelhiRaj Raghunathan on CourseraHappy Smarts WebsiteHappy Smarts on YoutubeHis Work:Raj Raghunathan on Google ScholarBlogs on Psychology TodayIf You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?

Tolly Burkan began teaching in 1973. At that time, he presented "The Science of Happiness" invented by Ken Keyes. Tolly and Ken taught together and co-authored the bestselling book How to Make Your Life Work or Why Aren't You Happy? published by Simon & Schuster in 1976. Tolly is most renowned, however, as the founder of the international firewalking movement. Tolly's approach to firewalking resulted in a global phenomenon of over six million people attending firewalking classes. Due to his pioneering strategies, firewalking seminars are now regularly offered on six continents. Tolly built his reputation by consistently creating innovative, cutting-edge methods for developing human potential. In 1977 he created the world's first firewalking class and began teaching firewalking to the general public. In the 1980s, he started working with large corporations and began training instructors. The '90s transformed his work into a mushrooming corporate trend. Even mainstream companies such as Microsoft, American Express and Met-Life began including firewalking in their executive empowerment seminars. Tolly has taught firewalking to many celebrities, including Andrew Weil, M.D., Regis Philbin, and Anthony Robbins. Tolly also demonstrated mind over matter on national television by influencing slot machines in Nevada casinos during one of his peak performance trainings covered by Inside Edition. In addition to being the first person to offer firewalking in public seminars, Tolly was the first to offer public seminars teaching ordinary people to walk barefooted, unharmed, on shards of broken glass; the first to teach public classes that included metal bar bending; barehanded brick breaking; arrow snapping; and many other esoteric practices of heightened awareness and empowerment, usually reserved for a select few. Tolly retired in 2017, although he is still available for interviews. He has authored nine books that are available in 16 languages, and has been featured in over 70 books, hundreds of magazines and newspapers, and on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. Since 1984, Tolly regularly appeared on all major television networks and was a guest on Donahue, Regis, Geraldo and MythBusters.******************************************************************To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com

This will be my last podcast episode of 2020. I just wanted to end it by saying: POUR INTO YOURSELF ALL 2021. A lot of us often stretch ourselves thin for other people we forget to take care of ourselves. But in 2021 I am here to tell you to put yourself FIRST without feeling guilty. Travel alone and see the world, pamper yourself, prioritize your mental health, do what makes YOU HAPPY and enjoy every last minute of it. You cannot pour into others, if your cup is empty. Use 2021 to love who you are and everything about yourself unapologetically. You are your greatest asset and don't you ever forget that.

Episode 157 What if Nothing is Wrong with You? Happy 2020 my people! I know the new year is all about resolutions and what we can do to improve just a bit, and there’s plenty of time for that, but what do you think of the idea that we are pretty darn impressive just the way we are. What if nothing was wrong with you? I know….what if there really was nothing wrong with you and you just accepted that. How would that settle into your heart? Stay tuned for today’s episode on self love, self acceptance, and the novel idea that we are acceptable here and now, just as we are. In fact we are more than acceptable – we are beloved and filled with magic. Since loving ourselves creates the foundation for loving our story – this topic is ideal for the Love Your Story podcast, so I wanted to pose the question to you – What if there is nothing wrong with you? I first heard this statement from Susan Henkel’s TED Talk, part of the “How to Be a Better Human” series, so let’s start there… Susan Henkels has worked as a psychotherapist for more than 45 years. That means she’s spent decades smiling and nodding, decades handing over tissues at the appropriate moment — and decades hearing people tell her all the things about themselves that need to be fixed. One day, as she was listening to a patient take her through the “whole list of what was wrong with her,” says Henkels, “I thought in the middle of this litany, ‘What? There’s actually nothing wrong with her.’” From that moment, she realized there is a surprising power to be found in prompting people to ask themselves, “What if there’s nothing wrong with me?” She says, This does not mean we’re perfect. For instance, most of us could stand to eat better and sit up straighter. But we can stop spending so much time dwelling on our personal shortcomings and imagining how our lives will be better once we finally — finally! — vanquish them. “We create this whole list of what we think is wrong and then create an entire life around it,” In fact, the attributes we think of as problems can be our strengths. Henkels tells this story in her TedX talk. “What if there’s nothing wrong with you?” is about building the skill of acceptance. Henkels says this question is about pressing pause on your inner critic and making “a choice to let go of all the ways you’ve made yourself wrong,” as she puts it. Tune into the audio program to hear a clip of this Ted talk. As you look at your own level of self love, let’s start with these questions. 1. What if there’s nothing wrong with you? And as you start to categorize that favorite list of short comings – ask yourself – What’s wrong with that? Really…could your perceived weakness really be a strength? Let me share a story. I shared this in an earlier podcast, but it applies here so I’ll share it again. Last year I was at a women’s empowerment conference. One of the activities we were doing involved consideration of how who we are and our natural tendencies helps us to fulfill our callings – the things we are here to do. In other words, I am equipped to do what I am here to do. As I personally considered a topic I have often been criticized for and thus I have interpreted it as a weakness – that of being strong willed, determined, and sometimes pushy, it struck me that perhaps I am okay just as I am – perhaps that strength was given to me to accomplish what I need to accomplish. Perhaps I have a warrior goddess energy rather than a healing goddess energy or a sweet, compliant goddess energy because I will have battles I need to fight through, and there is definitely a place for the guardians and warrior goddesses, as much as there is a place for the goddesses of mercy, kindness and a more docile energy. This was the first time this has ever crossed my mind because it went against a cultural representation created about gender roles in my culture. But I loved it because it made...

Raj Raghunathan In this episode, I bring you a very popular interview I had with Raj Raghunathan. We discuss the correlation between happiness and success. If intelligence helps with decision-making, smart people should naturally make better life choices. So why are so many of the smartest, brightest, most successful people profoundly unhappy? This leads him to research and writing If Your So Smart, Why Aren’t You Happy? - our topic of conversation in this interview. It will give you a powerful new perspective on your work, personal goals and relationships, whether you’re already successful or just starting out. Guest Bio Raj Raghunathan, Ph.D., is Professor at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, where he relies on themes from psychology, behavioural sciences, decision theory and marketing to explain consumer behaviour. He serves on the editorial board of Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Consumer Psychology. He is also one of the fourteen faculty members of Whole Foods founder John Mackey's Academy of Conscious Leadership.

Welcome to the ninth episode of Minisode Monday! We keep finding so many useful tactics and tips that we want to share with you, but they don't fit into the format of a regular show -- hence, Minisode Monday. If You're so Smart, Why Aren't You Happy? author and recent guest Raj Raghunathan joins us to talk about when we should go with our gut instinct to make a decision and when we should turn it over to our mind. The Cheat Sheet: Many smart and successful people think you can arrive at a better solution to any challenge or problem faced by thinking a little more about it. This leads to what Raj calls the sin of "mind addiction." When we succumb to this mind addiction, we tend to overanalyze and get into analysis paralysis -- unable to remove ourselves from a self-feeding loop that actually stops us from making a decision at all (or, in the best case, an inferior decision). Our instinct -- our gut -- packs a lot more information than we give it credit for. Evolution has given us this intrinsic command center we often ignore in favor of waiting for further, external information that may or may not exist. This isn't to say all decisions should unquestioningly be handled by the gut. Stock market investing, for instance, is a job for the brain. But making a spreadsheet to weigh the pros and cons of dating one person over another is being overanalytical of a job best handled by the gut. What is the eventual benefit you seek? Is it an emotional/experiential one, or is it a functional/practical/utilitarian one? If it's the former, go with your gut. If it's the latter, it may be worth letting your mind give it more careful thought. Do you need to justify your choice to other people? It's probably a job for your mind. If it's something for which you are only accountable to yourself, the gut may be your better option. Welcome to the seventh episode of Minisode Monday! If You're so Smart, Why Aren't You Happy? author and recent guest Raj Raghunathan joins us to talk about the benefits of kindness and giving. Here's what's up today: The Cheat Sheet: Kindness and giving are good for us. Pessimists can point to numerous reasons that humans seem to be programmed for selfishness and greed, but research suggests we're equally (if not more so) hard-wired for generosity. A study with non-socialized toddlers found a correlation between sharing a personal resource (Goldfish crackers) and happiness -- the most generous toddlers were also the most happy. When we're kind to other people, other people tend to reciprocate that kindness. Even if our generosity is unconditional, the receiving party usually feels obligated in some way to return the favor out of an inherent sense of fairness. We all want to feel as if we're good at doing something -- even if that something is simply being an agent of positive change. When we see our actions as making a difference in the world, we feel more than competent -- we feel powerful. On the other side of it, being too nice -- overly kind and giving -- can get us marked as suckers; where do we draw the line? Raj references recent guest Adam Grant for some lessons in being an "otherish" giver. This week, we challenge you to find the balance between being a selfless giver and an otherish giver. Take the Art of Charm Challenge for weekly help in striking the right balance in this and the other areas of your life. Let us know about how you put today's Minisode Monday into practice! Raj Raghunathan (@Rajadon), author of If You're so Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?, examines why happiness often eludes us in all walks of life -- no matter how healthy, wealthy, or wise we seem to others. The Cheat Sheet: The very things that make people smart and successful can, paradoxically, get in the way of happiness. The typical education, no matter how extensive (or expensive), doesn't give us instructions for how to be happy. Are millennials naturally better equipped for happiness than elder generations? Being mindful intensifies positive feelings even as it mitigates negative ones. What's the recipe for your happiness? And so much more... Most people claim “happiness” is one of their top priorities in life, but how many of us really take time to define what that means? Is it free time? Is it friends and family? Is it financial success? Humans have evolved with a brain hard-wired to avoid danger and threats to our personal safety above all else, but that is not the ideal mental model for a fulfilled life most would define as happy. For many people, their ideal of happiness goes against much of their hard-wired tendencies, so to achieve it, it requires serious thought, hard work, and deliberate lifestyle design. On this week's Yoga Talk Show, author, Raj Raghunathan, shares his research, teaching, and writing around happiness based on his career. Raj is an award-winning Professor of Marketing at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas in Austin. Raj's work has appeared in leading marketing journals, and has been cited in several mass media outlets, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Austin American Statesman, The Houston Chronicle, and Self Magazine. He is the author of a new book titled, “If You Are So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?” ----------------------------- Listen & Learn: Why "what you're missing out on" might be causing unhappiness Why it's important to define happiness Why happiness is to be lighthearted but not at the cost of being cruel and a state of harmony (right now is good) Why you must prioritize happiness, go on a news fast, and a nature feast Why you should develop a spiritual attitude (that life is aligned, not benign or maligned) How default negativity can cause people to note dangers, and it's easy to get lost in this Yoga Practice Tip of the Week: Grip Strength - how to deal with wrist pain? By I've always been a bit skeptical about books on the subject of happiness. My concern is that they would be filled with shallow platitudes, assuming that the ultimate goal for ourselves is self-focused pleasure.
