Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

I don't wanna grow up, Slackers! This week is dedicated to the some of the best jingles from the 70s & 80s. I don't know about you, but I consider jingle writing to be an art form. Some of these are instantly recognizable and many actually occupy a place in my jaded little heart. From the Toys R Us theme to the the classic "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke", many of these jingles have stood the test of time. Sure, they were written to help sell some consumer goods, but when the songs are this catchy, I can't help but have a certain sentimental reaction. I mean, doesn't your balogna have a first & last name!? And who doesn't love short shorts? Some of the commercials featured actors that would go on to have classic roles on stage and screen - everyone starts somewhere - but the Jaleel White sighting threw me for a loop!Anyway, check it out. I really enjoyed this one!

Pete's ongoing resentment towards Brendan “Integrity” Rodgers comes up (again!), Aaron does the decent thing and slags off Ian Holloway (always a popular move on THIS podcast!), Justin takes the piss out of Pete's dated knowledge of Alton Towers! Jarvis (always one to court controversy) combines with VAR to cause an altercation in the Prediction league, John goes all battleships on us, Justin decides to go off on “the Mother of all tangents” involving the origin of “Argyle”, Justin promoting local businesses at away games, the National Marine Aquarium, other odd tourist attractions, Rusks, Wrigleys and Justin's love of lighthouses and fireworks championships before reluctantly actually giving a prediction and Carl calls us from work that has very unfairly kept him from being involved – which we think is very unreasonable of them!COYH!!This Podcast has been created and uploaded by Do Not Scratch Your Eyes. Though it seemed like photographing them was his destiny, Green actually aspired to be a documentary photographer. Becoming the Cubs photographer, he recalls, was serendipitous. Green was doing a graduate thesis on Wrigley Field, then owned by the Wrigley family at the Art Institute of Chicago, but unable to afford the tuition, he still decided to work on the project independently. For the next year, he covered publicity events and the seventh inning stretches. When the Wrigleys sold the ballpark to the Tribune Company at the end of the 1981 season and with their photographer retiring, Green was offered the position of official photographer. In his 35 years, he's photographed alongside Associated Press and Sports Illustrated photographers including Walter Iooss, John Biever, Neil Leifer and Brad Mangin. One of things he's picked up over time is shooting things that moves. With that in mind when on assignment for magazines, Green explains the different approaches in shooting a baseball game outside of the basics. “If you're shooting for a trading card, you just need very clean peak action,” he says. “If you're working for a magazine, it's usually a story specifically driven about a player and you want, like in Sports Illustrated or those magazines, a picture that's got a lot of emotion in it and a lot of intense action.” Of all the Cubs teams he's photographed over three decades, Green states the 2016 Cubs were his favorite to shoot because the group had grown up together and had developed a history, unlike previous years where players acquired through trades and free agency didn't stick around for long. “This team's really kind of cool,” he says. “I really love photographing [infielder] Javier Baez. He's so athletic. He's so excitable and fun to shoot. They're all so different. Kris Bryant is very classic. His form is really good. He's really easy to take a good picture of. Same with [Anthony] Rizzo. His swing is so perfect. But Anthony Rizzo is very emotional. He's very responsive.” We talk about his love of photography, jazz and blues, Oprah and rain delays. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

At the top of their game the Wrigley's family was one of the wealthiest families in the world.  From Wrigley Field in Chicago to Wrigley Mansion in California.  Learn how they broke into the big time when they actually had nothing to sell.  David Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Peak PTT Ad] David Young: Stephen, my notes say we're going to talk about Wrigley. Stephen Semple: Yeah. And the interesting thing, we're going to talk about Wrigley's, not as a multi-billion dollar empire, but what Wrigley's did back when they were a little Midwestern, $170,000 a year business. They were founded in 1891 by William Wrigley Jr., and in 2016, they basically merged with Mars. Stephen Semple: And at that time, Wrigley's had six billion in revenues and about 1,600 employees. But when we go back, they were a little Midwestern, gum company that wanted to go national. And in fact, one of the things that they did early in their history is they did this little $100,000 advertising campaign. They were in Chicago and they wanted to move into the big market of New York. And they did this $100,000 advertising campaign that totally failed. David Young: This is when? Stephen Semple: This would have been back in the late 1800s, early 1900s. David Young: A $100,000 is a lot of money. Stephen Semple: It was a lot of money, but the campaign failed. And part of the reason why they felt it failed was, is they didn't feel like they could get enough attention with that campaign. But here's where things get really interesting. In 1907, there was kind of this little mini market crash and panic happened. And everyone stopped advertising and the ad rates dropped. Does this kind of sound familiar at all? David Young: Mm-mm (negative). Stephen Semple: We see this happened in the pandemic. We see this happen in recessions. We see this happen over and over again. But what Wrigley decided to do, this is how bold this guy is, he went out and he borrowed a pile of money. So he borrowed $250,000 to run an advertising campaign. Stephen Semple: So right when panic is hitting the streets, no one's advertising, he said, "I'm going to spend $250,000 on this campaign". And he feels that the value that they got was what would be comparable to a million and a half dollars worth of advertising. David Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Over 250 grand, they got a million and a half dollars worth of advertising. Here's what happened. It worked gangbusters. They went from $170,000 a year business to a $3 million business in three years. So from 1907 to 1910, they went from 170 grand to three million in sales. That's like 1600% growth, 16 times growth in three years. David Young: All he had to do was beat the percentage rate he was paying on the loan. Stephen Semple: There you go. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. From that day on, they stayed a national advertiser. And Wrigley was often quoted as saying, "The key in advertising is, 'Tell them quick, tell them often'". So he was big believer in repetition. David Young: Tell them quick and tell them often. It sounds a lot like the kinds of things that we tell clients. Stephen Semple: Yeah. David Young: Today. Stephen Semple: Yes. Tell them quick, tell them often. But here's the interesting thing. They didn't just do this trick once. So by 1932, Wrigley's was doing $12 million a year in profit. 1932. David Young: In profit? That's not close. Stephen Semple: In profit.
