Nivedita Joshi's journey in Yoga is an example of how the scientific Iyengar's method, coupled with earnest and sincere practice, could bring about remarkable results. In her teens, Nivedita was stricken by slipped disc and cervical spondylosis. No doctor in India could cure her or diagnose her correctly. She lost the ability to move her hands and legs, and by the time she was 26, after 12 years of struggling with the condition, she was completely bedridden. In 1996, Nivedita met BKS Iyengar in Pune and joined his medical classes as a patient. Her transformative experience of healing nurtured her commitment to Guruji's teachings and motivated her to help others experience the health-giving benefits of Iyengar Yoga. In 2004, Nivedita opened the first Iyengar Yoga center in Delhi, Iyengar Yogakshema, where she teaches general and medical classes. In this interview, Nivedita reflects on her remarkable experience of recovery and healing through the Iyengar method. She shares her take on what makes Guruji's approach to mind-body work so effective for health. She also recounts some episodes from her 22 years of close association with Guruji and offers some guidance to the younger generation of students and teachers. ___ More information about Nivedita Joshi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOghTM9NkeQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb89zTipXOE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9MezxWaGdw Iyengar Yoga center in Delhi - Iyengar Yogakshema https://www.iyengaryogakshema.org/ ___ Glossary: सूक्ष्मशरीर - sukshma sharira - subtle body, the vehicle of consciousness with which one passes from life to life. स तु दीर्घकाल नैरन्तर्य सत्कारा असेवितो दृढभूमि: - 1.14 Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - Long, uninterrupted, alert practice is the firm foundation for restraining the fluctuations.

George Dovas Iyengar Yoga Teacher George Dovas encountered Iyengar Yoga in Sydney, Australia in 1999 when he was working as a fitness instructor. At that time, George was keen to understand what it means to be "healthy" and “fit”. The teachings of BKS Iyengar revealed aspects of human health that George hadn't encountered in any other modality or by any other “fitness expert”. Not only was BKS Iyengar's vision of human health profound, it was also his brilliance as a teacher that was noteworthy, and the skill with which he could convey the theoretical understanding of total “health” interwoven with the practices to achieve that. In 2001 George relocated to Hong Kong at a time when fitness and Yoga were rapidly growing in South East Asia. Now, George is the Director of The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hong Kong. He teaches students of all levels and is a mentor for upcoming teachers. George is an assessor of teachers seeking Iyengar Yoga certification in South East Asia and China. As well as teaching Yoga, he has given talks on Yoga, its benefits and how this ancient science is being verified by modern science. Annually he studies at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India with the Iyengar family. Formerly, as well as working in the fitness industry, he worked as a business consultant for a top tier professional-services firm.

She is the elder sister of Birjoo, Rajvi, and Arti Mehta, who are also highly regarded Iyengar Yoga teachers. In this episode, Neeta speaks about the importance of going beyond the words and instructions in Yoga. She reminds us that words have limited meaning, and that language cannot express everything. This week on the podcast, I have a very special conversation with Anne Cushman, a pioneer in the field of mindful yoga. Anne is a senior retreat teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, where she founded the first multi-year Buddhist meditation training for yoga teachers. Anne Cushman has dedicated her life to the embodied Dharma path, equally exploring the wisdom traditions of yoga and Buddhism, since she started her practice in the 1980s. Her teachings and writings skillfully express the intersections of philosophy, meditation, movement, creativity, and real-world practice. We talk about why it has been important for her to center mindfulness in her yoga practice, and how yoga asana and pranayama allowed her to truly absorb the Dharma teachings beyond a conceptual understanding. You'll hear how she defines mindful yoga, and how cultivating mindful awareness enables us to meet all of the contents of our experience - on the mat and off. She also shares some fascinating history, as someone who had a front row seat to the development of yoga and Buddhist Dharma culture in the West. You'll hear about Anne's time working as an editor and writer at Yoga Journal (in its early days), including her experience interviewing BKS Iyengar. She also shares what it was like being one of the first teachers to offer yoga practices on Buddhist meditation retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. We touch on issues like balancing tradition and innovation, moving between spiritual communities, drawing from multiple lineages, and the potential of cultural appropriation. Anne emphasizes that yoga and meditation have always gone together and that asana was always intended to be in service of the transformation of heart and mind. Episode 13. David Meloni is a devoted practitioner and highly regarded teacher of Iyengar Yoga from Italy. David began his Yoga journey in 1996, initially learning from BKS Iyengar's book, "Light on Yoga." When the light of Yoga sparked within him, David committed to this path, seeking not just any guidance but direct guidance from BKS Iyengar himself. Since 2003, he has been visiting Pune, staying there continuously for months and studying under Guruji's direct guidance. "Guruji's verdict was, 'Your practice is empty,'" David recounts. "You must unlearn everything, return to the foundations, and grasp the connection between correct actions." Through David's unwavering efforts, perseverance, and devotion, he not only learned from his Guru but also delved deeper into the subject of Yoga. This experience also made him realise the importance of moving Yoga practice beyond its physical aspects. In the first part of the interview David talks about his experience of learning Yoga from the book, his learnings and the challenges that new students should be alert to. We also discuss the difference between Iyengar Yoga and Guruji's teachings; why it is critical for a practitioner of Yoga to understand the importance of experiential knowledge and not simply rely on dry information from notes or books; what the true purpose of props is and how they could support your progress on the path of Yoga. Today we explore the epic yoga battle between the Iyengar school and the Ashtanga school, as we sit down with author, yoga practitioner, three-time Fullbright fellow to India, researcher, editor, and Professor of English and Creative Writing at Penn State University, Elizabeth Kadetsky! Elizabeth's took up the study of yoga when she was a teenager (back in 1984, but who's counting?) and she continues to practice yoga today. After twelve years studying in Iyengar studios, she finally met BKS Iyengar at a talk he was giving in New York City in 1996. You may have hear of her very popular book, First There Is a Mountain (published in 2004). This book was intended to be the original “Eat, Pray, Love.” As early yoga students, it was the first of it's kind. This book chronicles a year where Elizabeth worked directly with the great Yoga Master, BKS Iyengar, while she was researching his role in the history of Indian Independence and the complicated dance between East and West. Later her practice evolved to include many forms of Hatha Yoga and also Ashtanga yoga, which is how she first met Russell, while practising with Guy Donahaye, in New York city. Today, we're learning about her research around the authenticity of the origin stories we were told about the yoga practice and how yoga's being weaponized by the Right-Wing politics of India. We look at how the idea of anything as a “Pure Tradition” can become a toxic premise upon which racism festers. The world has always been a global place and we should celebrate the continuation of cultural exchange. Building bridges instead of walls. We're also diving into her current and ongoing research about a set of stolen goddess sculptures from India, and the great debate around whether these recently found stolen works of art should be returned back to their place of origin or not. What is the difference between a temple, a church, or a museum? Should great works of art belong to a more universal collective or to a particular group or person? Does the repatriation of art, actually right a colonial wrong? And what happens to these works of art once they are returned back to their native land? What kind of transparency and accountability is required of a government who takes back their stolen works of art to the rest of the global community? If you're ready to examine the intersection of politics, art, and yoga and what's our responsibility is as conscious leaders and yoga practitioners… This is the conversation for you! Firooza was in her early twenties when she started her Yoga journey with her first Yoga teacher Father Joe Pereira. Father Joe later became a medium between Guruji and Firooza, and introduced her to BKS Iyengar. Firooza is also a Master of Arts in Philosophy and she has taught philosophy to undergraduate students. How should a student of Yoga think of progress in Yoga practice? When should a Yoga student look for a new teacher? How can a student of Yoga find the balance between knowing the philosophical aspect of Yoga and doing the practice of yoga? These questions and more will be addressed in this episode with Firooza. Firooza currently teaches at Iyengar Yogashraya in Mumbai and conducts workshops in India and globally.
'Yoga is the journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self,' says Bhagavat Gita. Studying and discovering the Self is the essential part of Yoga practice. Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, who was the greatest teacher of Yoga in modern times, was continuously studying and examining his physical, physiological, and mental body during his Yoga practice. He gained all his knowledge about Yoga through his direct experience, and encouraged his students to explore the asanas (Yoga postures) firsthand to gain a deeper understanding of their effects on the body and mind. BKS Iyengar made Yoga accessible to people worldwide and helped many, regardless of their physical condition, to benefit from it. His distinct style of practice was called 'Iyengar Yoga' by his students to emphasize that Iyengar was a teacher they follow and study from. In this podcast we explore the vast subject of Iyengar Yoga with Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers, who are direct disciples of BKS Iyengar. Here they reflect on their Yoga journeys, share their lifelong lessons, and recount moments of joy and growth when studying under the guidance of their Guru. In this podcast trailer you'd also learn what is niyama and why this podcast is called 'The Fourth Niyama'.

After that she was hooked! As she delved deeper into the Ashtanga practice she became curious about her teacher's teacher and his lineage. She learned that Tirumalai Krishnamacharya had been Pattabhi Jois' teacher and also the teacher of BKS Iyengar. Withdrawal of the Senses.Returning to Yoga-8, the limbs of practice, E61 is all about Pratyahara (the fifth limb) withdrawal of the senses. Even after decades of study, practice, and teaching, there are aspects of Yoga that are a constant curiosity, Pratyahara is one of them.Sherry & Theresa decided to go on a field trip before tackling this notion of sense withdrawal and went floating. That's right, floating. Floating is akin to what we used to refer to as a, “sensory deprivation tank.” That was the expectation, total sensory deprivation. While the hosts did not withdraw from all their senses, they talk a bit about how the focus of floating in darkness that is the same with eyes open as closed, had an influence on their sensory experience that opened doors to understanding Pratyahara in a new way.Floating offered a new language with which to offer clarity (or at least an alternate road to clarity). This episode touches on what Pratyahara is, how it can be practiced in the modern world, and benefits of practice. Pratyahara is the 5th of 8 limbs and is the first of the more contemplative practices. Talking about Pratyahara brought up other subtle body anatomy maps (chakras, koshas, and more) which curiously overlay each other in symbiotic ways.Pratyahara asks us to notice what we notice. This conversation covers some of the basics, but if you wish to understand Pratyahara (or any of these limbs) in a more scholarly way, absolutely find a teacher with whom you can do the deeper dives. Do you have back pain and wonder if there is a solution? Listen to this inspirational and informative discussion that I had with Lillah Schwartz titled Mind, Body & Yoga Back Care. During this discussion we covered topics like:1. Learning anatomical alignment and how to sense when you have it is the foundation of a practice that is safe for your joints. 2. The most important thing missing from yoga teaching is teaching students how to find and sustain stability.3. In practice - Stability comes first, extension of the limbs to create length and space is second, building range of motion4. Mind/ body connection5. Why lying flat is helpful for relieving and understanding back pain. using the pelvic clock face as an alignment tool.6. Tendai takes us on a powerful journey of using breath control to align and ground thyself. She highlights on the concept of creating from within and being a magnet and mirror of what is inside us. Moreover, she explains the role of feminism and the power within womanhood. She also sheds light on how sexual energy can be transformed to creativity. IYENGAR YOGA -- EP. 09 -- Different people have had different experiences of what Iyengar Yoga is, and who BKS Iyengar was. For Patricia Walden, when she met Guruji, she knew automatically that he was her teacher and that studying Iyengar Yoga was her path. Over 40 years later, Patricia is now the most senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher in America and still dedicated to her powerful practice. Tune into this conversation to learn how Patricia used Iyengar Yoga to heal her depression, how she teaches others to do the same, and also how she uses her platform as a teacher not just to teach the asana and pranayama component of this practice, but how she also infuses the rich spiritual philosophical writings of BKS Iyengar into every class she teaches.
IYENGAR YOGA -- EP. 08 -- In dance school, "Virtuoso" is the word we use when a dancer does something with a high level of excellence, virtuosity, and grace. The first time I saw David Meloni's practice, the only word I could describe it as was "virtuoso". As the holder of the highest level of Iyengar Yoga Certification in the world, one would expect nothing less. In this interview, David shares his story about how he as a teenager fell deeply in love with the practice of Iyengar Yoga, how he searched to find teachers in Italy to guide him on his path, and ultimately how that path led him to the feet of BKS Iyengar himself. We talk about cultivating the spirit of constant exploration within our Iyengar Yoga practice, we explore Iyengar Yoga as it is taught in the world today and what Guruji's teachings actually were, and how we as the global Iyengar Yoga community can move closer to bridging the gap between those two experiences. IYENGAR YOGA -- EP. 07 -- The systematic approach with which Iyengar Yoga has been built creates confidence, security, and the clear light of intelligence within practitioners. However, in Iyengar Yoga being disseminated around the world, it has gone through changes and interpretations that don't always reflect the reality of these teachings as they are taught in Pune. This week, we are going to the Iyengar Yoga Motherland in Pune, India and speaking with Gulnaaz Dashti who had the opportunity to study with BKS Iyengar for her entire life and is one of the teachers at RIMYI. In this interview, Gulnaaz shares her story, what Iyengar Yoga means to her, and how much of her role as an Iyengar Yoga Teacher is in cleaning up the misconceptions that people have about what Iyengar Yoga practice actually is.
This episode is a mind-expanding stonker of a conversation with yoga teacher John Stirk. If you've ever meditated (or tried to) if you work with mind-body healing or have been to a yoga class, this is going to be fascinating. If you've not come across him, John has been very influential in the yoga world. He started teaching yoga in 1974, and graduated as an osteopath in 1988, later becoming a fellow of the College of Osteopaths. He ran BodyMind workshops with R.D. Lang. and as well as being influenced by BKS Iyengar and Krishnamurti, also had personal tuition from Vanda Scaravelli. Ceasing osteopathy practice in 2000, John now focusses exclusively on group work. He's recently published his fourth book ‘Deeper Still' showing how we can find our inner teacher and all make this journey from sensation into expanded consciousness.I'm your average, sometime-meditator, constantly distracted and no matter how much I long for peace, it is extremely elusive. Except in John's classes, where almost nothing happens, with only tiny movements, but by the end, I find myself in an extraordinary, expanded state. I wanted to ask John why this was, how even a crazy-head-maginty like me, can reach a state of quiet bliss through sensing into the body.We cover: What consciousness isThe Self and egoThe role of the skin in unifying the egoHow to calm our mindsHow space can be our friend and connect and unifies usMind. Viloma translates as 'Against the Grain', and this yogic breathing technique involves dividing our breath into parts. The influential yoga teacher BKS Iyengar likened this technique to climbing the rungs of a ladder, and dividing our breathing up in this way can help us find a little more awareness, a little more space, and even a little more softness within our breathing. Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar. These are all names that many in the yoga community are familiar with and are considered by many to be the pioneers of modern yoga. But thanks to the work of modern yoga scholars like Elliott Goldberg, we are learning about numerous other figures who influenced the modern practice of yoga. Who were these characters and how did they affect how yoga evolved in modern times? Join us with Elliott Goldberg, yoga scholar and author of The Path of Modern Yoga: The History of an Embodied Yoga Practice, as we discuss a figure named Yogendra Ji who paved the way for the modern yoga teacher and set the stage for how hatha yoga would be taught in the west. His sessions lasted about an hour and culminated in savasana, not meditation. Many of his views, such as his feelings on guru yoga and the practical benefits of Hatha Yoga, echo in many modern yoga teachers today. Welcome! Something unusual for the Yoga Podcast, this time James Altucher (my husband) is interviewing me (the Yoga Teacher) And he is not holding back, he asks about personal things (very personal), about yoga, about what brought me to it, what it did to me, what it can do for you and how it influences every moment of my life There was talk ranging the whole gamut from Patanjali to Professor Krishnamacharya and his teacher, to BKS Iyengar to Pattabhi Jois (founder of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga System) to BKS Iyengar to Paul Dallaghan, Jessica, Kino... everybody! And he asked me about the Periscope LIVE yoga class I offer for 30" EVERY FRIDAY - Why Periscope? Why should you go into it? How would you benefit from it? Will you like it? Is it for you? And we even talked about relationships, specifically our relationships, and the challenges that we face when working, teaching, dealing with children or step-children and god-children, to cooking and travel, to who packs the clothes and who wins at chess, every time! WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT ME I don't want to sound arrogant, I prefer to keep it on the humble side, and even that sounds arrogant, I feel I can win. So, ok, what is special about me is I keep it real, I have spent tens of thousands of dollars circling the globe in search of true teachings, good teachers of asana, pranayama, and on lots of meditation retreats. I also write books and one of them became a WSJ best-seller... Mostly I am into the flow of life, into living each moment and appreciating the subtleties and nuances of how life is always different, with every breath we take. Yoga is fundamentally a BREATHING practice. And that is the most important part of the message for me. Hope you like it! Enjoy
You know that episode where you introduce your guest and you do it all wrong? And then he has to stop you -very politely- to make corrections? Well, this is one of those episodes... But the good thing is Matthew Sweeney is a really cool guy, he was not disappointed and he wanted to correct things because he has two partners on the beautiful yoga place they share in Ubud, in paradise Bali, and so he told me. And I left it on the podcast because I think it is good that you hear the spontaneity of how it all went. I met Matthew through a photograph. And it is not as woo-woo as it sounds... We were in Mysore, it was 2008, and one night, during one of those frequent electric cuts, my friend Martina and I started looking at his book "Ashtanga Yoga As It Is". We looked specifically at the advanced postures, like, pick any of the photos in the sample page below... like really, ANY... Then we would look at each other, Martina and I, over the flickering candle light and go: "Noooooo... That is impossible!" What I love about Matthew is that he works very hard at the practice, at teaching it and at keeping it real. He has "beef" with the usual teacher trainings when they are impersonal and the teacher does not get to know the students (think those courses that teach more than a hundred at the time). He also does not believe that one system can be good for "everyone", because he has seen the results... People leave the practice when it is too rigid, when it won't adjust to the issues and the lifestyles and DNA of each individual person. And that is sad. He is also adamant about getting to know personally the people who will go in the world and teach what he teaches. His teacher trainings have many levels, but they are not there to annoy anyone, but rather to build a solid relationship, to do it right. And, because his practice is so extensive and has happened over such a long period of time, he has created his own sequences, which you can download (see about Matthew section at the bottom of the email) WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT The restaurant he is opening in Bali, at the yoga retreat, and what they will serve (hint: I love dosas) His experience with Pattabhi Jois (who received him before he even got out of the taxi cab) Matthew's teaching space in Bali The differences between the approaches of Iyengar and Jois What happens we you practice yoga and you want to be "honest" about it Matthew's personal definition of yoga today... which has to do with what is happening to you now How the issues of food and sex need to be resolved for a proper asana and yoga practice in full to work The different levels of kindness How he has become "uncool" (in certain areas) in front of his 16 year-old daughter How we was inspired to create the posters that eventually became books by Darma Mitra Matthew's big beef with most yoga teacher trainings How the "moon sequence" that he developed, helps bring some balance (satvic energy) to the extreme (rajasic) practices some of us do How he teaches pranayama and when What is the one thing that took him a long time to understand ABOUT MATHEW Website TheYogaTemple.com Workshops and Retreats 2015 and 2016 Newsletter sign-up for updates from Matthew DVDs books and posters (available for instant download as well) Facebook TRANSCRIPT Claudia Altucher: Hello and welcome to the Yoga Podcast. I am thrilled today to have Matthew Sweeney with me. Matthew is the director of the Yoga Shala Bali in Ubud. He is a yoga teacher, a Star Wars fan, and a twice black belt in martial arts. Matthew has explored and practiced four, or even five I think, of the Ashtanga Yoga series of Sri Jois, who is the founder of Ashtanga Yoga, as well as the teachings of Krishnamacharya, Desikachar, BKS Iyengar, among many other teachers and trains of thoughts. He started teaching yoga in 1996; at first Ashtanga Yoga, but as he went on he received thousands of students with unique challenges and he developed his own sequences. He is the author of two books, Ashtanga Yoga As It Is, and Vinyasa Krama, in which he explores the sequences – Matthew Sweeney: I'm sorry. We might need to interrupt that because I think a couple of things are incorrect there. I might need to revisit. Claudia Altucher: Oh, please, please correct. Tell me. Matthew Sweeney: Okay, just the start because I'm not the director of the Shala Bali here. There are three shareholders, so if the other shareholders heard that they would probably be a bit upset with me. So maybe we restart that one. And the other one is – I remember this, I've just got to think about it – the year that I started. I started teaching in 1992. Claudia Altucher: In 1992. Would you mind if we leave this like this because I think it's spontaneous and it's good and then your partners hear how loyal you are, which is a great thing. I'm sorry about this, that I didn't have it right. Matthew Sweeney: No, no. It's not a problem, it's just I don't want to get in trouble. Claudia Altucher: Of course. I understand. And it's good to know you started in 1992, then. I had that – I didn't get that right so I'm glad you told me. But I do know, and this perhaps you also have some DVD's that can be downloaded with two sequences, Vinyasa Unlocked and the Moon Sequence. Is that right? Matthew Sweeney: Yes, that's correct. Claudia Altucher: Yes, and many posters of sequences that are quite impressive. Matthew Sweeney: Yes. Claudia Altucher: So I didn't quite get the bio right, but Matthew is here to help which is a great thing. So Matthew, welcome to the show. Thank you for coming in. Matthew Sweeney: No, thanks for having me. Claudia Altucher: So it's 6:00 p.m. there in Bali? Matthew Sweeney: Yes, that's right. Claudia Altucher: What did you do today? Matthew Sweeney: Oh, today we rode around looking for furniture and bits of – tables and chairs for a little Indian Dosa restaurant that we're starting to create. Claudia Altucher: Nice. Is that together with – Matthew Sweeney: A little Indian restaurant called Dosa Corner. Claudia Altucher: Very nice. I love Dosa's. Matthew Sweeney: Yes, I know. So do I. I love South Indian food, so yeah we thought we'd – there's not good South Indian so much here in Bali so we thought we'd make a good little sort of, yeah, chi shop and Tiffin. Claudia Altucher: Oh, how nice. So this is in – this retreat where you're teaching, which you share with other partners, and it looks amazing in the photographs. It looks really nice overlooking rice fields and – Matthew Sweeney: Yeah. Claudia Altucher: That looks really, really nice. Matthew Sweeney: Yeah, it's lovely. Claudia Altucher: And let me ask you, so what's the weather like there? Matthew Sweeney: Ah, well hot and – hot and humid pretty much all year around, though at the moment it's nice because it's raining almost every afternoon so it cools off. Claudia Altucher: That's good. When was the last time you saw the snow? Matthew Sweeney: [Laughs] That's an odd question. Oh, a long time ago. I think the last time I really saw snow was probably in Germany in 1993 or '94. Claudia Altucher: Yeah, because in all your pictures you look like there's always sunshine around you and you inspire me because I thought if I follow Matthew's teaching I'll probably never see snow again, which – Matthew Sweeney: I mean I have to say, I've actually been talking to my partner, Lauren, about this. She really wants to have a white Christmas somewhere so we'll probably go and do the snow in one or two – well, not this Christmas but maybe the Christmas after that. Claudia Altucher: Oh, okay. Well, you know – Matthew Sweeney: It's not that I'm against the snow, it's just that I love _____ - Claudia Altucher: Warm weather. Matthew Sweeney: And warm weather. Claudia Altucher: Yeah, me too. Matthew Sweeney: I like the snow. I like the snow for one week of the year, but that's all. Claudia Altucher: We're exactly the same. We have a nor'easter coming in here in New York, so it's going to start snowing any time, so it's a lot of fun. And I have some good news for you. You're a big Star Wars fan and I understand this weekend the first trailer or the new movie is coming out. Matthew Sweeney: Oh, yeah. I heard some rumors of this, so yeah, I'm very curious. I loved the first three movies and the following three, they were okay. They just scratched the Star Wars funny bone. So yeah, we'll see what the next are load are like. Claudia Altucher: That's how you started into yoga, right, martial arts and Star Wars? What was it about martial arts that got you thinking along these lines? Matthew Sweeney: Oh well, I love – I guess I love Bruce Lee and all of that kind of stuff. I grew up wanting to be, I don't know – Claudia Altucher: A Jedi master. READ THE FULL TRANSCRIPT HERE
